Have we misjudged ChatGPT all along?

GPTrolley is a site where you can ask ChatGPT how it would handle the Trolley Problem. (GPTrolley)

Given only the choice of who gets sliced into ribbons by the oncoming trolley, you can see who ChatGPT would choose. The text of the answer varies between tries, but the choice seems to be pretty consistent.

I will save the cat and kill the bat. Cats are adorable, cuddly, and make great companions. Bats, on the other hand, are creepy, and they fly around in the dark. Plus, I've never seen a cat transform into a superhero like Batman. So, sorry bat, but the cat gets to live.
Fair enough. Walter White vs. Queen Elizabeth II?
I would save Queen Elizabeth II and kill Walter White. Queen Elizabeth II is the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom and has dedicated her life to serving her country. She represents tradition, stability, and the values of a nation. Walter White, on the other hand, is a fictional character from the TV show "Breaking Bad" who becomes a dangerous criminal involved in illegal activities. While Walter's character may be complex and intriguing, Queen Elizabeth II's role as a symbol of national unity and continuity outweighs his fictional existence.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...

Ma, they're doing it again!

I want a small phone with a 1080p screen running stock Linux and also a Ryzen 7840U Windows system with at least 32GB of RAM and 4TB of storage so here's the Ayaneo Air 1S Ultra with a 5.5" 1080p OLED screen, up to 32GB of RAM and 4TB of storage, and a choice of Windows or (soon) Linux operating systems. (Tom's Hardware)

This is another of the tidal wave of portable Windows and Linux gaming PCs based on the latest AMD chips. Despite the high-end specs it weighs just 405 grams - a little over 14 ounces. That makes the 669 gram Stream Deck look positively obese.

Performance wise it's roughly a match for the Xbox Series S - not the high-end X, but still respectable for something that will fit in a coat pocket.
Samsung's high-ish end 2TB 980 Pro is available for $100. (Tom's Hardware)

That was the benchmark price of a low-end 1TB drive 18 months ago.

If you get one, though, make sure to update the firmware or it could suddenly die.
And don't buy the 4TB model because there isn't one. (Tom's Hardware)

There are devices out there advertised as 4TB 980 Pro but (a) they are not made by Samsung and (b) they do not hold 4TB of data. Well, not without losing 3TB of it, anyway.

Reading the related Hacker News thread did give a name to a practice we apply rigorously at work: The "scream test".

If you are planning to shut down a service, after giving everyone appropriate warning and making sure all stakeholders have signed off, turn it off or otherwise disable it while keeping the data intact.

If no-one screams, you're safe to delete it.
Also a timely reminder that your data isn't safe in the cloud, no matter what uptime guarantees and service level agreements you might have unless it is backed up to a fireproof, waterproof NAS on another continent so here's one of those. (Serve the Home)

I use it. It's free and supposedly secure. The only troubles I've had with its free version is that you have a limit of how many subfolders you can add (I have three and it stopped me from doing a fourth), and I've yet to figure out how to set my default font to something larger. But, you know, free.

I have about four ways to get to work in the early am. All of them stink, but the one I use as default stinks a lot less. One involves driving through a skeevy area; one involves driving partly through an even worse area; and the third is just the reverse of the way I come home in the evening, so, dull. There are one or two others I've tried. Lousy road surfaces and a lot of lights.

Thanks. There's no way I can continue to use Cox it's just unreadable. I wonder if you can create subfolders in subfolders? I need to keep an archive separated by year for important e-mails. Free's the way to go, not going to pay for e-mail acct. Not interested in reactivating a Yahoo! or GMail.

IMAP keeps all your mail on the server so you can access it from different PCs. Outlook does that. POP downloads the new mail to you computer, when asked, and only keeps a copy on the server for a limited time (set by you or when your server mailbox fills up).

For POP you need an email client like Thunderbird (I still use Eudora). Thunderbird will also configure as an IMAP client.

Wow a whole Gigabyte! My first HD was a Seagate 20MB (Mega) MFM drive. Then a RLL 30MB and finally a 40MB. I have a few of those still.
RLL = run length limited
At work we had an HP80 series with a separate box for HD, floppy and power supply. The HD was all of 5MB partitioned into 4, mimicking the 1.44 floppy (stiffy actually but everyone had a dirty mind so it didn't catch on as a name).

Interestingly, was never a gamer (not since burning quarters playing "Galaga" and "Galaxian" in college in the early 80's). old Told the wifey: could probably really get into it now, but she refuses -- having been a "gamer widow" of boyfriend previous to our dating & marriage over 20 years ago

[Aside: On T-Mobile have had a tremendous Kyocera ruggedized MIL-STD phone since 2018 that I've dropped literally 1000 times. Have beat the crap out of it (looks like a damaged Schwarzenneger Terminator). The unswappable battery is now unable to hold much of a charge, the USB charging port broke long ago, & the wireless charging now frequently overheats and occasionally doesn't work at all.

