Happy Fun Thread!

010323 bob-ross scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Had enough outrage for one day? Do your fists ache from being clenched in balls of rage as your day's last cries of fury die unheard? Well then kick off your shoes, put on your slippers and sweater, and de-stress from the rigors of serious blog readin' with the Happy Fun Thread!

Truth be told, I cannot really decide which political party I dislike more, the Democrats or the Republicans. In a strange sort of way, I actually have some amount respect for the Democrats, because they fight for what they believe in, however retarded that may be, and at least to me seem to win more than they lose. As I write this Thursday, the Republicans having squeaked by with a majority are in disarray over the very first item on their agenda and that is electing a Speaker of the House of Representatives. As I understand the rules, they cannot proceed with any other business until that is settled. Given their general level of incompetence, I almost hope they never elect a Speaker and spare us the next two years of "reaching across the aisle" and "working with their friends" on the left. I'm not sure how much more of their leadership we can stand.

Q: Weasel - aren't you getting yourself worked up over politics on the Happy Fun Thread?
A: Damnit, you're right!

As you know, Mr. O'Spades is on a well-earned vacation, and my directions as a helper-monkey were simply "Do a thread on 1/5 at 6:30". Since I have made it my mission in life to be happy and cheerful despite the constant insults to common sense and decency from the left and the right, I figured it wouldn't hurt to take a short break from the news of the day.

So let's all link arms and with hope and joy in our hearts, skip into the Happy Fun Thread together, shall we?

******

FSJ sez: Lighten up, Francis!

C'mon, man! You can't be angry all of the time, can you? Here are some fun animals. I mean, who doesn't enjoy fun animals? The Science has shown people with pets are happier, live longer, have more friends and are smarter and better looking than pet-less people. Really!

Monkey teaches kitty to eat yogurt

Does your dog bite?

Cats, dogs and monkeys

Speaking of monkeys...

Indoor kitty plays with snow

A BIG indoor kitty!

Kitty raises money

A Kittyman sea shanty!

Not a kitty. Definitely not a kitty

Let's take a break from all the bullshit and enjoy a nice relaxing pause in the outrage. What else besides the collapse of civilization is on your mind?

The Santa Clara Valley used to be the fig capitol of the world. There were fig trees everywhere, and everybody had one in their backyard.

What I didn't know was that they've created a wasp-less self-pollinating fig which explains why a lot of fig products are so shitty these days. Less work, bigger figs, no wasp. That "crunch" is gone, because no momma wasp crawled inside and died so you could eat a fig with some texture. But, you can still get the good stuff in jars from Europe.

148 Listened to some NPR coverage of the McCarthy kerfuffle today, and they had on an expert (!) from The Bulwark! All she did was repeat the ad hominems from the Kevinoids as if it was "analysis", but the hostess kept asking radical stuff like "Can you give us an example of why they don't like Kevin?"

This actually got the Bulwark Wark to expound a bit on how these MAGA types really distrusted the GOP establishment, even though Trump had told them to support him, which forced her to admit they did have some principles, contrary to the fact that she had been going on at great length about what unprincipled narcissists they were!

All in all it was accidentally a halfway decent interview, at least for NPR! I may be dreaming but I feel like the NPR lady came away a little suspicious, contrary to her initial expectations that the Wark was on the side of the angels.

189 Willowed, this was in response to Nova on whether a plurality could elect a speaker. Happened twice in the 1850s as noted by special rule but ultimately hasn't been used since. Current rule requires 218 and 218 is required to change that rule under standing house rules.

Link goes to the formal House Rules Manual and you will find the election of the Speaker discussed on page 14, Section 22. The arrangement of House rules is odd because it begins with the annotated Constitutional powers and then moves into adopted House rules via the first act of the 2021-22 Congress.

Arguably, the tank farm would have been a better target at Pearl than a bunch of old slow battleships. The carriers, thank the Lord, were out at sea when it happened or they would have gotten it leaving the Japanese to run amuck for more than the two years that they did in the Pacific.

256 The POL farm was penciled in for the third wave attack but Nagumo decided he did enough damage and American defenses were getting tougher. So he sailed home before he lost his carriers.

