The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Are we going to lose the next war?

It seems as though the Biden junta is barreling along a road that leads to significant degradation of our ability to conduct military operations. Even if our soldiers and sailors weren't preoccupied with gender and how best to wear sexy red pumps, they are rapidly running out of the munitions required to conduct a war! And they aren't even getting the experience of firing that stuff...it is being sent to Ukraine and to a lesser extent Israel.

Unfortunately it isn't just a question of ramping up production, which is, in and of itself, a very big question mark. We have also degraded our ability to produce the raw materials that are vital in the production of modern munitions.

Global Conflicts Expose Dire U.S. Munitions Shortage

The United States military is severely short on high-end and artillery munitions at a crucial and strategic moment. As the calendar turns to 2024, Ukraine, using bombs and bullets from the United States, continues its slog of a war with Russia with no foreseeable end. Simultaneously, the U.S. continues sending artillery rounds to Israel amidst the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) assault on Hamas in Gaza. In the Indo-Pacific, American tensions with China remain high as Taiwan prepares for a general election with fears of Chinese interference and Chinese leader Xi Jinping promises the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China. In DC, alarm bells ring regarding the dearth of rounds required for these three distinct kinds of conflict. Central to this issue is an American paucity of rare earth minerals indispensable in producing these bombs, shells, and rockets. To address this shortage and ensure the long-term viability of ammo for high-end conflict, the U.S. must invest in and maintain innovative systems for processing and refinement of rare earth minerals.

Who do we blame? The environmental movement. The idiocy of the globalists. The vast conspiracy within government to cede production of everything to China. The stupidity of the NIMBY movement in America (driven by environmentalism). The list goes on and on, but the problem is immediate, while the fix is generational.

This issue has vast national security implications, and a Trump presidency should address it immediately. A simple waiver to the appropriate mining and processing companies to operate outside of the EPA's maniacal restrictions and whatever other restrictions placed by the various federal and state authorities would be an appropriate beginning. Its justification is obvious, necessary, time sensitive, and vital for our national security.

And it will never happen, because we have ceded all power to an insane cabal of the progressive left, operating under cover of whatever political interest group can exert the most leverage to diminish the United States of America in whatever way they can.

So when China blockades Taiwan, we won't have the missiles to fight the Chinese Navy and the Chinese air force. We won't have the artillery shells to send to Taiwan to repel an invasion. We won't have the small-arms ammunition for their infantry. And that's just one place! We used to have the capacity to fight two theater wars. Now? We can't supply a small army fighting a border dispute while supplying an ally fighting an even smaller action.

Sure...there are reasons that go beyond politics. Modern weaponry is complex and requires more time to manufacture. But we know that! The logistics chains should have been in place long before we began to run out.

This cannot be anything other than a carefully planned outcome. How many thousands of military and civilian personnel are tasked with the logistics if supplying the United States armed forces with the material necessary to conduct and win wars?

Anyone saying that this was "unexpected" deserves a punch in the nose.

Maybe "they" planned this. I don't think "they" are that good. It's the old hubris and incompetence gig. They think they are the adults in the room and hey how could anyone have any conflict with them? Only illegitimate people would have any conflict!

31 Actually, isn't this normal time of the year when DOD starts putting out dire warnings in order to support their requests for funds coming down the pike.

I do know we are replenishing munitions, and I know many of them have a shelf life which if not used they must be destroyed. A lot of that older stuff went to Ukraine. I am sure there are some questions about supply now, because I am sure we need more than our typical annual buys, but all the big munition/defense players are hyping up their orders and watching their coffers fill with money.

WHY should businesses stay here? (My bad. because Patriotism.). Having business in this country is NOT a birthright. We really need to do a lot of soul searching as a country to finally accept that as long as the government and the people who elect them keep making it easier and cheaper to make everything in China (et al), this is what you are going to get.

41 I would add that we should better align defense spending on various weapons and defense programs to modern reality.

Why are we spending hundreds of billions -- if not trillions -- on new or upgraded manned fighters, bombers, and other similar shit? Isn't the future of warfare gonna be drones, ICMBs, and smart missiles? The money we are spending seems barely to be making incremental upgrades over existing tech, anyway.

Oh, before you answer, I of course know why we are spending all this money. But it's about time we base our military spending on actual military objectives, rather than on Lockheed's profits.

