++++ Sounds like it might be worth watching. I like Nick Cage, and if it doesn't go down a preachy route about how none of this would be necessary if we had more social justice or down the grrrrrrl power route of a 90-pound nothing beating up big, burly stuntmen, it might turn out well. All of the actors and major crew were super-pissed when they saw the first movie end halfway through the material they'd shot with previews included for the next movie. Since then, all movie contracts have a Salkind clause, specifying that the contract is for a single movie only, and if there's any other movie to be made from the material shot, a separate contract must be signed to cover that.
++++ No doubt. I'd be pissed, too, if I found that out. I wonder how they handle it when they make some second movie out of the cutting-room scraps of the real movie. Can they handle a nearly 3-pound Colt Single Action Army, and do it accurately? I'm just talking about arm and grip strength, now. "The Old Way" looks interesting. I see they cast a black as a bad guy; I didn't know you could still do that.
"The Musketeers" films look *very* interesting. Lester's films are quite good - terrific cast, superb fight choreography, excellent music and art direction, and scripts by George MacDonald Fraser - but on viewing them again recently, I found the slapstick to be really off-putting. It was funny the first time around, but on repeated viewing, it's boring and undercuts the mood. A version that recreates the gritty period feel of the Lester films but does it straight should be terrific to watch. Posted by: Nemo at December 08, 2022 04:21 PM (S6ArX) 66

Eva Green was hot as a young woman, and then developed a sort of gothic, smoldering quality later on. Slightly masculine features help, by balancing her feminine features. However, as she ages she's become more gaunt, and it makes her look skeletal. She'd benefit from about 15-20 extra pounds.

Just in case:
Docetism was a Christological position. Christology is a branch of theology which deals with the nature of Christ. Was Jesus fully human? Was he fully divine? What is his relationship with god the father and the holly spirit? Questions like these were the hot topic in the first couple of centuries of Christian history when people were still processing the biblical account of Jesus of Nazareth. Many conflicting ideas arose, one of which was Docetism which claimed that Jesus was fully divine and any perceptions of his corporeal existence were just illusions. So wrists argued that it is inconceivable that a son of god would have anything in common with sinful material existence. Docetism was however rejected as heresy by both the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodoxy - the way they see Jesus not being corporeal would invalidate his sacrifice. Arianism was another Christological movement in early and medieval Christianity. It rejected the idea of the trinity and instead preached that Jesus the son is a distinct entity from god the father and that Jesus is subordinate to god. In Arianism, Jesus is not an inseparable part of the eternal god ... (cont) Posted by: Archimedes at December 08, 2022 04:23 PM (eOEVl) 80

The Musketeers screenplay/s was/were by Flashman's George MacDonald Fraser BTW.
||The film rights to Flashman were bought by Richard Lester, who was unable to get the film funded but hired Fraser to write the screenplay for The Three Musketeers in Christmas 1972. This would be turned into two films, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, both popular at the box office, and it launched Fraser as a screenwriter.[9]|| Posted by: andycanuck (Vwz3I) at December 08, 2022 04:24 PM (Vwz3I) 86

but rather was created by god. Arianism was famously followed by many Germanic tribes such as the Goths and Lombard, before they migrated to Catholic lands and eventually converted to mainstream beliefs.
Gnosticism is an umbrella term more than anything concrete. It’s used to describe countless movements and religions that originated from Christianity of the late antiquity all the way to medieval times. Lots of these movements were also influenced by either pre-Christian Hellenic or Eastern philosophy. Commonly, Gnostics saw material existence as inherently sinful and emphasised direct spiritual experience (and gnosis / knowledge) of the divine. Stereotypically, many Gnostics viewed the god of the Old Testament as a different entity from the god of the New Testament. The former being an evil trickster and an architect (demiurge) of the sinful material world. This belief is one of the possible solutions to the Problem of evil : how could a supposedly all-powerful, all-knowing and eternally loving god create the sinful material existence and all its assorted horrors? A 12-year-old daughter? I don't know any 12-year-old girls, athletic or not. Some of you may have daughters that age who are into guns. Can they handle a nearly 3-pound Colt Single Action Army, and do it accurately? I'm just talking about arm and grip strength, now. I'm sure if the daughter in the film has a gun rest, whether for a Colt or a Winchester rifle, she'd be able to handle either firearm.

Nope. But they can learn the safety rules. Teach them to shoot using a .22 pistol. I probably started teaching my daughter when she was 14 or 15. She handled the .22 very well. 9mm she did quite well also. She started flinching with a .45. Put her on a black rifle and she did well with that. Remember - you can't beat a woman who shoots. True. Morale was not great as a whole, and the outflanking of the Maginot Line caught them off-guard, and I think they probably would have lost eventually; but it was really the failure of their political and military leadership that did them in.
Posted by: Dr. T at December 08, 2022 04:31 PM (bhRsz) My understanding is that the attack through Belgium was expected- heck, the main reason for the Maginot Line was to ensure that the Germans had to go that way, and allow the French to concentrate troops there- but that they screwed up by assuming that the Ardennes was impenetrable to German forces. Once the Germans flanked their prepared positions, it was a mad scramble towards the Channel. Would make for an interesting alt-history where the French plan had worked, and the Germans had ended up bogged down in static fighting in Belgium. An aside about the Orthodox, they officially call themselves the Orthodox Catholic Church. Orthodox meaning true, and Catholic having been a term in use since Ignatius of Antioch, so pre-Great Schism it's not inappropriate to refer to that collective group as the Catholic Church. It's popular among historians to try to distinguish groups by Councils addressing particular controversies though.

