Hollywood Writers Go On Strike For a Bigger Slice of Streaming

A Hollywood writer's strike means a temporary pause in seeing white men berated and humiliated in "entertainment."


A festering dispute over how writers are compensated in the streaming era came to a head Monday night, as leaders of the Writers Guild of America called on their members to stage Hollywood's first strike in 15 years.

The boards of directors for the East and West Coast divisions of the WGA voted unanimously to call a strike effective 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, the union said in a statement.

Thousands of WGA members were set to walk picket lines across Los Angeles, New York and other cities Tuesday after the union was unable to reach a last-minute accord with the major studios on a new three-year contract to replace one that expired Monday night.

"The companies' behavior has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing," the WGA said in a statement. "No such deal could ever be contemplated by this membership."

In a statement, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said it offered "generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals."

Writers are seeking a larger slice of the streaming pie that has dramatically transformed the television business. They voted by a historic margin in favor -- 98% to 2% -- to grant a strike authorization sought by their leaders if they couldn't reach a deal on a new film and TV contract on behalf of 11,500 members.

The walkout, which could last for weeks or months, is expected to halt much of TV and film production nationwide and reverberate across Southern California, where prop houses, caterers, florists and others heavily depend on the entertainment economy. The previous writers strike in 2007 roiled the industry and lasted 100 days.

They're demanding a bigger piece of streaming as streaming looks like it's on the verge of a collapse. A consolidation, where most of the also-rans are put out of their misery and sold to the few big players left standing.

You can see why Hollywood writers would think that they deserve a raise, what with all the Unqualified Successes they've been scoring with their relentlessly-innovative creativity, taking one old movie and TV show after another and, get this, just writing the exact same thing again but with the main character gender- and race-swapped.

This is, of course, the very zenith of creativity, and all of Hollywood should take a bow for it.

No, last strike was right at the start of streaming. They got peanuts for the months they were out because no one had any idea what the actual business model was or how it might make sense.

Since then, billions have been thrown at streaming while billions have not come back. It's a money pit, and the writers want a greater slice of it.

It's funny to hear comparisons between the plight of writers today versus the lives of writers in the 70s when television was three network channels that had tens of millions of viewers each instead of hundreds of streaming options with a few having millions of viewers and most having thousands.

As for movies and tv series? There's enough very good old ones out there that audiences could be occupied for a very long time watching them.

I Love Lucy had roughly 30-40 MILLION viewers each week in the 1950s. Roughly 1/3 of homes then did not own a TV set when her show was broadcast.


Granted there were only 3 choices of TV then, but you have to remember the US population in the 1950s was half of what it is today.

There's only so much meat in the entertainment pie, and until streaming drops in price massively it won't be ubiquitous. And it won't be able to carry the bloated admin costs of TV networks on its back. If its a way to watch a movie/show and has no overhead it might be profitable. It's not going to save the bloated network/movie industry though.

315 While traveling last week I saw two movies in particular, that convinced me that there's something in the zeitgeist.

Both feature "worm's eye view of historic events" plotting, which is something I love.

The first is "Amsterdam", which is a David O Russell movie, so it will;l be a comedic dramedy.

The story concerns 3 friends who meet during WWI and settle after the war in Amsterdam. Two of the friends are wounded soldiers. The third is their nurse.
The nurse and one of the soldiers fall in love. And through complications they all wind up in NYC, where they stumble across an actual historical conspiracy.

MASSIVE SPOILER:
Here's where the movie will raise the hair on your head. It is basically a conspiracy by Our Betters to place a chump in the office of the President as a fascist dictator. In history, the "chump" tricked the Nazi-types and named names. Part of his speech is shown during the credits. In modern times, Our Betters found their willing chump.

The parallels keep on coming as medicine is used to control bothersome types, and medical clinics are a part of the "Group of 5's" plan to get rid of that era's Deplorables.

The movie also deals with the idea of people "following the wrong god home", which you can certainly see the results of in today's society. And also the idea that history repeats or cycles.

The BONUS here is that "Amsterdam" is wonderfully acted, plotted, and directed. Very much worth watching just as a movie. As usual (according to Rotten Tomatoes) the critics hated "Amsterdam" and the audience likes it much much better.

Though I can't blame the Libtards for disliking "Amsterdam", it shows them their own face in the mirror and they don't like it.

346 The big problem with T2 is it couldn't be topped.
I went to see it twice, in the theater, when it first came out, and have seen it how many times since and it holds up.
It's an amazing movie and that's that.
'Predator' is another one.
Neither of these movies should have worked, but they do.
Tremors. Went to see it at least 5 times. Like, paid to see it (matinees, back when).
I actually didn't have a problem with T-Genysis.

347 The second movie was "Belfast", which came out a few years ago. It is based on director/writer Kenneth Branaugh's boyhood in Belfast during "The Troubles"

Basically, the movie shows what it's like to live in the Ultimate Blue Shithole, when fanatics violently push their agenda on people who just want to live their lives their way.

In the end, the choice is to fight, die, or leave.

People bailing out of Portland and California may enter your thoughts as you watch.

Wonderfully acted, directed, and written.

Maybe it's just coincidence, but there definitely some movies coming out over the last couple of years that seem to shine a not too thinly disguised critical light on what is happening in America these days.

A producer who was an indie producer told me he could not get white men any gigs at all in television or in the movies as writers. This has a lot to do with why you are seeing all the diversity crap on the screens.
