For Some Reason, Traditionalist Men, Who Have Filled the Ranks of the Armed Services Throughout American History, Just Aren't Signing Up Any Longer

The military is having so much trouble recruiting that they're considering dropping their standards to the lowet levels in history.

The Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) is scored by combining points scored on four of the ASVAB subtests. The raw score is then translated into a percentile and ranked to determine a candidate's basic eligibility and placement. In the Navy that translates into one's potential Naval Enlisted Classification code (NEC) and rating. I'll spare you the details.
Due to circumstances that may have been mentioned here, recruiting is markedly down. Every branch of the military is struggling to meet its FY 2022 recruiting quotas; so much so that that the continuation of the all-volunteer force has been questioned. Spox say the Pentagon's top leaders are now casting for ways to find new recruits. Panic mode, in other words.
My Navy has come up with a remarkedly bad idea.

The Navy unveiled new guidelines Monday that allow the service to enlist thousands of sailors with entrance test scores that fall into the lowest aptitude percentile allowed by military standards as it faces a higher recruiting goal, according to a notice from Navy Recruiting Command reviewed by Military.com.
Under the program, the service can recruit and contract up to 7,500 prospective sailors this year who fall under what the military calls "Category IV" recruits, or high school diploma-holding applicants who score within the 10th and 30th percentile on the Armed Forces Qualification Test, or AFQT. Up to 20% of this year's active-duty enlisted pool could fall into the lowest allowable aptitude percentile.

I wonder why capable young men aren't interested in military service any longer.

Fun fact: There was one (a medical corpsman) who had stated when he was drafted during Vietnam that he was ghey, then never hid it during his entire time in service, then got barred from reenlistment at 18 years and successfully sued to be allowed to reenlist to finish 20. I was just thinking about this today. Objectively, we clearly are not as good as we were 20 or 30 years ago. Our Desert Storm army would roll over the Army we have today. But the standard isn't how good you objectively are, it's just how good you are relative to your enemy. Looking out there, I don't see anyone who we wouold go to war with who could beat us. It's like the much-vaunted Israeli army, which never was as good as its press, it's just that they were fighting Arabs.

Coming out of the Carter years, the US Army was giving $5,000 bonuses to anyone who signed up with a high school diploma payable after graduation from AIT. They were in a real bind because a lot of the new weaponry was coming online on the battlefield and a lot of the recruits coming in weren't packing the brain gear to use them. They were sweeping through companies at Ft Benning testing everyone on math skills. Those who scored high enough found themselves working mortar, artillery, and anti-tank job fields. The ones that didn't stayed 11Bs which in those days of the Cold War usually meant a hitch in Germany unless you were bound for jump school after AIT.

Realistically, leaving nuclear weapons aside, the US could subdue the entire planet if we wanted to, we have no neer peer in technology, tactics and experience.

When I was on AD, I had a Danish and a Dutch soldier who had served their conscripted service in their national armies, decided they liked being in the military, but wanted to join one that did something. We've recruited internationals for a long time. Green cards are there if they want them.

152 I joined the army in 1979, the low-water mark of Jimmy Carter's "hollow military." You should have seen the guys I went to basic training and advanced infantry training with. Many were illiterate; several had not completed high school, nor did they have a GED. I even met one guy who had been given the allegorical, "Enlist or go to jail" option by a county judge.

A lot of these men were capital "L" losers in civilian life. Probably more than half of them would never even be considered for enlistment under today's standards. Guys with no future... for a lot of them, the army was their last real shot at redemption. A last opportunity to become men instead of two-legged beasts. And some of them remained losers in the military. My favorite was the guy who, after three months of training, still aimed a claymore mine at himself in the final AIT evaluations.

Let's just say he'd have gotten a foxhole all to himself.

But they had one compelling quality that today's two mommies / two daddies / dog fetishists don't have: they were fighters.

I say we should take another look at these "rough men." They got us through the Cold War. And they are still out there in large numbers.

The US Army was starting to fix things after the Carolina and Louisiana exercises but a real war started that really winnowed out the trimmers.

The naval battles around Guadalcanal did the same thing for the US Navy.

