Open Thread: A Colorized Restored Variety Show from the Early 1940s

This is weird.

A powerful earthquake hit Japan.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 rocked a wide area on the Sea of Japan coast Monday, triggering a major tsunami alert and fire in the central prefecture of Ishikawa, with at least two people feared dead and crimping the festive mood of New Year celebrations nationwide.

The tsunami warning was issued for the Noto Peninsula in the prefecture before being downgraded hours later. It was the first time such a major warning had been issued since the 2011 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan areas and triggered the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

The quake, which also shook buildings in central Tokyo, occurred around 4:10 p.m., registering a maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale on the peninsula, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. A tsunami measuring 1.2 meters or higher reached Wajima Port in the region.

I'm making demi-glace. I started by roasting 11 lbs of bones and meat, as well as a buttload of veggies, then putting it in water and heating to a boil. It's simmering now, and will do so for at least the next 18 hours. At that point, I'll remove all the bones, meat, and vegetables. Then it has to be chilled so as to separate the fat, and then reduced from about 11 quarts of liquid to about 3.

If it was in the early 40's it was shown in the movies as a short subject or produced as part of a "soundie". Not on TV. Commercial TV here in the US didn't take off until 1946. The classic RCA 630-TS receiver leading the pack.

Her name was Bitsy McFilbert, the errant daughter of the Boston McFilberts.

After that show, she and her pantomime horse were recruited by the US gov't to scout potential islands in the Pacific for ambush attacks against Japanese warships.

Her airplane crashed on an island, where she discovered Amelia Earhart. The pantomime horse, Pansy, broke a leg in the crash. So, Betsy and Amelia ate him.

Soon, they ran out of food and Betsy fought a duel to the death with Amelia Earhart using coconut.

Bitsy won and ate Amelia Earhart with plenty of coconut sprinkles.

Years later she escaped from the island.

Unfortunately, she escaped to the Bikini Atoll, when the US gov't was testing it's nuclear weaponry.

In the ensuing atomic explosion she mutated into Godzilla. Unfortunately, Godzilla Bitsy was only four feet tall.

She was captured and kept in a Hong Kong Zoo, until she died of old age.

You can see her stuffed skin at the Chicago Museum.

I had the same feeling watching Thunderbirds last year (so long ago!) on a giant screen that is totally unlike anything the creators imagined it would be watched on.

Also, why does the sound literally disappear when the camera goes to the “horse”? Shouldn’t the microphones have picked up the actors’ footsteps?
