Martha McCallum Grills John Kirby: Why Is the White House "Keeping an Eye on Twitter" While Not Even Saying a Word in Private to Apple About Actively Assisting China in Repressing Its Own People?

In case you missed it, Apple bowed to the demands of their Chinese Communist Partners and secretly deleted a key feature in Apple phones which protesters and dissidents had previously used to communicate discretely.

Apple's updates are usually very thorough about telling you exactly what they will change. But not this time -- the update, intended only for the Chinese market, omitted any mention that the "AirDrop" feature, long relied on by protesters and dissidents, would be greatly limited.

AirDrop eludes censorship/monitoring systems because, if I understand this right, AirDropped transmissions go phone-to-phone, like walkie-talkies, without having to first go to through a cell tower or the internet.

Users had no idea they'd be crippling one of the few tools they had to communicate without state monitoring when they accepted the update.

Which is the way Apple wanted it, because that's the way their Chinese Communist partners and paymasters wanted it.

A Nov. 9 software update included an additional AirDrop feature applying only to iPhones sold in mainland China.

AirDrop, which allows users to share content between Apple devices, has become an important tool in demonstrators' efforts to circumvent authoritarian censorship.

The feature relies on wireless connections between phones, rather than internet connectivity, placing it beyond the scope of internet content moderators.

Protests in China have attracted international attention as the greatest challenge of President Xi Jinping's premiership and a major knock to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) longstanding authority.

But their spread within China was partially hobbled by a key change in Apple
's AirDrop feature, launched just weeks before the unrest.

AirDrop, which allows users to share content between Apple devices, has become an important tool in protestors' efforts to circumvent authoritarian censorship regimes over recent years.

That is because it relies on wireless connections between phones, rather than internet connectivity, placing it beyond the scope of internet content moderators. It uses Bluetooth to form a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi network between two devices.

The tool was used widely during Hong Kong's 2019 pro-democracy protests, when demonstrators would share messages and protest literature with passers by and visitors from mainland China through AirDrop's open network.

More recently, in mid-October, AirDrop was reportedly used to disseminate messages based on banners produced by a Beijing demonstrator known as "Bridge man."

China-only software update

However, it was limited earlier this month, when a Nov. 9 update to Apple's global operating system, iOS 16.1.1, included an additional AirDrop feature applying only to iPhones sold in mainland China.

Under the update, iPhones can now only set their AirDrop to receive messages from "everyone" for 10 minutes before switching off. The other settings allow for file-sharing between "contacts only" or "receiving off."

Apple did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment. In an online statement, the company said the software update includes "bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users."

NSC spokesman John Kirby appeared on Martha MacCallum. She wanted to know why the Biden White House -- and Biden himself, in fact -- had all but declared Elon Musk a National Security Threat and ordered a Deep State probe of him because he wasn't imposing the left's totalitarian censorship regime, but had offered absolutely no criticism or government scrutiny of Apple, despite it now being officially part of the Communist China Secret Police apparatus.

He says, "Because Apple is a private company."

She responds, "Twitter is a private company, too."

He then says, "These are completely different situations," having failed in his first attempt to mark them as different situations.

He then say that Twitter must be subjected to a Deep State probe because it might have foreign investors. Note that Twitter also had foreign investors when it was imposing the left's censorship regime, and the left had no problem with foreign investment then.

Also note that Apple has a lot of foreign investors.

Martha MacCallum points out that Apple is taking orders from a foreign government here, which seems to be the very situation that this bullshit concern over "foreign investors" is aimed at preventing. That is, grumbling about foreign investors is ultimately about trying to keep a major company from being perverted by foreign powers to work their will.

But Apple is already working China's will, to help it crush an organic protest movement.

And Kirby says "But it's different!"

Because Apple is helping Biden crush his own despised internal dissident movement, of course.

Not only will he not scold Apple publicly, but he admits the White House has not even reached out to Apple privately, behind the scenes, to ask them why they are now a partner organization with the Chinese Secret Security Police.

From Twitchy.

Flashback:

Apple and China do seem to be in perfect alignment as regards Regime censorship and state police control over the minds and words of the citizenry.

45 The change by Apple affects more than what's described above. According to one YouTube channel I watch that focuses on China, dissidents were using the feature to get word out about the protester who hanged anti-Xi Jumping banners in Beijing a couple of months ago ("Bannerman"). People with the Airdrop feature turned on would get a message along the lines that Xi Jinping wanted to send them a message. If they accepted the message, they'd be greeted by pictures of the banners that Bannerman put up. Because the CCP ruthlessly censored any and all news about Bannerman, this was how the dissidents spread news about what he'd done (which was unheard of). The fact that the change by Apple happened immediately after this tactic started is probably not a coincidence as requiring users to turn Airdrop back on every ten minutes blocks this tactic.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at December 01, 2022 12:11 PM (AW0uW)

This is a very, very important point. The Left has no problem, for instance, paying more for an 'organic, free-trade, ethically harvested' product. If you want to do things that align with your beliefs, you'll make the appropriate sacrifices to do so. We should do the same.

