Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Note: The latest war thread is being moved up just under this one during primetime, so we can keep this thread about our animal kingdom friends.

Surrealist topiary:

An artist who lost his cat immortalizes its image in green plants.

In February 2016, artist Richard Saunder's cat Tolly, Russian blue breed, died. And soon Saunders created a bush resembling a sleeping cat. . .

Question from Alan:

What's your dog's favorite toy? My GSD likes his big rope, Kong ball, and various chunks of wood.

So, how do you tell which toy is your dog's favorite?

Hi K.T., thanks for all you do on the pet thread. Long time lurker here. My two beautiful kittens have been featured on the thread before but we moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and I thought the horde might appreciate an update.

First up, here is my blue-eyed boy Frankie, aka Frankie Butterbean, aka Frank the Tank, aka Frank and Beans, aka Mr. Whiskers. He's the sweetest fella in the world.

Then see Frankie's sister, Her Royal Highness, First of her Name, Lady Jane Peekaboo Von Smudgecake. She's a smoldering chanteuse who does not suffer fools lightly. She goes by Peekaboo.

Great cats! Look like they belong together.

Sorry I missed Lady Jane's names at first. She certainly has a lot of names! So does her brother!

Hello,

Thank you for hosting the world famous pet thread.
These 3 pups are the latest addition to my little zoo. They just turned 4 months old. Their main focus right now is puppy wrestling, with raiding the cat box a strong second.

In the front is Lalita, head of troublemaking, and the largest of the 3 by alot.
In the middle is Poncho, who looks exactly like his mother.

In the rear is Sadie, she hasn't caught up to her ear size yet.
They are great watchdogs who make up for their small size with exuberant barking!

I'm nicless and a longtime lurker out west in CommieFornia.

They really do look like friends -- 3 amigos!

13 Always happy to see Moron pets!

Jake hates me working the new job. He fusses when I'm on the computer. Am trying to spend more time off it on the weekend but get sucked into work.

Had a discussion with Mr Trouble today about the benefits of life indoors. Dropped close to freezing last night. Took Jake out at 3 and Troubles ran up to me but wouldn't come in. Went back to bed and fed him when I got up at 8. He spent a happy 20 minutes on my lap getting warm and petted. I need to set up some warmer places for him outside too.

14 Before I take off.

A friend's son was killed at 8 years old in the February Earthquake in now-Turkey-Turkiye-etc. He was their only child and son and they are devastated. So I send, to his wife, the mother, ridiculous videos and photos of my cat and the other recently adopted cat and it's a huge help. She tells me she laughs and finds my awful cats the best therapy.

I will get around to sending photos of them.

21 Jake's favorite is a big 2' long fake fur bone with a giant squeaker. I also got him a Kong bear, which has a rope inside the body. He's tearing it up but really seems to like it. There are dog toys everywhere right now.

22 I adopted a rescue cat for my little black tom who was moping after the other tom died. They aren't besties yet, but they are tolerating each other.
My little tom is 14 and still punching along, but it is amazing how much energy a two year old cat has.

Poor thing had been "returned" twice to the humane society and I have no idea why.
I suspect he never was cut out to be an apartment cat. The first day I let him out unsupervised it was pouring down rain: he ran out delightedly into the yard and came back a half hour later, soaked and covered with burrs and complained.
That is how he spent the rest of the day, running out to get soaked, and coming back in to rest up for a half hour or so.
He was chubby too, and is now losing weight because he has something to do other than eat. He is still not a lean pantherine menace in the tall weeds, but he is happier.

Posted by: Kindltot at October 07, 2023 03:57 PM (xhaym)

23 He thinks he is the biggest, baddest outdoor cat in the neighborhood. Vet thinks he is a year old. Used to see him come in the yard and would say, " Here comes Trouble", which turned into Mr Trouble.

24 Another nice pet thread! Glad Daisy Dog roused me from a nap in time. Again. Always so good to see, but especially appreciated today. Not to get into it, but as I was walking Daisy this morning at sunrise, besides all the other horror, the pets caught up in the war came to mind. I'll just leave it at that. 💔😿

Gotta go to town now, though, so I will miss the comment chat, but I'll catch up reading when we get back. May have to save our own pet report for next week.