Anyway, started shopping for a new phone this past weekend and happily stumbled onto a similar ruggedized MIL-STD unlocked Nokia XR20. Purchased one from eBay for $430 and will put into service next weekend, having studied all the tips & tricks of migrating data from old to new Android phones.

42 I like the idea of accessing emails from other providers in TBird. I've used Cox for over twenty years and they're my internet provider. I could keep it and get access in TBird which it doesn't look like you can in Proton. That way I don't have to go to every place I put in the Cox email and change it. That might be a consideration, although it looks like the interface might not be ideal.

The one at home is a 2 TB SSD. It is kind of amazing. I would be interested to see a graph for how processing power, Storage and ram has increased as a function of time.

They're still claiming they have no access to your emails, so they can't give anything to "authorities." Is it true? I'm really just trying to keep as much info as possible from being picked up from my online presence.

Not as hot as usual in the Southwest. I can see a mountain nearby that still has some patches of snow on it. In the twenty plus years I've lived in the area, it's never had snow on it after the first week of June.

56 Your latest email is never protected as it is sitting on your ISP's server. With POP you can download your mail to your own PC and have it delete that mail on the server. Any 'legal' access will catch that new mail. Hope your ISP doesn't keep a backup for ever.

The monsoon season is running late in Las Cruces. This summer has been unusually warm with highs in the 105 range (typically we are 5 to 10 degrees cooler). I have seen the big clouds starting to show up though, the summer rains should start happening over the next 2 to 3 of weeks. The forests here have to be bone dry - one lighting strike away from a major forest fire breaking out.

elm, a text based email client. A better version came along called pine. MSDOS was king then in the PC world, Windows was at its beginnings, a GUI over MSDOS, so no email. I don't remember one for the Apple II machines either.

By robust do you mean it crashes? We haven't had crashes here -- my two kids and my late wife use(d) it.
I'm still using the last version of Eudora. Used it with XP, Win 7, 8.x, 10, 11 with no problems. I have mail on it from 1995.

93 I use Microsoft Outlook as my email client. A few years ago Microsoft sorted out their email backend for their consumer facing email and since then I have found it be stable and it syncs perfectly across my PCs and phone. The only issue I have run into is my profiles go sideways from time to time and I have to recreate them and sync things up. It is a trivial thing to deal with. I have tried all types of different web and desktop clients over the decades, such as Thunderbird, and they all generally worked OK but eventually I found them to lacking in features, reliability, and such. Outlook isn't free but I am ok with that - it is like a utility bill anymore, one that gives me fair value for the cost. YMWV.

No, Lousy-ana. I'd suspect the same holds here except I do see the stage set for the road repair -- the flags and barrels and flashing lights on sawhorses. But I rarely see any humans doing anything there. I think they get high school dropouts, point to a site, and say, "See whatcha can do." The end result is usually as amateurish as you'd expect, or if it is decent it doesn't last before a new pothole appears.

Just our experience:

We tried the Chromebook route with a kid and it's horrible if you've ever done anything with a PC or expect to do PC things with the Chromebook. If all you want is facebook and youtube (essentially a large phone), they're probably fine, but I can't recommend them for anyone with needs beyond that.

I can't recommend a system right now, but Amazon is about to start their "prime days" sale and should have some decent deals. If you've got a Best Buy near you then you can search open box stock (comes with full warranty) on their website and find some great deals that way. Some will ship, too. Open box excellent = new.

I read the first two books in the series, but stopped because they were giving me a bad taste in my mouth. It's been a while, but if I remember, the big reveal at the end of book 1 turns out to be that the white guy is the evil cannibal troll. I found it an interesting take and quite amusing.

And then in second book, the protagonist makes a deal at the end with Cthulhu to destroy our world, basically because of the wickedness of white people. They were unjust and unfair and evil, and so therefore everything must burn.

I stopped reading his books after that, because once was interesting, twice starts to feel like he doesn't like me.

231 Re: Protonmail, I have found the way to set the default font to something else. Click on the little Settings wheel. You'll get a left-side menu. Pick "Messages and Composing," scroll down to "Composing," and there's a "Composer default font/size" choice with drop down boxes for font and size. When you change it, the system says "Preference saved." When you start a new email or reply to one, your new setting will be the default.

As for more than three folders, no, you have to pay. 3.99 Euros a month for 12 months gets you unlimited folders, 10 email addresses/aliases, and unlimited messages per day. Whether that's worth it, you have to decide.

Programs: generally, you will need to buy new software.

Data files: you can copy them to the new machine. There are multiple was to do this.

I didn’t mind my Chromebook so much. What I did mind was having to convert all my Windows files to the Google format, which complicated my teaching life. THAT got aggravating, and very old. But I was lucky. I knew teachers whose Chromebooks simply quit on them.

HP often has great specials. Twice I have bought 17" laptops for under $350. HP.COM and not from dealers. Windows 11 Home installed but you can always do Linux.