Oh, it surely can be.

Did a cabal sit around and say, "how do we go about a generation-long weakening of American power and ensuring that they're flat-footed for the next conflict?" I doubt that very much. That cabal doesn't exist and if it did, it would be trying to move it the *other* direction for its own purposes.

This is much simpler and much more frightening: they didn't mean to. The people in charge at all levels are retarded malefactors. They will make the worst possible decision in any given situation. When examining a problem, consider what the worst thing to do would be - worst for America, worst for you personally, worst for anything you care about - and you will accurately predict the actual decisions more often than not.

There was a time when I *did* think there was some master plan. I really don't think so anymore. The people in high places are just fellow travelers pursuing their own ambitions along similar lines. It's probably one of the reasons that our policies seem so chaotic and conflicting: they are.

There's no grand plan, but there is a general agreement among all the people who matter that "we the people" are not first-class humans, but somewhere between slaves and cows to be milked while they go pursue their games.

But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted -- and you create a nation of law-breakers -- and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."

Graft is largely an individual or small group enterprise. You claim your own little fiefdom and squeeze.

Like most institutions, the military complex is downstream from society. Basically the US society has little to no desire to be the world's policeman but as long as defense spending is paid for by borrowing and the force is volunteer then has no objections to these strategically stupid little wars from time to time.

So you get a relatively small force armed with hi tech weapons instead of a large conscript army and reserve system using far simpler tools and weapons (Russia is an example of this sort). Ask AH Lloyd about China's military as I haven't kept up.

Suburban women vote dem. It's not just big cities. If everywhere but big cities voted GOP (which isn't that great either), the GOP would always win majorities and the WH. So, you can't just blame big cities.

I don't think elections are an accurate reflection of the attitudes of the American people anymore,

Don't underestimate stupid. the vast majority of voters are incredibly ignorant and stupid. Think of what the median IQ is, then realize that 1/2 the people are under that.

Our Navy probably couldn't protect the trade sea lanes if we wanted to anymore, but we could put a naval group somewhere and wipe out pretty much whatever we desire, with specialized committed special force troops in tow. We certainly are no longer in the hold ground or positions mode right now. I don't know if that is smart or not.

I am sure we are evaluating drones, and getting a close up look to what is happening with them in the Ukrainian theater.

It's called "Working Toward the Fuhrer." You don't need specific orders or even top-line organization - just the idea to which all subscribe. Get that, and they do it all on their own. We don't have a fuhrer at the moment, but we *do* have legions of powerful people with the same indoctrination and vision of what's "right" and the same ambition for graft and power.

And as initiatives formulated at different levels, and by different agencies of the regime attempted to accommodate the ideological drive, the “idea” of National Socialism, located in the person of the Fuhrer, thus gradually became translated from utopian “vision” into realizable policy objectives

And?

I remember 2016. It wasn't that long ago. I remember the kerfuffle over the GOP rules that whoever wins the nomination, the candidates get out there and back the nominee. Those are the rules for access to GOP resources and polling, and that was not new in 2016. There was an uproar because Trump indicated that he might not but he eventually agreed, as did every other major candidate - just like in every election.

Of all those men who agreed to abide by the rule and go out and stump for whoever won, I can only remember *one* who actually did it: Ted Cruz. He went out and wore out shoe leather and burned down telephone switchboards campaigning for Trump. All the rest didn't. Some merely didn't engage, others stabbed him in the back. As far as I know, only Cruz kept his word.

I was not a Cruz fan (I'm still not), but he went up several notches in my book because of that. The man did what he said he'd do, even though I'm sure he didn't like it.

The use of cheap drones has completely changed the useful scenarios. The Ukrainians have been using cheap $400 drones with mortar shells or grenades attached to do what those $8000 switchblade drones are doing.

1. How successful vs the switchblade?
2. They have to wait until someone opens the turret. I'm sure tank crews have learnt that lesson - hey they probably watch youtube too (which never shows Ukes getting the worst of it).

A tank's armour protects infantry from machine guns, etc. How do you replace that?

Every weapon has its heyday and I suspect we have seen that in manned tanks because missiles to take them out are quicker to manufacture and cheaper to make than tanks.

What you might see is drone armored vehicles (aka like Laumer's Bolos) in the near future. Basically if you take out the need for a human and their comfort/support, you save a lot of space and weight as well as training.

