Supposedly -- Wink -- Disney Will Be Walking Back from the Brink In Its Unending Culture War on Its Former Customers

I do not believe this, not for one second.

I can believe that the Woke Warrior Bob Iger is taking a page from Black Rock head Larry Fink -- he will stop using the terms "ESG" and "DEI" to appease a public which has grown to despise the acronyms, while continuing to invest in firms pushing a woke agenda.

And that's basically what Iger is saying here -- he's saying he's trying to "quiet the noise" and controversy around Disney.

That is not the same thing as abandoning the policies and propaganda that have made Disney controversial.

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger told investors the company will "quiet the noise" in a culture war that has pitted social conservatives against the global media and entertainment conglomerate, according to an analyst note on Wednesday.

Iger's brief statement, included in an analyst report from Needham media analyst Laura Martin, was part of an investors' presentation on Tuesday at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, in which the CEO also announced Disney will double its investment in theme parks and cruise ships over the next decade.

Disney is struggling to make its streaming business profitable, improve the quality of its films, position its flagship sports brand, ESPN, to stream directly to consumers, and potentially shed its television networks. In its most recent quarter, the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations but fell short on revenue.

Disney declined comment.

In other words, when reporters called to ask what Iger meant, he refused to say, because he doesn't mean anything. He just wants conservatives to stop boycotting him, but he doesn't want to give in to any of their demands. He wants to continue pushing woke propaganda and grooming children; he just doesn't want conservatives to punish Disney economically for that.

But he'll keep doing it. Just more "quietly."

Is the Man in a Beard and a Dress still greeting confused little girls outside the Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique? You say he is?

Then shut the fuck up, Iger, you revolting c**t.

Sexton points out that with Disney planning to spend billions more on theme parks, that means they will not be following through on the threat to leave DeSantis' Florida.

Meanwhile, Forbes got hold of the UK tax filings for The Marvels, which was formerly called Captain Marvel 2 but then they realized everyone hates Captain Marvel.

A better name would be Captain Marvel Now with 66% Less Captain Marvel. I might actually see that.

In April, Forbes reported that The Marvels cost $130 million just in its first two months of filming.

Disney has revealed that the cost of making its upcoming superhero team-up movie The Marvels hit $130 million after just two months of filming....

The Marvels appears to be a slapstick sci-fi firmly-focused on the youth audience as the trailer shows the trio of stars changing places involuntarily. It is the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel which grossed $1.1 billion at the box office so Disney is sparing no expense.

LOL. Captain Marvel made money because Marvel lied and told people that it was critical for understanding Avengers: Endgame. If Marvel had said that shirtless pictures of David French were required viewing for Endgame, they would have sold $1 billion worth of candid snaps of David French's sadly puffy nipples.

Now Forbes reports that the cost for the film has ballooned to $270 million.

And that's just what Disney is willing to admit.

Disney has revealed that it spent more than $270 million on making The Marvels, the latest instalment in its Marvel Comics super hero saga, which will be released in theaters in November.

The blockbuster budget is disclosed in company filings released yesterday by the Disney subsidiary which made the movie.

They show that over the two-year period from the incorporation of the company to September 30, 2022, it spent $274.8 million (£221.8 million) and banked a $55 million (£44.4 million) subsidy from the government of the United Kingdom where the movie was made. This brought its net spending down to $219.8 million meaning that the movie will have to gross at least $439.6 million at the box office to break even as studios get around half of theater takings.

...

Trailers for the Marvel movie show that it is a slapstick sci-fi as the trio of stars change places involuntarily whenever they use their powers. On paper, it looks like a sure-fire hit as the film is the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel which grossed $1.1 billion at the box office.

Oh yeah, it looks like a huge hit. The average Marvel fan, a dude between 18 and 60 years old, is totally into a Freaky Friday parody of a superhero films crammed with Disney XD children's humor.

They got this information from the UK tax filings. The production was organized by a corporation calling itself "Warbird."

I wondered why the UK tax filings would include the budget spent outside of the UK. After all, if you're just getting a tax credit for the amount of money spent in the UK, why would you report the expenditures in America or Canada?

The article answers this question: To get UK tax credits, you have to spend at least 10% of the total budget of the film in the UK. So to establish that, you have to report both your UK costs and the total budget of the film.

Gary Beuchler from Nerdrotic was laughing yesterday about an interview with the director of this latest Marvel disaster-in-the-making, in which she clearly distances herself from the project, stressing that she was not allowed to make her movie and that this is really Kevin Fiege's movie.

In other words: Don't blame me for this piece of shit. My career should not be damaged by what we're about to shit out on to the public.

Turns out, when you direct an MCU film, you're still second-in-command to Kevin Feige. The Marvels director Nia DaCosta recently opened up about this in an interview.

Speaking to Vanity Fair for their cover story, DaCosta revealed what working in the MCU is like. She said that The Marvels is "a Kevin Feige production, it's his movie."

LOL.

"The Marvels? What's that? Oh right, I showed up a few days to watch them filming it. Kevin Feige should be so proud! He tries so hard, despite everything!"

