Survivor of Leftwing Extremist Violence Steve Scalise Wins Republican Conference Vote for Speaker; Now His Name Goes to the Full House

Chuck Callesto
@ChuckCallesto

BREAKING NOW: Steve Scalise wins GOP conference ballot to become the next Speaker of the House...

It's possible that some Republicans won't vote him, forcing the conference to vote for another candidate, but given the perilous situation, I think there will be a unanimous vote in favor.

Is this good? I dunno, I heard he was a moderate.

21 Moderate compared to what? Compared to Gaetz, yes. Compared to McCarthy, no. He is on the conservative side of the caucus. He is also not a publicity hound, he has always preferred doing his work quietly. Other than being shot, he has a track record of success.

Look at it this way, given the rules, no sane person would take this job. He is willing to do it. It is probably a one year gig, he has cancer. 34 Gah, willowed:

Whether or not Scalise has better motives than McCarthy seems irrelevant. Scalise at least has the example that there are people like Gaetz in a position to knock him down if he promises but doesn't deliver, and that the dems won't save him because of "muh collegiality" or whatever. That means there's a chance he'll be more inclined to actually deliver for us, out of his own self interest. Is that a huge chance? Eh, probably not, but it's not nothing.

What rules? The rules that were in place for decades before Pelosi reversed them? The condition that, because they have a tiny majority (partly McCarthy's doing, when he and McDaniel ran McConnell's playbook and deliberately kneecapped GOP candidates in various races by withdrawing funding and support, so as to achieve that tiny minority in the hopes of increasing his own grip), the Speaker *will* be held accountable to a minority within that party?

These aren't new rules. These are the old rules.

70 Here's an example of McCarthy intentionally undermining Republican efforts in the house in 2022:

NH-1

McCarthy supported Matt Mowers. Trump supported Karoline Leavitt. Leavitt won the primary.

Leavitt received $10,000 total from the Congressional Leadership Fund. She raised no money from national Republican-aligned Super PACs. Her opponent, Chris Pappas, raised at least $200,000 from national Democrat-aligned Super PACs.

McCarthy simply cut her off, and she lost.

But no, McCarthy definitely did not undermine efforts in the House to gain a Republican majority.

McCarthy did spend in 2022. He spent almost $2 million...in the primary.

He thought it was important enough to try to win the primary, but when he lost the primary he just pulled stakes and left the Republican winner to waste away.

The important thing to learn about how Democrats and Republicans treat their nominees is that Democrats treat their embarrassments as regular nominees (think Fetterman) while Republicans treat their inconveniences as disgusting trash that should be ignored and cast out.

Kabuki is alien to me and I find it off-putting and weird, but I can see how it is very, very precise and how careful the execution is and the amount of skill, practice and dedication it takes. Like any art form, it has much history and many rules and its practitioners - at least, the ones who do it professionally - take it extremely seriously and hone their craft for a very long time.

So far it looks like Hezbollah is doing the absolute bare minimum required to convince their Iranian Paymasters that they're still in on this thing. But they haven't made any serious commitment to anything, and with Israel on full military alert its arguably already too late for them to do so. They have a lot of missiles they could still shoot off; but that's about it and I don't believe they want to throw them all away for nothing.

With a majority of 10, the number of recalcitrant Republicans did not have to be very large to do this.

but 1, Republicans are responsible for that for not actually voting on the 12 appropriatins bills, and 2, I expect this to continue, with one speaker after another pushing through an omnibus, being voted out, and then the next one doing the same thing.

If Republicans want to govern in regular order they actually have to govern in regular order. But the votes are too hard for them and they WANT the speaker to take the responsibility away from them to say "There was nothing I could do."

There's a finite amount of money available. Each dollar spent on one candidate is a dollar that can't be spent on another. There were a lot of Republicans who won House races by very narrow margins that did have support from national committees. Increasing spending on Leavitt would have necessarily meant underfunding them, which would decrease the chances they'd win just for a probability to slightly reduce Leavitt's massive losing margin.

Basically, McCarthy was wise enough not to throw good money after bad. Fetterman's not a good candidate, but he was good enough to defeat the Trump slate. Maybe Trump should try endorsing good candidates?

he did establish, sort of, that if you don't return to regular order your speakership will be a brief one.

but 1, Republicans are responsible for that for not actually voting on the 12 appropriatins bills, and 2, I expect this to continue, with one speaker after another pushing through an omnibus, being voted out, and then the next one doing the same thing.

If Republicans want to govern in regular order they actually have to govern in regular order. But the votes are too hard for them and they WANT the speaker to take the responsibility away from them to say "There was nothing I could do."

The heads of the committees have to be sacked the next time they fail to produce appropriations bills. You can't just keep blaming the speaker.