Not hitting that shortened the war by 6 months. Another break for the Americans was that Neosho did not blow up as she was filled with aviation gas.

If the three American carriers had been at Pearl and sunk beyond salvage, it would have left Yorktown in the Atlantic as the only fleet carrier for the US Navy. Hornet was still working up. Essex would not join until the middle of 1943.

Congrats.
Becoming a Grandfather gave me a new lease on life. I was bummed when the kid graduated and went his own way. It seemed like nothing was happening anymore. The house got really large and empty without the neighborhood kids laying about all the time, fridge would even stay full. Wife and I are all "what did we do before the kid?" (I know, thats how we got the kid)
Anyway. Then comes that day... "Dad, girlfriend is pregnant."
"Whatcha gonna do?"
"I can do this."
"I know you can."
2 years later they move into my pad. A year later comes number two.
It's a blast having a 2 and a 6 year old running around though.
Never a dull moment.
I actually like having them in the house. I know where they are. I know they are okay. Rents are through the roof here right now so it looks like they may be here for a bit.

275 Arguably, the tank farm would have been a better target at Pearl than a bunch of old slow battleships. The carriers, thank the Lord, were out at sea when it happened or they would have gotten it leaving the Japanese to run amuck for more than the two years that they did in the Pacific.
Posted by: whig at January 05, 2023 07:17 PM (bDjBG)

Nope on the tanks. There were secret underground tanks being built nearing completion, some were even filled. It isn't easy for the light bombs on the J planes to bust a hole, much less set anything alight. Each tank had a berm so fuel could be reclaimed. Honolulu was full of welders who could have put up temp tanks, or tankers could be parked offshore.

But the Japanese, like the Germans, were indifferent to blind to logistic concerns. Otherwise they'd likely not started, since a third of their trade was carried in hulls owned by Western powers on Jan 6. Essentially they sunk those ships on day 1.

The Nipponese should either have gone all in and sent a third wave to destroy the tank farms (at which the US fleet would have had to retire to the West Coast) or not attacked at all and bypassed the Philippines on the way to the NEI. We were too weak in the Pacific to have done anything about it.

Tank farms is a chimera - no strike could destroy them or force a withdrawal.

The bypass Philippines is more interesting - I tend to think that likely the US would have pitched in regardless - we were already fighting Germans halfway across the Atlantic.

Some of the air forces on PI might have complicated shipping arrangements for the IJN in that case but the troops freed up might have sped up taking DEI. An interesting question is if the pressure to "save" MacArthur in the PI would have compromised the Navy strategy. We had war plans to let the PI die but that might get harder if they remained unattacked.

I think Ace's 20th anniversary of the blog is just around the corner, and I'd love to help out together an anniversary book of some of the highlights over 20 years. I have the ability to put the design side of a book together. But I don't feel I'm the right person to choose the content. I wondered if we could compile the content as a group and then work from there to assemble it.

I know bluebell and weasel have the most experience with making a book for the horde. But it could be a good project for others to help with. I can also post this question in the next book thread if that's a better place.

I'd love a colllection of some of Ace's best writings, hilarious moments, and maybe some of the fun from the comments section, to honor his 20 years of bringing us all together.

416 217 BUT, but, but...
The Japanese were still thinking the battleship had a future in Dec of 1941 which is why they targeted them at Pearl.
=====
This is true. The Imperial Japanese Navy was dominated by Battleship men. Yamamoto was seriously bucking the trend. Remember, it's the IJN that built the largest battleships in the world, while downlisting the Taihou and Unryuu class fleet carriers. Yamamoto's plan to tag Pearl Harbor was based on the shock and awe of depriving the USN Pacific Fleet of its heart and soul, the 8 Standard Plan BBs. The USN made aircraft carriers the backbone of their Pacific Fleet strategy in 1942 because they really had no other choice for capitol ships.

