Reason: FaceBook Acted as the Government's Censorship Bureau, Too

Muh Private Corporations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) played a direct role in policing permissible speech on social media throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Confidential emails obtained by Reason show that Facebook moderators were in constant contact with the CDC, and routinely asked government health officials to vet claims relating to the virus, mitigation efforts such as masks, and vaccines.

...

The Facebook Files, which were obtained by Reason as a result of the state of Missouri's lawsuit against the Biden administration, reveal that the CDC had substantial influence over what users were allowed to discuss on Meta's platforms: Facebook and Instagram.

[I]n May 2021, CDC officials began routinely vetting claims about COVID-19 vaccines that had appeared on Facebook. The platform left it up to the federal government to determine which assertions were accurate.

Facebook's moderator notes that some of the [claims flagged by the government for review] "would already be violating"--an implicit admission that the CDC's opinion on the other claims would be a deciding factor in whether the platform would restrict such content. Facebook was clearly a willing participant in this process; moderators repeatedly thanked the CDC for its "help in debunking."

Claims vetted by the CDC included whether "COVID-19 is man-made." The CDC told Facebook that it was "theoretically possible, but extremely unlikely."

For months, it was Meta policy to prohibit users from asserting that the pandemic may have originated from a lab leak....

By July 2021, the CDC wasn't just evaluating which claims it thought were false, but whether they could "cause harm."

[I]n November, the Food and Drug Administration granted emergency authorization for children to receive Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. Meta proudly informed the CDC that it would remove false claims--"i.e. the COVID vaccine is not safe for kids"--from Facebook and Instagram. Meta also provided the CDC with a list of new claims about vaccines and asked whether the government thought they could "contribute to vaccine refusals."

Once again, asking the government -- its superior, its boss -- whether or not it should censor citizen speech.

...

It's important to consider the ramifications. Meta gave the CDC de facto power to police COVID-19 misinformation on the platforms; the CDC took the position that essentially any erroneous claim could contribute to vaccine hesitancy and cause social harm.

Meta also thought the CDC should know that people were making fun of Anthony Fauci.

Meta also kept the CDC apprised of criticism of Anthony Fauci, the White House's COVID-19 advisor and head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). One email warned the CDC that Facebook users were mocking Fauci for changing his mind about masking and double-masking. The CDC replied that this information was "very helpful."

Why was this relevant? Perhaps making fun of Anthony Fauci, who Represents Science, "caused harm" and increased vaccine hesitancy as well?

Robbie Soave, though a doctrinaire Muh Corporations libertarian, is honest enough to note that while Meta was being so very helpful to the federal government, their helpfulness might have been prompted by duress: The government was threatening them weekly with punitive regulation if they did not censor speech as the government demanded.

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield says social media 'should be held accountable' for publishing vaccine misinformation and is 'reviewing' Section 230 amid Biden's spat with Facebook

* White House comms director Kate Bedingfield said social media companies should be held accountable for publishing misleading info on vaccine

* She also said the administration is reviewing Section 230

* Section 230 gives tech companies blanket legal protections for content posted on their platforms

* 'We're reviewing that and certainly they should be held accountable,' she said

David French, who is totally not an undisclosed paid lobbyist and soulless shill for Monopoly Tech, calls this mere "jawboning" by the government and chides anyone who thinks this is a case of the government drafting Muh Corporations into the position of government agents that "the government has robust free speech rights too."

Unlike citizens!

Weird, David French is always telling us it's corporations and the government who have free speech rights, while the people actually granted free speech rights by the Constitution -- that is, people -- don't.

He was just hired as a columnist for the New York Times so you know his ethics are impeccable.

Oh, and you also know his credentials as a True Conservative are impeccable as well.

Foreign search engines can be better. I have better luck with Qwant than with the domestic search engines, but even it is spotty. The Russian Yandex plays games, too, but they are playing an anti-Western game, so you can often find a lot more information from Western sources on it. Good luck finding anything critical of Russia, though.

This will become the norm. If you're looking for real information, you'll need to get it from a source that hates the party involved. If you want information about America, get it from Russia. If you want information on Russia, get it from America or India. If you want information on India, get it from Pakistan.

It will still be manipulated the negative will be surfaced first, but your search will at least return hits.