She continued, "So I think you live in that reality, but I tried to go in with the knowledge that some of you is going to take a back seat."

That's not humility, that's survival instinct kicking in.

I don't think this is the right take, Ace. There isn't a "conservative boycott" of Disney. There was no event that lead to a reaction, no push for it.

Disney's creepy shit products have just turned off audiences. The framing of this article is that it's about the "conservative culture war" and that is in fact true - after a fashion - but it is not that there was or is some boycott. It's that the product sucks. It has sucked for a long time. Disney keeps stepping on its own dick and pissing off more and more people who keep checking out more and more often.

What we're witnessing with Disney isn't a boycott, it's apathy. It isn't targeted, it's general. It's not like Bud Light, it's just a path of ever growing dislike and, critically, indifference.

That's hard to fix. DIS needs to put out good products and quit stepping on its own cock for *years* - and with product after product for a goodly while - to regain what it has lost.

43 The original Captain Marvel made a lot of money in part because of the lies that it was needed to understand Endgame. I'll probably be banned for saying this, but CM was also pretty good. It was good for reasons having nothing to do with the actual Captain Marvel character or the whiny idiot actress playing her. But the story was decent, it wasn't 3 hours like so many other films, and the supporting cast was very good. Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou, etc.

LOL. Assuming no marketing or distribution costs, sure. But there *will* be marketing and distribution costs. If Disney markets this movie at the very, very low end of what it usually does, it will be an additional $75 million or $100 million. If it's more like a mainline Marvel movie, it will be an additional $150 million or more.

The bead on this for total cost is going to be closer to $320 million, or perhaps as high as $375 million. Using the sloppy back-of-the-envelope math of "needs to double that to break even," it needs to clear somewhere in the neighborhood of $640-$750 million just to break even.

55 ||CNN's Ratings Hit Rock Bottom
Ben Wilson; Free Beacon; September 20, 2023

CNN hit its lowest ratings on record in a key demographic last weekend, the latest sign of trouble at the news organization.

The channel's rating hit a record low over the weekend in the 25- to 54-year-old demographic, earning just 55,000 viewers for its programming. The ratings are the worst since at least 1991, according to Nielsen ratings data reported by the New York Post.

Fox News performed best in the demographic, at 75,000 viewers, while MSNBC pulled the worst total at 47,000. Overall viewership for CNN was 345,000 viewers, far behind Fox News's 683,000 viewers.

The poor ratings come months after the network's former CEO Chris Licht stepped down after receiving internal backlash for his efforts to make the channel less partisan. Several of the network's stars were fired or quit during Licht's tenure, including Don Lemon, Jeffrey Toobin, and Brian Stelter.

Rep. Ken Buck (R., Colo.), a vocal critic of his party's impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, told the New York Post he's seeking employment at the failing news outlet.||

She was just not in charge. It's an old school, Hollywood type of machine where directors are the tools of producers, but the producers need to be good.

Louis B. Mayer was good. Feige doesn't seem to be that good.

Phase 1 and part of Phase 2 were more hands-off from Feige.

Gunn and Waiti seem to be the only ones who've really preserved their more out-there sensibilities though the later changes (for good and ill). The Russo brothers too, probably, but they're kinda generic anyway.

Everyone new since Phase 3 on have been for hire and pawns. Probably the funniest is the woman who directed Black Panther going from a small, WWII indie film about a girl to directing a tentpole action movie with a $300 million budget where the action scenes were mapped out before she was hired.

There's a story that when George Lucas was making Empire Strikes Back (I think) every contractor charged him more than what they did for Star Wars, and ever since then, he used bogus titles and shell companies for as long as he could so he wouldn't get ripped off quite so much.

With the amount of coin a Marvel movie involves, there's probably just gonna be a lot of bloat. Actor's salaries, accommodations, everything.

And yes, waste and fraud too.

Stupidly designed, stupidly named (what does a GC have to do with SW?), cheaply built, the whole thing was such an obvious pile of shit that I can't believe it was built.

A former co-worker and aspiring screenwriter got invited to do some major improv show in San Fran. It rapidly morphed into then having lunch with Apatow.

She was over the moon.

Then the lunch happened and she said all it was was him preaching to about 15 other improv writers about how awesome he was.

Self-indulgent and undisciplined is a good description here. Funny how a movie about a movie being overblown, and going over budget... seems they probably could have trimmed about 30 minutes out of it, and tightened up the ending.

But yeah, it's definitely worth a look.

The problem is the board. The problem is Blackrock and State Street and Vanguard. The problem is we all put our retirement money into these big funds and delegate control of huge corporations to the fund managers.

I'm not sure what the solution is except to burn down companies like Disney as consumers so the fund managers lose their Christmas bonus.

I grew up in the 70s when Disney movies were moribund as well and poor quality, and while the audiences meh-ed and stayed away, there wasn't the same visceral revulsion. Once you lose your reputation you don't just get it back if you say 'never mind'.

And the kicker is that the culture in Disney is so woke they are unable as well as unwilling to fake it and make normal entertainment for kids. And the bloat there must be tremendous to make drek and cheap CGI cost 200, 300, or 400 million to make.