I don't give a flying crap whether you think the vote was "genuine" or not. I care about results; if you can't deliver, GTFO.

Is this the plan for 2024? Just lose, then whine, "It's not fair! It's not fair! The vote was rigged!"

If you don't care or think about why candidates win or lose, why on earth would you have an opinion about what would be a good play? You're literally in no position to comment on races or how to win them.

I'd rather the plan be the people of PA show up to Philly, at least 100,000 strong and fully armed, to help count ballots.

But that's not going to happen. Philly is going to count until they get the results they want, no matter the candidates.

So, if you want the election to be genuine, I'd expect a progress report on how things have gotten more secure in PA. Any news?

What?? Oz wasn’t my favorite but he was a skilled doctor and had the advantage of being famous (name recognition) and he could actually speak intelligently…. Whereas Fetterman literally could process language and looks like Lurch…. But Oz wasn’t perfect enough to overcome that high quality Fetterneck?? Interesting perspective: Dems can run drooling fools and win but Republicans need 1984 Reagan to win…

It doesn't.

But neither does a McCarthy rich in "political capital" because he didn't do the job. He failed to deliver. He's the one who recessed the House as the deadline was approaching. He's the one who failed to whip his committee heads into action. He didn't do the job. Whether he couldn't do it (incompetence) or didn't want to (malfeasance), he failed. That is on him, and he's gone and good riddance to him.

I don't disagree. It's all theater.

However, as long as the theater is still operational we might as well pretend to look like we know what the fuck we're doing.

The truth is that 1) the vast, vast majority of congressturds are lazy as the day is long. They work 2.5 day weeks and spend the rest of their time fundraising and gladhanding. With their schedule and time commitments and the amount of real, actual work they're willing to put in, there is basically zero chance of reporting a major spending bill out of committee. 2) none of them want to put their names on specific spending bills that can be used against them in campaigns. It's much much easier to just say "well i voted/didn't vote for the omnibus because xxxxx" and there is too much shit in it to dig through and point to anything specifically.

Trump is delusional about the scale of the cheat. I don't think Trump has any plan to fix it.

I really don't understand why people revert to Trump hate when I ask about what's gotten better in these states. At no point do I say that Trump has a plan. He doesn't. He's going to lose them in 2024 because he doesn't have a plan.

What I want to know is: Who does have a plan? If Trump doesn't, surely someone else does, right? Who is it? What is it? What positive action is happening? I can point to a couple of smallish things in WI and AZ, but that's about it. The people that broke the rules are all still in place, often in higher positions of power, and they have every incentive to do it all again.

376 Hmmmm . . . I'm reading they did a secret ballot to nominate a speaker, but they set the threshold at a majority of their conference. Scalise prevailed over Jordan 113-99. But they plan to take the vote on the floor next, but there you need 217.

Jordan supporters are already saying they will only vote for Jordan, meaning we're probably gonna see a replay of McCarthy V1, which they tried to avoid with the secret ballot.

380 We don't accredit everything to fraud. Detailed analyses have been done and presented to the point it is tiresome.

You're just huffing copium by claiming problematic areas can be won with a "better candidate".

Fraud is real, it has a material impact on elections, and if it's not going to be resolved for the next cycle, the smart thing to do is to write off that election and focus on actually winnable areas.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at October 11, 2023 02:13 PM (eYoxG)

Does your detailed analyses include information why Joe Lombardo and Glenn Youngkin could win in states like Nevada and Virginia?

If nominating better candidates won't help, is it the case that nominating worse candidates in those elections wouldn't have hurt?

If we had nominated some Kari Lake/Doug Mastriano type candidate in those races, they would have lost, and you would have claimed it was the result of fraud and shot down the notion that maybe we should haven nominated someone better.

Virginia isn't a problem state. The issues pertain to urban machines in particular areas that are blowing out the usual margin of fraud. Paying them off for that matter is fairly expensive and Ds don't go all out every day for every candidate. The fact that you believe this is relevant at all means you're entirely unfamiliar with the issue.

Nothing, it seems looking at the numbers.

But McCarthy runs an organization that has the explicit mission of trying to win House races that he spent $2 million on in the primary and then $10,000 in the general.

The point is that the GOPe treats unwanted candidates like scum, which obviously has an effect on more moderate members of the voting party, turning them off. If the GOPe treated these people like normal, they'd win more races.

As for the election being stolen:

I've mentioned this, but a friend went to a less-than-1%-margin state with other lawyers and told Trump they could mount a proper legal contest in that state for the cost of $200,000 to $300,000, and Trump said "NO," and just went with the manual recount, which changed nothing (as you would expect) but didn't cost any money.

So, either Trump did not believe there was any fraud there to make spending $300,000 worth it to him, OR he did believe there was fraud there, but decided he'd rather keep his $300,000 than win an election.