At this stage in the tech revolution, there is functionally no significant sacrifice to be made when you don't use an Apple product. It's not like you're going back to the Bronze Age - at worst, you're going back to 2015. Is that so high a price to pay to stick it to the globalists? If it is, then what's the price for fighting at all?

Hey Bulgaroctonus,

I left the Art thread early, but saw you had questions about Tim Horton.

Tim is considered one of the 100 greatest NHL players of all time, having spent over 24 years in the league with Toronto, NY Rangers, Pittsburg Penguins and the Sabres.

Punch Imlach brought Tim to a new, and very young Buffalo Sabres squad in 1972 for his veteran leadership. He played only two years in Buffalo, as he was killed in a car crash. He was returning from a Sabres game in Toronto, and crashed his De Tomaso Pantera on the QEW, a half hour to the north of Buffalo.

His Donut franchise took off well after his death.

93 There's a diminishing return when you're "lifting people out of poverty."

If you're a Chinese citizen, living out in some village somewhere in the countryside, you're living a functionally equivalent life to a European peasant from the middle ages. Advancing to flushing toilets and running water is a HUGE step.

Contrast that with American poor who live in houses with electricity, running water, flagship cell phones, big screen tvs and air conditioning. It takes a big investment to marginally improve that person's life.

Yes, some of this is tongue in cheek. I know some people in America live on the street and many people in China live in modern-ish cities (with air quality similar to 1700s London.)

The US government will never challenge Apple in any way, whether or not they cleave to the bosom of the Party (though they will).

Look at it this way: Apple does not depend on the US economy for any of its production inputs. None of its materials, manual labor, or manufacturing come from the US. Some of its top execs, designers and engineers are American, but a ton of them are H1Bs. There is nothing to stop the boys in Cupertino from selling that fancy building and going to Dubai or wherever.

Not that the threat would ever happen - Apple has a $2.35T market cap. They can and do use it to bribe every single Commie limpdick in DC and every statehouse.

By contrast - China provides Apple its raw material, its manufactures, and all the delicious, yummy slave labor that goes into those things. And no small number of the aforementioned H1Bs. Those guys can snap their fingers at any time and get Tim Cook to blow them like one of his rentboys.

Kirby is right about Twitter - the situations aren't even remotely similar. Twitter can be bullied by the US. Apple cannot.

However, I have yet to see China as a beacon for a world yearning for a good life. Get back to me when people the world over are clamoring to get in. Nobody wants to consciously live in that sh*t country.

Thing is, just straight markets wouldn't matter, but what we have are essentially cartels managed by national governments to exclude competition. That is the purpose of anti-monopoly legislation is all about, to make sure the members don't cheat on each other and all competition is excluded.
Regulatory capture and anti-monopoly legislation work hand in hand

If you "give" the government anti-monopoly powers, we wind up with what we have today.

That last Tim Cook vid about the ChiComs "lifting people out of poverty" is such bullshit. What the ChiComs did is they simply gave poor people a few yuan a year to bridge the gap between what they already produce for subsistence and the UN floor number that defines absolute poverty for China's development level, which is about $2000 per year.

So instead of a billion people making an annual income of $1990 a year, they have a billion people making $2001 per year. Yay! Absolute poverty defeated!

199 Few observations: One, there are options for non-google or apple phones. It requires a bit of tech know-how but lineage OS is the open source version of android that can be installed on older phones after wiping them.- with a couple of variants plus a list of phone models that support it. Best start with an older unlocked phone to begin with. PinePhone is a complete degoogled open source phone that is rtg--the smart phone will be a bit behind current tech. Older phones include the Windows phone by Nokia and a Ubuntu linux phone that got abandoned by Ubuntu but kept alive by volunteers.

Two, fix your application permissions and limit what it can do. The low tech faraday bag can stop tracking such as when your phone is off.

Last but not least, figure anything that you share over phones, texts, search engines like Google, data, tv/streaming boxes, or gps is accessible with enough concentration by authorities without a warrant. Insecurities include VPNs, Tor Onion searches, apps like Signal, etc. and so on. Encryption can be broken but it takes some time--the usual way snoopers get in though is by tricking the target to get an app, etc. installed opening backdoors.

