Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thomas the Tank Engine and the University System [TJM]At a mathematics education conference previously reported by Campus Reform in which numerous scholars pushed for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI), one speaker stood out by arguing that boys in particular are at a disadvantage in numerous ways in American K-12 education. What is it about our education system that has so much disdain for young men? As the father of two boys early in their education, this does concern me personally. They love to run around and scream and play, and as frustrating as it can be at times for me, it's how they grow. It's a natural state, so even if I'm trying to work from home and I have them both around running around and screaming, I know that demanding that they just sit around quietly is not going to lost too terribly long. They're going to get up, throw things, and just generally be loud. Another thing I've come to appreciate is their desire to be around mechanical things. I had similar obsessions as a boy, but I left the desire to take things apart and put them back together again behind years ago. However, there was a point earlier this year when we brought out some of the elder boy's old toys, a trainset of Thomas the Tank Engine with motorized engines on plastic tracks, something we'd stored away in the attic for at least a couple of years, and both boys were enraptured by it. In fact, it's a common thing to hear from the younger boy these days, "Play trains!" in between bouts of the two beating each other with cardboard boxes, of course. That interest could become something greater in later years if encouraged at home and at school: an interest in general hard sciences or engineering. What would the modern day STEM crowd say to something like that? Probably something like this: [T]he speaker's presentation "did not exemplify appropriate scholarly inquiry and was counterproductive with respect to PME-NA's goal of inclusion from the updated PME-NA equity statement, which includes 'welcoming and making spaces for members of our community that have previously been othered.'" The idea of "othering" interests me because it's become an unalloyed bad thing in discussion these days. I see it as generally a neutral thing with people deciding to create their own in-groups and self-identifying with them while creating distinctions between their own groups with similar interests and features against the rest of the world. A band of friends with their own unique experiences is a good thing to have. It brings people together and unites them. It doesn't necessarily mean that the "other" is evil, just different and not of the in group. Like much in modern culture and language, though, the "other" has become a bastardized version of itself where anything that "otherizes" people is evil...unless that other is white men, of course. What did this person say that pissed off the governing board so much? Quoting the book, the speaker said that "boys are falling behind in school because the educational system is structured in ways that puts them at a disadvantage." Should white boys be actively discouraged from entering STEM fields because of their skin color and sex? Would we say that to a little black girl who loved to play with train sets? Of course not, but the idea of saying that boys belong in STEM pisses off some people, and those people have power. When only the color of your skin matters, does a civilization thrive? When it's a constant battle for intersectionality points, can a civilization grow? I'm not saying my two boys will design the space elevator (*note to self - pressure boys to build space elevator*), but maybe their intelligence, interests, and talents could lead them to gain the skills to build some quality bridges. Or they can just keep hitting each other with cardboard boxes until they die of old age, I guess. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

What is it about our education system that has so much disdain for young men?
They have to destroy masculinity, independence, and skepticism in order for the utopian new world order to be imposed on everyone. That's why all the new action heroes are wimps who get PTSD from saving the world or are weedy geeks, or homosexual. You cannot have a strong, masculine, heroic figure any more (although every once in a while one sneaks in). If there is a strong, heroic figure, they have to be made into a loser, a failure, the butt of every joke, or simply kllled off. It used to be that not all people were supposed to go into higher education. Some people, some guys in particular, just want to work on...stuff. Build stuff, break stuff, fix stuff.
As Mike Rowe would agree, we need more guidance to get boys into skilled trades instead of higher ed. Some guys are more 'bookish' and more interested in sitting, thinking and talking. That's fine but not every boy is like me. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo, food, water at January 04, 2023 01:35 PM (pyVNc) 12

"boys are falling behind in school because the educational system is structured in ways that puts them at a disadvantage."
The first step in this was the outrageous, blatant, ridiculous lie that girls were being ignored and downplayed or oppressed in school. Everyone who ever went to school knew this was horseshit, but in the 90s they managed to convince (or at least, wink wink go along with) the lie in academia and establishment culture. So boys, who already were basically left behind in school, became even more so. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at January 04, 2023 01:36 PM (0hOvj) 19