Depends on what you mean 'beat'. Ditto for China. Taking on either of them in a land war is senseless stupidity. Air power or naval? Dunno and neither do most people including 'experts'. Russia demonstrated that it cannot immediately beat a country much smaller in size reminds us of the limitations of conscript armies with insufficient logistics. Those insufficient logistics dictate trouble the further you get from Russia. Ditto for China.

Both are mostly a real threat for adjacent countries absent a total war using nukes and other such unpleasantness as CBW, partisan type sabotage, and cyber warfare, and that threat recedes as the distance from those countries increases.

I don't really agree with this analysis. Korea was a very dynamic war, with an audacious amphibious assault, and operations all up and down the peninsula. The bigger lesson, I think, was reestablishing something from Lincoln's time (and FDR, to an extent): political leaders get to set primary goals and boundaries for the war, and generals will he removed for violating them.

In Vietnam, the political leader got too involved, hamstrung the military too much, and had unclear or unattainable goals. THAT failure has persisted to today. The military goes in, destroys the enemy, and then is supposed to assist the locals and Department of State in establishing something new and enduring....and it always fails.

And lets not get too out there, I know we are all very disappointed with the leadership of our country and military at the moment, but lets not get too goofy.

The Russians forgot/didn't think to bring along food and fuel when they made their strike for Kiev. They cannot really mobilize troops in mass without rail support. They have their own issues with re-supply and equipment that actually works. We would utterly destroy them - if we had the political will to do so. No one thought the Russians had fallen this far from their Soviet days.

They can barely sail their fleet out without having it come under attack by drones. Essentially in Ukraine we have a stalemate, even though Russia has huge manpower advantages.

We would have immediate air superiority eliminating the only effective offensive weapon they have - focused artillery. Now, could we question our ability to have leadership not fuck thing sup - sure.

You don't fight a land war with Russia. Instead, you interdict their supplies if they were to do something as stupid as invade a NATO country and we do have the capability to do that. The vaunted Russian air defenses appear to be not all that and likewise their vaunted hypersonic missile tech and now both have been fully exposed. If Russia was so stupid as to invade Poland for example, it would be rough as hell for the Poles but far worse for the Russians. Now, invading Russia itself would be a stupid thing as it would negate your air power advantage in the first place.

Regarding China, the only direct threat on land would be to adjacent countries and of those, only South Korea would be reasonably at risk but over a very narrow front.

That's one of the biggest weaknesses of Russian tank design. The ammo is stored in the crew compartment, so if it goes off, everyone dies. In Western tanks, the ammo is stored in a compartment in back of the turret, with special blowout panels, so that the explosion goes up and back. It's a much more survivable layout.

Last week or so there was some article that slipped out about how the Russians were blowing the crap out of Ukraines tanks using cheapo drones.

I'm guessing that's where most of the "Ukraine is winning using this one simple trick" drone stories came from. I'm sure there have been some GHOST OF KEEEEV drone attacks against the evil Ruskies, but I'm betting most of the stories are psy-ops to attempt to counter actual Russian victories in discussions and articles.

To be fair, Republicans, including Trump, are big spenders as well.

The one "fiscal hawk" in any proximity to power was Paul Ryan, and his plan was a joke that he never even brought up to a vote.

There is no political constituency for reigning in the government debt.

271 A Professor Gave a Woke Course and Nobody Came
The DEI revolution’s under-enrollment problem.

The English department, for example, recently sent out a campus note that listed “a number of courses with space available.” All of the courses were, by their titles alone (“Latinx Theater,” “Sex, Sexuality, and Rape Culture in the 18th Century,” “Affrilachia: Regional Literature, Race, and Power”, identifiable as classes focusing on the obsession with identity politics that is presented by DEI offices as the new raison d’être of higher education.

That email got me exploring enrollment data (which are listed on our course-registration site) for the English department’s other courses. I discovered a number of other DEI-centered classes that had very few students in them. These included “Fiction and Reproductive Justice,” “Shakespeare’s Sisters,” and “Radicals and Renegades.”

As for Biden, Presidents receive more praise and angst over the economy than they deserve or from what their actions really do; but Biden's additional Covid stimulus on top of his decrees to restrict oil production and force renewables down everyone's throat was about as dumb as anything, and makes him a candidate for the president most appropriately blamed for the country's economic woes.

