Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ace of Spades Pet Thread, January 28Hello, This is a photo of a mummified cat. I took it at the Ramses II exhibit. There were several of these. Didn't see any dogs. There were also lots of Egyptian art featuring cats, even a cat seated under the throne of queen Nefertiti. Egyptians esteemed cats from at least 5,000 years ago, says Jstor. Felines, believed to be domesticated first in Egypt, were held in such high regard that anyone who killed a cat, even by accident, was in turn sentenced to death, according to National Geographic. In a time long before scientifically-based agricultural techniques, anything that could be done to preserve the food supply was very important indeed. Cats, of course, are natural hunters who would have been protecting grain stores by eliminating rodents. There is further evidence, however, that the Egyptians recognized cats' value as protectors of households -- against rodents, yes, but also against venomous snakes. . Theologically, the goddess Bast (sometimes called Bastet) was depicted as a cat, but Antonietta Catanzariti, curatorial fellow of the Smithsonian's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, says it's incorrect to say the Egyptians worshiped cats. "What they were [actually] doing was associating cats to specific deities because of their attitude, how they were behaving in the natural world," . . Though trying to convince a modern cat that it isn't actually divine might be daunting.Cats have quick reflexes: There is a snake encounter with an ordinary kitty in the thread. Plus, kitties take on sweet potatoes and printers, etc.! This is Rita a 10 year old beagle mix. She's an owner surrender. We don't know the circumstances. She looks like a real sweetheart. I will meet her next week. She certainly does look like a sweetie. Thanks for sending in such interesting content for today's Pet Thread! We had to put down an old cat yesterday, and will be burying him today. Prayers for Publius' old mama, who misses him. He's been a fixture for 12 years or more, since he showed up with a too-tight collar around 2010. Publius had to work his cat-whisperer charm to win his trust and remove that collar.
RIP Sandy. Posted by: Miley, okravangelist at January 28, 2023 03:25 PM (Mzdiz) 3

I got a package of squeakers from Amazon this week, and set about to replacing squeakers in some of the dogs' toys.
Sarge has an old leather glove that he likes to play with. I put a squeaker in it and tied it up good with some waxed string, and he didn't let go of it for two days, even after that squeaker stopped working. But now, since he sat beside me watching me sew them into things, he knows Where The Squeakers Come From, and keeps going to the sewing room and barking at the closet where they are stored. I'll replace it again this evening. They're so funny. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at January 28, 2023 03:40 PM (OX9vb) 20
8 not sure what you have tried thus far, but obviously making it inviting with toys, chewy treats etc. lots or praise when the puppy explores it, even if it’s just a head popping in. Don’t close the door right away during the explore phase. Treat, and even feed in the crate to start. When you start to close the door, only open when the puppy is calm and not in response to howling, etc. Don’t put the crate away from everyone in a dark corner of the house, even though we are inclined to want it out of our way. It will make it more stressful for the puppy to be banished to the hinterlands and be in Jalil.
The other thing to work on is the dog going where you want them to, a cot, a corner, wherever. Once that starts to be a thing, you can use the command to get them in the crate. Ultimately you will be able to tell the puppy to crate up (our command was go to jail for the crate). Hope that helps. Posted by: Piper at January 28, 2023 03:41 PM (ZdaMQ) 21
I'm still trying to figure out my crazy pup. She doesn't dance around waiting for food like a normal dog, even if she's starving. Nope, she waits elsewhere knowing I'm putting food in her bowl. Then, she comes over after a few minutes to give me some thanks, then goes off to eat. She won't eat if I'm in the same room, and if I walk into the kitchen when she's eating she'll usually stop until I leave.

Posted by: NR Pax at January 28, 2023 03:34 PM (q+IM3) 9 months is still plenty young. Has the pup had a bad experience with crates boxes that you know of? My take would be to just leave it with the door open, and put treats in. Sit with the pup and put treats in, leaving the door open and just being company, allowing them to come and go as they please. It's natural for them to have a "den", so as long as they learn it's a safe place - a no scold zone - they'll learn to love it. All I have to say is "back in the box" and she knows a treat is forthcoming and she'll get a nap for a bit, with another treat when the door opens. Crate training tip (maybe you're already doing it).
Make the crate part of their daily environment, that way the sight of it doesn't cause anxiety. Leave it around on the floor, open, put some treats inside, maybe a hot water bottle. Posted by: gourmand du jour at January 28, 2023 03:42 PM (jTmQV) 23

