Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Idiocracy: Another Day, Another Collapse of a Foundational SystemAnd another Bootyjudge triumph. Where do you think he was on vacation this time? And how many more systems can collapse before it all comes down? Essentially the nation is only running due to systems created in the 50s, 60s, and 70s and maintained through the 80s and 90s. They have been left to fallow since then. And now it's all gone to rot. And the "Educated Class" just sits in DEI meetings and debates pronouns and drag show etiquette all day. And the systems and tech from the 50s and 60s and 70s is breaking down, as 40-70 tech does. And our "Educated Class" continues debating pronouns. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration lifted its ground stop order Wednesday morning after suffering a nationwide technical outage causing mass cancellations and delays. The travel chaos was caused by the failure of the FAA's Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system, which alerts pilots and other personnel about airborne issues and other delays at airports across the country. More than 1,000 flights were canceled in the U.S., and more than 6,700 more flights in the U.S. were delayed, as of 11:30 a.m. ET. FAA investigators are continuing to search for the cause of the outage.
I suspect that too. It didn't reassure me that Mayor Pete's tweet included a picture of a mojito beading water in the Cabo sun. Both Democrats and Republicans pointed out Bootyjudge's nigh-interrupted string of failures as Secretary of Vacays. Buttigieg's tenure has been plagued by multiple crises from supply chain snarls to widespread commercial airline delays and he has been criticized for his handling of the issues. Amid the many crises Buttigieg has faced, the former presidential candidate and mayor of South Bend, Indiana -- who President Biden selected to lead the Transportation Department in January 2021 -- has been hit with criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike. The transportation secretary recently came under fire after it was revealed he vacationed in Porto, Portugal, while his agency and the White House were locked in tense negotiations with rail worker unions to avert a strike that could have had a dire impact on the U.S. economy. The Department of Transportation said the vacation was a "long-planned personal trip." Buttigieg was also slammed for his handling of the supply chain crisis in 2021. Throughout the second half of the year, ships were forced to wait off the coast of California due to onshore logjams, as a trucker shortage slowed transportation and rail yards faced massive clogs. Fox News has reached out to Secretary Buttigieg for comment.

In my industry when I first started as a young engineer, there were many “gray beards” who really knew what they were doing and could actually build hardware and software and make it work. This was 29+ years ago. Almost all are now retired and the number of folks who actually know what they’re doing is exceedingly rare. We keep putting out product on inertia acquired from these experts. Lots of hand wavers and talkers around now who couldn’t design or fix a thing. Making collapse inevitable

Let's be honest about ol' Pete's skillset: prior to being mayor (and what was noteworthy about his performance st that? I digress) he was. . . a consultant. A McKinsey consult, then a DC defence shop's consultant.
And it seems that's all he can do: come in, analyze, come up with a bullet list of important-sounding suggestions on how to fix/improve things and then he's done. He cannot lead, he has no experience leading -- he is detached, as consultants are. They are hired to find more work, suggest this additional work, and then charge more money to do this work, which then leads to. . . suggestions for more work. If you've had the pleasure of working with big consulting firm consultants, then you know the drill. They are there to log billable hours, not fix things, not really. And they don't care about your organization. Mayor Pete --> Consultant Pete. Posted by: Lizzy at January 11, 2023 12:31 PM (mqu1M) 239

There is actually a lot of ada used in military aerospace microcontroller firmware and flight computer design. I forget why it was used so much but I think it was something related to fault tolerance and resilience to penetration.
Posted by: banana Dream ------------ From what I remember back in the day, part of it was security by obscurity as the DoD did not promote broader use of Ada, another part was security in the sense that Ada compilers are strict in what they allow to pass regarding memory buffers, and variable types, and so on. I think Ada was partially modeled after Pascal and Modula2 but I could be misremembering. Only saw examples of Ada code and never actually worked with it back when I was doing computer stuff. Back in the early '80's at Ft Lewis in Washington State, the Army had a rebuild center. This was a classic old time factory. They could literally bring in a beat up tank or howitzer and in a couple of weeks, completely rebuild it. I remember a huge bender in there, at least 30 feet long that was used to bend and curve large pieces of metal. I asked the guy giving us a tour, who runs this? He said no one now. The last guy who knew how had retired and no body new had learned to use it.
Today that building is completely vacant. Posted by: Diogenes at January 11, 2023 12:36 PM (anj39) 273

