Top Story

  • So with Elon Musk spending all his time trolling people on Twitter, his other companies are floundering, with Tesla, uh, launching its promised electric semi and blowing away all the competition. (EV Universe)

There are other electric semis on the market, but the Tesla has the largest battery, the longest range, the fastest recharge time (not even close), and the highest efficiency.

It takes 30 minutes to recharge to 70% capacity, and has a fully charged range of a little over 500 miles.

The article analyses the test trip to dig up details like the effectiveness of the Tesla's regenerative braking and its unloaded weight.

Tesla has around 1000 orders for the Semi already.

  • Meanwhile Starlink, which already operates more satellites than everyone else in the world put together has FCC approval to triple its deployments. (Engadget / MSN)

The company will be launching 7500 Gen 2 satellites. These will enable broader adoption of direct-to-orbit mobile communications.

15 Monday evening and morning to everybody! Yeah, I know, Monday, but this weekend (despite being over-warm and sticky, as usual) was a good one. Kittens Stirling and Dagny are not only well, they kept me company, napping on opposite ends of the couch yesterday afternoon, as I read Dan Simmons' Summer of Night. People have mentioned it on the Book Thread. Good stuff so far; he reads like a less-mannered Stephen King.

I've got physical therapy again this pm, and I need to walk this morning or I know I'll put it off until Wednesday.

46 Maybe i'll have more coffee ice cream.

That sounds like a splendid idea.

I don't know fvckall about lithium ion batteries. But I do know high amperes and batteries are dangerous. The potential energy stored in even a lead-acid car battery is tremendous.

A car battery will accept however many amperes you can provide it. So in theory, you can take a completely dead car battery and charge it up in less than an hour easy-peasey. This is not the preferred method however. It causes lots of heat, and can buckle internal plate structures in the separator grids or whatever.

All of these facts and figures bandied about for electric cars are based on ideal situations in good weather with mild temperatures - I guarantee it.

Plus equipment that has been babied by reasonably technically minded people, and not abused,

I talked to one mechanic, he said his school district has to buy new batteries for their school busses every year. (They take 4 of them, btw). Why? Because they park the buses in the summer, and they go dead, and sulfate up, ruining them.

Fleets of busses, trucks, postal vehicles, all that shit will be a huge fucking debacle. Guaranteed.

I am a fan of the Surface Pro and Go tablets. I have both and I use them as a tablet about half the time and I don't find Windows 11 to be a deal breaker. The big plus is they are full blown PCs. I don't find the app gap, compared to iPads/Android, to be a much of an issue now that the Edge browser can turn any web page a progressive web app. I highly suggest getting a Surface Pro with a core i5 CPU if a device that is a complete laptop replacement meets your requirements. If you are looking for something smaller the Surface Go 3 is a terrific PC/tablet provided you get it with the core i3 CPU. I use a Surface Go 2 with the M3 CPU and it goes with me everywhere (they fit in a bag/purse perfectly). I have had a few Samsung tablets and they were OK. Happy shopping.

50 Morning all.

Could use a tech recommendation if anyone can help. Youngest canuck here has been struggling with school so we had an assessment done for him. It turns out he has dyslexia. His reading has been steadily improving but his spelling is atrocious. We are planning to get him a c-pen to help with reading but need a standalone device to help with spelling. Something that is not a tablet or phone app as the school is not ok with students having those.

There are hundreds of translator devices that do speech to text but we don't want that we want a simple speech to text device that he can say a single word and see the correct spelling.

52 Also, for the praying types, his friend, who is only 8, is having surgery this morning to remove his lower left leg due to cancer. They will reattach the femur upside down and it will be at least 11 hours in the OR for that poor family. It's been heavy on all our minds especially little canuck. Please pray for a successful surgery and grace and peace for the family.