32 Howdy, everybody! Handsome beasts today. Stirling and Dagny's favorite toy is a small fabric mouse, just the size of the real thing, wrapped in green cord. It rattles as well. I throw it, and Dagny races after it, seizes it in her jaws, and trots back to drop it near me. Stirling savages it when she gives him a chance. It may once have had catnip in it too.

The trouble is, it slides easily under furniture and closet doors, and they lose it until I find it again. Right now it's lost. I've bought a new set of similar but not identical mice. We'll see if the cats like these.

33 We now have 3 outside cats that adopted us. First Mr Gray, who came here at least a couple of years ago and eventually allowed himself to be petted, etc. Then one day he appeared with a tailing grey female and she stayed here permanently. I think she's been fixed as she never got pregnant. Also friendly. She likes the rosebush so we named her Rose. Very lately a calico female arrived (with Mr Gray?) and she also stayed. Still skittish but getting used to my daughter, the one who feeds her. We think she's pregnant, bad timing with winter coming, but we do have a crawlspace that is a shelter and warmer than outside. Just have to worry about raccoons and possums. We'll see. I think all 3 have had their picture on Ciampino's Kitties.

36 Anybody have a recommendation for a larger litter box with a *lip* on it? I used to have a smaller one for a single cat, a plastic Walmart-type box with a snap-on rim that kept the particular feline from kicking litter onto the bathroom floor so easily. None of the ones I see at WM or Target, or at the big-box pet stores, have a lip. You can get ones with the covers that turn the box into a tiny house, but not the lip thing. Anybody know where I could find one? 'Net searches have failed me.

37 This actually, okay I read a bit earlier this week that really hit. My Man Card is the book Marine At War by Russell Davis. It is my manual of how to be a man. It did serve me well as a moral manual in actual warfare. Directed a lot of my behavior. As a young boy it told me not to commit atrocities.
And later, I did not.

I read another perspective on the exact same Peleliu Campaign that was unknown, only unearthed in 2004. Some handwritten notes. The narrator is talking to some other dude and the guy looks at his feet and asks, "What's your shoe size?"
Sizing him up, so he can have his boots.

Sounds like our horney-puker. We went to the Humane Society to pick up a kitten. While older child was sitting in a chair in the room with the cats, this black cat comes out of a cubby hole and sits on his lap, wanted to be pet. Staff there were surprised, said he'd been there a week, and other than eat and poop, he spent his time hiding. He picked my kid, not the other way around. Ended up with him and a kitten.

46 Tomorrow is Precious' 15th birthday, at least as far as the animal shelter could tell us. We're taking it as official. She doesn't care about chew toys or stuffed toys so she will get an extra walk as a B'day gift. She may be partly deaf (I suspect she only hears what she wants to) but she knows what the leash means: WALKIES!!!! Her tail wags, she makes little excited yips, and carefully positions herself so it can be attached quickly. She PRANCES more than walks.

It's pretty damn adorable. For a short time she is a puppy again.

48 A long time ago, Arizona the big red tabby and Maine Coon lookalike seized on the then Mrs. Wolfus No. 2's little stuffed Pegasus she'd had since her girlhood. He didn't tear it apart, but would seize it in his jaws, carry it like a dead rat, and then wrestle with it and gnaw on it. Mrs. W. gave up on trying to keep it away from him. Throughout his life, AZ would still play with it -- though as he got more "grown up," if I caught him wrestling with it, he'd knock off and stalk away as if annoyed to be caught acting like a kitten.

AZ passed away in 1999, and no cat since has wanted anything to do with it. Yet I still have the darn thing atop a bookcase.

Ha! That is my girl Luna, totally, every day.

As for favorite toys, she varies from day to day but her all-time favorite is a plush wood duck that has no stuffing except for a couple of squeakers. She's on her third one and each time I have stitched up torn seams and replaced punctured squeakers until I just couldn't rehab it anymore.

