Earlier Than Usual Quick Hits

How can I be expected to go to school on a day like this.

Everyone clap for your brave FBI agents, who protect us from terrorists such as pro-life protesters who pray near abortion clinics:

The FBI on Monday arrested a man who allegedly stormed the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, riots while wearing a panda costume over his head, according to court records.

Authorities arrested Jesse James Rumson on several charges, including obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building and engaging in physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings, among other offenses, according to the arrest warrant.

The typical laundry list of bullsh!t. "Engaging in physical violence" does not mean attacking a police officer, or they'd have charged him with that. It means like rocking the gates or something.

Allison Brie took video of herself running naked down a hotel hallway to surprise her husband to calm his premiere-night jitters. She posted it to Instagram; don't get too excited, she pixelated it before she posted it. She is naked in Horse Girl, though. It's... okay. It's very much an Independent Movie with all the tropes of a capital-I Independent Movie. It's a genre-bender movie, merging a story about trauma and mental illness with a sci-fi premise about lost time and similar weirdness. She's definitely suffering from hysteria, but is she also delusional and schizophrenic? Are the sci-fi type things she's seeing actually there? Because it's an Independent Movie with literary-style pretensions, it cannot commit to resolving which of those movies represents the real story and remains ambiguous all the way through the symbolic ending. I can understand why they did that, but it leaves everything feeling unsatisfying and unfinished. I knew they wouldn't resolve the question about what was real and what wasn't, but they still needed to bring things to some kind of emotional closure, which they also didn't do. It's kinda good...?, with a question mark after it, but I can't fully recommend it. You might like it, you might not, you might be like, "Did I like this? I have no firm opinions on the matter. I did see Allison Brie's boobies, though."

The designer Sam Brinton stole from identifies another piece of her stolen property on him:

20 Dude, *I* would've been better than Daniel Craig. I don't even think he would dispute that. He was easily the worst Bond of all time. Yes, that includes Lazenby.

I liked Lazenby. Upon rewatching OHMSS I came to appreciate the movie more. Its got its flaws (the weird sped up combat sequences, for example), but its better than I (and a lot of others) gave it credit for. I thought Roger Moore was the worst, even though he did turn in some good performances despite the scripts.

She's just grumpy that she *assumed* that he was a press whore and he turned out not to be.

That's funny, for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is the implication that he had to right to question Boot-edge-edge because he wasn't a press whore, and that, had Boot-edge-edge known that he was not a press whore, Boot-edge-edge would not have responded to him.

That's the really funny part. Only credentialed press whores are allowed to ask questions. Some rando crossing the line and asking questions is bad. I am certain, in fact, that it is a threat to Our Democracy.

Brian Atlas and Pearl Davis videos are fascinating for a perspective of what young people know (not much) and what they believe (yikes).

In this case 2 women (I think both actual women) argue it is transphopic to not want to sleep with a tranny. This, by the way, is the end goal of all the current trans crap - trannies are mad no one wants to have sex with them.

An excellent example showing why F'in Biden and all members of the Junta avoid holding press conferences, and why they only do interviews with MFM outfits who will toss softball questions. They go in having nothing but talking points and excuses (Trump caused it!); when pressed to go one level deeper (rarely), they flounder and begin calling reporters names or indignantly yell at them to buy time or abruptly end the press conference or interview.

See, she can just storm off and not engage, and I am sure she's in a YASS SLAY QWEEN thing now.

I dunno why even bothered to respond after he made his point. He said a correct point, that he didn't want to sleep with a tranny because trannies are dudes and he's not. When she wigged out, he should have just said something like, "I said what I said. Trans-women are men. I know it. You know it. They know it. I'm not a fag, so I don't want to bang one. Be as pissy as you want to about it, but your rage won't change reality. Leave if you want to. You got here in the first place, so you know where the door is."

124 20 Dude, *I* would've been better than Daniel Craig.

=======
Lazenby wouldn't have been my first choice to succeed Connery, but he suffered from the comparison unfairly.
He did a great job in his one-and-only, and if Connery hadn't come back for the big payday despite his protestations, Lazenby might've done well in Diamonds Are Forever. I liked Roger Moore (my first Bond) as he had the old school British grace about him, with occasional flashes of the dangerous operator beneath. I always thought ffoulkes was his Bond audition movie. Maybe he might've passed on The Living Daylights but that's not entirely his fault. (And it was a big payday.)