Remember the clips of pretty things at Google drinking wine in the afternoon, doing 1 hour of work, then partying at night with bosses? Disney has to have that and a lot more.

I dont see anything strategic. That's giving them too much credit.

It's just ultra-wealthy liberal executives that care more about what their peers think (and their own hobby horse politics) then they do about creating wealth for their shareholders.

Even if Disney is on a permanent decline, Iger is never going to not be jumping on a private jet and doing whatever the hell he wants.

It's really shareholders that need to reign this in, but all shares are pretty much owned by 3 institutions. Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. And they aren't going to push back.

That's the real problem. If they just ignore what they've done, shut up, quit attacking their own fans and customers and pump out quality products for 5-7 years, it will probably be fine.

But they can't do it. The place is too toxic now. Iger, the Board, the senior execs, all the way down to everyone involved in story groups, etc. - it's all woke now. There needs to be a massive, tremendous personnel shift to make it happen, starting at the top and then ruthlessly enforces the New Rules at all levels.

That won't happen until Iger and the Board, at the very least, are gone. And that isn't going to happen. Iger has picked the entire Board. It's going to take years just to get the necessary turnover.

What sucks is, index investing works. It's just a smart to invest to get market returns with near zero fees. But you unfortunately lose the right to vote. The institution gets that vote and they are largely a rubber stamp.

The only thing that "might" have a chance of making a difference is direct indexing where you are the index fund instead of Vanguard, etc.

problem is, very complex for an average investor to own 500 companies, much less participate in voting in all of these issues.

Eh. That's a series that should not be held up as some sort of sacred cultural totem.

There's some good stuff, but it's so all over the place. Hell, Escape starts with some massive retconning to give Zeera and Cornelius access to reverse time travel because Charlton Heston insisted that Beneath was going to be the last one and end with him dying and the world exploding (awesome ending, by the way).

Conquest is really good, but outright anti-human. Battle is a joke. The new trilogy was really good and effectively prequels with some new lore, and there's a new movie coming out anyway (Kingdom, I think), that this is probably tied to.

220 Bwahahahaha. At Insty:
On Thursday, May 25, Brandon Jackson, a software engineer in Baltimore County, Maryland, discovered that he was locked out of his Amazon account. Jackson couldn’t get packages delivered to his home by the retail giant. He couldn’t access any files and data he had stored with Amazon Web Services, the company’s powerful cloud computing wing. It also meant that Jackson, a self-described home automation enthusiast, could no longer use Alexa for his smart home devices. He could turn on his lights manually, but only in the knowledge that Amazon could still operate them remotely.

Jackson soon discovered that Amazon suspended his account because a Black delivery driver who’d come to his house the previous day had reported hearing racist remarks from his video doorbell. In a brief email sent to Jackson at 3 a.m., the company explained how it unilaterally placed all of his linked devices and services on hold as it commenced an internal investigation.

The accusations baffled Jackson. He and his family are Black.

And they will. That sub growth is what it is. The subscriber numbers are going to shoot up.

But ARPU - "Average Revenue per User" - is going to decline. Anyone who is a Charter customer *and* a D+ customer right now is going to cancel their paid D+ subscription unless they're interested in paying a lot more for ad-free (unless there's a buy-up option within the Charter 'free' subscription). The revenue from those users will fall from $8/month to whatever the negotiated wholesale rate from Charter is (probably close to that $3/month you mentioned).

And that will probably affect hundreds of thousands of customers, and will hit even more when Comcast demands - and gets - at least as good a deal on the next negotiation cycle.

So subs will skyrocket, but ARPU is going to fall dramatically.

Streep did everything she could to rewrite the character into something somewhat sympathetic, and it only goes so far by the end. The first 3/4 of the film, though, she looks kind of like a selfish monster.

It's been decades since I saw that movie, but if IIRC her justification went something like "I felt I was losing myself to be your wife and his mother, and I just couldn't take it so I left."(with lots of BONUS self-pitying tears)

My concluding thought to KvK was, "Ugh. What a silly bitch."

251 No they have another great commie plan. Tear down the multi million never paid back mall and put up 500 units of living quarters for low and very low income people. My initial estimate is about $130 million+ and that doesn't include the additional infrastructure like electric (banned gas), water, and sewer. It will be at a minimum 8 years away and the initial price tag will triple.

You're neglecting the cost of the new police station that will be needed.

I work in the embedded-software department of a hardware company, and we've been unable to fill open positions for like 2 years. The job market is very lopsided; youngsters are getting screwed because big shitty cube farms like Twitbook that are usually someone's first tech job aren't hiring, but the little guys who are hiring are geographically scattered and not really set up to work with a kid who's maybe motivated but doesn't understand the mechanics of the field well enough to set their own priorities.

What tax situation? You have to pay ordinary income tax on 401k withdrawals. So what? You have to pay that on your own also. Estate tax (if any) is paid by the estate, not the beneficiary.

That's like saying "My goal is to pay zero income taxes. To succeed in that goal, I will not earn any income"