Posted by: Piper at January 28, 2023 03:41 PM (ZdaMQ) My breeder suggested feeding in the crate, I never found that necessary but the more used to it they get the better. The door closing should come much later in the process. You're right, it should be out and in the middle of the family activity. Posted by: That Northern skulker at January 28, 2023 03:42 PM (VdGjU) I've been told by many that dogs really don't have a concept of time passage. Meaning they don't really know if you've been gone 10 minutes or 2 hours. But I do think they start to become bored after they've napped enough. With the advent of these awesome bluetooth cameras, you can keep an eye on your pooch and even give them snacks remotely. It's fun to watch them when they're on their own. I watch my dog in the backyard, and if it looks like she's about to get into something, I'll say "cookie" over the intercom and she stops instantly and comes running! I don't know if the Ramses II tour is done, but if you want to go, go early. It gets crowded toward the end of the run. Know that there are no artifacts from the tomb of Ramses II there, they've all been stolen thousands of years ago. The artifacts are from the period of Ramses I and II reign. Lots of hieroglyphic art, mummies, gold, jewels, sarcophagi, etc.

We call our dog's crate "Cratesville" (population: 1). All we have to say is "Cratesville," and he hops right in. If we're being uncivilized and eating in front of the TV, I don't even need to say anything; he knows where he's going (otherwise he'd be snatching bites off the coffee table).

Our 3 year old corgi, we believe a little small for the breed, weighed close to 27 pounds six weeks ago when we put her on half rations.
Half being only one cup dry kibble per day, plus maybe two small treats. So now she is in fighting trim and about 23.5 pounds. We're hesitant to put her back on the two cup per day diet. Posted by: Mr Gaga at January 28, 2023 03:57 PM (KiBMU) 44

🐕 Amazing Daisy was up at 6:59am, standing by my bed. Sometimes, I get up, she goes back to her bed. Lately I've been getting up at 6:45 as a defensive measure — she actually stays in her bed while I get up, dressed, and start food & coffee. Never had a pet quite like that. Anybody have any experience with shock-collar training? We have been given one, but haven't been using it. Only really need to train her not to jump the wall and go out in the cattle pasture, because otherwise she stays around the living acreage. She gets that wild notion, and won't come back until she's got her ya-yas out, as we say. 😸 Ony the cat sends her hellos to the pet thread, too. That's my report. Now to read the post & comments! Some of the shock collars have a vibrate option. You use that first as a warning. I tried one for Jake, to try and stop the barking. But I think the previous owners used one as he freaked out when I put it on.

I have a new dog, Chica. Someone dumped another dog out on the ranch. She's a little 15lb terrier mix. She's very friendly, dog and people socialized, potty trained but won't listen to anything. Huge prey drive, takes off through the mud after squirrels.
Poor thing was from the pound. They microchipped her. The vet gave me the owners name and I called the lady and her reply when I asked if she was missing a dog was, which dog? People disgust me. Long story short the microchip is in my name now. I've been watching a lot of training videos. The best thing I've heard so far is dogs understand two things, they can do something always or never. That's really helpful, I haven't given in to some things, even though I really want to. Posted by: CaliGirl at January 28, 2023 04:21 PM (XV/hy) 60
I am laughing at the dogs who won’t eat in front of people. My Doberman, who was / is the smartest dog ever, felt like she should eat with us. She would pick up her bowl, carry it to wherever we were and eat there. She just picked up on things so fast, she was incredibly well trained, plus had all kinds of tricks. She was the poster child for obedience training. The only bad thing she did was if she was in a down stay and it was not close to us, she would Army crawl over. Still down, just not the best stay. She was dog napped by my ex, I assume she is still with him. Jerk.

Saw a bobkittuh in the wild once. Well, along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Was on a hunt and was in kittuh crouch and move mode, crossing the road. I had stopped. It must have lost track and stopped. It looked around, saw me in my car and, well, didn't give a shit. Just started sniffing and looking, finally caught the scent of whatever it was hunting and slowly off it went. Didn't even care about the red Honda stopped in the road. I was taking pictures on my camera. They didn't come out as nice as I'd like. I was maybe 10-15 feet away. I may send them here someday.