Given that the various apps and other data collecting bits PAY such as Apple and Samsung for the access and "rights" to collect said data, I'd like to know the value of those payments, over (presuming) the nominal three-year life of the phone. For conversation, let's call it $200 in fees, over that time.

Fine. I will opt to pay that $200 into what *I* pay for the fone, with the provision that there remains NO data collecting apps, cumulative data tracking or other such, less the raw necessity of the phone knowing it's location when it *pings* a tower, etc.

And, I want no cloud. My photos, documents, searches, etc. Those remain and are stored in MY fone, and not XYZ's erstwhile cloud. I'm not asking for a Secure Fone for free. It's worth something to me, and I'll pay the rate to have one!

Garmin makes a perfectly fine GPS, which can be used for mapping purposes. Now, this is not a slam on you (I, for instance, use my bricked HP Elite Smartphone for a GPS sometimes - my SIM card is in my flip phone), but this is symptomatic of the cult of convenience we've all succumbed to. It's truly great to have one device to rule all our tasks, rather than many. What we've done, however, is made it trivially easy to have the gov't control one entity to dominate us, rather than hundreds. I'm as guilty as the next for doing my bit to facilitate this, but I'm now taking the time to extricate myself. I'll sacrifice convenience for individual security, going forward.

228 185 Macs are unix based (Free BSD) and run on Intel chips. No reason that any IT person would have issues getting them to work with Linux and Windows. Posted by: Notsothoreau

-------------------------
Free BSD is enough alike but enough different to Linux to create problems on the margins such as configuration files necessary to access corporate networks and resources while keeping up with required updates and internal security.

Sort of like running different kernels of Linux or differences between Windows 10 and 11--you can have strange issues with mundane things like printer drivers, video drivers, and so on. Configuration file locations can move. Stack that with pushed OS updates from Apple that can break things, it can be an issue. I have about 4-5 computers that I maintain (less now since parents and inlaws have passed on).

Basically, the more OS'es you maintain, the bigger the pita on actual physical machines. That is why virtual machines are becoming so popular but they gobble memory and storage space.

A poster here used to make comments on his installation of Lineage on older Google Pixel models--Dr. (something or other). Lineage though by its very nature will ALWAYS be behind in tech versus Apple or Google simply because phones specs from manufacturers are built around those two. So, it takes awhile for volunteer techies to break down those idiosyncrasies in phone hardware and software applications by trial and error to ensure they work well enough for most people wanting to have a basic phone. The major drawback is the Google App Store and right now micro g is simply not there yet.

Apple's app market though is dying from Apple greed and Google's latest OS actually gives greater control over app permissions along tracking. It also allows you to fuzzify your location reported to apps making exact determinations difficult.

People will defer to others who demonstrate some level of expertise in an area in which they know they are inexpert. In the case of "fire can't melt steel," someone can do a flawed physical demonstration, then show you real numbers that show the melting point of steel and the flame temp of a map gas torch or the flame temp of aircraft fuel.

What they don't know is that another expert can come along and tear all of that apart by demonstrating that metal can turn into play-doh at a much lower temperature than the melting point of steel.

Thanks for the update on technology. Given what you told me, containers would be the way to go if you want to run a bunch of operating systems for development and modern cpus, storage, and memory can do it.

But, it is easier for me to simply use different computers with new technology albeit with dual booting as I refresh the home models on about a three year rolling basis.

For a home user, that is about the sweet spot of cost versus benefit because software including drivers lags hardware advances by at least 12 to 18 months. More if you rely on open source operating systems.

I now have an $80 Android with gooble play and everything else google turned off and Brave sideloaded and it works pretty well.

Would you consider selling the Pinephone, if it still works?

I sure wish they could get a do-over.

Maybe that could be Musk's foundation for a new phone.

Always said BB need full screen on one side and BB UI on the other.

291 The internet is the problem, not Apple. We let governments take control of it. And then they made us dependent on it.

If Apple hadn't done what they did, then the Chicom government would have shut the whole internet down. Every phone and computer that's connected is at the mercy of tech and government censorship .

292 281 Rush used to be really big into Apple stuff. Presumably he wouldn’t be anymore if he were alive. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus

-----------------------------
The issue is that learning curves are steep and people naturally resist learning new stuff for basic operations over and over again. Techies may get excited about the latest hardware gizmos etc or Wayland v. X11 graphics but most people just want their shit to work. But, software and hardware companies will die profit wise if they cannot get people to upgrade, sell them support, or lock them in via proprietary means like IBM did and still does for legacy big iron systems.