Alan Zimm book on Pearl Harbor attack. "Myths" is in the title, and they keep cropping up I see. Oldcat Johnson is right. l. Leaving aside that a "third wave" was not planned, and probably would have been heavily damaged if not slaughtered (as the torpedo planes in the second wave were, more or less).
=======
Nagumo's objectives as issued for the attack were to make Battleship Row a slaughterhouse, go after as many other ships as possible (CVs get priority), and tear up the USAAF and Navy air bases to prevent counterstrikes. The two strikes pretty much covered it. The drydocks, sub pens, and oil farm were all bonus round objectives. Nagumo decided to take his win and leave, lest Enterprise and Lexington groups showed up with his third strike in the air.

I bought the smallest size available from Logees.com and got figs the first year.

470 The latest Palestinian zoological-related conspiracy theory has Israel outfitting “spy cows” with surveillance equipment to track their movements, according to a piece by the Palestinian Authority’s official daily.

Palestinians have in the past accused Israel of sending genetically engineered sharks into Egyptian waters, “super rats” to infest the Muslim Quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City, and killer Zionist dolphins off Gaza’s shores to attack Hamas frogmen.

Only last week, Britain’s National Education Union (NEU) rehashed a boar-related conspiracy theory originally disseminated by PA President Mahmoud Abbas, who in 2014 insisted that “every night, [Israelis] release wild pigs against us.”

There is even a Wikipedia page titled, “Israel-related animal conspiracy theories.”

In the article published last Tuesday in the PA’s Al-Hayat Al-Jadida newspaper, Rushd Morrar, from Khirbet Yanun in the West Bank, said he had encountered cows “recruited and trained” by Israel.

Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at January 05, 2023 08:02 PM (Vwz3I)

471 “These are recruited and trained cattle, as on the neck of each cow they hang a medallion with an eavesdropping and recording device on it, and sometimes cameras, in order to monitor every detail in Khirbet Yanun large and small,” the newspaper cited Morrar as saying, according to a translation by monitoring group Palestinian Media Watch.

Morrar also claimed that “settlers release herds of wild boars” to destroy Palestinian crops, the newspaper said.

“The settlers’ crimes are diversifying and becoming sophisticated, and the means they employ in their war are unlimited,” he said.

501 When I was in college a group of us went to a drive through for some drinks. I was in the front passenger seat and ordered a limeade. When the clerk handed it to my buddy, the driver, he took a huge drink of it out of the straw before handing it to me. What he didn't know is they had accidentally put cleaning solution in it instead of the limeade flavor ( both in a plastic container) . We didn't know what happened when he started choking , etc. He ended up okay after trip to ER. Of course we all ragged on him about how he won't be taking food/drink that wasn't his anymore.

514 443 In hindsight immobilizing the battle line was the greatest thing to happen to the US Navy.

Second greatest thing? The slugging matches around Guadalcanal that literally got rid of dead weight leadership. Darwinism in action.
========
I'd rather the USN's dead wood was discarded in the Solomons without the carnage that filled Iron Bottom Sound, but failure always has a price. Every plan for every naval war game for the Pacific Fleet in the Thirties tended to end up as "...and then the Battleships let 'em have it." Because if you have 8-10 BBs available, you use them! The CV guys got their chance to call the tune in 1942 and they seized it with both hands. But the final decisive naval battle for Guadalcanal hinged around three battleships.

Morrar also claimed that "settlers release herds of wild boars" to destroy Palestinian crops, the newspaper said.

"The settlers' crimes are diversifying and becoming sophisticated, and the means they employ in their war are unlimited," he said.

Thanks. I would be leaving it out over the winter so Chicago Hardy would do ok in my region, have some sunny microclimates and can protect it in severe freezes like last ten days or so for us.

I thought Chicago hardy simply meant that you could raise it in Chicago--not the actual trade name. Thanks for the other varieties as well.
If I recall rightly, you recently moved to Arkansas. Hope all is well with your move and I recommend raising Arkansas Traveler tomatoes which are a heirloom type. Slow starter but will then crank out tomatoes from July to the first freeze.

Usual problem. Univ of Ark developed the Traveler variety so as not to crack, can germinate from seed, and bear up under hard hot summers. My wife and I are expatriates from Arkansas and pretty much lived all over the state and have family there still.