Incredibly enough, we made almost the same mistake in the Battle of the Bulge.
Posted by: Archimedes at December 08, 2022 04:43 PM No, the Allies made the exact same mistake in 1944 as the French did in 1940. We literally put untested and tired divisions in the Ardennes are for rest and refit exactly like the French did. And we knew that the Germans had attacked through there years before and could do it again. I'm not sure this is really different than what I said. Fine, we knew the Germans could make it through the Ardennes, but it would very difficult, and easy to spot, so that's why we put the troops there for r and r. I don't think Pelagius tends to get very negative treatment though(by Catholic scholarship and Catholic influenced scholarship). Sex cults and suicide cults are the most hostilely regarded, and the most well regarded are those that largely got reconciled or didn't really have serious conflict over.

A New Jersey prosecutor has dropped trespassing charges against four pro-life activists...
“In an unusual development in the case…Ferrara successfully argued for the right to raise the defense of necessity at trial,” the law firm explained ... “The grounds, as Ferrara demonstrated, were that the women about to undergo abortions had never been given information on the grave psychological consequences of abortion.” ...there is evidence of an “increased risk of suicide, drug abuse, exacerbation of preexisting mental illness, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” for women after abortion. Ultimately, “Ferrara’s briefings and arguments persuaded the Trenton Municipal Court to allow the defense, which the state would have had to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt.” Posted by: Chuck Martel at December 08, 2022 05:20 PM (fs1hN) 343

Posted by: Infidel at December 08, 2022 05:12 PM (ZEa+g) ------- We hadn't been in a theater for 7 years before going to see Top Gun 2 earlier this year. There were no windows for selling tickets and no ticket takers, and I'm like WTF? Then I saw a couple of computer screen kiosks, and figured out it was a self-serve/self-pay operation now ... get the hell off my lawn! Even here in rural Northern AZ the Circle K convenience stores's now are all self checkout (except for lottery tickets, booze, & EBT). Yeah not only is it an actually very well made movie, but its important for modern westerners to understand how horrendously evil some cultures that were wiped out really were. Sometimes colonists obliterating a culture was a GOOD THING. And I had not heard that about The Three Musketeers. The Salkinds were... to call them corrupt is understating things considerably. But they did manage to get some really great entertainment out there. I agree that is the best of the film adaptations of the book (which is, as you say, very long but very worth reading. Alexandre Dumas was as great a writer as his father was a general). I don't really like Michael York but the rest of the cast is magnificent. Speaking of movies based on heresy-
Saw a Polish horror movie last night on Netflix, more or less based around the Gnostic and Albigensian heresies, titled - "HellHole" A policeman enters a monastery, which is known for exorcisms. He is disguised as a monk to investigate the disappearance of 8 women from the surrounding area. The beginning will remind you of the end of "The Omen". Shenanigans ensue. "Hellhole" wants to both gross you out and then creep you out with its heretical plot line. Somenice surprises and shocks, though a bit slow moving. This is one of those movies where the ending really delivers and saves it as a movie. If it sounds like your kind of thing, it probably is. I'll miss Charlton Heston as Cardenal Richelieu. That version is the best to date, thanks largely to George MacDonald Fraser. Although they are a little campy. And I've been spoiled by Steven Brust's The Phoenix Guards. But I trust the French to do Dumas credit.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at December 08, 2022 05:24 PM (0hOvj) I believe a major driver is history becoming a propaganda tool aimed at the masses. The West already had a tendency to romanticize and the skew begins to get worse as historical accounts become relevant to the thinking of larger and larger groups of people. I am a sucker for movies based on The Three Musketeers. I agree that the Lester movies are the gold standard, primarily because they took the time to tell the lion's share of the story. I have some quibbles with the casting -- Oliver Reed doesn't look aristocratic enough for Athos and Frank Finlay doesn't have the physical presence of a good Porthos -- but Michael York plays D'Artagnan callow and cocky enough, Richard Chamberlain is a credible Aramis, and Charlton Heston is a magnificent Richelieu. I don't mind the gags -- Raquel Welch is a real find as a physical comedienne, and how can you not like Roy Kinnear and Spike Milligan?
Posted by: Darles Chickens at December 08, 2022 08:10 PM (sev8q) 382
I saw that Three Musketeers trailer the other day, and what struck me was the profound lack of color. No blue tunics, you can barely make out the Cardinal's reds....even the grass is a dull tan! That just feels wrong for a movie about royal intrigues in the 1600's.
