The wreck of the Eduard Bohlen,
which went aground in a dense fog in 1909
off the Skeleton Coast of Namibia.
The wreck now lies 1,300 feet from the shoreline.

A little information about the Skeleton Coast:

The Skeleton Coast is the northern part of the Atlantic coast of Namibia and south of Angola from the Kunene River south to the Swakop River, although the name is sometimes used to describe the entire Namib Desert coast. The indigenous San people (formerly known as Bushmen), of the Namibian interior called the region "The Land God Made in Anger", while Portuguese sailors once referred to it as "The Gates of Hell".

On the coast, the upwelling of the cold Benguela current gives rise to dense ocean fogs (called cassimbo by the Angolans) for much of the year. The winds blow from land to sea, rainfall rarely exceeds 10 millimetres (0.39 in) annually, and the climate is highly inhospitable. There is a constant, heavy surf on the beaches. In the days before engine-powered ships and boats, it was possible to get ashore through the surf but impossible to launch from the shore. The only way out was by going through a marsh hundreds of kilometres long and only accessible via a hot and arid desert.

The area's name derives from the whale and seal bones that once littered the shore from the whaling industry, although in modern times the coast harbours the skeletal remains of the shipwrecks caught by offshore rocks and fog.[3] More than a thousand such vessels of various sizes litter the coast, notably the Eduard Bohlen, Benguela Eagle, Otavi, Dunedin Star and Tong Taw.

The name "Skeleton Coast" was coined by John Henry Marsh as the title for the book he wrote chronicling the shipwreck of the Dunedin Star. Since the book was first published in 1944, it has become so well known that the coast is now generally referred to as Skeleton Coast and is given that as its official name on most maps today.

16 Yeah, any time I see old photos of people traveling by airship, I find myself wishing they were still around.

The only real drawback to airships is speed, they aren't particularly fast. But if you take them as super luxury cruisers instead of high speed transport, they'd be fine. Yeah it takes you a day to get where you are going instead of hours but its like being in a yacht.

There are companies trying to do this and it might work, depending on the economy. Cost more than you or I are likely to afford though.

CRT, in reference to the last thread, I think Maturin's accent would have been more English than anything, since anyone in his position would have found it socially necessary not to sound too foreign.

In fact, I just read the 6th book where an American doctor is running down the Irish to Maturin's face and Aubrey (whacked out on meds at the time) breaks in to tell him he is Irish, and the guy just about dies of embarrassment. Funny, and apparently the doc never suspected a thing from talking to him.

The first five seasons that were made by an independent TV station are good; and the next five seasons after it was bought out by our leftist CBC are good too even though they do have the p.c. idea of a female City Coroner.

The latest seasons -- 11 to 15 -- have too much feminist, black woke crap in them even if there are some individual good episodes in 11 & 12 but I stopped watching in season 13.

84 That castle is beautiful. I've never been to Europe. I'm an old Jarhead and my paid overseas trips were SE Asia and Japan. I was going to take some leave and visit Finland via military hops and Sabena, but the Old Man kinda talked me out of it "why do you want to go there when you know why we left". He was pretty sick at the time so it's a good thing I didn't go. Now, as things come to a close, I could probably afford a trip but I might as well go to Yemen or Algeria.

85 Neuschwanstein is not really a castle, as in a defensible fortress, its more one of those fantastical mansions built to look kind of castle-like. Its a beautiful fairy tale but is it a castle?
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 26, 2023 07:46 PM (0hOvj)

Historically, real castles had a run from the 11th century to the 15th century. Then someone invented the siege cannon and it was all over for them.
Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at January 26, 2023 07:47 PM (guGkK)

It's not a castle. But look--even if Ludwig II went a little crazy and nearly spent Bavaria into bankruptcy (and I'm sure that had nothing to do with his "''suicide""), I gotta admire his taste and his appreciation for architectural beauty. A century later, the thing would probably have been built out of concrete and steel and been...ugh...abstract.

