Recall Alert

Via CBD:

Nestle Purina Petcare Company Voluntarily Recalls Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental Dry Dog Food in the U.S. Due to Potentially Elevated Vitamin D

Nestle Purina PetCare Company is voluntarily recalling select lots of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EL Elemental (PPVD EL) prescription dry dog food due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure. Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction.

Purina is taking this action after receiving two contacts about two separate confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the diet, to date. Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered.

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics . .

Check product codes at the link. Kinda scary that the prescription foods would be affected like this.

I am re-posting the entry from last week about red boy Chief because I posted it late and if you missed it, you deserve to read it. My brain was sort of out of commission. It's a great story:

Chief Red Boy.jpg

From: Lurker Since Before Kaboom (LSBK)

I've shared pictures of Chief with the horde before. However, those pictures kept one physical attribute about Chief hidden (not on purpose). He was three legged, a tripod.

I was looking at adding another dog to the pack. I already had Mattie, my blue Australian Cattle Dog (ACD). I was looking on the Web at shelters and rescue organizations for another ACD. Well, very early in my search I came across Chief via a rescue organization in Colorado. Chief was from the high desert area of northern New Mexico and was currently being fostered in Durango, CO. When I inquired about Chief he still had all four legs - he just could not use his right front leg and it was damaged beyond any hope of using that leg again.

A little background about me, I've spent almost forty years in a wheelchair due to an automobile accident which resulted in me becoming a paraplegic. I have a house with no stairs so Chief was a perfect match to join the pack. I finalized the adoption of Chief and then he was scheduled to have surgery and have his leg amputated. The rescue organization paid for his surgery and his flight to my location/home.

Chief was an interesting dog. It was suspected that his injury was a result of a tango with a motor vehicle. He had some scars that the Veterinarians said look like road rash as a result of being run over. For about the first two years when he was with me, whenever we went for a walk if we encountered a white pick-up truck either driving by or parked Chief would lunge at the truck. He would only do that with white pick-up trucks. No other color or type of vehicle would set him off . He eventually out grew that behavior. I always suspected that his incident involved a white pick-up truck.

3 legs did not slow Chief down. In his youth he could pace me at 20mph while I was on an ATV. We went on ATV adventures in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana. Also, when he was younger, Chief would chase rabbits with abandoned and at an amazing speed. He would be loudly moaning during the whole chase. I suspected that he lived on rabbits during his time in the high deserts of New Mexico. He soon learned that he did not have to work so hard for a good meal at my home!

Well, there came a time when he wasn't eating like he used to. Something was up. And then he started to have seizures. We went to the Vet and X-rays were ordered. The X-rays showed us 3 things about Chief. One, the vet was amazed that Chief could even use his rear legs. He had severe arthritis on his spinal column. Most likely an injury from his tango with the pick-up truck. Two, he had buck shot in him. The Vet suspected that the amputated leg probably had more buck-shot. Lord knows what Chief's life was like in the deserts of New Mexico. And lastly, the X-rays showed that Chief had wide spread cancer in his lungs and had more than likely spread to his brain - the reason for his seizures.

His remaining time with me was short. I made an arrangement with my Vet to come to my home when it was time. Chief had stopped eating for a couple days. HIs last night he had a bad seizure and the following morning he had another. It was time. I lost my red boy Chief on February 14th, 2015.

My heart was broken on that Valentines day. As time has passed when Valentines day comes around I always remember my red boy Chief and the good times we had together. If Chief could have "spoken human" you would've pulled up a chair and had a listen. Oh, the stories he could have told! He was a great dog and great friend.

16 Regarding Purina Pro Plan.
They have been major sponsors of Field Trials for bird dogs since their inception. Coupons/proof of purchase sent in generate even more support/awards. The not only give away stacks of feed to the amateur winners, they regularly sponsor a banquet at the trials. They were the 1st(and for a long time only) company that made and sold a high protein feed for active sporting dogs(30/20) At the beginning of the month I purchased a 35lb bag at tractor supply, got it home and when I opened it it seems to have gotten damp inside somehow. The little dry kibbles were all three times normal size and spongy. I emailed them to ask if it was a hazard/risk for the dogs..they said not likely BUT, they contacted Tractor supply and had a fresh bag waiting there for me no charge. Yesterday I received a letter from them with 2 more coupons worth up to $80 each for up to fifty lb bags of additional feed.