Posted by: CanuckJack at December 05, 2022 05:38 AM (ZUKbR)

53 JT, he's quite good with phonetically correct words as we have focused on phonics quite a lot. The problem for people with dyslexia is that English has so many words that break the phonics rules. Those words are a constant blocker for reading but worse for spelling as you cannot sound them out. There is no way to sound out why friends is spelled that way for example. There are rules, yes but the rule only helps if you remember that friends is one of the weird words with an i and an e.

89 While Trump's comments on the Constitution are shocking and dangerous, Biden is actually in the pantheon of truly anti-Constitution presidents, men who took extraordinary steps in governing outside the bound of the document for the "greater good". Unfortunately for the uneducated the list reads like a nice, not naughty roll call - FDR. Wilson. Lincoln. Consider though that through 46, likely only two Presidents played by the rules. Washington, who be all accounts remains our greatest President. Was he swayed to fidelity by the newness of the thing, or by the death and destruction he engineered to achieve it? The other? Coolidge.

That article was quite interesting - until the video he end, when the writer started pontificating on the joys/advantages of Unions. In this guy's mind, this group of engineering students would not have been able to come together and get the problem solved were it not for the fact that there is "strength" in a union.

Obviously the writer hasn't been around many engineers - they LIVE to solve problems and come up with solutions, they do that better than just about anyone, and the fact that they can rub that in the face of that lying sack of shit dweeb with his "listening sessions" is just the cherry on top.

So, 30 minutes using the supercharger - which shortens the lifespan of the battery and uses even more of the electricity California doesn't have - to get 350 miles.

We would do well to have a Coolidge type in office again. But at the time, he was mocked by the bien-pensant "elites" of the day.

Dear Salty,

Thanks again for your nice note, and article and kind donation for our church. I think I still might have it, but in case I don't could you send your phone number to my e-mail FenelonDiection18@gmail.com? I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions, but I think it would help me, because I am really achy- if there was a time between your bus runs tomorrow or this week or in the evening I could talk to you to discuss things?

Also, I asked Jessie yesterday about her husband and she said he was an Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. I don't know how these things work, but she said he would have been a full Colonel, but the benefits were cut off the day before that was supposed to happen. I don't know if she's confused but that was what she said. She doesn't know his call sign".

96 Good morning! Can someone school me on the issue of PDTS making 'unforced errors' because I really don't see that.

If we're talking about his 'dinner' with Kanye and Fuentes, I think PDTS was just trying to reach out to someone who was a mentally troubled friend. In that case 'optics' really don't matter, do they? The important thing is that your friend knows he has your sympathy and support.

If we're talking about his recent remarks regarding the constitution, when they're read in context in their entirety it's pretty obvious that he's asking the right question. The constitution has no provisions for stolen elections so how do you remediate them?

What am I missing?

99 While Trump's comments on the Constitution are shocking and dangerous...Indignacio Vindacatorem

If you read Trump's comment carefully, they are somewhat ambiguous, and it is this ambiguity that is being used to construe them in the least favorable light to him. There is nothing new in this as this game has be played before. When I read them in their totality, I hear him raising questions about what our system of government can do when an election is corrupted as it appears to have been when in the 2020 election as is evidenced in the current Twitter revelations.

And who is Nick Fuentes, anyway? Looks like he's just some failed blogger/you-tube loser who Kanye has fallen in with. Anybody over the age of 30 with a few projects under his belt has seen these kinds of fads come and go. The damage this particular one did to the last organization at which I worked was incalculable - people with decades of experience delivering high quality software on time were suddenly at the mercy of 23 year old diversity hire project managers who had never written a line of code.

A few years after I left, the company realized it no longer produce functioning software, let alone maintain the old stuff, so they fired everyone and moved the work to India. It is probably less than 350 miles, as rechargeable batteries tend to do poorly if discharged 100%

178 "By definition there isn't a way to remedy this situation within the law..."

And since the DOJ decided to persecute those that went to the Capitol on 1/6 they successfully brought the people to their knees. Arizona's vote was stolen in plain sight of everyone over the past month and the people that got screwed do nothing.

