Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Watching things burnHow did we suddenly get such vocal support for "Palestine" in the West? Well, it wasn't as sudden as it looks. Ed Driscoll picked out a couple of good examples. Steven Hayward:This week's peak demonstration of leftist anti-Semitic madness comes to us courtesy of the Oakland City Council, where a resolution endorsing a permanent cease-fire in the Israel-Gaza war was met with this parade of insane people: "Okay," you say; "It's Oakland. The Bay Area. Krazifornia. What do you expect?" All true, but don't underestimate how widely spread, and supremely vocal, this sentiment is across the country, and it potential for ongoing malignancy in our body politic. Look no further than Atlanta, where pro-Hamas protestors showed up at First Lady Rosalyn Carter's memorial service in Atlanta, apparently taking lessons tastelessness from the Westboro Baptists. Keep in mind that Jimmy Carter was the most pro-Palestinian president in our history, and gave a huge boost to the slander that Israel is an "Apartheid nation." It is sometimes noted that in the 1960s, only about 5 percent of the college-age population were participants in the anti-war movement and the large protests they organized. (And I've been told by several older Boomer acquaintances that they attended anti-war protests chiefly to meet girls.) My friend John Tamny noted this fact recently, generously citing some of my own work in fact, to suggest the current pro-Hamas protests are unrepresentative and don't need to be taken that seriously. I disagree; the lesson of the anti-war movement of the 1960s--which by rapid degrees became an anti-American movement (remember "Amerikkka") - - is that it only takes a determined minority to de-range the politics and culture of a nation, with baleful results. Back in the 1960s the liberal establishment was befuddled by the New Left and didn't know how to respond, so it mostly capitulated. Seems the same thing is happening today after October 7. In the face of a demented, deranged left, our liberal establishment is once again calling for "dialogue."This kind of behavior is now just expected from the Left. Hayward's piece is a keeper. Can we shut down the universities? And then there's this. Maybe I'm repeating a theme, but: TikTok made Gen Z pro-Palestine we understand current affairs through video snippets I'm a student in one of Britain's largest high schools and know no one who supports Israel over Palestine. Some readers might find that shocking. Consider, though, how my generation gets its news. TikTok is today by far the preferred source of news for teenagers; YouTube is next, Instagram third.I accidentally had an online conversation with one of these types this week (while providing data to support a reasonable position take by her uncle). I was a "psychopath" for looking beyond "THEY BOMBED HOSPITALS". Never mind the warnings that the hospitals (other than the one accidentally bombed by Hamas-friendly forces) would be bombed, or the military installations in, under or around the hospitals. That was the definition of "genocide" to her. No quote from a source other than, say, the UN or a university professor was believable. I think I did get her to concede that the KKK engaged in terrorism during the 20th Century. Her uncle was not just picking on Muslims. It was sorta like a struggle session, though. And I don't think she represented the worst of the type. Anyway, the CCP now has a mechanism, through TikTok, to help the Western Left dream of repeating the success of the Left of the 1960s. along with every other institutional bauble in America, from the Brookings Institution, to Foreign Policy magazine, to the NHL and the NBA The Qatari government's American partners have pursued a range of damage control tactics since Oct. 7, when Hamas, a Qatar-sponsored terrorist group whose senior political leadership is based in the Gulf emirate, murdered over 1,200 people, killing over 30 U.S. citizens and kidnapping a dozen more. Qatari money has spread far across American life, but leading institutions do not often brag about partnering with governments that openly facilitate the work of a genocidally minded terrorist organization that records videos of its atrocities. Such relationships risk becoming a source of public shame, and raise the specter of long-term damage to an organization's reputation and brand. Then again, what the public doesn't know can't hurt it. Higher education, one of the last remaining industries in which the U.S. is still the unquestioned global leader, has proven particularly expert in shielding its favorite deep-pocketed investor from public scrutiny. In a new series of reports, a research consortium organized by the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy found that some $2.7 billion in Qatari funding made it to American colleges and universities between 2014 and 2019 without public acknowledgement from the institutions themselves. The universities only divulged these contributions, which also included some $1.2 billion from China and $1.06 billion from Saudi Arabia, through a Department of Education online portal set up in 2019 to track previously unreported foreign funding. This may not be a good time to send a kid for a semester abroad in Qatar. In large and small amounts, and through methods calculated to both attract and avoid public attention, Qatar accurately identified the centers of power in America and made sure they'd have their own piece of them, using official and semi-official largesse to purchase the support of America's academic, media, and entertainment leaders. Qatar has become a factor in both the United States and in world affairs through spending its money wisely and patiently, over long periods of time and in a way that enlists everyone from college administrators to magazine editors to NBA owners. Qatar's U.S. strategy is an extension of its successful policies in the Middle East, where a long-term financial and political commitment to Hamas has thrust Doha into the center of global diplomacy, with the effect of legitimizing both the Gulf emirate and its Islamist client in Gaza. Foreign Policy magazine, for example, which aims to provide expert reporting and opinion on the Middle East and surrounding policy debates, is the official podcasting partner of the Doha Forum and the only media organization whose logo appears on the front page of the website for the Doha Debates. Both events are a project of the state-funded Qatar Foundation. . .This kind of patient planning was also exhibited by Hamas in planning the 10/7 attack, even if their planning for what would come after may not have foreseen all possible developments. Could this have an effect on the young staffers currently protesting any pro-Israel policies of the U.S. administration? The IDF has announced that Hamas violated the terms of the current ceasefire and that it has resumed combat operations against Hamas in Gaza (below). The Times of Israel has posted a long story on the resumption of combat this morning . . . Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel and met with its war cabinet yesterday. He continues to caution Israel on the law of war, as though the IDF is some kind of a scofflaw. He made it clear that the Biden administration is unhappy with Israel and seeks to impose constraints on the operation of the IDF in Gaza. The Times of Israel covers Blinken's visit here. The Biden administration does not sound like a friend or ally of Israel. . . Today it is also reported that Hamas branded Israeli child hostages in case they escaped. The Times of Israel covers that story here. Blinken might want to warn Hamas that they stand to be whipped with a wet noodle if they keep it up.

