18 I take it this supposed to be at night? Clearly some time between the Crucifixion and Peter's own death in Rome as a martyr during Nero's reign. Peter was supposed to be a hearty fisherman, presumably young to middle-aged, when he began to follow Jesus. But here he is white-headed and -bearded. So I'd guess this is set some years after the Resurrection.

25 Saint Andrew preached the Faith in Asia Minor (Turkey) and in Scythia, east of Turkey (north of Iran). He also preached in Greece and Macedonia. He was crucified in Achaia at Patras in the year 61. Tied to an X-shaped cross after being scourged, he made the cross his pulpit and preached to the people for two days before he died. Peter was martyred under the Nero persecution in the year 67. Peter, too, was, as His Master, crucified by nails on Vatican hill. His wish to be crucified upside down, out of reverence for Jesus, and out of his profound humility, was granted. Saint Paul, the Apostle, was beheaded outside the walls of Rome on the same day as Peter.

Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 04, 2024 09:38 AM (2yu8s)

26 And why would Jesus be carrying that cross. It didn't go with him. Did he come back and build a new one so Peter would recognize him? Shouldn't an apostle know his Lord and Savior just by his face? This painting is confusing.

On first re-encounter the Apostles didn't recognize Jesus until he revealed who he was.

That sounds right, Kris, though I had not heard that story. The tradition is that Peter was crucified (head downward, I think?) during Nero's persecutions.

I don't believe Nero had anything personal against the new sect, the Christians. He needed a scapegoat for the terrible fire that swept Rome during his reign. (No, he didn't "fiddle" while Rome burned. The fiddle hadn't been invented yet. But the story goes that he did play the lyre and sing a tragic song, possibly his own composition, while the fire was going.) (He also provided shelter for citizens whose homes had burned -- so he wasn't all bad.)

73 Peter probably carried a hefty amount of what we term survivors guilt. That he should have done more, but additionally, that he should not have denied Christ three times. His faith was found wanting and that probably haunted him.

So Christ appearing probably would have scared the crap out of him and also, steeled his resolve to not do the same again. If his faith demanded his death, then so be it.

79 Interesting painting both for subject matter and technique. Carracci's style is realistic compared to the more wooden figures I see from this period and the colors are natural, not overly bright. That emphasizes the figures in the scene even though the objects and landscape are also realistic. It works for me.

I like the way Christ is portrayed: resurrected and restored to glory even though bearing the marks of being crucified. Saint Peter, with the keys to the kingdom, startled by Christ's appearance and realizing what he must do.

Possibly because he was afraid she'd kill him if he didn't toe her line. Remember, she'd murdered her husband and uncle Claudius (the I, Claudius guy) and probably Claudius's son Britannicus so Nero, her own child, could get the throne. Agrippina the Younger was no sweet, well-upholstered Italian matron urging you to have another helping of spaghetti and meatballs, "Eat, eat, you're as thin as a rail!"; oh, no.

He tried several times to kill her -- arranged for her bedroom ceiling to collapse, and then sent her out for a cruise on a ship designed to fall apart. She survived both. I think he finally had her stabbed or strangled.

Nero was a narcissist and a headstrong, spoiled brat, but I doubt he was a savage sociopath in the sense we know today.

99 Nero had the misfortune to be the last emperor of a particular dynasty (Juilio-Claudians). So some of the poor-mouthing has to be taken with a grain of salt. The Flavians and their court followers had good reason to blacken his name. And the same sort of thing is probably in play when Domitian rounds out their dynasty.

During the Republic, sure. Fabius the Delayer, who devised the strategy for keeping Hannibal from destroying the entire Roman army. Horatius at the bridge (though he might be only a legend). Cincinnatus, who left his plow, took up the mantle of dictator, whipped the immediate threat, and went back to his farm.

During the Empire, virtuous Romans were thin on the ground. Maybe Germanicus, Caligula's father. Marcus Aurelius, possibly (though he was deluded into thinking his son Commodus would make a good emperor).

Where do we draw the line under the "Washington had slaves" precedent? As Sargon of Akkad referenced, morality evolveed and developed just like technology and other aspects of civilization. The Roman empire had several destabikizing religions and cults rise up, and persecution was the norm of the day. They were somewhat tolerant of multiculturalism, as long as citizens submitted to the primary Roman cultural tenants.