But getting back to the dems, they openly and regularly attack the Constitution and we yawn. 1A and 2A are under assault, and yes the electoral college is there, too. Do we or the press attack them, no. We're the only ones slashing our wrists over these statements and only when our guy, fed up with the dems and rinos illegal conduct, gets angry.

Trump is a good wielder of a megaphone for getting topics into discussion.

Posted by: fd at December 05, 2022 07:37 AM

In my opinion, it would help conservatives to read things like this -- "the end of Trump" -- by replacing "Trump" with "America first policies". Because that is what they are actually saying. "The end of America-first policies".

None of the anti-Trump people are pro-America-first, but just anti-Trump. They are actually in favor of eliminating the America-first movement, but lying about that by saying they just want to get rid of Trump.

Just like they demonized McCain and Romney as worse than Hitler, they will also demonize anyone who takes up President Trump's America first agenda as worse than Trump. They are not about eliminating Trump, they are about eliminating the America-first agenda and anyone who supports it.

Yep. The Twitter Files revealed that Katie Hobbs abused her power as Secretary of State and worked with Twitter to censor her opponents. She should be in prison, but she's going to be Governor so she can help steal AZ's electoral votes for the Democrat candidate in 2024.

184 We are in a de facto post-Constitutional era anyway, so somebody saying that there’s no Constitutional remedy for what ails us is correct.

186 @163 It's a losing game even before we start talking about battery range and life.

I've seen you post on this several times, and know it to be true -- but you must be realizing by now that people's knowledge of physics is based on received and supposed truths. You just cannot get electricity ratepayers to acknowledge how much is wasted in the transfer of electricity. They cannot comprehend it.

187 I'm sure someone else said this already, but, what's the range on that Tesla Semi with a fully loaded trailer attached?

188 >>It is ancient history now and thus forgotten that the self-righteous MSNBC anchorman Lawrence O’Donnell falsely claimed that Deutsche Bank documents. . .

Also remember how MSNBC ran a weekday morning (10-11am EST) show hosted by Dr. Nancy Snyderman from the beginning of Obamacare legislation through to its passing, then it went away. They essentially gave Obama 1 hr per day free "news" platform to push the legislation.

Then there was Al Sharpton, Obama's 'advisor on African-Americans', who had an hourly nighttime show pushing Obama's agenda. And also the DNC email leak that showed how DWS approved, advised their programming - even demanding they kill a live story in progress. Or recall Mika reading WH texts on air rebutting the responses of a guest interview in progress????

They are not a news channel, they are DNC-TV.

191 IF you thought the Tesla automobiles spontaneously igniting was dismaying - get a load of what a semi Can and WILL do when self sacrificing. Schadenfreud for days. DAYS!

OPINION: Feral legislation will address by tacking on and jacking up the terms and conditions of "fire" insurance and its consequences. "If it moves, tax it."

192 >the effectiveness of the Tesla's regenerative braking and its *unloaded* weight.

Because that's totally the most important statistic in a transport truck.

The sleight of hand is obvious: tallest kid at midget camp isn't something to be proud of, and EVs are notorious for range dropping to about twelve feet when under towing load.

194 'Scrum' isn't so much a scam as it is a tool of limited use.

The problem largely lies in management thinking it can be used for anything (We have this nice, big, shiny, hammer . . . ).

Posted by: aelfheld at December 05, 2022 11:36 AM (Zy9Yy)

195 Having dealt with scrum, waterfall and avalanche, the thing is, they're really about what risks you're willing to take. Scrum is about constant cost/schedule, at the risk of not all features happening, while Waterfall, it is your feature set that is fixed, with cost/schedule growing to match.

Avalanche is what you get when you try to get everything for exactly the price and schedule you wanted.

Scrum is broken now because no-one wants to acknowledge that risks exist, and are trying to treat a system specifically made to manage risk as though it eliminated them. And you can't run an honest program by basing it on a known lie.
