Ron DeSantis Escalates His Fight With Disney; Mentions Possibility of Building State Prison on Land Adjacent to Disneyworld

This escalation comes after Disney's escalation. Just before DeSantis' replacements for the Reedy Creek development board were set to come in, the old Disney-shill members voted all of the board's authority to be transferred to the Disney Corporation for all of eternity, or at least as close as is legally possible:

The newly created Central Florida Tourism Oversight District says the binding agreement passed last month by the previous board hands Disney total power over development of the area.

The declaration is valid until "21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, king of England", according to the document.

Such so-called royal lives clauses have been inserted into legal documentation since the late 17th Century, and they are still found in some contracts in the UK, though rarely in the US.

And he talked about playing hardball until Disney relents.

DeSantis is fighting this obviously-illegal transfer of political power to a corporation and will get it revoked in court or by the legislature, or both.

The Florida Legislature will reassert that the state has control of Disney World's Reedy Creek Improvement District, Gov. Ron DeSantis declared in the theme park's backyard Monday.

At a news conference in Lake Buena Vista, DeSantis also said lawmakers would take away the company's self-inspection of rides and monorails and allow the state to examine a ride if someone is seriously injured on it.

He then mused about potentially selling off utilities, and even developing district land that Disney doesn't own.

"People are like, 'Well, ... what should we do with this land?" said a smiling DeSantis. "... Maybe create a state park, maybe try to do more amusement parks? Someone even said, 'Maybe you need another state prison?' Who knows? I just think that the possibilities are endless."

He also said the last-minute moves by the outgoing board to grant Disney wide-ranging powers over the district had a "plethora of legal infirmities" and that a provision of state law allowed the state to revoke such development agreements.

DeSantis' hand-picked oversight board, which will meet on Wednesday, will also consider revoking the development agreement and other measures, he said.

The governor said lawmakers could move on the bills as soon as next week.

Asked whether the state would take away the ride inspection exemption granted to all major theme parks in the state, including Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Legoland, DeSantis suggested only Disney would be affected.

DeSantis threatens to build a PRISON next to Disney as payback for trying to strip his powers: Florida Governor ramps up Reedy Creek war and refuses to let 'corporate kingdom' serve 'as its own government'

...

DeSantis railed against the Disney corporation for trying to outmaneuver him when it cut a special deal with the old oversight board it controlled before the new board, appointed by him, took over.

'They thought that they could create some type of development agreements that would essentially render everything that we did null and void and put them in control in perpetuity for this. Well that's not going to work. That's not going to fly,' he said.

He said legislation is in the works to nullify that agreement.

'One of the Florida's statutes provides the legislature with the authority to revoke development agreements in this exact type of instance,' he said during the press conference.

'And so I've worked with both leaders of the House and Senate. There is a bill that will be put out in the Florida Legislature that will make sure that the agreements purported to be entered into by Disney are revoked and the people's will is established,' he noted.

'We will not have one corporation serving as its own government,' he declared.

He said that even if the legislature didn't revoke the agreement, the deal wouldn't hold up legally, calling it a 'sham agreement.'

...

'For them to try to do an end run around the people of Florida to shows how arrogant they are,' the governor told iHeart radio in Orlando Monday morning.

'We are also going to have our state control board meet on Wednesday. And they're going to be unveiling a series of initiatives designed to make sure that Disney is held accountable and so stay tuned for those as well.'

A source tells The Federalist's Tristan Justice that this corrupt scheme is void.

According to Florida statute, local governments -- in this case, the Reedy Creek board -- are required to take three steps when making changes to special district agreements such as the one that established Disney's quasi-governmental status. They must hold two public hearings, advertise those hearings in a local newspaper, and offer notice by mail to "all affected property owners before the first public hearing."

In a statement to the Associated Press, Disney said the agreements took place in public.

"All agreements signed between Disney and the District were appropriate, and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida's Government in the Sunshine law," the company said.

Disney's first hearing on the issue was held Jan. 25, and the second on Feb. 8. The company advertised proceedings in the Orlando Sentinel. The last requirement of Florida law, however, that all affected property owners be given notice by mail, was skipped entirely, according to sources familiar with Disney's proceedings. The missed mandate means the company would have to restart the process for its 11th-hour resolution to be valid.

When corporations become brazenly political beyond their business scope they don't deserve to be treated like businesses anymore. The idea is we treat corporations apolitically because their profit motive is supposed to be fundamentally apolitical inasmuch as politics doesn't directly impact their business. When they use their power to Wade into the political arena to use their profits to pursue specific ideological political goals they should be treated as ruthlessly as you would a foreign actor in the same instance. As the soulless corporation knows no loyalty beyond its own ambitions, and is not practically accountable to the fate of any sovereign.

