Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: In Response to Democrats’ Success with Abortion Initiatives, the GOP Needs to Drive Turnout by Using Ballot Initiatives that Favor ConservativesDid you hear about the referendum last week in the red state of Ohio to enshrine abortion rights in its state Constitution? It passed resoundingly, 57% to 43%. (“Abortion rights advocates win major victories in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia” – Washington Post) Well, what about the results of the referendum to ban child gender transitions? Oh wait, there wasn’t one. What about the referendum to ban sanctuary cities? Nope, that wasn’t on the ballot anywhere either. Conservatives have got to start using ballot initiatives on issues such as these to drive our turnout and put the left on defense. This tweet from Patrick Ruffini is spot on.After Ohio's vote Tuesday to protect abortion rights, Democrats are rushing to get similar measures on the ballot next year in key states such as Arizona, Nevada and Florida — partly to boost President Biden and down-ballot Democrats. With the economy, border, and foreign affairs in disarray, Democrats have virtually nothing else to campaign on except abortion, so of course they are pushing it. Arizona and Nevada are winnable states for the GOP. The Democrats aim to get abortion initiatives on the ballot in those states. Why it matters: In the face of bleak polling on the economy, abortion continues to be a winning issue for Democrats — one that could motivate otherwise uninspired voters to turn out and keep the White House in the party's hands. Voters now have explicitly endorsed abortion rights via ballot initiatives in seven states since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year — in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, Vermont and now Ohio. The wins are boosting confidence among Democrats that similar ballot measures — and candidates who cast the high court's Dobbs ruling as a government assault on individual rights — can help the party ride the backlash in the 2024 elections. What popular initiatives that favor conservatives will the GOP be getting on ballots to drive turnout? The otherwise red state of Kentucky re-elected Democrat Andy Beshear last week in an election which was very much about abortion. Per Decision Desk HQ, 79% of Biden’s 2020 voters turned out for the November 2023 election, whereas only 53% of Trump voters did the same. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1
I don't live in OH anymore, praise the Lord. Did they word this in a way that voters didn't know what they were voting on? Happened a couple times when we lived there.

What popular initiatives that favor conservatives will the GOP be getting on ballots to drive turnout?
++++ None. The GOP hates its base and doesn't want anything its voters want. The party will, at best, do *nothing* to advance anything approaching a reform agenda. At worst - and more likely - it will work against anyone trying to do the same. Candidates will be "moderate" Uniparty types. Ballot initiatives - if any - will be "moderate" soft-prog issues and positions. If a popular, non-Party initiative gets traction, the GOP folks on the committees will block it. You can be sure they'll do aggressive signature verification and disqualify whole tranches of petitioners with no recourse. The GOP does not win on any terms other than the current status quo. Barring that, the GOP would rather lose. They do not want to cater to some notion from the rubes that they ought to achieve something. I was wondering if gun rights would be a good referendum item...there are many fairly apolitical voters that strongly support gun rights, but the general public is fairly anti-gun, and the Left is rabidly so. Would it be dangerous to have a 2nd amendment-style referendum guaranteeing gun rights at a State level, or would it be counter-productive?
Lefties are coming out regardless, especially with abortion nonsense, and if the referendum is broad enough (just enshrine right to own/possess guns), the general public won't care much. in Kali, we do use the ballot initiative system. And the Gov't vets conservative initiatives with a microscope to invalidate signatures, and if enough signatures survive that process, mis-label and mis-describe the initiative as negatively as possible to turn off voters. Then the Left's allies across the country start a media campaign demonizing it. And even with all that, if it passes, some liberal judge will overturn it as "unconstitutional" on some penunbra of the foreskin of some supposed "right".

The wave of advertising on that issue was largely bankrolled by the renewable energy industry. This election was about energy and delivered to those special interests the legislature they needed to stay in control of that agenda. Dominion Energy Virginia increased its donations to Virginia state politicians six-fold in just four years. The other major donors in the energy regulation arena, Clean Virginia Fund, and its founder, have done much the same. People understand the issue. They’re just lopsidedly pro choice on the legal side of things. You’ll notice the only time really strict abortion laws pass is when it’s done by a legislature and there’s no ballot initiative available to voters. All 50 states would vote for legal access to abortion if it was on the ballot. It might be 3 months or it might be 9 months but it would be available. Ohioan here.
Ohio is a simple majority 50%+1 to amend the state constitution. We tried to change it to 60% threshold in August, but it was rejected by the same margin that the abortion measure was approved, 43/57. The amendment was deceptively written to mask that it legalizes all manner of abortion at any time for any reason. The pro-abortion ads focused on rape, incest, and "miscarriage care". The ads were fully deceptive on the nature and purpose of the amendment. When you're hellbent on killing children, telling the truth isn't a priority. There were a couple pro-life PACs who tried to run counter advertisements, but when you're trying to explain why the deceptively written amendment is deceptive (which is hard to to in 30sec)...to a people who are increasingly lacking a moral foundation and critical thinking skills...
I’m just pointing out human nature, people instinctively understand it’s bad for society to have millions of unwanted babies that can’t be taken care of. It’s evil, but we need to stop pretending the “skanky ho murderer” tactic is going to win the day. Posted by: Equate at November 13, 2023 11:49 AM (PDIUS) 209