Interest: $659 billion
Military: $773 billion
Social Security (2022) : $1,244 billion
Medical spending (Medicare/caid, CHIP, Obamacare subsidies) : $1,508 billion

The billion-ton fiscal gorilla is federal medical spending. The interest payment is a disaster, but it's still - for now, and for a brief period - manageable because it hasn't taken off yet. Medical spending is destroying the federal fiscal environment. SS is expensive as hell but isn't very far underwater as compared to its tax revenues. Medicare/caid isn't even close.

322 So when China blockades Taiwan, we won't have the missiles to fight the Chinese Navy and the Chinese air force.

It's worse than that. Japan announced last week that they will be sending Patriot missiles to the US. Now we're begging for weapons from our allies. The MSM is praising the decision (which is a first because the Japanese Constitution forbids exporting entire weapons systems) because it frees the US to send more Patriot missiles to Ukraine.

Given the usual special prosecutor is already an existing federal officer (usually a DA or some such) via Senate confirmation, I am not sure that the AG actually has the constitutional power to appoint a major officer of the US absent Senate confirmation and a formal presidential appointment Issue wasn't raised in Watergate cases but subsequent Scotus precedents in immigration, budgeting, and criminal sentencing have undermined that statutory power. The Special Counsel law, if I remember correctly dates from Harding Tea Pot Dome scandal era and is hardly firmly rooted in constitutional law.

Historically, "the times make the man." The cream rises to the top and the turnover in command is extremely rapid during the early stages of a conflict.

If that happens again - that is, if the military and civilian government are interested in winning and so allows the cream to rise - then the next great commander is somewhere in the ranks and will shoot to the top in fairly short order. But your guess is as good as mine as to who he will be.

A Balancing Act website has current budgetary information and you can actually cut or raise taxes in across the federal budget to play around with figures.

Essentially, Social Security could be fixed by raising the retirement age to 70 and early retirement to 65 in the same month by month increase over time and that would stabilize the fund for about three generations or so. Medicare requires immediately tripling or quadrupling the tax rate among other things to even attempt to stabilize it.

Other medical spending such as Obamacare, CHIPS, etc. come out of the general budget.

I have always thought though that all such social welfare spending has to be a common highly visible tax like a sales tax so that if everyone benefits, then everyone pays and increases in benefits only come accompanied by tax increases. Makes buying votes harder to accomplish.

388 $5 bounty on a left ear. When I was a kid in Ohio there was a bounty on crows and later red winged blackbirds. Bring in the right wing to collect your two bits. A kid with a .22, a box of Super X, a pair of scissors and a dream could afford chili dogs and root beer.

390 366 Pennsylvania Demofascists have filed a petition with the SecState to remove a GOP Congressman from the fall ballot, on the grounds he questions the 2020 election result and sounds insurrectiony.

Posted by: Huck Follywood

Will fail and lawfare at it stupidest. US Term Limits v Thornton is directly on point as precedent which relies on the older Powell v. McCormick case where expulsion is the constitutional remedy--not the monkeying around with not seating congress critters. That precedent started during the Civil War btw. The 14th Amendment also reserves the power to punish insurrection to Congress via legislation, not the courts and certainly not the states.

The GWOT is 20 years of proof that the military could not possibly do that today.

Not now but after the fiscal crisis that we are about to experience, I think airy fairy pixie dust accounting will be out the window even if the regime does not collapse requiring a new Constitution. The disorder of the 1780's economically gave way to Washington and Hamilton's sober economics. Sweden went through a similar situation in the 90's, Austria in the 20's, and so forth. And the British had an awful century of economic growth paying for WWI and WWII. When the endless borrowing due to the reserve currency status ends, then you will see something like Britain or France post WWII with currency controls etc.

Depends on when the century leap years fall in comparison to the current year. Leap years are divisible by four - except century ('00) years, when the year is *not* a leap year unless it is *also* divisible by 400 (e.g., only 1/4 century years are also leap years - 1900 was not a leap year, 2000 was). That changes things meaningfully the further you get from the century year. It's every 28 years for a while. It will hold on that cycle on 2080, but then you get to wait until 2120 before the 2080 calendar (or the 1996 calendar) will work again, because 2100 will *not* be a leap year.
