  • The Biden Administration is set to unveil a "sweeping" executive order on AI next week. (Washington Post) (archive site)

As an executive order, it can only affect the federal government, and the problem I see is that the order is unlikely to go far enough in curbing government use of AI bullshit.

  • In which academics reap what they have sown. (The Verge)

The story tries to pin the blame on conservatives, even though nobody in the story is to the right of Mao. A typical AWFL college student goes off the deep end and files Title IX complaints - and this is her mistake - against every lecturer she ever had contact with.

No. Single out the weakest animal from the pack and take it down. If you charge in they're going to see you coming and stomp you.

  • Boeing has now lost more than $2 billion - which used to be a lot - on two new Air Force jets. (CNN)

As in, two planes, not two new jet fighter programs.

Air Force One A and One B - I guess - were supposed to total $3.9 billion. Since the contract was signed during the Trump Administration, it's fixed-price, not cost-plus, so Boeing gets to eat the loss.

Which of course means that they pass that loss on to customers, rather than the government passing the overrun on to taxpayers in the more traditional way.

  • Where ae all the laid-off workers from Big Tech going? (Dev Interrupted)

They're writing RPG IV for Mutual of Omaha.

I mean, not all of them, but there were a lot of boring companies that actually do stuff that were looking for programmers, and if you move from California to Nebraska you can take a hell of a pay cut and still have more left over at the end of the month.

  • Team's Cardea Z540 is a 12GBps PCIe 5 SSD. (Tom's Hardware)

While PCIe 5 is in the "I still don't need it" category, it's only about twice the price of PCIe 3 storage and more than three times as fast. It might even make a noticeable difference in some things.

    Maybe.

15 Boeing is one of the few companies, check that, likely the only major company in the US that has traditionally always been supported by both parties not just in rhetoric but in deeds.

I realize the Dems have gone full on anti American commie, but up. ‘til know, no company has had such bipartisan support as Boeing. If the details are needed, they are there for anyone to pull up for debate.

Boeing tries to wreck itself every ten years or so, mostly because of unions and incompetent management. Google Phil Condit and when Boeing stock hit $29.

So much of American greatness is held back by our own doing. You will never see the French, Japanese, Russians, etc hold themselves back and reduce their own wins like the Anglosphere in this age is want to do.

Couple this with Americans not wanting to take any responsibility for their own stupid decisions ("I know! Let's blame free trade!!!" for example), and you see a terrible problem.

23 Evening and morning to all! Up early for another day at the electron mines. Right now on MeTV there's a 1974 Barnaby Jones episode dealing a murderous computer programmer, a sleek well-dressed fellow played by James Olson. Interesting to see, twenty years before the 'Net and more than ten before PCs became widespread, the attitude people had toward the room-filling machines with tape drives and tape storage, etc.

I wish I'd gone into that back then when I was in college. Of course, it would have meant dealing with punch cards and the like.

I am a history guy. I like history booze in the history of booze if you will match me on that subject lol.

But the first time I encountered the internet was 1984. I was at a school that had post grads, before college. They were talking to others afar on their pc. I thought nothing of it because other than them, no one cared or was affected by it. Looking back, it was a big deal I guess.

The first person I knew who had a computer was a rich kid in my neighborhood who had an apple 2, I mean the neighborhood wasn’t poor, but parents weren’t shelling out $2000 for a home computer for the their kids. That was probably 1982 or somewhere around that.

32 The cool thing in the '70s about computers was that they were mysterious. And if you knew how to work with them, you were part of that mystique. Almost like the arcane knowledge of doctors. As I imagine it, a department would bring you or your team a report request. You would take the offering, the report specs, and disappear back into the the temple, and emerge some time later with the result; and the non-initiated had no idea how you'd done it.

As I say, I imagine this; I never worked in a place like that. But it would have been cool. And I wonder if we might not have been better off if we'd stayed with that.

My old man purloined an IBM XT from an office getting decommissioned in the 80s. I made a few upgrades to it including a "sound card" for a flight simulator game. Someone bought me a high speed 9600 baud modem and it came with ads for Genie, AOL, and Prodigy. Genie required a cc for the free trial, never did it. Tried AOL, wasn't great (late 80s). Stayed on prodigy for a while.