You choose.

Yesterday, the North Carolina General Assembly overruled two gubernatorial vetoes trying to block election reforms.

Senate Bill 747 and Senate Bill 749 are now law.

Here are Senate Bill 747's Improvements. I especially approve of sending Zuckerbucks into the wastebasket of North Carolina history:

=> * Prohibits private, non-governmental funding (including in-kind donations) of election activities (e.g., "Zuckerbucks").

*Retention of election records for 22 months to comply with the NVRA.

*Provides clarifications to authority and restrictions for poll observers.

* Same-day registrant addresses are checked and returned mailings will trigger retrieval of voted regular ballots.

* Extends absentee ballot challenge period to five days after election day.

* Polls will close at 7:30PM on election day and all absentee/mail-in ballots must be received by that time.

* Makes it a misdemeanor crime for anyone other than a Board of Elections to affix a tracking code to absentee ballot request forms.

* Provides a new process for removing non-citizens from voter lists.

* Implements a pilot test for signature verification on mail-in ballot envelopes.

442 432 Sub-literate thinking. Really? Are you truly that clueless to post something like that? All a Speaker has is the power to rule his own caucus. Without that power to intimidate and reward Republican allies, together with handing the sword of Speaker vacancy to his political opponents, his options were limited. Gaetz used that sword with the knowledge that the Dems would abandon decades of congressional tradition and to double-cross the Speaker. 462 Here's the algorithm:

The GOPe tells Trump, CORRECTLY, that he is an unpopular figure and that in most jurisdictions and almost all states GOPers run AHEAD of him in voting, and would be brought down by association with him. And that endlessly whining about election fraud is a turn off for most voters.

Trump says "Fuck you, I'm going to push only the candidates who kiss my ass the deepest and wettest and talk endlessly about the 'stolen' 2020 election."

Trump's candidates win, and then the GOPe, *which has only limited resources and must make hard calls about where to spend those resources,* cut Trump's loser candidates off.

Trump also refuses to spend a dime on them.

They then lose, as everyone predicted, and Trump and his most passionate stalwarts all say: "They did it on purpose! They stopped our great candidate from winning!"

And if you ask "what is the plan for Trump in the 2024 general election," THIS IS THE PLAN. They are saddling us with another loser candidate and then when he loses, as everyone told them he would, they will say "you stopped our great candidate from winning."

Enough. How many cycles of this do we need?

497 The GOP won the popular vote by a historically healthy margin in 2022. They did worse in Congress than in years where they've lost the popular vote.

This is not an Orangemanbad problem.

The GOP has several structural issues, including fraud, that puts it in a bad spot. Blaming it on Orangemanbad does nothing to fix those issues.

But at the end of the day, after nominating 3 justices, Roe was struck down. Trump deserves a lot of credit for that. The movement will continue, but it will be a different fight for now. We will have to learn what strategy works best in a post-Roe world. Too soon for me to tell if Trump is the right guy for it or not. But I will give him credit for Roe being overturned.

You intentionally misunderstand me.

Democrats win more on average, not all the time, because they treat their candidates like normal candidates all the time. Republicans are much more willing to cut their recalcitrant candidate lose without a dime, leading to self-fulfilling prophecies of lost races, especially as the leadership and local bodies end up bad mouthing the candidates.

That's gatekeeping which led to a weakened House majority. If Republicans would treat their primary loses with more grace and try to win more, they'd win more.

Stop expecting policy changes, spending changes, etc. Sure, maybe half a loaf, take what you can get.

Oversight is currently the strongest thing they have.
Comer is doing the work.

For spending to be cut, it has to be entitlements. That will not happen until a crisis occurs. See NZ and canada.

There's a reason Trump ignored spending.

So, I think the best way is to put up a token resistance where you state why its a problem, but eventually give in before government shutdowns happen, so that in 1-3 years when we really do have to fix our finances people remember your party as the ones that tried.

Its tricky. The dems have the media so they control what most people know and hear. And the voters seem to love high spending and low taxes. I mean, yes, if its not me paying the bill!

And right now the single most important political issue is Joe Biden's corruption. Stick with that story.

You reject the concept of calculating and adjusting for fraud. Some states should be written off due to the fraud that can be conducted there, others shouldn't (for the Presidential race). We can see what methods they use, different ones are more limited than others. We can consequently kind of math things out. Though a state where they're more active is harder to nail down.

For example, Michigan is a write-off, Wisconsin might be doable.

But big picture, the GOP is not positioned to win the Presidency in 2024.

As I've said like a thousand times now - we have had tons of state level "conservatives", who at the state level seemed like the real deal - run for federal office and immediately turn into GOPe members.

