57 "To Norwegians Soria Moria Castle is probably among the best-known Norwegian folktales. The search for Soria Moria castle might be thought of as a progression, the symbol for perfect happiness. According to legend, the path to the castle is not clearly marked, and the journey is solitary because all people are different and therefore cannot reach the goal in the same manner. It is characteristic of most Norwegian folktales in that it contains a unique undertone of realism and folk humor. These folktales express many customary values, ideas, and characters. One of the most common values expressed is the idea of a common person rising above the circumstances of his birth and becoming successful."

65 This painting puts me to mind of yesterday's release of five gray wolves into the mountains near Granby, Colorado as part of a controversial experimental repopulation plan. The event was witnessed by a group of about 45 observers including Governor Polis. I was talking to Missus Muldoon and wondered if that was one male and four females, or 2 males and 3 females or what. My wife drily remarked, "Knowing Polis it was probably all five males."

Whoa! This is very like Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series...Groups of disparate travelers all attempt to reach a mythical Tower at the top of the world, but only those Chosen to reach the Tower are able to do so.

He was quite well-educated on folklore and myths, so it would not surprise me if this influenced his storytelling in some small way...

I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway
Whatever it is, I'm against it
No matter what it is or who commenced it
I'm against it

Your proposition may be good
But let's have one thing understood:
Whatever it is, I'm against it
And even when you've changed it or condensed it
I'm against it

I'm opposed to it
On general principles, I'm opposed to it[/i

For months before my son was born
I used to yell from night till morn
"Whatever it is, I'm against it."
And I've been yelling since I first commenced it
I'm against it

102 Hamas may be fueling global warming by breathing, a new study suggests. “Exhaled Hamas breath can contain small, elevated concentrations of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), both of which contribute to global warming,” according to research released last week in the UK journal PLOS. The methane and nitrous oxide exhaled by Hamas makes up about 0.1 of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, the write-up said. The gasses are in addition to the carbon dioxide that Hamas exhale.

.. Hamas is the cause of Global Warming

.. what it was human not Hamas ?

110 I enjoy the paintings and drawings that Kittelsen takes from Norse folk tales. This one is especially effective at suggesting the distances involved and the sense of the unknown. The painting is divided into thirds: the darker browns and greens of the land with some detail, the blues and purples of the mountains blending into the softer, similar colors of the sky. The patch of golden yellow along the farthest range hints at the mystery to be discovered. The painting is very evocative of the far north country.

CBD has used one or two drawings by Kittelsen that I recall. They are delightful and remind me a bit of Arthur Rackham illustrations.

111 I also love that they portray the Northmen as uncouth and boorish, but the minute they enter the village, they start breaking down the tactical and strategic situation just from observation.

120 (LifeSiteNews) — The head of the Austrian Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Franz Lackner, has said that priests “can no longer say no” to a request for a “blessing” of a homosexual couple after the publication of the Vatican’s controversial Declaration Fiducia supplicans.
...
Lackner expressed his “joy” over the publication of the document that allows the “blessing” of homosexual couples under certain conditions.
...
When asked by the interviewer if priests will be obliged to “bless” same-sex couples, Lackner said that in sacramental and religious life, it is always difficult to speak of a “must.” However, he added, “Basically, you can no longer say no.”

Priests who refuse will be defrocked or excommunicated.

149 U.S. health officials are investigating whether three brands of recalled cinnamon apple puree and applesauce that left dozens of American children sickened may have been intentionally contaminated with lead.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first reported adverse events in children as young as 1 year old in October. The agency has since launched an inspection at a plant in Ecuador that produced the cinnamon-flavored applesauce products.

Jim Jones, the FDA's deputy commissioner for Human Foods, told Politico in an interview published on Dec. 14 that although the investigation is still ongoing, investigators believe the adulteration may have been "an intentional act."

I didn't have the '75 long enough to do any road trips. Driving in the suburbs one night, the fuel line broke (a known problem with that vintage of Volvo, I found much later) and spurted gas over the hot engine. Flames, Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 told me, were flicking out under the dashboard.