The answer to Haiti is the same as the answer to Gaza. Both are polities where the people have gone feral. Both need to be invaded, occupied, and colonized. The occupying power has to make clear to the masses that they exist on sufferance alone, unless and until they take steps to civilize themselves. Turn missionaries loose among them in an effort to convert them to civilized religions. And sudden but painful death to anyone who molests a missionary, ruthlessly enforced. And ruthlessly suppress the natives' religious and/or social practices that perpetuate the backwardness.

243 Just saw a new video on Twitter (X) - IDF reveals video of dozens of Grad rockets they found stored in a UNRWA building in Gaza. Combine this with the reveal that UNWRA officials were helping to hide some of the hostages. Blinken has been demanding that Israel not attack or disturb any UN property. Don't think that's gonna happen. Many wonder why the IDF hasn't been able to destroy all of Hamas' rocket capability yet. The answer is because to eliminate that completely, the IDF will have to destroy every mosque, every school, every hospital, every clinic, and every UN building in the entire Gaza strip, and that will take a long time. Let me describe a different perspective in the current Israel/Palestine war.
I think Israel is the aggrieved in the current conflict. I believe Hamas is a terrorist organization that must be dealt with by Israel, in complete and resounding fashion to obtain any level of peace in their country. This will likely involve outcomes that have collateral damage. I also think that none of these realities are necessarily America's burden. We don't have to provide bombs or money or anything at all. We don't need to provide input on their issues and our input is actually interference. I would not give two shits if a group of Israeli students were decrying a crackdown on abortion or border crossings in America. America's policies are its own for the making and what Israel or Australia or anyone else thinks about it is irrelevant. BUT, when you involve American dollars and American military lives in the conflicts in Israel, now it does matter what Americans (including Free Palestine protesters) think about the issue, and those thoughts are divided. I think we should decouple from Israel, to both remove ourselves from the conflict and free Israel from our interference. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at December 02, 2023 12:17 PM (569hd) 119

The vast amount of volcanic activity on earth is on the Ring of Fire in the Pacific region that includes Japan. Horseshoe shaped pattern that starts around New Zealand, goes up the western pacific islands, across the Aleutian Trench to Alaska and down the other side of the Pacific through the west coast of the US to the southern tip of South America and down to Antarctica. Volcanoes have been going off on the Ring since the dawn of time. The volcanoes also produce far more greenhouse gases than man ever could which is why they don't report on them as enthusiastically as they should. Narrative protection and all that. Posted by: BurtTC at December 02, 2023 12:26 PM (QBaJw) I agree, and I should add; sometime during the last 40 years, our "great game" morphed from ensuring that Saudi and the Gulf States will continue to be a reliable supply depot for the western alliance, into every politician, government, and NGO realizing that they could exacerbate the conflict for their own immense personal profit. The Clintons were heavily "invested" in Haiti. They made a royal mess of the place. So, on the one hand you have an idea what the US would look like if the Clintons remained in political power to a greater extent here. Not that Obama and *biden are any better. They're not. Perhaps worse.
But Haiti could have pulled itself out of the sewer, but didn't. Whether that's the Clinton's fault is arguable. They did funnel a lot of money into the place. Yeah, it was a scam. Refining capacity is our Achilles heal, IMO. They are big, few, and extremely flammable. The US deliberately move the USS Liberty to be closer to the shoreline. Because the survailance technology on that ship would tell the Pentagon and the White House what the hell was going on in the 6 Days War. No good Sig Int satellites than, and the monitoring stations in Cyprus were mostly UK, and could not pick up the local tactical transmissions. That volcano looks like they call a'a in Hawaii. Chunky, crumbly, and slow. Like a gritty push being extrude from a cyst. Tends be relatively low temperature and lots of gas bubbles in it and low desity when it hardens. Lots of sharp edges like broken glass. Tears up your tires real good when you drive across it.
The other flavor of lava is lapoepoe, hot, fast, and fluid. Lava fountains are common with it. if you are a long ways from the fissure it can be fairly safe. Locals used to get close to the lava river and dip bamboo into it, cath a glob, and put it into molds to make ashtrays, tiki gds, etc. Last significant eruption in Hawaii was that type. Some guy was sitting on his porch a few hindred yards from a fissure when it burped and a freakish stray lava bomb flew and smashed his leg. Shattered bone and 3rd degree burns. Posted by: NaCly Dog at December 02, 2023 01:07 PM (u82oZ) As you said, I believe the strike on the Liberty was an accident of war. But I also note that the Israelis would not have forgotten that the Americans took the Egyptian's side in the 1957 war. And that if they hadn't, the 1967 war would never have happened. The main reason I think the US supported Israel in the 1973 war is that the Soviets by then were well on the way into making Eqypt and Syria Soviet satellite states, so the US had to oppose them. After they performed so badly, the Soviets began to lose interest. Not completely, but they put their efforts elsewhere. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 02, 2023 01:14 PM (S6gqv) 271