I actually do not disagree. Hear me out:

I believe in free speech. The thing is, ace is trying to run a business and have a life here. To maintain a community. He lets us get away with a whole shitload of edgy crap. For the most part, he lets people take their shots at cobs or himself and usually will engage, but not ban because people are arguing.

The bright shiny line is things that will either destroy the community (like posting racial slurs, even aside from the monetization, not many would want to wade through N bombs or what have you) or stuff that will destroy his platform legally because of deplatforming. Would it be better if we could not communicate with each other at all? because that is what we would be staring down the barrel of.

Also, consider this: if you would not say it at a well armed and attended MoMe, then you probably cannot say it here (the edgy insurrectiony stuff notwithstanding- that probably flies MORE there.)

Yeah, no. This is where the all or nothing logical fallacy comes about. You can also add the ecological fallacy to it. Part of it is the argument that publicly owned companies have the same rights as individuals including speech. Repeatedly, Scotus has ruled that is not so (see regulation of commercial speech for example) and even recent free exercise cases (Hobby Lobby case) recognize the difference as does the commerce clause jurisprudence in NLRB v. Jones and Laughlin Steel.

Then, you have the utility feature added to it as generally available infrastructure has been considered a marketplace rather than individual expression so like broadcasting, the FCC can regulate as to the common interest any licensed broadcaster.

So, essentially Ace or his designated COBs to censor opinions that are likely to cost him money directly by driving off sponsors, attracting expensive government investigations, and generally making a nuisance of themselves without the same effects as if Google bans someone from all its various platforms.

For the last few years the people of Western countries have been voting to replace the elites ruining their countries.

The first problem was propaganda confusing them...look at, for example, how the majority of Obama voters thought the Republicans controlled congress in 2006-8 and were "voting them out".

But the bigger problem now is that with rampant election theft there is no way to peacefully replace them or even send them signals that the people disagree with them...

++++
The distrust of elections process is one part of it. The censorship is another. Airing of grievances is increasingly difficult, so social movements are harder. Petitioning the government is pointless because the government is unaccountable.

That is a *very* dangerous combination because it results in an intelligence vacuum, which prevents the system from correcting. Even if the government powers *wanted* to course-correct - and some very well might - they are increasingly *unable* to do so because they don't know what's wrong. They don't know what's wrong because they censor dissent.

What this runs the risk of causing is a big blowup all at once, like what happened in Romania. You go from a smooth, functional system where everything is normal to the dictator being shot in a schoolhouse and a total revolution occurring in a matter of days. Nobody sees it coming and the proximal cause/trigger is usually surprising or mundane.

247 >>> 175 Why this incessant obsession with David French on this blog? Who cares about David French? No one I know.

Because it's funny? Ace has legit beefs with Goldberg, French is just for fun.

For a long time, I didn't get the recurring Stelter hate jokes that a lot of people in conservative media do, like Crowder (Tater's stupid face is in the sun in the opener of the show!) or Gutfeld. But it's their show. And now that it happens every time, I can see it for the fun it is.

As for me, I hate French because he once seemed open minded: he championed Romney for pres, as an evangelical who should have traditionally hated Mormons. As a Mormon myself, I warmed to that. In the Trump years, when all the masks fell away, I realized French was just using that to leverage a spot in the conservative grifter inc, first at National Review (the conservative christian case for Romney!) and then a larger spot in the GOPe gravy train. And that French actually liked Romney because they were both kindred spirits in the GOPe swamp.

Because of the personal betrayal I feel from French and Romney, as a Mormon, I HATE French.

Baby carrots ARE inferior regular carrots. They grind down bad ones that wouldn't be suitable for packaging as "normal" carrots so that they can still sell them. IIRC they can get two or three baby carrots out of one bad carrot.

Minimizing the cross-section of damage increases robustness, albeit at the cost of consistency and efficiency.

A man making a bad decision will harm himself (or himself and his family). A city government making a bad decision will harm the whole city. A state government making a bad decision will harm the whole state. A national government making a bad decision will harm the whole country. A world government - G-d forbid - making a bad decision will harm the whole world.

If you don't *have* to make a decision at that higher level (for example: border and citizenship rules, basic rules of order, etc.), you *shouldn't* make decisions at that higher level, even if it would be efficient to do so.
