  • Some say we'll end in Brave New World,
    Some say in 1984.
I stand with corporate flag unfurled
And push like hell for Brave New World.

But if we had to end again,
I think I know enough of life
    To see that coddling morons*
    Brings us to Harrison Bergeron.

Complex systems won't survive the competence crisis. (Palladium)

The world grows more complex by the day, and we haven't had a dumber ruling class since 1913. And that worked out just great for everyone, so nothing to worry about.
America must be understood as a system of interwoven systems; the healthcare system sends a bill to a patient using the postal system, and that patient uses the mobile phone system to pay the bill with a credit card issued by the banking system. All these systems must be assumed to work for anyone to make even simple decisions. But the failure of one system has cascading consequences for all of the adjacent systems. As a consequence of escalating rates of failure, America's complex systems are slowly collapsing.
Not just America, of course, but America is the exemplar here of past greatness rapidly corroding from within. Many of the countries affected by this disease were never great, or their greatness was a century or more past.

I mentioned Twilio yesterday, with their brilliant three word billboard - Ask your developer - the point being that even if you, the manager driving past, didn't know about Twilio, your technical staff did, replaced by some sesquipedalian drivel about reducing cost of acquisition, but that's just one tiny example of this, and to some degree it's an example of the brain rot that affects all large organisations. Large organisations cannot innovate, which is why they acquire small ones.

    And then destroy them.

What's the solution? With businesses, you let them collapse into bankruptcy and sell off the pieces. With countries, the traditional approach was war, but that is frowned upon these days.

    * No offense to the Horde, who are the good kind of moron. Best I could do in two minutes.

70 >> with people who think the 21st Century began that day, or who think it's a matter of opinion whether it did or not

This is the Year Zero question. Currently, in standard calendars, and long term dating, there is no Year Zero. That is, 1 BC was followed by 1 AD. This is a problem, just fucks up all nice math related to this (which gets complicated -- calendar computations can get quite vexxing).

Now, an informal rule has been adopted by the Astronomical Community reqarding Year Zero. We take 1 BC to be Year 0. This makes things Nice.

Further, we use Gregorian dates after Oct 15, 1582, but Julian before than, and proleptically extend the Julian calendar however far back is desired before then.

That gives a discontinuity. But that makes the most sense, logically. Seriously, Mr. Spock would agree that was the most logical, given the discordant mess of dates and times we have to deal with.

For me it is quite simple. The first century was not complete until 100 years had completely passed, at midnight on 1/1/101. So the first millennium was not done until 1/1/1001. So the second was not complete until 1/1/2001. QED.

The same is true of your car's odometer. When the counter rolls over to 1000, that means you have only *completed* 999 miles. The thousandth is completed when you roll over to 1001.

That is all Perfectly Fine. That is equivalent to setting the Year 0 as 1AD. All perfectly fine. But when accounting with a an actual Calendar year 0, that means that this year is 2022, not 2023. :-)

They decided the nicest was thus to to make 1BC zero, so AD years would be the same numerical value, and let the difference by one be on the BC side.

March 25, is "Lady Day", you can look that up, I forget the details. That used to be the beginning of the calendar year in England until they switched the the "New Style Calendar" in Great Britain, on , 14 September 1752.

The messed up the birthdates of many a Founding Father. Most just chose to proleptically extend their birthdates to Gregorian.

At the time, Gregorian wasn't used in Brit language, because Catholic. They recongized the superiority of the Gregorian in tracking the seasons, but didn't want to acknowledge it was Catholic. So "New Style".

But in everyday life, we had no Year Zero, and so Year One was not complete until the moment Year Two began, etc.

Geo. Washington, the Sine Qua Non of these here United States, was born, at the time, on Feb 11, 1731, Old Style (Julian). That is Feb 22, 1732, New Style (Gregorian).

In Old Style, March 24, occurred a year before March 25. When they switched to New Style, the year 1752 had only 9 months, plus or minus. If you were born on Jan 1 to March 24, your birthday got shifted a year, otherwise 11 days.

Ben Franklin suffered the same 1 year difference. The Founding Fathers were no dummies. They knew it was but a labeling difference. They all just proleptically extended their birthdates to New Style(Gregorian)>

The entire system failed again 4 hours later. Now I face the daunting prospect of replacing the entire system at very considerable cost. I am told this could entail the outlay of up to twenty thousands of American dollars.

I had hoped to spend such a sum on a kitchen remodel, perhaps some new paint and carpet. But those hopes have gone for naught, dashed upon the brutal realities of the situation just as surely as a doomed ship is ruined against the unforgiving rocks of a distant shore.

The experience canard. "I can't get just anybody, look at the scope of this thing! I gotta get someone with Experience, and just hope they don't stab me in the back."

In a way, it's really not a canard though. Not for any raw talent or skill required, but for the internecine politics of it. Anyone leading a federal department had damn well better know and have a stake in all the convoluted power struggles and cliques and claques and whatever else. The system will only accept one of its own.

167 Who was it that said yesterday that Juneteenth isn't catching on because national holidays are supposed to celebrate national victories which are part of the culture which tie us together as a country. Like 4th of July.

Juneteenth is the day slavery finally ended, but we still have slavery because share cropping and Jim Crow, and redlining, and redistricting, and voter suppression... leaves no victory to celebrate.

181 First deep sea submersible was 'Trieste,' purchased by (not built by) the US Navy. You're not going to believe who built it. Go ahead; we'll wait.

A huge mumblestucking hint: not Mexico.
You can usually get your subs to resurface, if they're full of cocaine.

Lots of great deep sea rescue movies, going back to the early days of sound film. In real life, Swede Momsen did it once, and that's it.

Before I go, I must confess I'm a dilettante and a piker of Astronomical time, and epochs.

Above, I referred to UTC time as "AM". There is no such thing. UTC/Zulu is always expressed as a 24 hour clock. as all ephemeris and coordinate time scales are. There is no AM and PM. My apologies. I am but a newbie in the ephemerides of our our Epoch.

This is even worse than my previous dilettante error of referring to coordinate right ascension in degrees, rather than hour angle.

I'm learning, forgive me.

What grows more complex are the tools we use to attempt to defy the world.