Went out yesterday with my daughter to run some errands and we saw a cute, very visible set-up for a local charity's annual toy drive. They were in the front parking lot of a prominent mall at one of our main street's business intersections. Sparkly lights, decorations, Santa's elves...all very high profile.
On the way home from the errands, we noticed a small pro-Palestine rally ( about 7 men and one woman wearing keffiyehs and holding the flag of Palestine. ) They positioned themselves up directly across from the big toy drive. Just as I was grumbling that 'they' are crapping on Christmas everywhere, my daughter pointed out that they probably picked that spot because the local news trucks were across the street swarming/filming the toy drive. We live here and didn't know that there would be news trucks at the toy drive. Somehow, the protesters not only knew, but got together to get some on-air time, for free. ..... I'm gonna be an unreasonable person to discuss this with, mostly because I don't buy into "official positions". We aren't officially conducting warfare with Russia right now either. We merely provide, weapons, intel, training, funding, technology and contracted personnel. And Russia isn't officially at war with Ukraine. They are conducting a Special Military Operation. There are lots of "official positions". Few of them match up with what people see with their eyes and can reasonably assess. I'm not a lawyer trying to convince a jury, just an average Joe describing what I can reasonably ascertain through history and my own eyes. These are only my conclusions. Yours may vary from mine. And you may say your's are more accurate because they include "official explanations", I will concede to you that you are accurately describing the official positions of the US military. But I don't believe that the Pentagon just needed briefings like fans ringside at a boxing match. I believe the intel was likely being shared with Israeli defense, which in my view makes them party to the war. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at December 02, 2023 01:21 PM (onFzJ) 285

IIRC the Russians have substantial military assets in Syria. The naval base at Tartus specifically. A CTG in the Eastern Med is as much a signal to Moscow as it is to Iran, Egypt, Jordan and Israel.

He continues to caution Israel on the law of war
Since they're going above and beyond what's actually required by LOAC (Law Of Armed Conflict, not just war), Blinken is a liar or an idiot (or, likely, both) in lecturing them on anything. By the actual Geneva Conventions (that have been signed by everyone, not just the handful of extra, stupid ones we haven't even made legal, yet), when Hamas, as the actual governing body of Gaza, attacked (act of war) and committed atrocities, every single fighter in uniform became subject to immediate execution upon capture as a war criminal. (Unless they could argue distinctions that could be checked. But Hamas isn't even organized sufficiently to provide that sort of data.) When the civilians came in and ALSO participated in those atrocities, THEY became subject to the same sort of repercussions. Israel had a right to provide punitive, collective punishment against the "civilians" in Gaza. When they hide behind "civilians" and utilize "civilian" infrastructure as shields for military personnel, equipment, and operations, THERE ARE NO LONGER ANY "INNOCENTS" in Gaza for purposes of LOAC. Period. Posted by: GWB at December 02, 2023 03:58 PM (HMvgH) 359

Yeah. And many still listen to Andrew Branca. I assume some would actually behave according to the "Rules of Self Defense" in the critical moment. My point being ? When it's a real fight, there are no rules. It's a boxing match when rules are involved. That's a critical difference. When you send troops over to kidnap those of mine you don't kill ? Fuck the rules of war. Israel is acting with entirely too much restraint. That's their problem. Posted by: How Things Work at December 02, 2023 04:03 PM (6/aEZ) 360

Serious question to ponder -- why would anyone contribute to a site where they are potentially shadowbanned or suppressed? Is this a point the Right needs to stress to undermine the Lefty social media empire? On reddit it is out of control and although I only ever contributed to technical subs and only when I was provably correct and helping out others, I often got shadowbanned because the mods are really horrible and have decided they know more than everyone about anything so they must prevent wrong speak.
