The Morning Rant: Misanthropic Style

Mis Hum Rant.jpg

***

I detest liars. And I'm sick and tired of being lied to about China. The list includes private sector types to those with government titles. Anyone with an ounce of common sense, an 8th grade education and who isn't being enriched by the Chinese knows that: China is not only an economic competitor of ours but is also an enemy of the American way of life.

STORY: Speaking to the Sydney Dialogue audience via video link, the chairman of the U.S. Special Competitive Studies Project said that China was unlike the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, because it was "an autocratic competitor that is run by technocrats that is very capable of inventing a new future."

He also criticised the U.S. government for restricting Chinese researchers from moving to the United States to work on technologies like quantum computing, saying: "Why would you not want the smartest Indians and Russians and Chinese out of those countries and in your country?"

Because the smartest Russians and Chinese are spies for those respective countries Einstein.

Appeasement of the Communist way of life certainly isn't making it easy on Uyghurs.

There may be a small handful of Congress critters who truly care about the plight of this minority in China. The vast amount of them line their pockets with their Chinese connections. From the Bidens to the Salwells to the Feinsteins to the Pelosis to the McConnells, they care more about their wealth than the average American.

The following does not sound like competitiveness. We aren't talking who makes the best walking shoes. We are talking cold calculated espionage. This type of activity by an American in China would most likely end up with a death sentence.

U.S. intelligence agencies were aware of up to four additional Chinese spy balloons, and questions lingered about the true capabilities of the one that flew over the continental United States in January and February, according to previously unreported top-secret intelligence documents.
.
The Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States this year, called Killeen-23 by U.S. intelligence agencies, carried a raft of sensors and antennas the U.S. government still had not identified more than a week after shooting it down, according to a document allegedly leaked to a Discord chatroom by Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard.

Another balloon flew over a U.S. carrier strike group in a previously unreported incident, and a third crashed in the South China Sea, a second top-secret document stated, though it did not provide specific information for launch dates.

A document produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and dated Feb. 15 — 10 days after the Air Force shot down the balloon that flew over the United States — contains the most detailed government assessment to date of Killeen-23 and two balloons from previous years, labeled Bulger-21 and Accardo-21. It was not clear from the documents if Bulger-21 and Accardo-21 were the same balloons that flew over the carrier strike group and crashed.

The Discord Leaks

Dozens of highly classified documents have been leaked online, revealing sensitive information intended for senior military and intelligence leaders. In an exclusive investigation, The Post also reviewed scores of additional secret documents, most of which have not been made public.

Who leaked the documents? Jack Teixeira, a young member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, was arrested Thursday in the investigation into leaks of hundreds of pages of classified military intelligence. The Post reported that the individual who leaked the information shared documents with a small circle of online friends on the Discord chat platform.

What do the leaked documents reveal about Ukraine? The documents reveal profound concerns about the war’s trajectory and Kyiv’s capacity to wage a successful offensive against Russian forces. According to a Defense Intelligence Agency assessment among the leaked documents, “Negotiations to end the conflict are unlikely during 2023.”

What else do they show? The files include summaries of human intelligence on high-level conversations between world leaders, as well as information about advanced satellite technology the United States uses to spy. They also include intelligence on both allies and adversaries, including Iran and North Korea, as well as Britain, Canada, South Korea and Israel.
What happens now? The leak has far-reaching implications for the United States and its allies. In addition to the Justice Department investigation, officials in several countries said they were assessing the damage from the leaks.

Bulger-21 carried sophisticated surveillance equipment and circumnavigated the globe from December 2021 until May 2022, the NGA document states. Accardo-21 carried similar equipment as well as a “foil-lined gimbaled” sensor, it says.

A U.S. official speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence said the government naming convention for such balloons is alphabetical, from A to Z. It appears that the balloons are named after notorious criminals, including Tony Accardo, James “Whitey” Bulger, and Donald Killeen.

Annotating what appear to be detailed photos of the balloon that flew over the United States, presumably taken from a U-2 spy plane, intelligence analysts assessed that it could generate enough power to operate “any” surveillance and reconnaissance technology, including a type of radar that can see at night and through clouds and thin materials.

The overflight of the carrier strike group will raise questions in Congress, where Republicans seized on the spy balloon issue to accuse President Biden of failing to deter Chinese espionage.

The Pentagon and Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment.

The incursion of the spy balloon into U.S. airspace in late January probably caught elements of China’s government by surprise, according to a third document that relies on intercepted communications. Knowledge of the incursion was likely “heavily stovepiped” within the Chinese military, which lacks “strong senior” oversight of the surveillance balloon program, the document assessed, adding that some in the Chinese government viewed their Foreign Ministry’s response as poor for allowing the crisis to be “sensationalized.”

Another day, another story about the Chinese Communist state infiltrating American soil.