293 280 The thing that continues to amaze me is that while KJP, Buttigieg, Harris and the others in this administration are diversity hires they are utterly incompetent at there jobs. While I'm sure that globalists think incompetence leads to success for their cause it will only lead to disaster. This has got to be the plan
Posted by: Smell the Glove at December 01, 2022 01:01 PM (mP+mW)

Incompetent people are easily used as sock puppets, they can be trained to not make any decisions that are not approved ahead of time and can be manipulated.
I suspect Harris is having all the problems she is having because she is resistant to being led, or else she is a slow learner.

Posted by: Kindltot at December 01, 2022 01:08 PM (xhaym)

All KJP does is mindlessly read talking points from her notebook. If nothing is in there about a topic, she has sort-of learned to say "I'll talk to our people working on that and get back to you," instead of, "Umm, well, I'm not finding anything new about that in my briefing book."

Her demeanor has morphed from frequent confusion and defensiveness into a near-Psaki level of total condescension and lecturing.

294 That is the stone cold bitch as custom apps or even requiring the latest version of a Google/Apple app can be a killer for alternative software.

Takes awhile for the volunteers to get around those barriers and by then the app developers have moved on to new versions.

What if you don't use apps? Any app. Just use the fucker to make and receive phone calls, and to browse the Internet when sitting in a cafe?

Canada still has 3g cell service? I think the drop dead date for most US service plans if not all is January 2023 or so.

Had to change out some older cell based alarm systems for my parents and it took a new cell modem board to do it.

298 I loved Apple. The hardware was durable and a pleasure to use. The software worked just as well for my purposes as MS stuff. As far as expense, my Apple devices required no repairs or replacements, so I came out way ahead of my colleagues with their Windows machines.

Then Apple decided to break my phone with that fake "unhealthy battery" update. They moved stuff to the cloud that shouldn't have to be there and messed up our subscription, introducing maddening glitches.

I would love to find a better alternative, but it seems Apple is milking the marketing plan of "we stink 5% less than the other guys!"

Depends on what degree you feel your privacy needs to be protected. To turn on a phone, it will send information to the local cell tower as to the id of the phone, cell network permissions, and so on--it is possible to clone an existing phone but it is pretty obvious with any use of it what has happened in a short time. Want to browse the internet, even using a VPN, the information passes through multiple hands and some of that is location data buried in websites. Even flip phones can be tracked. And there is strong suggestions that cellphones that are off still emit tracking information now and again. Plus there is every indication they can remotely turn on and off your phone, mikes, and cameras if so desired.

There are ways to sidestep a lot of it and countermeasures used by govt agencies if they really want to track you. Want to keep privacy in this day and age--I advise being a hermit in the woods like crazy Ted K.

They do. Dunno if you can upgrade an older phone or if there is a tradein value for it.

Posted by: whig at December 01, 2022 01:26 PM (bDjBG)

301 I still have my plain old galaxy 10. No plan to upgrade, I use it for texts, occasional pictures, check my mail. I don't need apple, prestige brand, or frills.

I don't splurge on prestige brands, at all. Never have.

302 There are only two reasons I use an iPhone: better battery life, and longer security updates to the OS. The combination let's me go 5-7 years between phone replacement, instead of 3-4 for an Android phone. The last time I compared phones (unlocked), the phone price was comparable. I can use the iPhone longer.

If an American or South Korean phone maker guaranteed 6 years of OS updates, I'd switch.- especially if I can use a Windows or Linux PC to write apps for it.

But there is a small problem that some red state AGs have the admin by the balls with their techie friends. Adding to the pounding they are going to take there, and on a point where 5 of the justices of the SCOTUS are absolutely enraged with the FJB WH, they had no basis upon which to protest the sale. It would just create another case for them to lose.

306 Kirby is right about Twitter - the situations aren't even remotely similar. Twitter can be bullied by the US. Apple cannot.

Partly true - partly not. As China continues swirling down the proverbial toilet, Apple is very exposed to what is happening. They have recently begun exploring options in India. But China can shut Apple down at the moment, because Apple is so dependent upon them within their supply chain. This is going to cost Apple huuuuge amounts of money to pull out, which they have. But it will tap their cash as nothing has before. Most Apple investors think it will be OK. Most Apple investors are wrong.

308 Kirby is another scumbag whose entire military service is a cover. He went to a military academy, then spent his entire career being a f'n pres secretary for various departments, then he gets bumped up to Admiral despite being nothing but a worthless propagandist.

I get the military needs great minds to lead, as well as those who are boots on the ground, but no one should reach since of the highest echelons for being nothing more than a media talking head.

310 Because Apple is doing the exact same thing for the US government that it's doing for China. They see Apple's actions as a feature, not a bug.

They are losing that control over Twitter, so it makes them nervous. They want Twitter and Apple to do whatever governments tell them to do. Apple is still "on the reservation".

Therein lies your distinction.
