9 MOMA Label:

After settling in Aix, France, in 1899, Cézanne ventured daily into the surrounding Provencal landscape in search of subjects to paint. Chateau Noir, a recently constructed neo-Gothic castle designed to mimic aged ruins, captivated him. He repeatedly represented this structure and also painted from its grounds, where he had an unobstructed view of nearby Mont Sainte-Victoire, another favored subject. As is typical of landscapes executed late in his career, Cćzanne applied thick paint in broad, multihued swatches.

36 There's a nice contrast between the cool blues and greens and the warmer golds. I like how the golds take up this small area in the center and lower right. It draws my attention but doesn't dominate my view.

There's also a nice contrast between the lines, forms, and movement within the work. The trees create this upward thrust and swirl around the edges of the piece while the building cascades gently downhill in the center.

49 There was a snarky line by Nevil Shute in his novel The Far Country about Cezanne: "The artist had modelled his style upon that of a short-sighted and eccentric old gentleman called Cezanne, who had been able to draw once but had got tired of it; this smoothed the path of his disciples a good deal."

64 Shute also has two of his characters, an Australian landowner and his wife, come to Melbourne to shop and look at paintings. They go into another gallery with an exhibition:

"The paintings were a little odd, because this artist was a Primitive, unable to paint or to draw, and hailed as a genius by people who ought to have known better. Purple houses that might have ben drawn by a five-year-old child straggled drunkenly across vermilion streets that led to nowhere and meant nothing; men with green faces struggled mysteriously and perhaps discreditably with ladies who had square blue breasts."

The landowner's wife says, "Let's get out of here. People must be mad if they like things like that."

Curtis delivers this line in a costume drama, something set in the Middle Ages I think, but with his customary Bronx/Brooklyn accent -- wildly out of place for the movie's setting.

The one in the link is a different one. You can tell because the one in the gallery is missing the branches in the top right. The castle is lifted more too. Cezanne painted many versions of the same subject. These are two similar paintings.

105 Fen and others mystified by the Taylor Swift thing - two articles to understand why people want Taylor Swift to get involved. It's an established thing, celebrities have been used for this purpose for years, happily do it to boost their careers and social standing (think Jimmy Kimmel working w/Schumer on Obamacare in monologues). Keep in mind that it's not just about influence (because yeah, they likely are mostly Lefties already) but flooding the zone with the message. If they're talking about Taylor's promoted issue they aren't talking about/noticing other things.

141 As seen here

In the early 1870s his style changed. Working alongside Camille Pissarro in the open air, Cézanne turned to landscapes and adopted the impressionists' broken brushwork and brighter colors. He exhibited with them in 1874 and 1877. Beginning in the late 1870s and increasingly through the next decade, Cézanne's handling of paint became more ordered and systematic. Back in Provence, rejected by critics and working in isolation, his style developed independently. His "constructive stroke," as it is often described, results from penetrating analysis. It represents rather than imitates visual effects. Color relationships render the fundamental nature and connectedness of what Cézanne saw and felt. In his late paintings, those made after about 1895, these color harmonies become more sonorous, autumnal, and the paintings more meditative and melancholy.

I object, Your Honor! I place in evidence The Dick Van Dyke Show. Rob Petrie was a talented writer and competent at handling situations. He could occasionally be a goof, mostly when he got into something over his head. But so could Laura. Both could and often were capable of doing both smart stuff and silly. It was why they seemed so real, I think.

In the painting Mont Sainte-Victoire and Château Noir, Paul Cézanne deals with his frequent preoccupation, which is the relationship between nature and architecture.

Friends avoided that a-hole trap, in that there was no "unlikeable" person in the group. No Louie DePalma, for instance. He would force himself into gatherings with his regular drivers, because the last thing they would do is invite him along. The six leads in Friends]/i] liked each other very much.

Originally the producers had it in mind for the character who evolved into Joey to be just such a jerk. Fortunately they came to their senses in time.

A goof, yes, but not an unlikeable, "Why would we invite Ross?" kind of jerk. True, he was Monica's brother and Chandler's college buddy, so they could hardly cut him out. But he was good-natured and had a certain courage. When Emily, his British fiancee, insisted that he have nothing to do with Rachel after the contretemps at the wedding in England, he vacillated for a little while, trying to keep everybody happy. But then he put his foot down and refused to cut Rachel out of his life.

262 Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) - Château Noir 1903-04

From MoMa: After settling in Aix, France, in 1899, Cézanne ventured daily into the surrounding Provencal landscape in search of subjects to paint. Chateau Noir, a recently constructed neo-Gothic castle designed to mimic aged ruins, captivated him. He repeatedly represented this structure and also painted from its grounds, where he had an unobstructed view of nearby Mont Sainte-Victoire, another favored subject. As is typical of landscapes executed late in his career, Cezanne applied thick paint in broad, multihued swatches.

The orangish building anchors the center in terms of color, luminosity and scale. It strikes me as the eye of the hurricane while the muted trees and sky in the complimentary blue-green are in motion around it. I have photographed such scenes and this painting manages to capture the literal and the abstract/spiritual nature of the everything. I have come across imitations of this style and they all lack the complexity and density of Cezanne's colors, there is where I find the poetry of this work.

Would hang.

Whiny and weak is not going to get your wife's motor going.

Of course she was a horrible b*tch most of the time.

Ironically most of the leftwing couples I know fit this template to a T.

360 Was never an avid watcher but I still remember an episode where Francis goes to work on a farm and the farmer has a thick accent (I think it was German) and talks about how he's enthralled by horses because they have such big bodies but such tiny legs. Line and the delivery still make me laugh.

It's amazing how even the silliest line in comedy can become memorable with great delivery and/or set-up.

The stupid "ski down the Alps into Paris" line by Lisa in "Green Acres" and it's use as an ongoing joke really made me laugh and still amuses me.

YMMV.

We need an updated version of such matchbooks. These would challenge the applicant to submit their "my oppression" whine and then enroll them in the appropriate university of "studies" degrees to get their certificate/diploma of being oppressively oppressed .

Funny. I was in a car with some coworkers a couple of days ago, and they got me to open up on Killers of the Flower Moon. I had the guy in the driver's seat just nodding along saying, "I agree completely."

437 At this point, warnings against Christian Nationalism, given the context of current day culture, are advertisements for Christian Nationalism.

No Casualties Reported After U.S. Embassy in Baghdad Is Attacked With Rockets

445 I watch this one YouTube channel of a real estate dude in NYC who does tours of apartments for rent. He does it in a 1/2 serious half comedic way. Fun to watch. Anyway one thing I’ve noticed is a garbage disposal is a big deal. Like he goes out of his his way to mention it. I find it funny that something virtually all homes and apartments in he US have had for decades is a luxury item in New York City.

Nobody knows about their future really, but God. Guy profiled in the NY Post today won a million dollars in a lottery twice-over two years. Some guy I know of got killed in a motorcycle accident recently . He was 26. We can plan as much as we can and have hope and dreams but the only time know we have is right now. The Book Of Ecclesiastes discusses this the vanity of life and attempting to be close to God.

Old waste lines are not the best at eating blended garbage. In Ukraine, in 5 star hotels, you are requested to not flush your shit paper down the toilet. They have a small trash can for used shit paper. Its disgusting.