88 Yeah, any time I see old photos of people traveling by airship, I find myself wishing they were still around.

--------------------------

The real thing that ended the zeppelin era was that they tended to be blown like crazy in storms and hit things and get smashed into the ground. The US had a disaster with the Akron, the Brits with the R-101, and of course the Hindenburg catching on fire.

Once heavier than air craft could carry people comfortably they were a lot more durable, and float planes could even make it airfields not needed for many routes across the big oceans.

89 I might suggest Rothenburg ob der Tauber as well (or in lieu of) the castle. It is a surviving Medieval walled city. Also has the Kriminal museum, with very interesting implements of torture. Iron Maiden (actual examples quite rare) (Dude!)

The concept of a walled city was kind of interesting. You had to pay to live there (taxes) biut afforded protection from roving mobs and highwaymen.

Note well how our perverted leaders have inverted this arrangement. No walls, let the invaders in, and you keep paying for it.

And there was a buxom redhead involved. *Wistful sigh*

In one of the other books, where they're visiting Australia, Maturin skewers an English lobster on the Governor's front steps. Which the lobster had passed some remarks about the Irish, as Killick would say.

When Rome was strong, towns got in the habit of not having walls for a few centuries. When that began to wane the first public improvement was to tear up buildings and put up walls, then to move everyone to a new, smaller place up on a hilltop nearby.

The proximate cause, is because nobody in non .military government - politicians - has to undergo or pass any sort of background check. No SF46 or any of that jazz.

Somewhere along the way, some clown decided that, by virtue of winning an election, this person has been "deemed" to have passed a background check, or some twaddle like that.

Bullshit. Everyone who wants to run for public office gets the big green weenie background check, and crawl around up their ass with a microscope.

Not many of the degenerates who've infested the body politic like ticks could ever pass a standard background check.

They should be drug tested as well. Everything we subject our military personnel to, they should get it as well.

125 Actually only principals (elected officials) have background checks waived. And the rationale is the same (well, partly) as for the president having plenary classification/declassification authority.

The accountable elected officials in our system were/are supposed to be the decision-makers, the ones in charge.

Having their access to information controlled by unaccountable exec branch personnel ... obviously no bueno, in principle. So, there we are. AFAIK, all staff/horse holders/hangers on working for elected principals are subject to regular background checks etc for access to classified.

135 Crash of the R-101 - they were flying at about 1000 ft.

At 02:00 the watch was changed, Second Officer Maurice Steff taking over the command from Irwin. R101 was at this point "flying heavy",[citation needed] relying on dynamic lift generated by forward airspeed to maintain altitude, estimated by the Board of Inquiry as at least 1,000 ft (300 m) above the ground.[77] At about 02:07 R101 went into a dive from which it slowly recovered, probably losing around 450 ft (140 m).[citation needed] As it did so Rigger S. Church, who was returning to the crew quarters to come off duty, was sent forward to release the forward emergency ballast bags,[67] which were locally controlled. This first dive was steep enough to cause A. H. Leech, the foreman engineer from Cardington, to be thrown from his seat in the smoking room and to wake Chief Electrician Arthur Disley, who was dozing in the switch room next to the chart cabin. As the airship recovered, Disley was roused by Chief Coxswain G. W. Hunt, who then went to the crew quarters, calling out, "We're down, lads" in warning.

156 Wreck of the USS Akron

The Akron was on a mission the night of April 3, 1933, when it took off from its base in Lakehurst, New Jersey (later the site of the Hindenburg disaster). According to Airships.net, the Akron ran into trouble off the coast when strong updrafts and downdrafts buffeted the craft, causing its tail to hit the ocean below. Frank C. McCord, the ship's commander, was no longer able to control it, and the Akron crashed into the water. While pilot error is the generally accepted cause of the crash, we're still not sure exactly what led to such error, with speculation ranging from faulty altimeter readings to McCord accidentally piloting the plane's tail into the water while trying to escape the pull of a downdraft. Seventy-five people died that night — many of whom might have been spared had they not died overnight in the chilly water. So confident was the military in the safety of the great ship that it didn't come equipped with life jackets.