Yes they do! All mammals dream and there is no established limit on how far down it goes. The cat The Kid insisted on adopting cried and screamed in her sleep for over a year. Twitched, yelled, shook, just horrible. I just let her do it. But she screamed in her sleep for over a year. Moaning and shouting, it was loud. We called it 'The Urking'. She would just groan, it was awful.
I have footage, so does The Kid. She had nightmares for over a year.

70 67 In the adoption paper I knew SK (her) had been pregnant when brought into the shelter and they aborted her babies when they fixed her.

It's a cat, but...

My vet will not fix a female cat (and probably dog too) if it's pregnant. In fact he does an ultrasound first thing. I assumed it was because it's probably not good on the mother but maybe I'm wrong and the vet has scruples?

71 DD#1's female dog has a LambChop toy that she humps every night. It is the funniest thing to watch. She is a beast - she is on her 2nd or 3rd one at this point.

Shari Lewis would be appalled.....

72 Wow, I like cats but that topiary bush, wow...
Combined pet and garden thread!
I love the cats up top, very unusual markings.
Also the dogs on their "chargers", LOL

73 Also I like dried squid. The Old Cat does not, but fights to get bits of cheddar cheese of anything I am eating that involves cheddar cheese.

There are so many issues around me I don't much care. Someone brought a cat in and there are flatly too many cats. SK is lucky to be alive. If she is sad, which she is, then she has found a good home.

77 Little Dagny has come out and is scratching on her rope post. This is a fairly tall unit I bought at one of the stores years and years ago, and have refurbished 3-4 times with rope and hammer-in staples from the hardware store. Once I've rewrapped the post, I rub my hands all over it, so it smells like me, and sprinkle catnip all over it.

It's getting to be time to do it over again.

78 SK needs to get over herself.
She's a good hunter, she kills stuff. That's what cats are for in my house. She's also gotten over her Big Trauma and is getting funny, which is a big part of why anyone has animals around don't lie.

Yes, she got cut up and hurt and traumatized. Well, this makes you special... HOW? Sleep on the bed.

79 I use Nature's Miracle litter boxes. They are made from recycled paper pulp and when they have a couple months of use I replace them.
If you have adult cats be sure to get the large ones.

I saw those at Petco. How much are they?

The big hard plastic one I have now works fine; it's just that the cats kick litter out onto the bathroom floor. Hard to imagine there are no units out there with a snap-on rim.

83 Mr Trouble goes under the house when it's hot or stormy. He has taken to walking around the yard like he owns the place. I first saw him across the street in February with snow and negative temps, fugured he was someone's cat. He won't need to dio that this winter.

They seem to have two with "scatter shields," which look like those plastic Coof-shield things cashiers had everywhere two or three years ago. That might work.

(The CVS pharmacy where I pick up my BP meds, inside a Target, has finally removed the silly plastic shields in front of the register.)

86 So what comes after the Pet Thread ?

Posted by: JT at October 07, 2023 05:24 PM (T4tVD)

87 Thanks, K.T.

Running between cleaning, laundry, the occasional war briefing on tv & knew it was past time to stop to enjoy the Pet Thread.

I'm loving the thread - the pictures and stories - on my cellphone & then realize my dog is sitting & glaring at me from beyond. She's old & dinner must be exactly 4:45 pm. She's been fed but is not forgiving this afternoon. To a back room & her cage she's retired awhile.

I'll entice her back later with her leather chew rabbit & a cookie.

89 Awww. Lovely moranimals.
My Reina, chubby orange tabby, has at last taken to sleeping by my feet. And our boy kitty has calmed down immensely, seemingly recovered from the extreme skittishness he exhibited after we acquired both cats when they were 10 months old.
Cheers to all!

90 I've spent a lot of time in life detesting cats. . .for a host of verifiable reasons. . . . . but for some reason, when I come into the world of the Pet Thread they seem to find a way to pull on my heart (maybe even if only a little little bit). Or should I say put a hook in me . . . . . or should I say put a claw in me??