The FBI and federal prosecutors announced Monday the arrests of two New York residents who allegedly ran an undisclosed Chinese government police station in Manhattan's Chinatown neighborhood.

Lu Jianwang and Chen Jinping have each been charged with conspiring to act as agents of China's government, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for that office, said China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) "has repeatedly and flagrantly violated our nation's sovereignty, including by opening and operating a police station in the middle of New York City."

China is out to destroy the US way of life. They are guilty of but not limited to: fluctuation of currency, poisonous pet food, unsafe drywall, commercial espionage.

Russia is not a threat to the US contrary to what the Industrial War Complex believes. It's about time the US Government reign in the Chinese Communists and their sycophants.

And if they won't do it, perhaps our Woke Society will.................

And why were those tolerated and not shot down? Was there a good reason for leaving them to survive - reasons like "we were jamming them and gather intelligence about Red China's capability" or "we were feeding them bad data on purpose to confound the enemy and wreck their assessments" - or were they merely ignored?

More importantly, perhaps, why should I believe them if they say there were strategically-valid reasons for letting them pass?

They will. They will do so the moment the checks stop clearing, or the moment that they judge that alignment with Red China is no longer the soundest bet. For many people in the government, I think the latter is underway. Not for all, of course, but for some of them. Our China policy has been pretty schizoid over the past several years. It has not been uniformly pro-China, which surprised me. My best guess is that some powerful people in the government have seen the conditions and status in China and are moving away from it.

That is not all good news. They still won't work for *this* country, just for whoever they think the better bet is.

We never would have allowed ourselves to become dependent on the Soviet Union for key products, but for China it became somehow OK.

We did this in the belief that economic openness would make China more like America. Instead, we've made America more like China.

They also see opportunities for their own totalitarian ambitions.

Red China is a major leader in recognition AIs. They use those systems *everywhere.* Facial recognition to track its subjects through the vast camera network and maintain logs of everyone's movement (or even automatically dispatch cops if it's someone they *really* want). Ditto for vehicles. Their AI-driven online censorship activities are extremely sophisticated.

We lead in industrial AI and stuff like OpenAI that generates products, but we are middling when it comes to recognition. They may well see an opportunity to give our panopticon a shot in the arm with some Red Chinese expertise.

100 Sure, they have some good coders, out of a pop of 140M. The Chinese have 10x that pop, and also produce very good coders. Their educational system is built to identify and develop them early on.

It's not the same. A lot of Russians grew up getting the most out of very limited hardware, like Gen X and older Europeans and Americans did. So they know how computers actually work and they're excellent reverse engineers.

China pretty much never had that problem, and they certainly haven't since Clinton handed them Most Favored Nation. They turn out millions of people who can semi-competently fiddle with your Node.js setup but making a microcontroller blink an LED would have them shouting "Norman, coordinate!" in Mandarin.

:: raises hand ::

It depends on what you mean by power. The BRICS are big enough economically to shatter international dollar-based settlement. For Russia, it is a strategic imperative that this happen and for China it is a strategic preference, but they are not alone. Our treatment of Russia - namely cutting them off of dollars unilaterally and seizing their capital abroad and not even bothering to have a war first - has made a lot of countries very, very nervous.

China and Russia have finally hammered fissures into the international settlement system, and it's going to continue. It will not be Yuan, but will be non-Dollar (or at least, not exclusively Dollar). This is the real crisis that is waiting for us around the corner. It will probably involve lots of currencies and gold to settle international trade, and the ability for us to sequester inflation overseas vanishes. That inflation comes home. Fast.

None that I am aware of, but that's not the point, your intimation of them being a technological backwater is short sighted, they are largely a self-sufficient society, that manages to live within their means and exercises an outsized influence over other state actors, which if they were aligned with the West would have served numerous and sundry purposes for doing good.

Which is demonstrated by the many trillions of dollars expended to contain and oppose this, supposed "backwater country."

Once the Berlin Wall fell, the reasons for opposing Russia evaporated, unfortunately the WEF/PARTY OF DAVOA/MIC/Uniparty/NEOCON/NEOLIBERAL cabal that truly runs the world had other ideas.

They might try against Taiwan. I think they probably will, but it is not a guarantee.

141 It depends on what you mean by power.

The only sizeable economic powers in that grouping are China and India. India is not going to make their economy dependent on their mortal enemy - China.

142 Red China is not to blame. They are savage commies who have no respect for human life or dignity. The Chinese people should have thrown off the commie yoke years ago but that has proven to be difficult.

Our problem is our "leaders" and those they employ in the imperial federal government who only care about lining their own pockets.

Abolish the federal government and all they employee and Red China becomes a pimp without a whore.

Honestly, I'm not quite sure what China's waiting for. They must be too enamored of 256-Dimensional Chess and Subtlety.

There are big upsides to a quicky smash and grab takeover of Taiwan. With or without intact chip factories. Easy access to a deep water port for their subs being a big one.