What an odd statement, and one counter to any standard of journalistic integrity.

Journalism - that is, the activity undertaken by people properly trained in the craft - is a non-partisan activity that stands guard against the excesses of power by the government. It is structured in such a way as to serve the public interest and ensure reliable information. When journalists - real journalists who have training - report on something, they make great strides to be correct in their reporting and there are structures of editors and other journalists to ensure that they are. They also know how to balance the need to speak truth to power with the need to ensure social harmony.

Journalists are not trolls, and do not shore up or tear down any given person or thing in the name of scoring political points or advancing a political agenda. These so-called "citizen journalists" of social media have no such restraint. They have no training, no sense of social responsibility, no commitment to the truth, no desire to act in the public interest.

I don't like all his movies, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood might be the best and last Hollywood movie.

But he can't always put the pieces together right. And his race hangups, ala Django Unchained and The Hateful 8, really piss me off.

Tarantino is one of those filmmakers heavily influenced by Jean-Pierre Melville who told cold stories of criminals navigating their own moral code in the violent underbellies of society (his best movie, Army of Shadows, applies that to the Resistance in WWII).

That's fair. But real stories are real stories, and most of the time, they're super boring. And sometimes... they're fascinating.

A whole race of people beating their own into submission and selling them to alien invaders? That's fucking crazy. A whole race of people marching to their death because it's polite? That's fucking crazy.

Those real stories are stranger than fiction... those vengeful fantasies are what we would *expect* to happen in these circumstances. But they didn't. That's what's fascinating.

It's not likely to be this, but in the late '50s and into the early '60s Bob Clampett had a puppet show, and later a TV cartoon series, called Time For Beany (on TV, Beany and Cecil). Beany was a small blond boy who wore, well, a beanie. Cecil was his buddy the Seasick Sea Serpent. (You'll see this mentioned in a couple of SF writer Larry Niven's early stories, as he uses Cecil to help the reader imagine what his puppeteer aliens look like.)

Again, I doubt they're referencing this. I thought it was fun, though. The show was full of puns and sight gags, much like Bullwinkle.

========
That's not really true. Most of his protagonists are some hardcore guys (and one Bride) who have seen and done a lot of hard things. But when push comes to shove they will act according to what they think is right. And often times it is the right thing, done with a vicious sense of self-righteous fury that the audience can appreciate. The only films/film scripts that don't really fit that mold are Natural Born Killers and True Romance, which have couples as co-leads; one couple are very much not protagonists, and one is almost naively positive and above the firestorm they set off.

Tarantino makes a creepy villain as an actor, though. I understand that he played the villain, Harry Roat Jr., the role Alan Arkin did in the '67 movie, when Broadway revived Wait Until Dark in the late '90s. Marisa Tomei played Suzy the blind lady. That I would have paid to see.

Outlaw types hear about a wild bar in the middle of nowhere that's fully stocked with booze, gorgeous hookers, drugs, etc. and flock to it. Then when the bar fills up, the doors lock and the vampires eat. Makes sense to me.

408 I have the vaguest ideas for a vampire story where the strongest vampires come from the weakest humans. Their powers aren't physical but otherworldly, and the weaker, more vicious, and more evil the original human, the stronger the subsequent vampire is.

It's really no more than a base concept without a story, but it lingers, asking for an actual plot to deploy it.

They were subsisting on travelers.
======
The answer to your question is in the final scene of the movie, which is a long shot of the cantina from behind. It backs up to a canyon rim and connects to a large Aztec temple down below. The vampire "gods" have been using the roadhouse as a trap. Since it's in the boonies of northern Mexico, who's to know or care what happens to unwary and unwise travelers who don't leave by midnight?

Tarantino wrote the script for NBK, but the studio gave it to Oliver Stone to direct. Man, you want to talk about a difference in styles... Stone was heavy-handed about the whole thing, although he did get Tarantino's barbs at the news media and Hollyweird for celebrating the wrong kinds of people for "controversy" and ratings. NATO may want to run that by Putin first. Last I heard, the enemy always gets a say in whether or not the unit holds its position.