22 I find it... infuriating that we experiment on dogs. Beagles are evidently popular because they love people and are very docile.

For 'theoretical symbolic' reasons is it appropriate to have one bullet with Fauci's name on it? Multiple calibers? Asking for a friend.

25 Animal shelters often feel very antiseptic. It is kind of sterile. I am not a fan of the hospital look.

The shelter where I got Ajax was run by a crazy lady who had a house for cats and an enclosed barn for the dogs.

I am not sure which is better, per se.

27 I had a beagle when I was a kid and she was the best dog I have ever known. My uncle, who was the town dog catcher, gave her to me because he knew I wanted a dog and knew she was the right dog for me. He was also very tender hearted and could not euthanize a dog. He had a deal with one of the vets to take care of that. My aunt told me that he put hundreds of dogs together with people because it just killed his soul to have to have them put down.

40 Today I repaired "Furball", my kitten Julius's favorite toy. Little plastic ball with rattle beads and a ring of fur glued around the middle so it looks like a little planet. Apparently there is not another one to be found on THIS planet--it's a toy from another kitten years ago--and when I found it broken and the beads missing this morning, oh my!

Julius also knew something happened to Furball; he was very subdued. Good old Elmer's fixed the plastic ball itself, after I found a little short screw to put inside it and make the same rolling rattle. Cut the furry tail off a mousie toy he never plays with, and glued it around the middle. It's so cute how happy Juli is with it now. The things we do for love.

Hard to believe that they are almost a year old and will be accounted adults (technically) next month. Stirling still nuzzles and kneads me first thing in the morning. A grandfather was killed by his violent chicken that previously attacked a child, an inquest in Ireland has heard.

Cancer survivor Jasper Kraus, who was living near Ballinasloe at the time, was killed on April 28 last year after he was attacked by a Brahma chicken.

The 67-year-old Dutchman, formerly from The Hague, Netherlands, suffered a heart attack after the bird drove its spur into his leg, causing him to lose litres of blood.…

Fickle would be assumed to be part of the package.

79 We have an unwanted visitor these days and for a change, it's not a raccoon. It's a stray cat. Aggressive. Male. Seems like it was/is a pet as it's in really good shape, good fur, clear eyes and all that jazz. But it's a PITA. Our cats are all fixed and I don't think this dude gets it. We've run it off dozens of times and it keeps coming back.

Contemplating more "drastic" measures. Including a trap. I'll truck the little turd off a dozen or so miles and let it loose near a farm... assuming I can catch it. Otherwise those other options might be on the table.

80 Sometimes I'll throw a firecracker at the racoons that come on the porch to get the cat food. It works on them, but possums don't care.

81 Piper,
Those kitties are beautiful! Do they join you for barre class?

90 The game is billed as a product that “inoculates players against real world disinformation by showing how sensational headlines, memes, and manipulated media can be used to advance conspiracy theories and incite real-world violence.”

Posted by: fd at February 18, 2023 05:25 PM (iayUP)

91 > Not neutered?

___________
Which? Mine or the interloper? Mine are all spayed and neutered. No idea with this dude... but likely not based on behavior.

Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 18, 2023 05:26 PM (Q4IgG)

92 In the game's plot, the player assumes the role of a social media user who makes memes and news headlines to energize local citizens to stop the construction of a local park for cats (hence, Cat Park). Then, the player, realizing they have been spreading disinformation, must repent for their memes that resulted in the park getting canceled.

We had a rooster that turned violent some years ago. We had to keep a lookout when going out in the pasture because he would sneak up on you from behind. He finally hit my Dad, who whacked him with a nearby fallen branch. We thought he was dead, but he began weakly kicking after a while. Dad wasn't having any of that. He put down his beer, grabbed a nearby shovel, and beheaded the annoying rooster. Later, he reported that it was a scrawny thing, and that "even the soup was tough."
