Oopsie! The FBI "Unintentionally" Spied on 278,000 Americans
FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate visibly stunned Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley on Tuesday with his estimate of how many Americans the Bureau has "unintentionally" spied on. Abbate testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Hawley grilled him as to why the FBI would not commit to publicly releasing the 1023 form relating to President Joe Biden and his alleged foreign business dealings. Abbate said doing so would endanger the life of the document's source, prompting Hawley to argue the source's name could be redacted. Abbate then said Hawley should take the source's safety "seriously." "I also take seriously the fact that your institution has repeatedly abused its authority, has repeatedly targeted political opponents ... Your institution is the one that, according to the court, the FISA court, ran 278,000 unwarranted -- probably illegal -- queries on Americans, right? That was your institution, correct?" Hawley asked. "With respect to the compliance incident, yes," Abbate said. "Compliance. You characterized the unlawful querying, 278,000 times, of American citizens as 'compliance issues'?" Hawley pressed. "We've said before, I've said, that [it's] totally unacceptable," Abbate said. "Who's been fired for it?" Hawley asked. "Individuals involved are handled through the disciplinary process." "Who's been fired for it?" Hawley asked again. "In the case of the unintentional instance, where something similar happened, we have fired people in the past." "Wait, I'm sorry, what does that word salad mean? The 'unintentional instance'? What does that mean? Who's been fired for the 278,000 times that you improperly or illegally queried the database for American citizens?" Hawley pressed. "When we find intentional incidents--" Abbate said before Hawley cut him off. "Wait, you're saying that the 278,000 queries were unintentional?" Hawley asked. "I believe that's correct."
He then changed his claim from saying that all of the 278,000 cases of illegal spying were "unintentional," to only saying that the "vast majority" of these crimes were unintentional.

"Wow," Hawley said, visibly shocked. "278,000 times, American citizens' information was queried by your agency unintentionally? That's your testimony?" "I would want to go back and check that, Senator, but yes, my understanding is that the vast majority of the--"
"Wait, but that's different. You just said it was, you just said it was unintentional, now it's the vast majority?" Hawley asked. "Which is it? Do you know?" "I would want to go back and check it," Abbate said. < "So you don't know?" Hawley asked. "My understanding is that likely all are -- were unintentional." "'Likely all.' So first it was 'all of them,' then it was 'vast majority,' now it's 'likely all,' so 'you don't know' is the answer to the question?"

As I've said many times, there is great value in just exposing these people. Cruz mentions that he's asked all the time about abolishing the FBI. That was an insane position a few years ago, but now it's mainstream. How do you think that happened, and do you really think it will have no effect on voting patterns?
As to what else they're doing, I don't know, but I'd guess that there's lots of stuff happening behind the scenes.

They fail a lot. What they really detect is changes in heartbeat and stuff, which doesn't tell you if a person is lying or not. The idea is to see what a person's state is like when they're lying, when they're telling the truth, using obvious statements first. Then ask the real questions.

I've had probably a dozen of them over the years for security clearance purposes. I think they mostly do what they claim they do...detect evasion. And that works to keep honest subjects honest. Heh. I vaguely recall a story from a few years ago where some guy was mailing bombs. They had video of him at one place but it wasn't clear enough to ID him.
So they just identified everyone at the place he mailed them via their cell phones, they cross referenced it with all the people at the other places they believed he mailed them from and then went after the person that was in all of them...and it was him.
I think they even found where he was by tracing his cell phone.
So they've been doing this for a while now. At least in that case it was a real crime but still

The Senate as its built now can't do much, but Hawley can build a coalition to vote against any funding. It would probably fail, but 30 Republicans standing in front of Congress saying they're perfectly willing to shut down the entire federal government in order to protect America's liberties would be quality failure theater at least.
The real action is in the House. The House alone can shut down the entire federal government by itself. Pass a budget that zeroes out the budgets of every federal agency using the power of the Speakership and Whip to get enough votes, and then go fishing for the next year as the executive either shuts down or decides to function without Congressional appropriations, eliminating the silly fiction that we have representative government anymore for all to see.

How much of that is similar name errors?
I mean approaching 1% of the population in illegal search is a problem, but without knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the errors it's difficult to say.
That being said, we shouldn't allow this without a specific warrant in place prior to any investigation, period. Errors logged as search errors with specifics and any intelligence is to be destroyed.

I truly wonder at this point with all that is being exposed, what the morale is like at the FBI. What do the average agents who work there think at this point? I have to think most of them were proud when they joined the bureau.