Posted by: Duke Lowell at November 13, 2023 11:47 AM (u73oe) There are some kinds of moral problems, like adultery, that the Gov't really should stay out of. It's wrong, it happens. Posted by: FeatherBlade at November 13, 2023 11:46 AM (ou9hh) This goes back to a post from last week, but Emmie had what I think is a solution: tell the truth. Once they know that it's a vanishingly small percentage of all abortions, that will begin to wake the public up to the truth about the procedures. It worked for smoking. If a Republican 10 years ago, had said, he’s OK with abortion up to 12 weeks, everyone here would call that a pro-choice position.
Thats basically the same abortion laws France has and much of Europe has. It’s not pro life, it’s a compromise. ------------- From a campaign rhetoric standpoint, that is because the Dem position was "safe, legal and rare" which led to a bi-partisan bill against late term abortions. Clinton vetoed, but he still took out that position. However, the Court's Roe decision made that a non-issue, because Roe, then Casey, was far more expansive than people thought. She's elected by the other state GOP officials, and there is not one of them that is worth any more than a warm bucket of spit. They owe their jobs to maintaining the status quo, and Romney was going to keep the cash flowing to them.
Back around J6, the RNC gave Trump a choice. Stand down now, or get not a penny in defense when the Dems come after you legally. You nailed it. People may not want to read this, but life is a boutique issue. They feel compassionately about it and see abortion as murder. Most people do not, though. Think how you feel about transgenderism, and you are in the majority there. Many if not most view the pro-life position in the same manner, as a weird outlier. To be clear, I do not see the pro-life position at all in the same way as child sexual mutilation, but as a political issue both are losers. Dobbs was correctly decided. We are now seeing the state responses to it, and that's how it should be. I disagree that every state will enshrine abortion as a right (many loons see it as a sacrament), but the fact is most will. Of course, bans on child sexual mutilation also would pass overwhelmingly in most states but as we know the Left doesn't respect elections results if it allows a free and fair election at all. Nobody is trying to take away your ability to murder your unborn child. What they are trying to do is set limits and conditions that on what is reasonable to protect the most vulnerable amongst us.
Remember that phrase- "if it saves just one life"? Like it or not as a society we have a moral obligation to protect the unborn. This is about what that obligation is. Unfortunately, Democrats have been successful in saying that Republicans want to take away that "right". Which is not true. What they want to do is set reasonable limits and provide alternatives to terminating a child. If you look at the poll breakdowns, a clear majority don't support abortion up until birth. They also agree there should be reasonable limits. But as usual, the GOP fails for make simple arguments, have a strategy, and execute on that strategy in a clear and concise way that achieves its goal. One more reason to completely wipe incompetent relics who have run a losing playbook for the GOP, I'm looking at you Rona and consultants, from the earth. 131 On the abortion issue, that is very depressing to contemplate. I don't know what to do about it.
--------------- Take comfort in knowing that science and morality are on your side. What happened in OH sucks, but Texas has done a good job reducing abortion. Start by taking the wins you can get, such as eliminate abortions in 3rd trimester - better yet - eliminate after 1st if you can. Move the window in your direction. ______________________ Precisely. I know that some of my fellow pro-lifers would consider it compromising on evil, but issues like this are long term battles. Roe took close to 50 years to overturn. Look how long it took to abolish slavery. Every small step forward saves babies. Take the Ws. Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at November 13, 2023 01:28 PM (uY1j2) 313

We need to push harder. Pro-deathers get away with muttering about 'cells' while supporting decapitating newborns with one toe in the womb. They bring up "for the safety of the mother" as if there has ever been a single pro-life law, ever, which retracted self defense rights.
We have a generation of GOPe candidates who know they have today their prolife, but can't even formulate what that means. Posted by: Karen at November 13, 2023 04:18 PM (lEkG4) 315
