Top Story

  • Another day, another mid-range video card launch. Today it's AMD's Radeon 7600. (Tom's Hardware)

This is basically an RDNA3 respin of the previous generation's 6650 XT, with 2048 shaders and 8GB of VRAM on a 128-bit bus. That's the same memory configuration that hampers yesterday's 4060 Ti from Nvidia, and really isn't acceptable on a video card that costs $399.

The reason I'm willing to cut AMD some slack here is that their card costs $269.

Which even in these trying times is still less than $399.

Personally I'd buy the current 6700 over the 7600 - it's the older RDNA2 architecture, but has 10GB of RAM on a 160-bit bus, giving it a bit of an edge. But the 7600 is an okay card at an okay price.

Which is to say that it's a miracle of modern technology, with 13 billion transistors in a chip smaller than your thumbnail, and we should be amazed that it exists at all, never mind that it's available so readily and so cheaply.

(My first computer had a Motorola 6845 video chip running at 3.5MHz and could be persuaded to display somewhere between 10 and 12 colours if you were really persistent.)

Unfamiliar Kettle Video of the Day

So it looks like our electric dolphin left VOMS because (a) another company waved a lot of money at her and (b) that other company has basically left its Japanese operations in the hands of a former drug-dealing Yakuza dragon who is close friends with said dolphin.

I heard the name mentioned over the past week but I've been too tied up with work to keep up to date with Vtuber corporate hijinks even when it involves some of my favourite talents.

Disclaimer: Voice, check. Kettle, check. Dayo, check. English/Japanese, check. Nope, no idea who she is.

1 Hi, Pixy. Firefox keeps minimizing every few days when I open it. I do the fix, but it happens again later. What do you think is the cause?

Yeah, the TV series settled into a "hardening of the format" routine. So many movie and TV closed mysteries bring all the suspects together for the final revelation that it's a cliche now. I much prefer some variation.

35 RE: revelation of the murderer . . . one early Ellery Queen involves him creating a trap for the murderer, so that his own actions convict him; and another gives us a car and plane chase (in 1933!) from New York to Chicago. One John Dickson Carr (I won't say which one) has detective Dr. Gideon Fell attending a wake for the murder victim and pointing out the killer, and not all the suspects are present. There are many ways to reveal your murderer!

42 I guess languages that don't use an abecedary or alphabet don't see the same sort of drift and mutation of personal names, do they? Like Chinese, the ideographs used to represent a syllable may change over time, but the syllable itself doesn't, so Xiang is Xiang, ten thousand years ago as well as today. But if you have a writing system that's intimately tied to pronunciation only and not meaning, you can have a ratchet effect where the orthography drifts, which makes the pronunciation drift, which makes the orthography drift more.... add in effects from transliteration between different languages and scripts, making allowances for some languages just plain not having the same phonemes available as others do....

Did you get assaulted by a homeless person yet? If not I would head directly to Voodoo Doughnuts. They tend congregate there and are generally surly because they are coming down and want money and food which you obviously have because your are at Voodoo Doughnuts. If that doesn't work try parking in a bike lane for 5 minutes or go hang out at Pioneer Square while wearing a red baseball cap.

Part of the problem with VOMS is it's just a tiny outfit. As far as I know, Gyari runs everything himself. I remember Pikamee saying she really hoped people liked her new model because she shelled out $10k of her own money to have the new art done and rigged.

Also, she mentioned she really wanted to do 3D. A high-end 3D mocap setup can cost upwards of $80k, plus there's a $30k recurring software license. It's doable for a company like Hololive because they can spread the cost over 75 vtubers.

Check out this comparison between a $100 and $25k system. You get what you pay for - look at the hands and feet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WZSCVeGblU

I question whether Vshojo is going to be able to do that for her. I was hoping she would show up in Hololive, though admittedly that was a long shot.

I went to school at PSU and worked there is the 90s. It was a loony bin at that time. I lived in Vancouver, WA or as Portlanders called it "the trailer park capitol of the universe and because of this my classmates and coworkers sprayed me with disinfectant when ever I walked into a room. In later years I would go to Portland for self punishment trips and to eat over priced pretzels. Eventually self punishment morphed something approximating attempted murder and I had to give pretzels.