The primary is being challenged with an aggressive writing debate by the guy who came in second there is also a weird group of people right of center who say their do not respect parties And we should all come together.

Again, this county is +30 for Trump, but the conservatives here and the Republicans are legitimately trying to find a way for a Democrat to win. This is why a truck nothing with these weirdos like Gaetz I don’t give a damn about him. He never mattered, and you never will in my mind.

64 My first computer experience was in the Job Training Partnership Act-funded education for displaced workers program in 1988. We had Leading Edge-brand PCs, though we learned to type on IBM Selectrics. Software was WordStar, IBM's own DisplayWrite, WordPerfect, and DBase III Plus. And some acquaintance with BASIC.

The first machine I bought for myself was from a company called CompuAdd: a PC 8088 with DOS 3.2. I set things up myself, added a modem so I could send my COBOL programs to the compiler at school, and saved stuff to floppy disks (5.25") so I could load it at work and print documents (an impact printer, but fast). Wrote some short stories on it in WP, as I recall.

Oh, yeah. Unity. The same problem existed then as now. We will keep making the conservatives promises of future action, but hold on, now is not the time. We don't want to disrupt negotiations with the dems on [important issue] or pursue this controversy so close to an election.

We are fed the fuck up, not going to play the game anymore. But, yet, it is Gaetz' fault for causing disruption. When we have to negotiate with dems on an important issue. And we have a big election coming up....

I mentioned before my own county in a deep red area. It is +30 Trump but the infighting is legit trying to give the seats away. You have Dems that are moving in as a horde because why not? Their states suck. You have uncontrolled immigration from the south of the USA.

We have a Republican winner going for the state senate. Opposing him is the guy that came in second, he is actively funding a write in campaign.

There is also a list of right of center candidates that call themselves no labels. All the dems need to do is muster their 40 percent that is growing.

I am seeing on a micro scale exactly why Republicans are getting trounced and they’re doing it to themselves.

Hmmm. One of the key points about that series is that you are supposed to take the role of the Avatar, the embodiment of the Eight Virtues (Honesty, Compassion, Humility, etc.). You tend to get punished in the game when you stray from the Virtues.

In today's world, you'd be expected to embody their opposites to be considered "heroic."

100 The 'new' Air Force Ones are 747-800s that had been sitting there at Boeing because the Russian airline that ordered the two planes well failed.

Then the modifications to make them Air Force One started and the prices started to climb. One of the most expensive things that had to be done is basically rewire both planes to bring them up to the current standards, miles and miles of wiring.

And yeah Boeing, how goes your cost overruns on the KC-46A and the glitched remote boom software?

Is the word no other issues if it didn’t matter what others thought I would’ve gone for Italian that’s not fair because there were other reasons why I didn’t go for Italian, though that is the language I wanted to learn most.

I really enjoy studying foreign languages, considering some of the things people waste their time with I think studying the languages is better. My problem is I like both Spanish and French. It is difficult to decide and now I have about 6000 words in each language, and if you put me to it, I’m not sure which one I would say to you.

111 I do life when Americans repeat the garbage they’re told that Spanish is easier than French. Nothing could be further from the truth. Spanish is much more difficult than French a huge percentage of English well over 30% comes directly from fridge so you have the vocabulary.

People say Spanish is easier because it’s more phonetic, but that is simple something you get a hold of very early when studying a language.

Spanish has much more difficult verb tenses the deeper you get into the language the more difficult it becomes. If your only goal is to speak with someone you meet on the street for sure French is easier. I like them both and that screws me up because once I get really good at one I want to go back to the other thing again is beats watching TV.

130 119 they are all close it would be very difficult to prove that Spanish is closer to Italian then French is to Italian they all come from Latin. The thing that trips people up over French is the pronunciation. If you see the written word, you can see how close they all are. Anyway, it’s a very interesting discussion and an interesting study.

The thing that is clear is English gets more from French than any other Latin language, so there is that.

149 131, I love to discuss the variations with Latin languages. Maybe CBD will ask me to write about it someday I don’t think I can write but if you ever asked me to I would do it.

I have a story about the term, sure beard that is interesting. If you look at the old-school Tecate beer cans, they would give the term for beer in various languages. They would give the terms in German, English, Italian and Spanish. In English it is Beer, French Biere, German bier, and Italian Birra. In Spanish it is Cerveza.