Maybe DeSantis will be the exception to the rule. History is not on his side though. And look at who he is surrounding himself with and his positions. He's already softening his positions. By the general election, he'll be no different than W. If elected, he'll be the second coming of W.

In other words, he is not the savior you believe he is. Neither is Trump. But I know Trump will disrupt the system and will fight for the things I want fought for. I have no faith DeSantis will even try to fight for any of those things. And, again, history backs me up on my lack of faith in DeSantis.

If DeSantis is the nominee, I'll probably vote for him in the general - with little hope. That's better than any other GOP candidate who I won't bother voting for.

the fact that DeSantis can't seem to gain traction should actually give you more pause than Trump's negatives do. DeSantis is running in friendly terrain (republican primary) and can't make a dent. Yet you think he'll win in the general election?

"Your willingness to pretend the GOP is anything but part of the uni-party is duly noted and accounted for. Nothing you say from this point on has merit. You are blind and willingly so. "

My point is that there's this wailing and gnashing of teeth about the "uniparty" and "GOPe"...and the exact same people act like Trump is better than that or above it.

Why? What's the evidence that he's the "real" opposition to the left, as opposed to the GOP's "pretend" opposition? Trump was less willing to confront the left, less willing to effect change, and all around less valuable than an average Republican.

"But he talks a good game on social media!"

Do I have to explain what that doesn't matter?

"Look - I'd rather lose with Trump than win with the GOPe."

And you've been getting your wish. The Trump experience isn't a few losses or even a sequence of losses. It's one continuous stream of losing. Trump loses so often and so badly that you'd have to enjoy it to tolerate being a part of it.

552 LOL and Gaetz "won" because Gaetz had the help of the Dems.
Posted by: mrp at October 11, 2023 01:56 PM (rj6Yv)

Are you a fucking RETARD ? Stop repeating this media / RINO talking point. The democrats did not help Gaetz. McCarthy expected them to bail him out and they "betrayed" him. The one who expected the "help of Dems" was McCarthy the RINO. I don't know if Gaetz thought it was more of a doomed hail mary or if he expected the Democrat scorpions to do exactly what they do.

Either way, you're clearly an idiot

Posted by: deadrody at October 11, 2023 04:55 PM (SKRBr)

553 243 None of them would have won. Better to use what power you have to negotiate deals with the next Speaker. Let's see what gets negotiated.
Posted by: SH (no more socks) at October 11, 2023 01:56 PM (sX1BW)

So you're saying that for Gaetz to get his pick for Speaker, he's got to make a deal with the Dem caucus. LOL

Wow, so you really have no idea how this works, huh ? The rules are already set because they're decided at the beginning of the session, IE back in January. Right now there is still a one vote for motion to vacate. If the new speaker wants to change that, they have to make concessions to the people that wanted it, IE the freedom caucus. Otherwise, the rules stay exactly as they are and if Scalise is no better, he'll face the exact same motion.

What is it you think they do in the divided government with a tiny minority in the House, exactly ? They're not doing anything ground breaking because The Senate is 50-50 and if it doesn't suit the senile dipshit in the White House, it would get veto-ed.

554 289 Nothing will happen on the Biden impeachment inquirty until we have a new Speaker. Now, those folks who think that a paralyzed House of Representatives is a good thing while the Biden regime runs roughshod over the country might just need to figure out how things really work.
Posted by: mrp at October 11, 2023 02:04 PM (rj6Yv)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And you think this SOOPER important impeachment inquiry is going to.... what ? Move a single vote ? Get the leftist media to turn on Biden ? You're out of your mind.
Yeah, Democrats are "tear up the Constitution". And you think the House is going to..... ??? WHAT ? Pass a very sternly worded letter about it ? Reach across the aisle (it is to laugh) and get Democrats to vote with them to reign it in ?
I mean, seriously, do you really think the House is going to pass an immigration bill that is going to force deportations and build the border wall and its going... ANYWHERE ?
For fuck sakes, try living on the actual planet earth for a minute.
555 We need someone who is actually capable of FOCUSING and doing homework and putting in the hours to get his agenda carried out by an obviously-opposed bureaucracy. Not a guy who thinks posting a tweet and insulting people at a rally means MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Posted by: ace at October 11, 2023 02:44 PM (KRtlO)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And just who the hell do you think that is ? Mr. 7% Ron DeSantis ???

Maybe - just maybe - if the Republican party wasn't a fucking JOKE, they'd support the guy who can get elected with someone to serve WITH HIM that can do this homework. I mean are you under the impression that Trump is even capable of doing this level of "hOmEWorK" ? He IS NOT A POLITICIAN. Or did you forget this ?

I get the point of what you're saying, but its navel gazing idiocy at this point. You're on the same train as mrp, pushing for someone to run things in a world that doesn't exist.
