Menendez and his wife, Nadine, last month pleaded not guilty to corruption charges alleging that they used his influence to pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. In the indictment Thursday, federal prosecutors alleged that Menendez's wife and Hana "worked to introduce Egyptian intelligence and military officials to Menendez for the purpose of establishing and solidifying a corrupt agreement." In this agreement, Hana, with assistance from Daibes and Uribe, "provided hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes to Menendez and Nadine Menendez, in exchange for Menendez's acts and breaches of duty to benefit the Government of Egypt, Hana, and others, including with respect to foreign military sales and foreign military financing," prosecutors said.

I strongly suspect that this is why Menendez is getting the business.
He's safe to take out. NJ will appoint someone at least as shitty and radical to replace him. He is not a major power player so much as a well-established middle player and that kind of player can be replaced.
And so they will take him out and the DoJ can say, "SEE! WE'RE EVEN-HANDED! ONE STANDARD OF JUSTICE! We wouldn't have prosecuted Menendez if there was some kind of double standard like you MAGAts always bleat about! This alone reeks of politics. It's rare for any bank's "Private Bank" division to accept any client with under half a million dollars - and a level that low is unusual. Wells' thresholds aren't published (as far as I can see quickly), but it's much more normal for the amounts required to be $5 million or more.
So either Hunter had elite "private banking" but no money - in which case it was a sleazy political gimmie because of his dad - or he had elite "private banking" with millions of dollars under management - in which case it's obvious corruption.

Only 10% or so are actually any good at graft. They're the ones who actually get rich by insider trading and such. The rest are really bad at it and end up relying on the party apparatuses to fund their lower-end government lifestyles by providing money for re-elections and such.
They'll happily take $10,000 for a meeting from anyone, but they're so unimportant to the big players trying to move policy that it's easier to pay the top dogs and then let the top dogs run the back benchers in Congress.
So, they end up indirectly being foreign lackeys. They're more just party lackeys directly.

Well, we know for sure one was labelled a "college fund" for his daughter. So I imagine he probably had lots of "college funds" in the Biden crime syndicate.

It's just weird to me to see people falling for this blatant level of propaganda. Especially in a post- Iraq / Trump / Ukraine war world, where it was laid bare for all of us how corrupt and propaganda-driven our media is.
In other words, in what other context would we think it's okay for a hospital to not treat patients? The US Military has always (as far as I know) done our best to treat enemy soldiers in any war we have fought. Threw them in POW camps afterwards, but always took pride in the way we treated enemy soldiers and enemy civilians.

In neither scenario does the US think it's okay to deny people life saving medical treatment, or summarily execute them.
We either put them in POW camps, or (if theyre not soldiers and their actions happened on US soil), they go through our civilian criminal justice system.
Either way, they do get medical treatment if required.

I believe we've had these discussions around these parts before. From what I recall, that very same Geneva Convention explicitly says enemy combatants who are not properly identified by uniform are considered to be war criminals, and explicitly says summary execution is an option.

In neither scenario does the US think it's okay to deny people life saving medical treatment, or summarily execute them.
We either put them in POW camps, or (if theyre not soldiers and their actions happened on US soil), they go through our civilian criminal justice system.
Either way, they do get medical treatment if required.

You would be correct. The term is unlawful combatants and the Geneva Conventions were designed to take civilians out of the equation during war but at the cost that those civilians stay on the sidelines. Notably though, I don't believe Japan, North Korea, nor N. Vietnam ever got around to signing the Geneva Conventions when we fought them. Germany was a signatory as was Italy.

You can argue all day long about moral equivalence, and that's fine to do from thousands of miles away.
But using the word "murder" to describe what may or may not be happening to enemy combatants on the battlefield (which is essentially all of Israel and Gaza right now) is an egregious misuse of the term.

You're aware, I trust, that during WWII captured SS members were routinely shot on the battlefield, as were captured Japanese soldiers generally speaking. The Marines had seen how captured Americans were treated, and knowing how fanatic the Japs were, generally did not bother trying to take prisoners. Movies that depicted wounded Japanese soldiers playing possum and then gunning down Marines from behind were bullshit, according to my father, who said that the Marines routinely emptied a magazine into any such they found.

There were attempts to claim that Britain's blockade of Europe in WWI unjustly punished German and Austrian civilians. Then the Germans used Zeppelins and bombers to raid Britain in WWI and were the first to use poison gas.
Siege war rules came about during the middle ages more or less--if soldiers in a town resist and fight back using that city as a base, then they are all collectively a target. Only if the armed folks surrender were the civilians safe. Cromwell blackened his name forever in Ireland and elsewhere by losing control of his troops after a town (Wexford) surrendered and Cromwell's army ran amuck afterwards. The second town (Drongheda) situation in Ireland was a bit more murky but had civilians in the town surrendering while Royalist troops in a citadel did not.