when my son was a toddler, I bought him a small set of miniature REAL tools (two screwdrivers, pliers, an adjustable wrench, all quite real just small. I sequestered the small also-real hammer lest he retaliate against his sister's depredations in a mortal fashion), and he happily spent hours out in the driveway removing my license plates and putting them back on.
I had to check before going anywhere that they were in fact ON at the moment. He also developed the habit of loosening doorknobs, and when one would come off in my hand, he'd yell "I'll fix it mama!" and come running to put it back on. Related, I just saw where women with advanced degrees who post things online (twitter and similar I assume) are angry because men are linked and people will ask the men to explain it in more relatable terms.
And the women are furious that someone who is better at explaining things is being asked to do the thing that they're good at, because WOMAN, dammit, and you shouldn't ask a man who isn't a Super Science Degree Holder to explain things when she just explained it poorly. Should white boys be actively discouraged from entering STEM fields because of their skin color and sex? Would we say that to a little black girl who loved to play with train sets? Of course not, but the idea of saying that boys belong in STEM pisses off some people, and those people have power.
++++ This is all working toward an equitable distribution of power. Men in general - and white men in particular - historically have held the commanding heights of power and society is structured around the white male worldview and as a result white males are asymmetrically empowered while other groups are marginalized and disempowered. This structural condition *must* be fought in order to bring about an end to historical and contemporary injustice. Encouraging white men to enter STEM fields serves to perpetuate the white male societal structure that was designed by and works for the advancement of those same white men. The only way to achieve equity is for those white men to cede the spaces they illegitimately and unjustly dominate to marginalized groups. Education is a key mechanism to overcome this structural failure, and part of that is encouraging pro-equity changes. Also, Shannara might have been a redress of Tolkien in a character sense, but it wasn't in structure. Tolkien was unique in a lot of ways because it was not about finding an all powerful sword, ring whatever, but rather it was an anti-quest- to destroy the all powerful artifact.
Donaldson was also different in that it was never about finding or destroying anything, it was about being weird, creepy and figuring out how to use said McGuffin. Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at January 04, 2023 01:47 PM (zZu0s) 75

I think one of the reasons we're in the mess we are in this country (and in the western world) is that we stopped shaming, "othering," and ostracizing bad behavior; behavior that degrades the culture. And it Durant preclude compassion, charity, or love.
"Oh, I don't want to judge..." the instruction to not judge is not to throw away all discernment and wisdom. The instruction is to warn us not to think we know if a person deserves heaven or hell... that judgement is for Christ, alone. Posted by: Flyover at January 04, 2023 01:48 PM (Rbu5d) 81

My son is mechanically inclined as opposed to formal schooling, which he barely completed. When he was fourteen years old I bought an old, high-mileage clunker 4-banger so I could teach my daugher (16) to drive a manual transmission and to have transportation for herself and to taxi my son around. As I prepped to change the alternator on it my son asked if he could do it. I handed him a Haynes manual and off he went. Perfect job even unto to tension on the belt. Later went to the Army helicopter fixin' school (don't know what it's official acronym is) and not only is a top notch mechanic, but when he got home he parlayed his computer building skills (I taught him as it's my hobby) into an almost 6-figure job. College? Nah, my daugher went, I paid off her loan as promised to keep her youth as debt-free as possible, and now works in a grade school admin office making less than half her brother's wage. And he never had to listen to a teacher tell him that he was an Other whether it was the wrong sex or color.

There is no good justification. Get them set up in a trade. Even if it all blows up and he fails, you're still better off than sending them to modern higher education. And while there are more than 7 stories, the point is valid: there are only so many ways to tell a story and stories to tell and repeating is not a crime, if you make it yours. Posted by: Elric Blade ---------- To kill the Uniparty, it must first be revealed. If McCarthy becomes speaker via deals with the Democrats, every single GOP congress critter supporting this move via their vote gets smeared with it for the next election as a uniparty hack and fake opposition. I was willing to give voting harder one last shot in 2022 for GOP redemption. Now, I am pretty much on the GOP must die for America to live. Basically, all the Freedom Caucus wanted for McCarthy to become speaker is to allow amendments from the floor that reduced the deficits, votes on securing the border, and so on. McCarthy showed his defiance by refusal because that would upset his corporate Uniparty sponsors. So, given the GOP's continuing support for Ronna, McConnell, and McCarthy, fixing the national party from within is a pointless task because the numbers aren't there to do it. Even if by some miracle DeSantis runs in 2024 and wins, he will have to bow to the national Uniparty and its evil corporate/wealthy donors with its insane agenda to invade the world, invite the world, and screw the citizens of the US. 46 My son is 16, and the debate whether college is worth it is hot and heavy. Currently, 'not worth it' is winning. He has built himself a motorized bicycle, is currently restoring a '94 Toyota MR2 complete with a power train swap to a turbo/manual, and we can't see where going to college would help him in his goal of owning/operating a car performance shop. If someone here has a good justification for why I should spend $100k on a degree for him instead of plowing that money into a shop to get him started I'd like to hear it.
Posted by: Jeff in NC at January 04, 2023 01:42 PM (n2Y2C) ____________________ A vocational degree in auto mechanics might be worth it, but I don't think college is the right call. If he wants to open a performance shop, and has the skills to do so -- or will acquire those skills on his own or outside of college -- then that's the path for him. I will offer one piece of advice: while the "performance" shops are more sexy, it's the basic mechanic work on normal, everyday cars that pays the bills. Tarantino's full of it. The 50s and the 80s weren't the worst decades for movies. The fifties had plenty of good stuff. So did the thirties. In that early period, if I had to single out a decade, it would be the forties. Before that, people were just figuring out what could be done on film. After that, they had it nailed down. But the forties (and the thirties, to a lesser extent), were jam-packed with government propaganda, which is never, ever cool or fun. The eighties? I don't even need to defend it. There were a shitload of TOTALLY AWESOME movies in the eighties, along with the dreck every decade had. The 90s weren't great. But the worst? Please. The '00s were definitely worse, and the '10s were abominable. And a lot of that includes Tarantino flicks. Dude needs to look in a mirror. I like some of his stuff, but a lot of it is crap. Donaldson was also different in that it was never about finding or destroying anything, it was about being weird, creepy and figuring out how to use said McGuffin. I've studied the first women who tried to get to higher education at male only spaces. There was a lot of toxic ideas in that day about women's feeble brains not being able to handle academic rigor, and women were harassed and bullied. (This is also when scientific theories of "wandering wombs" were also popular.)
We have progressed so far since then, to the point that women dominate higher ed in enrollment, plus are the head of universities or university departments. To ignore that success and act like women are still being held back like in the early days is almost evil. Or like someone has an agenda. Posted by: LizLem at January 04, 2023 02:05 PM (+mkOR) 204

