I assume that there is an older Gerard ter Borch.
Posted by: redridinghood at May 25, 2023 09:41 AM (NpAcC) ++++ There was not. It was typical during this time for artisans to apply generational elements to one's name - "The Younger" or "III" or somesuch - to draw distinction for his work. During this era, the arts were dominated by great families descended from the Renaissance period of artistic expansion. Moreover, the establishment of the guild system during the late middle ages limited access for independent artists who could not claim lineage. Independent artists looking to end-run the guild system and gain legitimacy in art world would frequently move to a different kingdom where the specific noble and merchant families were less well-known or even unknown, assume a multi-generational appellation and fabricate a less-pedestrian backstory for his family. Through this process, he could achieve legitimacy and earn a living even outside of the guilds and major families. As a result of this behavior, many artists claiming to be the decedents of illustrious names were in fact the first of their names. This is a fun painting. I like the double meaning of 'playing': the lute and the girl's playfulness. Ter Borch does a nice job with brilliant color, in this case the royal blue and satiny white on the girl's dress. It makes her stand out and brings the viewer's eye to her expression. Even though the other clothing and cloths are softer, they still give the feeling of detail. But it all comes down to her expression.
BTW, based on some other of ter Borch's works, the model might be his sister. Posted by: JTB at May 25, 2023 09:51 AM (7EjX1) 124

There was not.
Deep thoughts by DU: The National Debt... is it a long term problem? Right now, servicing the National debt costs the US a full 9.0% of the entire US budget.
There have to be some great solutions. Deposit 31 fancy Trillion Dollar Platinum coins in the Treasury, then pass a balanced budget law requiring taxes and fees are adjusted to produce the ZERO bottom line annually? If you start from scratch, reform the tax laws for greater fairness and proportionality it can be done. 31T in debt is only 250k for each and every taxpayer! Problem is, one side thinks balancing a budget never includes increasing revenues. Spending cuts are the one & only solution to everything. It's stupid, but consistent. If we can borrow at 4%, and grow the economy at 5%, we are better off. You're looking at the cost of servicing the national debt as being wasted money, but you aren't considering the value being created each year by the things that were financed by that debt. to spend a trillion dollars a year to serive the debt...It's taking money from things like National Healthcare. The worst Treks are those which abandon logic and story sense completely without something special to compensate. "Alternative Factor" has a neat quite scene where Kirk and Spock *try* to make some sense out of the events so far, and they do a decent job given the story premise, but it still leaves you going, "Huh?"
"Plato" is rather chilling, and Spock's reasoning as to why the telekinetics cannot band together to defeat one of their number is quite, uh, logical. "Miri" I have to love because of Kim Darby, and it is imaginative. If the script had made the planet a former Earth colony that had fallen silent, as in James Blish's story adaptation, it would have worked better. I think the silliest Trek TOS was the one with the shootout at the OK Corral, where Spock knows all the minor details of this hugely important event in Earth’s history.
Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at May 25, 2023 *** True. But Gene Coon (writing as Lee Cronin) needed to get some important info across to the viewer, and decided it was best if Spock did it. As for the weird false-front sets, it gives the whole episode a cold, brooding quality like a darkened stage set. Sort of like Expressionism (MP$, am I using that term right?). Better than using Bonanza's Western town set for sure. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at May 25, 2023 10:22 AM (J2vNu) 272

Happening now: Richard "Bigo" Barnett, the man who put his feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk on 1/6, has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison and 3 years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors were asking the judge for 7 years in federal prison. These are the same prosecutors who haven’t charged a single person in the Russian collusion hoax. Barnett stated that he only sat in her office with his feet at the desk after request from reporters who just wanted a picture. A White House photographer captured the picture. The FBI won’t release the footage or names of undercover agents and yet the judge decided this man received a fair trial. America is broken. Rules for us, none for them. Swalwell vindicated! In a letter to Swalwell dated Monday, the committee said it will take no further action in the probe that began in April 2021 into “allegations raised in the complaint that you may have violated House Rules, laws, or other standards of conduct in connection with your interactions with Ms. Christine Fang,” the suspected Chinese spy.
Swalwell said that despite his cooperation with the FBI, which never accused him of wrongdoing, a complaint was filed against him by an unnamed House Republican. It's the damn GOP bloodsuckers spending taxpayer $ frivolously & thereby weaponizing their positions to cast guilt on Dems. Rep Swalwell is an amazing, upright lawmaker & family man. This was in deed a smear by the left. Coffee before pants! I love it. I have my first cup or two on the patio weather permitting. Wife says I gotta wear pants. If mtg is breathing she’s blathering. Another trumped up nothing burger from the Rs. This won’t stop Rs from continuing to defame Swalwell - they know that 95% of Rs won’t know the “investigation” came up empty. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at May 25, 2023 *** Again, true. They often stepped around that by saying the ship and crew were dealing with "the most advanced society" on the planet. But recall that they had only about 50-52 minutes of story time. Not much room for "diversity" (in its original 1960s sense). It would have been neat to have two intelligent races on this week's planet, one humanoid and one not, and to see that evolution there was still going on -- and would until one race or the other was extinct. In a speech he asserted that Europe has, for now, gone far enough – if it introduces any more regulations without the rest of the world following suit then it will put investment at risk and harm the economy. This week, the European People’s Party – a centre right grouping which includes the German Christian Democrats, the party of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen – seems to be joining in.

European Commission Admits to Handing Millions in Tax Cash to ‘Far-Left’ NGOs
“The EU is creating and financing its own advocacy and activist groups so they can artificially weigh in on EU decision-making”. …. In a statement on the matter published on Tuesday, Commissioner Hahn admitted that the EU hands millions in funding to a wide variety of left-wing groups, with the bloc giving over €4.5 million to ‘No Peace without Justice’ — a group originating from the so-called ‘Transnational Radical Party’ — and over half-a-million to “Droit au Droit”, who profess to campaign for “marginalised groups”. The Commission claims to have had no meetings with ‘No Peace Without Justice ‘, despite the multi-million payout. Hahn failed to reveal how much the EU hands to the likes of Amnesty International and George Soros-Linked Open Society Foundation” Posted by: SMOD at May 25, 2023 11:00 AM (RHGPo) 431
The buggiest technology in the universe until TNG introduced the holodeck.
Posted by: Oddbob at May 25, 2023 10:58 AM (nfrXX) --- Considering the catastrophic damage both technologies could do, it's a wonder that anyone used them at all. Star Trek: The Motion Picture had a transporter accident at the beginning. Fortunately, they didn't show us what happened. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at May 25, 2023 11:00 AM (YIVH2) 432
However, the "transporter" solution became so iconic that you could not do Star Trek today without it. It's a key distinguishing technology between Star Trek and every other generic science fiction show out there.

We have record tax receipts every year, this year totaling about $4.5 trillion, and they still think the problem is that they're not collecting enough.
Fine. I'll agree to 100% wealth taxes on billionaires if they can outline $1 trillion in cuts they want. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, on just the weirdest trip with John Boorman at May 25, 2023 10:05 AM (LvTSG) False. The Premise, I mean. The Feds do too much, it's not what they can collect its everything they should not be doing in the first place. There need to be much more than budget balancing, there needs to be a reset of the republic and the Feds need to kneel at the feet of the states. deep breath... ok, ok.. The U-Haul guy is a "nut case".
He spent 3 months planning to takeover the United States .. by himself without arms. Yeah. It's a repeat of Jan-6, except he was trying to have an insurrection of one. I'd like to see DOJ charge him with seditious conspiracy of me, myself and I. It's more likely they will create a protected class of "U-Haul truckers with swastikas."
