7.8 Earthquake Levels Apartment Buildings in Turkey; 2,300 Reported Dead so Far in Turkey and Syria

12776868_020623-cc-ap-turkey-earthquake-Adana-imgresize.jpg
Man walks through the rubble of a building calling for survivors.

It struck southern Turkey and northern Syria.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake rocked wide swaths of Turkey and Syria early Monday, toppling hundreds of buildings and killing more than 2,300 people. Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.

On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy night. Buildings were reduced to piles of pancaked floors, and major aftershocks or new quakes, including one nearly as strong as the first, continued to rattle the region.

Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities searched for survivors, working through tangles of metal and concrete. A hospital in Turkey collapsed, and patients, including newborns, were evacuated from facilities in Syria.

This area is already torn by civil war:

It struck a region that has been shaped on both sides of the border by more than a decade of civil war in Syria. On the Syrian side, the swath affected is divided between government-held territory and the country's last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces. Turkey, meanwhile, is home to millions of refugees from that conflict.

The opposition-held regions in Syria are packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of the country by the fighting. Many of them live in buildings that are already wrecked from past bombardments. Hundreds of families remained trapped in rubble, the opposition emergency organization, called the White Helmets, said in a statement.

4 Interestingly, I had just read this weekend about how the Turks were able to capture Gallipoli in the 1200s (I think) because of a massive earthquake.

The area is quite familiar with this kind of disaster. (Doesn't make it any easier to deal with, though.)

19 Yeah, the Civil war that we helped perpetuate. The Civil war that we have prolonged by holding large portions of Syria, and not giving back control to their government.

We have US Troops in Syria, right now, with no cover from the UN, or US Law. We have once more invaded a Sovereign Nation without a declaration of War, or even cover from an Authorization for use of Force from Congress (like the War on Terror).

This is going to make any aid to the region, problematic.

However one of her lab co-workers has all her family in the affected area. Daughter stayed with them at various times doing field work. So far the family has lost everything and they are still trying to locate some missing members.

83 Let's not fall prey to the left's lunatic misunderstanding of risk assessment.

"Usually seismically stable" is in no way "not prone to seismic activity" on a large enough scale. Say an area is rock solid for 1200 year stretches ordinarily, like say the New Madrid faultline. Stability does not equate "not very theatrical when it does let go" I am in awe of the described pyroclastic thrusts the settlers described from the early 1800s activity.

Turkey was evidently "due" the Earf is a dangerous place, and the defense against it is scientific engineering not population control.

201 Like weft said, codes and engineering. My guess, based on recent actual history there, is that in Turkey, as before, the codes and engineering exist, but aren't implemented/enforced, at least uniformly. As I said above, after the last major quake, there was considerable attention to the widespread non-code construction that failed.

There's also the limits to human works. Quake force and energy strike structures in different ways depending on location and local geology. Even some properly built things will be severely damaged in certain circumstances.

On the Syrian side, I think it's safe to say that, apart from traditional construction (which often is appropriate, in a low-tech way, for local issues like earthquakes), codes and engineering are/were generally ..... well, not much of a thing.

Biggest one I can find for the period was 'Great Hanshin Earthquake'.

"Approximately 6,434 people died as a result of this earthquake; about 4,600 of them were from Kobe.[7] Among major cities, Kobe, with its population of 1.5 million, was the closest to the epicenter and hit by the strongest tremors. This was Japan's deadliest earthquake in the 20th century after the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, which claimed more than 105,000 lives.[8]"

So, touché.

That is, perhaps, the fatal flaw within Islam. They believe that Allah controls all reality on a whim. He can and does violate the laws of reality as he sees fit. The Christian ethos sees a God with a more "hands-off" approach in that He created a world with laws that humans can understand and manipulate to create magnificent wonders, but are fully in accordance with established principles laid down by the Creator. He does not interfere lightly and when He does, it's a miracle.

I personally ran into something last night where it was being used to actively attempt to counter wrongthink. Logically.ai maybe? You got a search result where you were given information that looked like what you were searching for, and it was a programmed/"AI" generated script to attempt to convince you that what you were searching for wasn't true.

And when you go to the "about" link on the page it openly acknowledges that's what it does. It says it's used for things like elections, government programs, etc.

Yay.

Which will be more likely to happen by mistake. During Facebook's big outage last year (maybe the year before), the time to resolution was greatly elongated because their electronic access control (the badge scanners at the doors) system used the same DNS servers and backbone infrastructure that had locked up due to a change error. They couldn't get into the building to fix it, and couldn't get in over the internet because the system wasn't functioning inside.

She's also reinitiated contact with the city council person who dismissed us before.

There's that, too. But the number of demons lying undiscovered is probably greater than the number that have been discovered but who's eradication has been deferred due to other priorities. Sometimes, that's even rational. There is risk in everything.

The HOA has, so far, paid for everything. Our insurance has paid for nothing. I'm not sure how that will happen with the other house there being real damage to it instead of the cosmetic stuff that happened to ours (our fence is technically the HOA's property).

The most laughable of all the Marvel movies is Age of Ultron, where Tony Stark creates an AI "creature" named Ultron to automate our defenses. Ultron, predictably, turns on us, and is about to destroy the world, until Stark creates ANOTHER AI creature, Vision, to battle Ultron.
Yeah, cuz the second time, we'd absolutely get it right.

Fences are divisive by design. They are to keep people or other things out.
Your HOA is an organization, a system.
You participate in the HOA system by virtue of living within the HOA's area.

You enable your HOA to perpetuate systemic oppression.

The F-22 has an excellent 20mm cannon that could have shredded the balloon with a quick burst and probably not touched the payload.