You notice what is happening at all levels of leftists now? Nebulous accusations of 'threats'. Always. About everything. The important thing is to always say they are being threatened- and thus are beyond reproach (no matter what they are doing.) Pedophiles? Murderers? Rapists? All ok as long as they were 'threatened.'

I met a somewhat retarded young man at the lake yesterday who enjoyed telling me his life story. Where he works now, where he used to work, his plans to enter into a group home. He was fishing and his electric powered bicycle was equipped with all sorts of unique storage for his rods and tackle. He claims to travel everywhere on it through rain and snow even. I didn't see a license plate on it but he did complain about how much the state charges him to use the roads.

It was a pleasant day and I just let him talk away. As I walked away I remembered a lesson my parents taught me about 'there but for the grace of God' and I counted my blessings in life.

April 24, 1943 a Panamanian freighter docked in New York harbor caught fire. It was loaded with over 1,300 tones of explosives that included AA ammo, depth charges, and block buster bombs. Due to the heroic efforts of the Coast Guard and fire fighters it did not explode and instead was towed out to deeper water to be scuttled.

121 New Mexico's Crescit eundo. Translated from Latin, it means "It grows as it goes" and has been criticized for appearing strange or even nonsensical at first hearing. However, the intended effect is more clear if one considers it within the context of the epic poem De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things) by first-century B.C. Latin poet Lucretius. Here, it refers to a thunderbolt increasing in strength as it moves across the sky, referenced by the selectors of the motto as a symbol of dynamic progress.

This young man had the day off apparently. He works two jobs, one mucking the stalls of a horse farm up the hill M-F and a weekend job apparently in some sort of construction. He used to be a dishwasher for a restaurant and would start at 7:30 in the morning and work until 1:30 at night. He did complain about co-workers who would call out sick all the time or not show up at all. He seemed proud of the fact that even using his bicycle for transportation he always showed up.

I guess the lesson he wanted me to know is not to judge him on how he looked or how he spoke. Which I did not - but I was pretty amazed at his accomplishments.

Same goes for their mottos and Great Seals. New Mexico's is quite new and is called the Round House as it is circular. This I find an amusing unintended commentary about the nature of government. It is completely devoid of the more common Federal or Greek influences and embraces the Pueblo and Spanish heritage. It's quite beautiful and blends into Santa Fe and the surround land effortlessly.

I live a very short distance from two 'horse farms'. I've always wondered about them. They have horses but no one ever rides them. The animals have to be fed and housed and their stalls cleaned frequently. A lot of work for what?

The only theory I have is that these are former race horses that the owner made a lot of money racing and wants them to have a peaceful rest of their lives and is willing to pay for their care.

This evening I am going to listen to a young man, I met at a poetry reading where I make everyone suffer for my art, perform his original compositions. I think he and I are going to become great friends because of this.

161 Yonder Horde. Got the pool pump hooked up and running yesterday. Today we vacuum up the crud that managed to collect on the bottom. I think it will be swimmable by the weekend.

Maybe. Depends on water temp.

Probably the day after Trump gets indicted in GA and by the Feds.

As the saying goes, the people we are up against aren't Boy Scouts, they mean business.

Living in Pennsylvania, which is one of the last states to hold Presidential primary elections the contest is invariably over long before we get to vote. So all I can do is watch what other states decide.

If life was fair Trump would win both the primary and November election in a landslide of such proportions that the cheaters can't overcome. But anyone north of 29 years of age knows that life isn't fair.

I would say it is impactful. Hey, mom, you remember how you said you would give me a garbage bag and shovel if I had to hide a body?

180 A new survey of about 1,000 veterans found no evidence that the population harbors more extreme beliefs than the rest of the American public — though its authors acknowledged that the results are limited by how many people were willing to be honest about their extremist stances. And it did show that about a third of veterans surveyed believe in the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory – that people of color are being allowed to enter the U.S. to upend the white majority.

My first computer was a Kaypro-2, running a Z80 at 2MHz. No graphics at all. That being said, for its day, nearly half a century ago, it was a wonderful machine, particularly for word processing; and with it, I made a lot of money. And it still works!

186 >GitLab is great software

It's written in Ruby on Rails, and Zed Shaw was 100% correct about Rails. The functionality is great but that codebase is eventually going to hit its breaking point. It already needs a server with a minimum of 8GB of RAM just to run.