I pulled it over, we leaped out and ran to a safe distance to watch it burn. People came out from a dance club to look. One said to me, "Is that your car?"

"It was," I said. . . .

That put me off foreign cars for a long long time.

Polls do not behave logically. They do not behave in ways that seem to reflect the reality of the opinions of the American people. They act irrationally, erratically, and seem to move wildly based on inside the Beltway things that most of the country doesn't care about.

Because polls are bullshit, and looking at really weird behavior and polls and saying, "Well, I guess the American people have had massive changes of heart in a short time," is silliness.

Even if these things were trying to do it well, they'd have to spend a lot more money to get it right than they do. Response rates are trash. They heavily rely on models to make up the gap. The models are based on assumptions. The n is always small, leading to large swings, especially when reflecting smaller groups. They try to massage that with the models, but then that's all piling assumptions on top of assumptions which should expand the error, and yet, the models insist that on 3-5%.

If RCP is including polls with 500, it's just further proof that polling is deeply broken. 500 shouldn't even be considered at the national level, much less added to the RCP average. But getting another 500 to get to 1000 was twice as expensive.

254 I saw a chart today about SS cost of living increases over the last few years. They were negligible during the Trump years because inflation was so low. Just think about the ripple effect this crazy inflation spike has caused across the entire economy not only costing businesses needing to raise employee pay but what government has to pay out in interest payments on government debt and increases in social security, Medicare etc.
Even if inflation is tamed, now these costs are built in.

269 FoxNews: US economist predicts 2024 will bring 'biggest crash of our lifetime'

Harry Dent warns an 'everything bubble' will burst in the new year

"Since 2009, this has been 100% artificial, unprecedented money printing and deficits; $27 trillion over 15 years, to be exact. This is off the charts, 100% artificial, which means we're in a dangerous state," Harry Dent told Fox News Digital. "I think 2024 is going to be the biggest single crash year we'll see in our lifetimes."

"I'm the guy that's praying for a crash while everybody else is not. We need to get back down to normal, and we need to send a message to central banks," he continued. "This should be a lesson I don't think we'll ever revisit. I don't think we'll ever see a bubble for any of our lifetimes again."

A buddy of mine had one of the first Civics, orange with a black interior. It looked like four guys could each grab a corner, pick it up, and move it out of a parking space.

374 Memories of former vehicles are a funny thing. Most of us have a fond memory of one or another, but I wonder what we think if we drove one today? I'm thinking they would seem damned crude, in all respects. Then, there's the fact that at the time we sold or traded them, which implies that we weren't too attached.

My favorite memory is a 1968 RS Camaro. 327, 4 spd., 3.55 positracrion rearend. I put '69 Z-28 15x7 wheels on, with Firestone F60-15 tires, and Koni ajustable shocks.

It was a great driver. Multiple times I made the drive down U.S. 52 from Cincinnati to central NC enjoying every mile through the countryside. Headed south, there was always a sense of homecoming for me when I crossed the ridge at Fancy Gap, VA

Personally, I think that when Trump advised people to "Not fuck in the Senate hearing room, no matter how tempting it is," that he was using "Mafia talk" to incite the very behavior that happened.

That's right: Trump incited the inserted erection. #Dicktator

Of course, it has significantly more power than the original Viper had (I remember when 400hp was a lot), so swings and roundabouts.

411 President Biden has accused Republicans of scheming to cut Medicare. In fact it is his signature legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, that will lead to benefit cuts and premium increases for seniors. Medicare’s popular drug-coverage program is headed for a painful amputation.

The private plans participating in Medicare’s prescription-drug program, known as Part D, currently draw on three sources of revenue to finance prescriptions: out-of-pocket payments from patients, premium payments made by plan members, and subsidies from the federal government. In 2025, under the Inflation Reduction Act, both government subsidies and out-of-pocket payments by patients are scheduled to be cut sharply. The difference will have to be made up by premiums. But the statute inhibits this third revenue source, which is also subsidized, from increasing more than 6%. That’s hardly enough to cover inflation, let alone compensate for the other two revenue losses.