Good morning, y’all. Well my little Mayor Pete has done it again. If anyone has ever been to South Bend for any period of time, no one is surprised by this outcome, except perhaps Biden. I will say it for the 85th time, Pete is truly the nicest person. This is perhaps his downfall, outside of his political affiliation. He couldn’t lead people out of a paper bag because he would be spending the time in focus groups actively listening and affirming the thoughts of everyone in that bag with him, and his plan would try to incorporate the thoughts of every single person in some way, shape or form to validate them. So the plan would be 800 pages long and people would be circling haphazardly in the bag, some might have hands up or even their hair on fire. And then it would change because someone else spoke up. What would never happen is Pete yelling “Shut up, line up single file behind me, right hands grab this rope and march forward toward the light NOW!”

We may be predisposed to spiritual thoughts, but that's on an individual level. Religious behavior engages when we try to share visions of the Ideal. It's simply the social behavior of a cultivated, collective vision, which often gets enforced by stake-holders.
How could be put that away, but by a shared vision of the value of putting that away? If there is any resistance and clapback from the enforcement of that, then we see the behavior to which we derogatively refer as "religion". Posted by: Axeman -------------- Well said. Heard a tale on the news this morning. A young woman stopped at a Twin Peaks in Baton Rouge. In the ladies' room she saw a poster for a drink (she thought) called an Angel Shot. She asked her server what it was, and requested an Angel Shot with a twist of lime. Two cops showed up and issued her a ticket for false use of police resources.
Turns out the notice was actually advising women that they could issue this coded request about an Angel Shot if they felt unsafe with their date. "Angel Shot with lime" meant "Call the police"! But she didn't see that (small white letters on black paper, and she didn't have her glasses on), and the server didn't tell her when asked. But now she's had to pay a fine and is barred from drinking in public for 6 months or something. Lawsuit? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 11, 2023 12:44 PM (J2vNu) 332

Flight delays for organs: Here's why the donation transportation system needs to change In part, "New regulations that were enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks have meant that organs need to travel as freight when they are shipped by air, which extends the time it takes them to get from donor to recipient. They often have to arrive at the airport hours before a flight and can take extra time to be unloaded and get to the transplanting hospital." "Any breakdown in transportation is unacceptable because that means that a patient can't get their organs," United Network for Organ Sharing interim CEO Maureen McBride told USA TODAY. The database is probably small by modern standards, so it might actually be a single computer, perhaps periodically backed up to a second one. I wonder if the main computer died and the backup didn't work, possibly because nobody tested the recovery procedure for a long time. Janet Leigh was the Queen of bullet bras, but I don't think she was as large as that look made her appear to be.

In part, "New regulations that were enacted after the Sept. 11 attacks have meant that organs need to travel as freight when they are shipped by air, which extends the time it takes them to get from donor to recipient. They often have to arrive at the airport hours before a flight and can take extra time to be unloaded and get to the transplanting hospital."
"Any breakdown in transportation is unacceptable because that means that a patient can't get their organs," United Network for Organ Sharing interim CEO Maureen McBride told USA TODAY. Posted by: Lola at January 11, 2023 01:02 PM (p39Z2) Sending such precious and perishable items by common freight is criminally stupid. They should be carried by couriers on chartered business jets. Decades ago, back when I was an employed person, the company I worked for had a division that worked federal projects, one of which was developing the replacement air traffic control systems for the FAA. Based on what was known in other parts of the company it was a classic case of the feddle gummint totally f@#king up. Over many years the designs and specs changed and changed again such that nothing was ever actually built as many dollars flowed from taxpayer wallets.
Based on this event it appears that in the couple of decades since I stopped hearing about this, nothing has changed. Posted by: George V at January 11, 2023 01:41 PM (ugbqN) 586