161 Just 10 or so years ago, from the slow lane of southbound I-5, you could still see the remaining bit of asphalt surface and part of the white painted circle for the one of the mooring masts at what was NAAS Del Mar - an ASW dirigible base on the north end of San Diego during WWII. (right next to the race track)

It was since taken out as part of an overall wetland restoration project in the area. All the Japanese sub action after February '42 was much further north, off OR/WA and BC. I think there was some ASW dirigible activity up there too? So the boys at Del Mar had a pretty quiet war I think.

The longsword bearers had to keep wider spacing so it would usually be 2 on 1 at some point in the line. The free guy would skewer the dude attacking his buddy. Phalanxes were fairly easy meat by the time they met them because they could close inside the spearpoints using the shield then the dude would have to drop it. He did have his own sword, but he wasn't expert and had no shield.

I assume this is actually meant for my post, but if we were to use martial artists as an example, they don't make for a good army. Conventionally soldiers trained to fight in formations receive no particular training for duels.

Various more disorganized tribes tend to focus very heavily on duels as part of asserting status and prowess.

Or if we were to use another analogy, Tae Kwon Do is a proper martial arts for duels and boxing is a very watered down near martial arts. But if you force them to operate by boxing rules the person who practices Tae Kwon Do would lose.

241 Public Service Announcement about a topic in the previous thread: Iodized Salt.

No pure edible salts contains iodine. Iodized salt is produced by spraying edible salt with a potassium iodate or potassium iodide solution. Typically, then dextrose is added as a stabilizer to prevent potassium iodide from oxidizing and evaporating. Anti-caking agents such as calcium silicate are also commonly added to table salt to prevent clumping.

Sea salt and Himalayan salt and all other edible salts do not naturally contain iodine. If iodine is added, it will labeled as containing iodine.

Eh, they're just sabers. Nicely made sabers, but they aren't magical and supernatural. Katanas have gotten this overblown aura of mystique and power but they're not materially better than a similarly-made arming sword (and yes, they had folded steel and damascus in medieval Europe). The designs are what make the difference; better at some things, worse at others.

I am far from an expert and have never wielded an actual sword in any manner, but from my observation it appears that sabers are the ultimate lightly- or un- armored sword design.

Sure, but the Gauls had asked Ariovistus to help them with a tribal scuffle shortly before and the lot of them couldn't get him to leave. The strongest Gallic Tribe the Helvetii were bugging out to the Atlantic coast to get away when Caesar got in the way in his first year. After defeating them he took a quick march into the Rhineland area to toss the Germans out, and after that it was Caesar that the Gauls couldn't get to leave.

Given that the Germans had wiped out three large Roman armies virtually to the man in the several decades before JC was born, and Marius was elected consul 5 times in a row to deal with them is also good evidence that Germans at least were nothing to sniff at. Romans still remembered Brennus the Gaul capturing Rome a few hundred years before that. The leader that ended the threat of both peoples was a big deal.

There's only so much spin Caesar could put on the Gallic wars. His enemies were looking for something actionable the whole time.

378 What I'd like PV to focus on: sex and drug stings of politicians, and at conventions like WEF, CFR, defense contractor trade shows, bankers, etc.

On YT, there are a hundred little groups doing pedo stings on bubbas and retards, and they have more targets than they can handle. No reason PV can't do the same thing, scaled up to the elites.

Scientists can't explain how bubbles work.

It's all pretend. It's all meaningless. The researchers get grant money, and the people handing out grant money get control of the researchers and ultimately the population.

There can be no fixing anything because we can't even explain the most basic interactions of bubbles in water, much less the dynamics of the entire earth from the molten core to the vacuum of space.

I don't think the location of the Bohlen has anything to do with climate change or continental drift. It's only been a little over 100 years since it went aground.

More like high storm surge moved it further inland across a flat, low lying coast. 1300 feet isn't that far from the sea.