My mother brought home a huge stack of car magazines that the library was cleaning out. She worked at the Junior High Library. That stack of Hot Rod and Car Craft magazines from the mid '70's got me interested in cars, and to this day it is a main passion. I learned mechanics, electronics, machining and welding, problem solving and craftsmanship. Prior to that I had train sets, chemistry sets, weather station kits, electronics kits. My father made furniture in the basement workshop. He was an engineer.
I grew up watching the space program and everyone was encouraged to dream a bit. Later I got into auto racing and worked for a company making and selling race car parts. I got an engineering degree, worked in the automotive manufacturing field. I got a couple patents. Now I work for a leading manufacturer of composite carbon fiber pressure tanks for CNG and industrial gas transport. Get your kid kits and toys that let them build something. Encourage them to keep trying because it won't always work as planned. The joy of creation and problem solving is a great way to help a kid grow. I read several of Jordan's Conan books growing up and liked those a lot. I rebought them not long ago to reread as an adult to see what I make of them now. But I've not read his WoT series because . . . too many big books. I've never read Sanderson. When Tarantino says the 80's were creatively bankrupt - and he's wrong - what he means is it was a time when everything was repressed by Christian Conservatives and had to fit in neat little patriotic rah rah Reagan USA boxes.
He's a fucking idiot retard who is also a genius and a seriously talented filmmaker. He also said that current movie times made him rethink his stance on the 80's. What annoys me about him is there is a "conservative" core to a lot of his movies and yet somehow he thinks he's this giant fucking liberal but like all douchebags who are up their own ass, he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. OTOH he doesn't do message movies as such other than "fuck this evil thing". Which means, unlike most of Pedowood, he does believe in evil - it's not some subjective thing. He likes to entertain and take you on a little journey. I like to watch movies that entertain me. So it works. A lot of "conservatives" and movie lovers don't like him and I get it. But he does what the fuck he wants and it's frankly refreshing. Posted by: ... at January 04, 2023 02:25 PM (z0uzK) 347

As a father of two boys and a girl, and as the husband of a former teacher of 20 years, I can tell you unreservedly that the treatment of boys over the past decade especially has become outright toxic.
It began as an effort to make sure the roles of girls were expanded to include fields typically chosen by boys. But it devolved into a zero-sum game, where boys were always the losers. Instead of inclusivity for girls, administrators determined to prove that boys were simply inferior girls -- because boys "acted out" or were always physical or "aggressive." Boys' natural tendencies -- to get hands-on, to be excitable, to behave poorly when sufficient time to burn off extra energy was eliminated -- all played into the administrators' pre-determined outlook. My youngest was always being called out as a problem child. He was called ADHD and autistic. He ended up hating school. In junior high, he came home excited about a new high school possibility at a Tech school. Our low-C's student immediately changed to an honor roll kid on multiple sports teams. It ain't the boys; it's the administrators. Posted by: red speck at January 04, 2023 02:34 PM (gS3OW) 407