No, this is exactly the type of thing I enjoy looking into. Probably most people will immediately think what is wrong with the Spanish? It turns out that all the other countries base their term for beer on with the Germans created with hops barley, malt water etc. somewhere around the 1500s.

But the Spanish term Cerveza is also based on a fermented beverage that came from grain. The Spanish term Cerveza is older than the term for beer, it is not wrong. It is just an term for the product. In this case I give the Spanish plaudits, their word is older, and has more standing.

My problem is the reality that French people don’t move here they’re just like Americans they think their country is better than anyone else, and they have no desire to go anywhere else. For the most part, what we hate about the French is what we love about ourselves they think they like us and that’s what we don’t like and this is from the biggest conservative ever and I have studied this particular phenomenon for many decades is actually a very interesting thing to research.

155 Outside of their market dominance in commercial aircraft, Boeing is a traditionally government fix cost contractor.

Anytime they bid fixed price they post a loss.

This is typical of the big box aerospace companies. There is a tremendous risk involved in this business sector and cost plus is how that risk is managed.

It's not like the government can write clear and concise specifications. And like any business, they will take advantage of their customer's dumb assery.

169 I said that people think in this country the Spanish is easier than fridge. I already said that I know that to be true.

The reality is, they are simply wrong. French has way more words in common with English than Spanish. It’s not even close if you learn the history of the Normans invading England and how they change the language, you would know that.

French uses about five tenses of verbs, Spanish uses eight or nine in common language. In no way is it easier to become fluent as an English speaker in Spanish and French I say this as a native English speaker who used to be the most French hating person ever. I grew up, though it took a while.

I like both languages, but it is simply boss to say Spanish is easier to learn as a native English speaker. There’s nothing that proves that and you can’t find anything online from a legitimate professor that says that is so.

180 I’m old enough to remember when car thieves stole a vehicle in order to resell or take it to a chop-shop.

These days of Democrat Urban Utopias unfortunately coincided with the Hyundai/Kia USB hack. So now the thieves just steal for quick transportation to commit other crimes and/or go on crime sprees like they’re living in a Grand Theft Auto game.

The two numbskulls from Vegas who killed the retired police chief and San Franpyscho’s newest crime blotter story from the Bay Area are just the latest example. Is this a TikTok trend or are we purposely raising generations of narcissistic psychopaths?

It’s become clear to me how we now live in a society that’s like a combo of Brave New World and 1984, plus this new addition of A Clockwork Orange to the mix.

I really don’t see how this can end well.

There are many regional variations. The way Mexicans speak it is not the way the Spanish speak it, or the Cubans, or the Argentines.

198 157 keep thinking Latinos are not judging your pronunciation. All gringos what is they are studying French or Spanish have the same problem they don’t wanna sound like a character teacher, so they sound nothing like the language they’re trying to speak. They become a caricatures of themselves because they don’t try.

And I’m saying is again because I have all of history and Wikipedia and dictionary’s to prove it. There are way more English words that come from French then Spanish period. Sorry try again.

And I study Spanish and I love Spanish, but the BS about French is just dumb. It’s just harming people and telling people not to try something based on absurdities.

I notice the Democrats don't care. They're willing to leverage every bit of power they hold. They're going to pursue their goals no matter what.

If. like in 2010, they get wiped out having implemented some egregious piece of legislation, well, there's another election down the road and it's not like the Republicans will undo what's been done.

202 Fahrenheit 451, too. Good call.

How is it that these authors 50, 80, 90 years ago could foresee all of these societal trends and warn us, yet our human civilizations keep on striving to emulate these dystopias?

Is it the result of chaotic human nature or some kind of top-down enforced plan by our psychopathic, amoral, elites?

It’s getting to be surreal.

Interesting that in Italian cognato (co-nee-ah-toe) is a male in-law. The female of course, ends with an A.
In Chemistry we say cognate experiment meaning similar/following similar methods to make similar compounds.

205 The biggest mistake Americans make when speaking four languages is not going all in. It probably comes from the hard left but no one wants to offend anyone but the irony is speaking French or Spanish was an American accent offends everyone and it just sounds stupid. I’m not putting down anyone trying to learn I’m saying lean into it, you have to let it go and really go for the pronunciation, Spanish or French.
