What Is Apple Up To Video of the Day

If you are suspicious about one of the largest and most unscrupulous opponents of device repairability having a sudden change of heart and becoming a stalwart champion of consumers and independent repair shops, you are not half so suspicious as Louis Rossman, who made the mistake of giving Apple the benefit of the doubt once, four years ago, and has been living it down ever since.

It's not a question of whether Apple is attempting to fuck over its own customers, but how.

7 So the right to repair law for cars in MA gives 'reasonable period of time' while the govt says cars have to suspend the laws of physics and get 40 miles per gallon by 2030. How do we give a legislative system a giant does of lithium?

8 At the office (exposed, 'industrial-look aesthetic') the aircon ducting is condensing heavily and dripping water all over the place and onto the pool table. Last time I covered the table with plastic and let management/maintenance know, and they didn't do anything about it so screw it this time.
The table isn't very good.

9 A 1965 movie I've never really heard of called Die, Monster, Die! is on Comet right now. Nick Adams, Boris Karloff, with a script by Jerry "Corbomite Maneuver" Sohl from an H.P. Lovecraft story. Seems intriguing; I wish I could have watched it from the start. And you have to give them props for putting the commas into the title where they belong.

15 Gonna be a long day. Work, then writing group tonight. I plan to attend tonight and the next meeting in two weeks, and then I'm out for a while; I may not even attend. I'm tired of wrangling with Mr. "I 'published' a book so I know all about writing, even though my book is full of editing errors and awkward changes from first person to third." I come home each time grumbling under my breath. It's not worth it any more. It's a shame; I've been attending since 2006 and it's taught me a lot.

Oh, Mister Expert has said he's putting an ad on Craigslist to find a "co-writer" -- someone who can work with him so they can turn out more books. First, good luck finding someone in this benighted town who can string three coherent sentences together. Second, just what kind of vision is this going to produce? More than likely it will be a mess. Third, Craigslist? The home of listings for pig-in-a-poke used cars and crappy apartments?

I love getting scripts reviewed by people who basically do nothing but review scripts, and their suggestions are shit like "take out (what is essentially) the entire focus of the script" or "remove this twist that ties the whole story together"

36 I don't underestimate the Government's ability to screw up this right to repair bill. Everyone wanted it basically just to say "we want to be able to fix our Phones or Computers, or have a 3rd party able to do so" now the government will find a way to destroy business who say, don't allow consumers the right to repair the nuclear power plant in their state that provides them energy.

The guy in that video, Louis Rossmann, is a stand up dude. Years ago, back when he just had his small place in NYC, I called him about a repair on my 1st gen MacBook Pro 17" with the motherboard issue (due to Steve Jobs' mindset of form over function) At the time a lot of shops were doing bogus repairs for $500+ by either heating the gpu with a heat gun or putting it in the oven (something I did for about 2 years to keep my 2 17" MBPs alive) but they would desolder again weeks or months later. Louis played it straight, told me how no one can legitimately fix it, and said as long as doing the heat trick was working, to stick with that until i can buy a something else. He could have made easy money, but chose to be a honest business.

Posted by: Rbastid at August 24, 2023 05:12 AM (yRwlf)

37 No matter what happens with the right to repair bills, Apple will weasel its way around it.

Just like how laws have passed that say all phones need to use the same charging system (USB-C now) so Apple is complying, but apparently putting chips in their phones and chargers that mean you can only use Apple USB-C cables to charge your phone. So while technically they're following the law, they're just doing something that no one thought they'd be scummy enough to do, to get around it. (And cables are a huge business, didn't Apple make billions by no longer shipping chargers with phones?)

38 What kinda shocks me is the obvious deterioration of basic editing in even the most 'prestigious' books and publications anymore. You can pick up any old trashy drugstore paperback from as near back as the 1990s and find nary a misspelling or grammatical error of any kind.

Now? I get academic, high-end stuff and it's riddled with all manner of problems so obvious you'd think a 4th grader would catch them.

56 You know, it is kind of startling to realize how anti-customer so many corporations are now.

Now that is not an idle jest about anti-corporatism, this is not an indictment of 'Late stage capitalism.' It really does seem like there has been a turning point somewhere in the last 20 years from companies at least trying to satisfy customer desires (so they can, I don't know, make money) to actively HATING their customers. In healthy capitalism, this is a two way street on the one hand, the customer takes advantage of the company wanting to attract buyers, and the company wants to attract the money the customer brings. It is a symbiotic type of thing. Both sides look out for their self interest and in turn, help each other.

I could point to fascism, but I do not think that is the only thing at play here.

Back when they first rolled out the vaccine, after reading about it, I likened it to steroids. Where you'd basically be dependent on it for life, as it stopped your body's ability to build its own defense against the flu.

I wouldn't doubt that it also would start mutating, so that your body can't build its natural defenses against pretty much anything.

You were praised Lord,
When you entered Jerusalem
people shouted, "Hosanna", and
strewed your path with palms;
and yet within days
their shouts of praise rang hollow.
Lord, help me to praise God
for all the goodness
That has been shown to me.
I have sung his praises with delight.
Help me, in darker days,
When others mock or deride,
not to be silent,
But continue to be loyal
In love and praise.

157 Milwaukee's crime is very nearly the sole reason WI elected Scott Walker: so he'd pass concealed carry. There was some West Side pizza delivery guy who shot so many people in attempted robberies even the Dem Cities got fed up and put in Walker so people could legally carry guns. The Dem Gov at the time couldn't let it pass because Madison!
So there was a temporary swap so Black delivery people could get CCWs.
Then Walker being a GOPe fucked it all up and WI got rid of him, but...
I wasn't first in the line for a CCW but I have a very low number.

The outlet asserted FEMA officials are living in three five-star establishments: Four Seasons, Fairmont Kea Lani, and the Grand Wailea Astoria. Other FEMA officials are reportedly staying at the four-star Marriott Wailea Beach Resort, which is open to the public starting at $749 per night, though the government is reportedly getting a discounted rate of $531. The Daily Mail even provided pictures of officials at the hotels.

231 California has threatened a Stanford University researcher with a lawsuit and up to $50,000 in fines after he testified on behalf of poor families suing the state over pandemic school closures.

Thomas Dee, who has studied academic outcomes for 11 years at Stanford, submitted testimony last month in support of the families’ claims in a 2020 lawsuit that the state harmed vulnerable children when they shut down classrooms and effectively stalled instruction. Within days, the California Department of Education sent him a letter claiming that because he works with taxpayer-funded data from the agency, he could not criticize the state in court.

I think that's correct. What I wrote in last night's Debate/Interview thread at #1094:

"When asked the large broad-brush question of what he'd do with a second term, he answered along the lines of closing the border, and removing the foreign criminals that came here back to their own countries.

What he didn't say was how he'd do that in any specifics, particularly not when dealing with proven multiple levels of non-elected bureaucracy that are willing to defy, ignore, or at least slow-walk lawful directives from elected members of government."

It should be punishment, not torture. Rape jokes or shiving people as a matter of course is wrong. It may be Pollyanna, but to me it seems like there should be a dividing line and no acceptance of the latter. Prisoners should not be allowed to prey on other prisoners.

Unfortunately, "predator" tends to be their default behavior. If they weren't predators, they probably would not end up in jail. No, they should not be allowed to prey on other inmates, but the only way to prevent it entirely (or at least mostly) is to make every jail a Supermax prison where the inmates have virtually NO contact with anyone outside their individual cells.
