Top Story

  • AMD's Ryzen 7000X3D lineup has prices and schedules, with the top-of-the-line 7950X3D due on February 28th at a price of $699. (AnandTech)

If you've been following along, you might notice that this is exactly the same MSRP as the regular 7950X, making the X3D version something of a bargain. But if you've been following along, you might notice that Micro Center will sell you a 7950X and 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM for under $600. Assuming you live somewhere with a Micro Center because that's an offer designed to get you into the store, and not available for delivery.

Still, it's basically a stealth price cut - AMD trying to avoid sabotaging its perceived value while tacitly acknowledging that the market ain't what it was and won't be for a while.

And it's likely to be the fastest desktop CPU around for a couple of years. Intel's Meteor Lake range should be out this year but may be only for laptops, and AMD isn't expecting Zen 5 to be ready until next year.

  • Mission accomplished. (BBC)

That tiny deadly radioactive thingy - a quarter inch wide lost in a state encompassing a million square miles - has been found. 120 miles from its starting point it fell out of the truck and rolled off the road.

Fortunately with suitably sensitive detectors it glows like a furnace and it had not in fact lodged in the tyres of a passing car and disappeared to parts unknown, so a few days scouring the highway waiting for the clicks to turn into a scream was enough to hunt it down.

Hardly. She still plays hard, interspersed with periods of "Hel-lo, sailor! Glad to see me?" If there were an intact male cat around, I'd have to lock her up. In a couple of weeks I guess it'll be time to have her snipped. I know it's not good for her health to go into heat like this with nothing happening. It's a shame: She's more affectionate to me when she's like that.

Good news from Netflix. I received an email letting me know that the premium plan now has 'Spatial Sound'!

Whatever that is. They include a demo on their email and as far as I can determine it's...louder.

Netflix, I've got a button on my remote for that. How about fixing the shows that are so dark you can't see whats going on even in the daylight portion of the movie?
Or improving the sound so the average TV speaker can pick up the speaking voice of the main character.

And then get the hell of my lawn!

Everyone should have a Electrical Receptacle Tester like this link to Amazon:

https://tinyurl.com/mshjxmnr

Had an outlet testing 'Open Neutral' which is a very bad thing. Pulled the receptacle feeding the bad outlet and discovered electrician 'cheated' - in my opinion - by using the poke the wires in method instead of snaking the wires around the screws. Over time the white wire (neutral) had cracked and come loose and there was evidence of arcing - a very bad and dangerous thing. There are six different conditions this tester will check for. With today's electronics you don't wanna plug anything into a less then perfect outlet.

70 Hunter Biden finally admits infamous 'laptop from hell' is his as he cries for criminal probe

Here is what happened:
The FBI decided to scan the laptop for classified. We know it has some because of the Ukraine email. They were looking for something explicitly marked classified. They found it. But now they are going to give Hunter a distraction by allowing him to grandstand and demand an investigation. The FBI will announce they did the investigation and as a result the DoJ is going to charge Mac with unlawful possession and distribution of classified info. And thus after the SWAT raid and arrest of Mac, everyone will forget to ask why Hunter had classified in the first place.

This is good to know. I was holding out on upgrading my Dell notebook until the PCI4/5 became widely available. But for 3 seconds?

I have been driving a geeked up Mac Book Pro for the past nine months, just switching operating systems and ways of doing work does more to hide any performance pickups or losses.

RTFM is an old tech support acronym. There's an old joke in there about a woman who calls because her computer doesn't work and the support person patiently goes down a list of things to check. In the end she reveals the power went out an hour before. He then asks her if she still has the box her computer came in. When she answers 'Yes' he explains to her how to ship it back.

"Are you going to replace it?" she asks.

"No, you're just too dumb to own a computer."

Anyway, RTFM = 'read the friendly manual' - or words close to that.

90 I'm going to treat myself to a new wristwatch today. It's getting to be battery change time on the one I've had for 15 years. Anytime I change it I stand a chance of ramming an instrument screwdriver into my hand prying the back off, and it's a real pain getting the back on with the o ring. I'm going to get a plain self winder, nothing fancy, like a Seiko or Citizen and it should last for the duration.