To be fair (sorry, I do not mean to be contradictory) I think whenever anything like this goes wrong you can find an engineer who predicted it. I don't know how obvious it was beforehand. I know that I have walked out of projects that were unsafe but I have never been in on anything this big. Anyone who claims they predicted it and did not walk off needs to be ignored.

The whole program at that point was PR, though. First woman, First black, first geezer, first teacher --opps, scratch that last one.

Now, I don't know that this was the best shoot...but I don't think it was ever beating criminal reasonable doubt. Especially if government land won't even give you the indictment - either terrible prosecutorial presentation or grand jury relationship...or a message sent that we aren't blue like other places...

Posted by: Zombie Robbo the Llama Butcher at April 17, 2023 05:54 PM (N3zMI)

----------------

This is not a trivial point. There hasn't been a "King of England" since 1707, when England and Scotland were effectively dissolved (along with their respective kingships), replaced by the United Kingdom of Great Britain. Charles III is King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

So even if every other legal avenue to overturn the old board's power grab failed (and I'd rather it be overturned on a more general "this is bullshit on stilts" position rather than picking at a detail error), it could still be easily brushed aside for this.

Discussing the 2016 election in 2021, he said "I am actually not a Trump fan at all. I hope he won't run again." Peterffy also says the Republican Party is "completely adrift". However, he did donate $5,400 to the 2020 Trump reelection campaign and cited his support for the president because he is "very committed to antisocialism, anticollectivism". Peterffy lives three doors down from Mar-a-Lago, where he is a member.

Peterffy donated $7 million to the Senate Leadership Fund a super PAC closely-linked to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. In the 2022 election he donated $6.8 million to Republican-aligned super PACs.

256 And pertaining to everything - this is all because of corporate law.

All corporate law does is create a very, very big financial entity ... by which anyone with the necessary ambition can rise within and then manipulate to their own ends, with little or no personal responsibility.

But we love our cars. So we love our corporations. Which absolutely hate us.

You got a f--ing problem, a--hole?
Posted by: New Jersey at April 17, 2023 06:25 PM (rDG9M)

Speaking of a-holes, on Friday, I was using the ladies room in the Wawa at a heavily trafficked part of the state of PA not that far from NJ, and there was some chick who has having a fight with her boyfriend while she was on the toilet, Every other word was "F'ing". It seemed an inappropriate place to have a have a telephone slugfest with her boyfriend, especially since there were only two stalls and there were four people waiting to use the bathroom. She could have been from PA or NJ, but she could have saved the "f-fest" fight till she got in her car.

263 OK so I'm a bit calmer now. Netflix removed a petition to stop the show over this ridiculous race swapping because it "violated their community standards"

I was gonna post about this on the ONT, but not really. It was 5 sad looking dudes (and actual dudes) holding pathetic signs that no one could read unless you were right up next to them. Worst. Protest. Ever.

267 Miss Lindsey: This is a stark reminder that Al Qaeda and ISIS still exist, and is yet another example of how having troops stationed in the region – working with partners – allows America to hit the terrorists before they hit us.

It's a pity they can't drop the people behind that show off somewhere in Cairo so they can explain to the Egyptians how they're actually Africans.

272 More than one Cleopatra movie coming out, also controversial (just as outrageous as being wrong about the ethnicity of Cleopatra is the claim that she is very bland looking, them's fightin' words) -

“Which Hollywood dumbass thought it would be a good idea to cast an Israeli actress as Cleopatra (a very bland looking one) instead of a stunning Arab actress,” asked journalist Sameera Khan. “Shame on you, Gal Gadot. Your country steals Arab land & you’re stealing their movie roles.”

273 If I recall correctly from that era, the original designed for the solid rocket boosters had them designed as one long airframe unit and were to be floated down the Mississippi to get to Florida. That was immediately shitcanned by Congress screaming at NASA because there were too many missed opportunities for graft and pork by hauling them across the country in pieces.

Posted by: Azathoth at April 17, 2023 06:10 PM (wb1YC

The original SRBs were designed to be "similar to" the SRMs from the Titan family of boosters. There was a program to develop a single pour motor using the site of an abandoned TVA nuclear plant, which was cancelled after Challenger. There was also a project to develop a graphite wound SRM casing, probably related, also cancelled after Challenger. There was a big deal when the two demonstrators were delivered by rail to Marshall. They're currently attached to the sub-scale shuttle demonstrator at the Alabama Space and Rocket Center.