135 I think we are more or less fools to think we can know who was a good person in the ancient world, as opposed to good for the empire or good in some other historically evaluable sense. We have difficulty deciding which contemporaries are good men. Man has not become more honest since, and there's an ocean of time separating us from the ancients and the evidence. Then there's hindsight bias: many of them would not share our sense of goodness at any rate. That doesn't make them right. But always applying our measuring stick leads to the same kind of tunnel vision the left suffers from when evaluating historical figures.

Point taken. They did however do as He instructed to wait for that event. An event that, by the way, fulfilled the fourth spring Feast on its appointed day.
Christ did the same with His death (Passover), burial (Unleavened Bread) and resurrection (First Fruits) on their appointed days.

Next up, Feast of Trumpets. The first fall Feast.
At some point during the 2nd half of the 70th week of Daniel, the last Trump will sound. Christ will be seen coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 175 Titus, Vespasian's older son and emperor after him, was a pretty good dude. His army destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem when V. crushed the Jewish revolt in 70. He'd served as Praetorian prefect (chief of secret police too) for his father, and Romans thought he'd be as bad as Caligula had been. But he finished the Colosseum (I think), made a point of doing a favor for at least one person every day, sent aid to the Pompeii area after Vesuvius erupted, and other admirable work.

185 73 Peter probably carried a hefty amount of what we term survivors guilt. That he should have done more, but additionally, that he should not have denied Christ three times. His faith was found wanting and that probably haunted him.

So Christ appearing probably would have scared the crap out of him and also, steeled his resolve to not do the same again. If his faith demanded his death, then so be it.

For us grace type Christians, Peter is perfect example of imperfect Christians - Peter had doubts. He turned his back on Jesus, who was not notional to Peter. He knew for a fact that he was a real person, had witnessed the miracles in person. And yet - he was the Rock upon which Christ built his church.

Oh, and there was the Roman general who was captured by the Carthaginians during the first war with them. He gave his word that he would take their terms to Rome and then return. According to the story, he presented the terms to the Senate; they rejected the proposal; and true to his word, he went back to Carthage and was executed.

Yes, it might have been a story told to schoolchildren decades and centuries later. Even if it were not true, it shows that the Romans (once) valued upholding one's word -- that such values were to be instilled in children, instead of the idea that one can change sex by saying so.

To add to this: Our traditional carols say now that the Christ child "shivered in the cold," implying a wintertime birth. But it gets cold at night in desert climes. It doesn't necessarily mean it was bitterly cold with snow on the ground, or that it was in December. (And yes, I know the early Church cleverly lined the celebration up with the winter solstice, the festival of the Unconquerable Sun, when the days begin to lengthen again, to win converts from pagan faiths.)

They both strike as the Douglas Murray type of gay who think being gay is equivalent to eye color (ie, You're born thatway) and people should be celebrated for other reasons than sexual orientation. But Bernstein was married (I don't think Copeland was) so I feel some sadness for his wife.

The picture depicts Jesus after his crucifixion . It is based on an Apocrypha work about Peter .Peter is trying to run away from Rome during the persecution of Nero and he has a vision of Jesus carrying his cross so he goes back to Rome and is martyred.

No, that's ignorant. It's just...I identify with the children so much. They're so innocent, and pure. I never really had a childhood, because I was working all the time...

Not familiar at all with the man instituted feasts. Only somewhat familiar with Hanukkah.
The 7 instituted by God are like His prophetic calendar.

Many, including myself, look at that passage as what Peter said, not Peter himself, as that rock.

I don't (I don't hate Southerners either) and I think this in incredibly unfortunate if the division even extends to people whose parents and grandparents were not alive during the Civil War, but "Yankees" are demonized for this regardless, when conservatives ought to be sticking together.

Somebody has not listened to On The Waterfront.

Aaron Copland did not "happen to be gay." Possibly more than any other figure (except critics who did not perform), he was responsible for establishing a Gay Mafia at the center of the US east coast classical music establishment, and closed it to others. You either know about this, or you don't want to.

Piss, moan, bitch all day about the state of the culture, then throw your heads back and glug it down as the mood takes you. Always spoiling for a fight, but you can't figure out who to have it with. And you think Zappa was some kind of frat comedian.