I'm willing to compromise only if they prosecute fully the politicians that willfully and joyfully clobbered Constitutional Rights like closing churches, jailing business owners and forcing the jabs. Those people get a minimum of five years of J6 prisoner treatment starting the instant that they are accused. Let them rot in a PMITA prison and wait two years for trial too.

But it seems to me a little misleading and downright evil to create a learning environment that purposefully has content not relevant to the subject.

Then the thing starts crashing because it is trying to update a video codec. And the only option is to delay updating for 90 days. This morning it is crashing because the display adapter driver is "out of date" and the only way to fix it is to update the driver. Fuck you. This computer does nothing but display a camera feed, but i have to futz with it constantly to keep software updated.

174 After reviewing help desk logs and calling presiding and alternate election judges, the county estimated 46 to 68 voting centers ran out of their initial allotment of paper.

But what really happened:
KHOU 11 Investigates compared ballot paper packets allocated to the total number of votes cast and discovered 121 voting centers did not initially receive enough ballot paper to cover voter turnout. The county allotted each of the locations six ballot paper packets, or enough for 600 ballots. But the total votes cast exceeded that amount, sometimes by hundreds of ballots. For example, 946 election day ballots were cast at the Bellaire Civic Center, 990 at Warner Elementary School, and 1,037 at Salyards Middle School.

Paper ballot?

176 It WILL necessitate new LAWS that prevent Harris Co. from ever doing this again.

During the Democratic Party presidential primaries, the DNC disallowed all of Florida's ballots because of Reasons.

I submit that TX does the same to Harris County until they can prove that they aren't a utterly corrupt, banana republic incapable of holding simple elections.

The New York City Draft riots of 1863 were totally unexpected. That's why I warn people who think ''there's no path to 270'' that just when you think everything is going to stay the same... it doesn't.

You can bank on it.

178 Yes, it needs internet. Pulling a remote feed over T mobile home 5G. And T mobile blocks you from setting up a static route.

Research "hosts file" and start blocking IPs

179 After reviewing help desk logs and calling presiding and alternate election judges, the county estimated 46 to 68 voting centers ran out of their initial allotment of paper.

I thought that was typical TX election gamesmanship. The party who controls the distribution of ballots intentionally underserves areas with high numbers of the opposition party.

Part of the problem is it was not 60 or so but now they found 121 centers with too little paper.

185 I used to shop at the original Micro Center, in Upper Arlington, Ohio. Alas, it is no more.

Also, I just bought an AMD 7950X CPU and motherboard. I didn't put DDR5-6000 ram in it, though. I wanted 128GiB and 32GiB dimms apparently don't come that fast, so I had to settle for 5600.

I'm happy with it, mostly. I think I got a bad video card and the motherboard's built-in video works okay except coming out of the screen saver. Probably some weird Linux thing.

Holy cow. I can't believe that. There is a lot of dark money or some other quid pro quo going on.

Even if the hotel dramatically cut back services, how is it that they can amortize that lower rack rate?

OK. Depending on the router you can block the MAC address instead of the IP.

Because they like having all the permits they need to operate.

189 So, now that the federal gov't is "tracking" unvaccinated people via coding when they visit the doctor, how long before they are going to be quietly denied regular treatments for anything A-Z? How long before they are treated like 2nd class citizens regarding any health issue that crops up? This is an outrage.

Exactly. You never know where it's coming from, or what it will be, but I can guarantee it's coming... the universe hates stability.

House Republicans aren’t ready to forgive and forget on pandemic mandates and closures

More from Rachel Roubein:

But among activist Republicans, immense resentment persists at government policies aimed at curbing the pandemic, such as vaccine mandates, school closures and mask requirements. And that’s shaping up to be a significant part of the GOP’s messaging as anger bubbles up among potential Republican presidential contenders and newly empowered House Republicans.