The US is practically a discount satrapy with all the major pols being owned and even our military chiefs openly stating they'd warn China of any aggressive action against them.

Things aren't going to get any better than they are now.

Demographic issues. Meh. They've got a lot of weak-ass countries in SE Asia to poach from in Chinese Bride-Hunt 2023.

Again, who's going to interfere with them? No one.

We'd be hard pressed to run even token resistance short of nuclear war. To which the Chinese say...thanks for helping to solve our demographic issues. And they've probably loaded up our computers for that with viruses given the insane access they have within our gov't and major industry.

Right now or soon is their best opportunity to run the table.

Eh...well, it's a good thing they're addicted to the long game.

It will not be Yuan, but will be non-Dollar (or at least, not exclusively Dollar). This is the real crisis that is waiting for us around the corner. They are NOT a self-sufficient entity, i.e. an autarky. What little they have comes from selling oil and gas for foreign exchange.

As to their outsize influence, they've been TRYING to exert their influence in the way they did 50-80 years ago. It isn't going well. I predict that parts of the Russian Federation will break away in the next 10 years, because Putin has so thoroughly destroyed their military capabilities with the Ukrainian fiasco.

Which is demonstrated by the many trillions of dollars expended to contain and oppose this, supposed "backwater country."

Yup. One of the biggest problems we are going to face is that our ability to run chronic, jumbo-sized trade deficits will decline and we will also see - both because of that and other reasons - a reduced demand for USTs (the asset of choice in balancing the deficit). USTs won't be as important in trade and won't be in such high demand internationally. That is a serious problem for federal finance.

If Biden is in the office, there's a better chance we *wont* try to stop them. Japan certainly will, and will certainly make it hurt - but Taiwan is within China's land based airpower range. Japan cannot long term, keep China from minimally blocking any and all transport rolling into Taiwan. And that's really all they have to do. Keep Taiwan from bringing in food and arms, and the place will eventually capitulate.

We could contest that. And it would get bloody fast. China has numbers, we theoretically have quality. If they are willing to bleed us white, they can probably win that fight. And if we don't engage with sufficient forces early, that likelihood goes up.

I think by happenstance rather than design, but yes - I largely agree. The inflation is going to be a serious problem nonetheless. It needn't be a mortal problem, though, unless we make it into one. High inflation - which I think is all but guaranteed as international pivots away from the Dollar - need not be hyperinflation (which is currency death, and is always a political cause rather than an economic one). We can come out of it with stronger industries and better sufficiency and that should be the default outcome. Because it does, however, depend on this government doing something in a way that isn't the wrongest way possible, it is *not* the default outcome.

Democrats focus on using the power of the purse and dispensations they give to hamstring American progress industrially and make people dependent on others and government for their way of life.

The GOP rather than calling out this hamstringing vociferously act at best as a check on the wildest democrat excesses without ever quite working up the courage to hit them in the groin repeatedly on the game being played on the electorate.

Perhaps they figure America will collapse from within first and that that's the best -- as you say "long game" -- play for them.

204 Chinese theft of American technology has been happening for decades. And, so far, no one in a position to do something about it has. It's just a fact of life taking place on a day ending in "y". It's only the past few years that we, the hoi-polloi, have finally begun to understand how tightly the uniparty is engaged in this theft and the selling out of American interests.

Well, that's the play regardless of who's trying to stop them.

And not just 3 Gorges. A properly coordinated demolition of the Chinese Dam system would almost totally destroy their industry and create death on a scale unseen in human history.

But, if Taiwan wants to stop Chinese, they need to make them understand the cost very clearly.
And make sure they can penetrate Chinese defense to accomplish that destruction.

221 The issue is, to me, that the current post-1971 system has been anti-Industrial. By design or happenstance idk. Or embraced happenstance (prob)?

Spot on. I think by design. The middle class is simply too uppity for the tastes of the elite. So they did a twofer. Exported work away for cheaper labor and bigger profits - while also knocking down the wages of the middle class.

The elites want a second world economy. They don't mind paying more for their yacht and cars. They really don't mind having less of those things. But they do mind not being able to say jump and the hired help asking how high.

When the national debt goes from 30% of GDP to 125% in 45 years, it's overspending. Also, the Chinese did something like that, and now have a 300% debt to GDP ratio, with huge amounts of pointless infrastructure, and no social safety net. I don't trust the government to spend the money wisely.

Yes. Sadly.

"Inflation" is a word I try and not use. Overdefined.

We absolutely see price increases. And a loss of purchasing power. Undeniable. Infuriating.

But if the current system is generating price increases via chronic industrial suppression, then I am not sure that USTs losing status as global reserve currency will exacerbate that problem (necessarily).

Also, it seems deindustrialization is a requirement for "hyper-inflation".

And the threat of that seems to grow the more the US tries to preserve the current system.

But yeah, the crazies seem to prefer being King of Shit Mountain for a year more than any alternative.