The Brits post Normandy were increasingly more disappointing in combat in 44 due to them frankly running out of infantry, without which all the tankers and fine artillery units could not take channel ports and dig opposition out of rough ground. They started breaking up other units to make some but German collapse came earlier. They also had some trouble with a lot of early war crack units just getting combat fatigue after North Africa and Italy, but lack of grunts was the main factor.

@Taylor, I remember one week in 1980 our platoon in Germany got 2 new privates from basic and AIT. One of them could do 2 rungs on the horizontal ladder (the one he was hanging from and he touched the next one, which counted). The other one got to our unit on Thursday and was busted buying hashish from a CID agent on Friday night. Crack troops there.

When I was in recruiting for the Navy in the early 90s we were forbidden to even look at Cat IV people unless we were no where close to quota towards the end of the fourth quarter and seriously down from end of FY goals. We couldn't touch them without a waiver from COMNAVCRUITCOM. I remember one high school graduate guy that had a 32 AFQT score that we took. 48 was the lowest AFQT score that we had ever taken before that.

295 Things weren't all that great in the 1980's either. My ship's company of 2500 had 80 men at a time on restricted man's muster for usually a month. About half of those would get the boot. They never should have been recruited for the most part. Dope, mostly alcohol, trouble with wives and GF's the issues.

We lost almost the entire communications department after a liberty call in Thailand one year on the Midway. 16 radiomen popped positive after a unit sweep piss test when we left Pattaya Beach. We had to send them all back to San Diego to be admin separated. It was a cluster fvck and we scrounged RM's from every ship in the battle group to make up the losses. Drugs were a big problem then.

They did better once their generals were kept out of their custom bunkers 25 miles behind the line.

Even at KP, the original line was routed, but when they got into the next valley or so they ran into a mess of tank destroyers and the standard shit ton of US Artillery with no shortage of ammo. The Germans hadn't seen anything like it and had to decline to continue the engagement and it was all over.

Eventually we worked out the kinks but the Germans never found an answer to the "once we know where they are we will drown them in artillery and air power" factor.

Plenty, but we can't recruit anyone to man those ships. When I left the Sub base in Groton CT we were pulling Nukes from subs doing maintenance in the yards to fill empty positions for subs deploying. I can only imagine it has gotten worse.

I went through basic training at Ft. Polk Louisiana in the summer of 1969. The guy in the bunk next to mine (damn good thing he wasn't in the bunk above because he was a bed wetter) was, charitably speaking freaking dumb. He did manage to graduate from Basic. Unlike most of us--who were sent on to 11 Bravo Light Weapons Infantry AIT, "Dennis" got sent to Ft. Huachucha. 377 Early 1970s was a bad time in garrison Army. Tons of people just hanging around until separation. We carried a lot of guys as deserters. Very hard to prosecute though. I had a way of explaining Bad Time that got a lot of problems soldiers attention.

I LOVE my nation, and I LOVED my service, but I will never recommend any of the young men in my family (which is rather large 52 cousins, god knows how many seconds, a bunch of nieces and nephews) And though the second greatest period of my life was serving in The Corps, I would never recommend it to a man, because we are second class citizens in service. I MIGHT recommend AF or Navy for the young women because they have advantages, even though they might be indoctrinated so it's iffyl.

392 Now a fun story. First time I came to Australia, I was still active in The Corps. My wife, who is Australian, was catching up with her childhood friend, so I went off and just socialized around a bar. I found a BRM, Brittish Royal Marine who was Scottish so I barely understood a word he was saying, but we got along great because we spoke a different language.

After about 15 minutes, my wife's friend insulted a man that she was hitting on and then she got aggressive, because that's the type of chick she was back then, my wife got in the way because that's the type of chick my wife is, she might not be able to, but she will try to fuck you up if you offend her.

And BOOM! almost riot kicked off, I turned to the BRM "FUCK I gotta take care of this." He said, "NAW You eed ome all set mate." and we both ran into the fight, I grabbed my wife and her friend, and the BRM just went BONKERS beating asses.

It was a thing to be seen. Meanwile wife's friends was kinda self satisfied, and wife wanted to go back and kick someone in the balls meanwhile I didn't want to have my visa yanked.
