That could be a horse, with its head protruding upside down.

I've noticed that abstracts posted here get more questions and discussion about elements in the picture than do representational paintings. There are exceptions, but everybody is asking "What IS that thing?" about elements in an abstract, while we all knew that yesterday's art featured horses, men, dogs, a goat, and a castle, and our discussion centered on "What are they doing?"

Interesting story about that guy. His name is Vinko Bogatai, and he actually walked away from that fall with only minor injuries. 80 "French" (i.e., Muslim invader) students are outraged over being assigned a Renaissance painting that has nekkid chicks in it.

To their credit, the French school authorities seem to be ignoring their whining.

My take? If they don't want to learn Western culture, they should fuck right the hell off back to Outer Jackoffistan, where it's considered "racy" to have a painting of a sheep after it's been sheared.

107 From The Met entry:

"When General George Washington failed to recapture Philadelphia from the British in 1777, he led the Continental army in retreat to an encampment in Valley Forge, northwest of the city. In this panel, Lawrence explores the toll that these military setbacks and the brutal winter took upon the American troops during their six-month stay. The bandaged and bloodied figures in the background--framed by the discarded bayonets--turn away from the symbol of their violent defeat, a valuable warhorse, respectfully covered as its lifeblood slips away. In its emphatic finality, Lawrence's one-word title reinforces this low point in the war."

118 79 Well, the shapes and colors are interesting and the blood and bayonet catch the eye. But it means nothing without context. The images don't convey much by themselves. Once that context is provided the painting takes on a lot more emotion for the viewer.

I thought the same. I'm more familiar with Lawrence's Black history works so I went there. He also did some series, so I wonder if this is part of a group to help with context.

122 The DW has also begun producing children’s content as an alternative to the woke shows, although I have yet to dip into it because I am not a kid. Everybody says so except my wife, who isn’t so sure. She keeps saying something about me being a juvenile.

I know the Daily Wire has been making waves, not because they say so, but because I can see with my own eyes that even a company as mighty as Disney is responding to its threat to their bottom line. We already know that conservatives have dented Disney’s reputation, and the company is scrambling to repair it.

But nobody expected Disney to quaver when threatened with competition from a small company like the Daily Wire. Everybody, including me, appears to have been wrong. Disney appears to be worried that its competition could steal its audience not just in the short term but also in the foreseeable future.

From The Met entry:

"When General George Washington failed to recapture Philadelphia from the British in 1777, he led the Continental army in retreat to an encampment in Valley Forge, northwest of the city.

Posted by: BignJame

They could be a real pestlence to the opposing forces.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at December 13, 2023 10:03 AM (JrojV)

They were usually only used by a force besieging a fort or fortified position. Mortars could 'drop' their shell over the walls and ramparts, making troops and material behind the walls and in the rear vulnerable.. Unlike cannon which had a fairly flat trajectory. Mortars were rarely used in infantry and cavalry battles. They took a fair amount of time to emplace. They were mounted on flat, heavy platforms, not on wheeled carriages like field cannon. This meant they also took time to move, time the users may not have if their side retreats.

224 I like it & would hang this 1954 painting along with Lawrence's Victory and Defeat, 1955.

Not familiar with the artist, Jacob Lawrence, went to Met Museum dot org and found, 'Reckoning with American History in Jacob Lawrence’s “Struggle.”

It begins, "In this 1968 interview, Lawrence discusses the importance of centering Black contributions to U.S. history."

Further, "Lawrence was one of the first African American artists to gain broad recognition within the segregated art world of the 1940s, and he is renowned for his serialized projects, including “The Migration of the Negro” (1940–41) and “War Series” (1946–47), among other works. While The Met neglected so many talented artists of color throughout the twentieth century, the Museum was an early collector of Lawrence’s work, having acquired Pool Parlor in 1942, a gouache on paper that depicts a bustling Harlem bar."

Thank you

232 107 From The Met entry:

Shakey's used to have that, too.

That's not it though, it's the constant badgering by networks to get you to tone your stuff down, to "appeal" to a mass audience.

I'm in the minority on this, but I thought Seinfeld's earlier seasons were brilliant, and the thing became a caricature of itself as it went on. Until it was unwatchable.

430 I'm in the minority on this, but I thought Seinfeld's earlier seasons were brilliant, and the thing became a caricature of itself as it went on. Until it was unwatchable.

434 I think Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett were funny. Of course they were not stand up comics.

435 409 Don't know if this has been mentioned, but Andre Braugher, 61, actor Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide: Life on the Street passed away yesterday/overnight from a brief illness.

Oh, no! He was also in the movie, City of Angels.

I really enjoyed his body of work.

May he RIP.

Since we're talking about Larry David, Seinfeld was genius. I can't criticize Jerry since he did the smart thing, get off the train at Starville and enjoy life.

440 That is a dead horse in the foreground, covered with a golden sheet of Respect, and Gen. Washington's bloodied, defeated Yorktown soldiers walking away behind it...off to their winter camp at Valley Forge.
A Defeat that was only temporary.

441 Another bit of ART often misinterpreted is the Black Stable boy statue that was often placed in front of Homes...called racist now, it was in honor of Washington's volunteer groom, found frozen to death but still holding the Generals horse awaiting his upcoming attack...that would lead to Victory.

442 Afternoon.

It's kind of fucked up but I think as weird and confusing as it is at first it really opens up and tells quite an interesting story. So why the hell is their horse stuck full of bayonets? And was it the enemy's doing or theirs?

Would hang.