I was afraid he would forget me but he didn't. Sometime next week - I hope - Bing and I will be East Bound and Down in my newly re-transmissioned Jeep.
Then he will have to adjust to our new home in Greenville. My new place has a little balcony. I'm looking for some kind of enclosure so he can sit on the balcony and watch cat tv without becoming an escapee. It's been a rough month or so, but Bingley hugs make everything better. Afternoon, folken,
I haven't watched the snake vs. bobcat video yet; I'll get to it a little later. It sounds fascinating. My two feline thugs are doing well. Dagny the brown torbie Siberian is galloping around playing with everything that she can move. She's bright enough, very alert, and is not deaf; but she does not respond to her name despite my using it gently (when I yell at her, I call her "Cat," "You," or "Dammit") and while she's eating or I'm petting her. I don't expect her to come to me, but I'd think she'd at least look at me. All my cats, even the none-too-bright Oreo, knew the sound of their names. Stirling the great black kitten may already be 10 lbs. at 10.5 months. He does know the sound of his name and will often come trotting from the living room to join me on the bed so he can nuzzle and knead. He plays with Dagny and with toys, but is settling down a little, thank God. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 28, 2023 04:30 PM (omVj0) 65

Shock collars are kinder than choke chains, but learn how to use them. It’s warning buzz, then zap. Not zap zap zap zap zap, turn it up, zap zap zap, etc. Otherwise you will get a dog that is neurotic.
Soon you only need a warning buzz, and after that, you only need to put the collar on. Sometimes you just need to pick up the remote. 😀. They don’t hurt the dog if you have the right size and it’s fitted correctly (tight). You don’t leave it on, just for training sessions. If you haven’t ever trained a dog with one, I strongly suggest working with a reputable trainer who will show you how to use them appropriately. When I lived in a rural area, a juvenile cat used our pet door to move in with us and our two cats and two dogs. Sadly, she had the FIV and only lived a year or so, but during the summer months she would bring home a snake and deposit in our basement every month.

Miley, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I've lost more than a few cats, but it never gets easier. You're prepared ahead of time (you think), as I was with the late Chekov last year, but then there is this sudden hole in your world.
I make it a point to speak of my late cats exactly the way I did when they were alive. No whitewashing of their memory -- no "He was the best cat ever" when said cat was a holy terror, for example. It's a way to honor them and keep their memory green, I guess. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 28, 2023 04:35 PM (omVj0) 70
Mentioned earlier, my female cat died this week. It was peaceful enough, I think. I wasn't sure she'd make it to our latest move, but she did, and last week was more or less her usual self. Demanding attention, getting right in my face, plopping down in the crook of my arm, purring loudly as she slept.
She crawled under my bed Monday evening, and died quietly. I have her remains back already, a nice solid urn, next to my boy, who we had to put down about a year ago. I have two others in boxes, with their ashes inside. I think I'll get them urns too, create my own little cat mausoleum here. Second greatest kitty of all time is buried at our house, three houses ago. And I'm here, getting not much done today, listening to music..... At the same time he's not frightened of the sound of the vacuum cleaner. Weird. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 28, 2023 04:37 PM (omVj0) 73
Hey horde,
Any suggestions on how to train a new to us 9 month old puppy to go in to a crate without a fight? The crate is appropriate in size. Posted by: Pete Bog at January 28, 2023 03:31 PM (/yVB I'd try bribery.. a treat he gets only in the crate. Posted by: Oldcat at January 28, 2023 04:38 PM (eoQWY) 74
Does anyone have any tips for walking on a leash without pulling?
I've been just stopping or changing direction if there isn't slack on the leash. She also will want to go smell something and she puts her brakes on and refuses to go. I end up picking her up. Posted by: CaliGirl at January 28, 2023 04:39 PM (XV/hy) 75
Some of the shock collars have a vibrate option. You use that first as a warning. I tried one for Jake, to try and stop the barking.
Notsothoreau We did have the collar on her and tried the "beep" function. Amazing how alert she suddenly became. Barking — Daisy missed the coyote howl at about 5am. Too distant, and she was sleeping too deeply. Many's the night we wake up to the machine-gun blast of her furious barking at coyotes. Can't really blame her - she is our defender. We have learned to just endure until she quits. Good (yaaawwwnnnn) doggie. Posted by: mindful webworker - snakes have no home here at January 28, 2023 04:39 PM (P+TmF) 76

Had a bobcat in my fenced backyard once. I was standing at my kitchen sink and saw it out the window. Thought it was giant kitteh until it suddenly jumped several feet and caught a squirrel. It then jumped over the fence and off to the woods with its catch.