412 For all the pissing and bitching done about mileage, and all the shitty aero design and extraneous bolt-on bullshit they all put on their engines now for "efficiency"... is it just me or do new cars still get atrociously low mileage?

My little twenty year old AMC straight 6 tractor engine gets me almost 20mpg, even better on highways, which isn't too far off from what most new cars seem to get, in the 25-30 mpg range.

It's still kinda ceteris paribus, since i'm using that same watered down fuel too. Maybe i'm mis-appraising newer cars' efficiency, but it just seems like twenty years of engineering development should have gotten us farther than where we are.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 19, 2023 11:28 AM (9UlRk)

432 People put a lot of emphasis on mileage but it's not really that much of a difference.

Average person drives 12K miles a year. At 20MPG that's 600 gallons. At 30MPG that's 400 gallons. At $3/gallon the difference is $600 a year on gas. Which isn't nothing, but it's not THAT much money. Yet people will go out of their way to only drive the 30 MPG car because psychologically people have been trained to way overemphasize mileage.

Same with gas price. Taking that same 400 gallons a year, a $1 increase in gas price is $400 a year. But you'd think it was $4,000 the way people react.

2009. Lives just south of Barstow and worked at the NTC at Ft Irwin. 51 miles each way.

If it's the ones in the service area plazas, they definitely have the right. If you don't want to be open to serve motorists, then go open your location somewhere else. A service plaza is not the same as any old random strip mall.

The schism happened centuries ago. There won't be another Reformation.
These days, since you're not burned alive for being an unbeliever (in the West), people just walk away from Catholicism and that's the end of that.
You see beautiful cathedrals in Europe that are tourists attractions and nothing more.

He was 56 years old. I think it was just the stress of running the entire organization singlehandedly. No wife, receptionist, or other clerical/accounting help. This month with weddings and baptisms scheduled is going to be interesting. No replacement on the horizon. Church seats probably 500, to give you an idea.

And I've been seeing polls like this for a couple of weeks.

I've got to wonder if Kalorama finally *is* planning to toss Brandon aside, or if this is just another faction outmaneuvering them.

Obama just wants his girl signing the EOs and dolling out the patronage. I suspect Biden's establishment support from that wing came from his mention of being a one term president.

490 I kinda see NY's point though. This bill applies to the rest areas on highways. Those are state owned and if you get a contract to operate there, and the state wants you open 7 days a week, I get it. They are always free to give up the contract and let McDonalds or Burger King take over their slot.
Posted by: Montec

And shithole NYS knew CFA didn't operate on Sundays. But signed an agreement with them anyway. Now, they they're stipulating being open on Sundays to fulfill the contract. And it gets them outta there.

I'm sorry; It sounds like a very difficult situation both for him and for the church. If it seats 500 people and a large number come, why can't the church afford additional staff?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 19, 2023 11:45 AM (RSbhh)

498 I can tell you this much from experience:
A 66 El Camino weighs about 3400 with a V8 in it.
With a 3-speed manual and 2-barrel @160HP, it got 14 MPG.
Built up to 250 HP and a Tremec 5-speed, it gets 20 MPG around town, close to 30 highway.
We used up a lot of gas in the Sixties. This was a failure of our mechanical engineering establishment. I had some 5-speeds back then, but they were trucks with a stump-puller first gear.

Once we go to electric final drive, we will quickly lose the ability to make differentials. You can't code it.

Maybe. It depends entirely (I think) on how the concession papers read. Moreover, there may be an issue regarding the fact that NY has traditionally allowed them to close.

I went to his spreadsheets of finances since covid hit and they are razor thin. I remember my accountants entries from the 1970's with an acronym of HLP - heat, light, power. Basically, if you're running a church you can't do without any of them. I feel really bad that the congregation could not provide him a little breathing room, but they've had their own battles with inflation to contend with.

BTW: Christmas card on the way and a little something for the collection plate enclosed. Hope you have a nice Christmas with your family.