I 100% second every bit of Piper's advice about e-collars (AKA shock collars). I was very hesitant about using one but our trainer reassured us. It's been a game changer in our training of Luna.
The one we have has a tone, vibrate, and "stim," as most trainers prefer to call it. Luna gets No then a vibrate and if that doesn't work, a stim. After a few weeks of training, I haven't had to use the stim in months and only use the vibrate a few times a month. Best part is she is a much calmer dog in addition to being more obedient. I think she likes knowing precisely what we don't want her to do. Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at January 28, 2023 04:46 PM (fTtFy) 84

I'm sorry for your loss as well. Posted by: CaliGirl at January 28, 2023 04:41 PM (XV/hy) Thank you, I know people who decide to never get another pet, because this is too hard. I get it, but don't understand it. If that makes sense. Meanwhile, my big boy is laying down at my feet now, belly exposed, without a care in the world. Extra love for him and his little brother this week... Posted by: BurtTC at January 28, 2023 04:47 PM (M2qSa) 85
Snake vid: Depends on the temp. Depending where it was, April might have been chilly, and that will definitely affect the speed of the snake. That said, cats have excellent reflexes (most of the time).
One Exception: There was a car parked by a trailer. I was coming up one side (between car and trailer) and my brother was coming up the other side. The cat saw me first, started to go away from the trailer, then saw my brother and SMACK!, right into the trailer. Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at January 28, 2023 04:47 PM (ynpvh) 86
Over the past 25 plus years Mrs. E and i have had probably a dozen cats. They were all good kittys. I remember them all. Funny, I can't remember how many trucks I've owned.

Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at January 28, 2023 04:46 PM (fTtFy) That's an important point. The dog who knows the boundaries, and who enforces them is much happier. They don't have to think for themselves. Posted by: BurtTC at January 28, 2023 04:49 PM (M2qSa) 90
If you haven’t ever trained a dog with one [shock collar], I strongly suggest working with a reputable trainer who will show you how to use them appropriately.
Posted by: Piper Thanks, Piper. Good advices. We have a lead on a good local trainer, but we have been too Meanwhile, Daisy has been learning well about most things. The best thing I've heard so far is dogs understand two things, they can do something always or never. Posted by: CaliGirl So true. "Sometimes" qualifier is a hard one. Like, don't race around the house squeaking the squeaky ball when MiladyJo is still sleeping. Daisy started squeaking this morning and I managed to get her to work on a non-squeaky instead. set about to replacing squeakers in some of the dogs' toys.… Dash my lace wigs! Never thought about putting new squeakers in old toys. Of course, most of the toys are shredded and un-stuffed, so it wouldn't work. I've seen the Bobcat versus snake video before. The cat shows some familiarity on handling snakes, which explains how it can handle with the very fast strike of a rattler.

Jake just misses visitors. We had people over all the time when my husband was alive. And there was a lot of activity during the move. But now, there's just the mailman and UPS guy to look forward to. He's been to the lake today and then to the store. I took him outside for awhile (and it's cold put there) but he's still bored. I've thought about another dog but he gets jealous when I pet the cat.

I miss my Lizzie immensely. The bond went strong both ways.
Probably won't be another pup, wife cannot bring herself to put up with one, she plain doesn't want another dog and has no issue saying so. I'll grudgingly honor her wish, I suppose, she's much too important to me to mess up our relationship. But it hurts. Posted by: irongrampa at January 28, 2023 05:01 PM (KATBx) 97
Dogs do really miss us when we're gone. My family's Airedale Lady really didn't like being left alone at home when the humans of the family went to work or school. She would always be sad and/or resentful. But she would always greet us when we got home. For me it was an abbreviated greeting sometimes as letting her out of the house meant a much-needed bio break.

Just glad it moved on, not to be seen again! =========== Congrats, you have seen one of the most common cryptid creatures in the Main 48 USA, a black colored mountain lion. They have been reported in actual and historical ranges of the Mountan Lion (mostly in the eastern states), although reports are discounted by authorities and academians alike since NO such color creature has ever been described by scientists. Posted by: exdem13 at January 28, 2023 05:08 PM (W+kMI) Aren't they just. When I called CO Wildlife to let them know there was a *big* (head came to second rail of three rail fence when sitting, 2/3 the length of a fence post when laying) dark cat that had sauntered through the neighborhood 20 minutes after a herd of elk, they tried to tell me we (6 of us) had seen a *bear* because there was no way anyone could have released a semi-pet exotic since that would be illegal. I frequently see posts from Jewells about senior dogs. My wife isn't wild about seniors, they don't stay long enough. But, when I have a few rare, spare bucks it would be nice to be able to support her efforts. Altho that senior beagle is tempting, our beagle boy seems to react better to other beagles than to most other dogs.
