Polygon: How did a queer relationship come to be the core of this show? When did it enter the process and was there any pushback? Jonathan Kasdan: There was no pushback. What's interesting is -- I hope and I believe we're at a moment where you're going to see a paradigm shift in that. And hopefully, the way that it's gonna happen is that these kinds of [queer] stories, particularly like this one, that were just organic to the narrative we were telling, find their way in, and it becomes less of a surprising and unusual thing to see.

Willow was a pretty okay movie, it was meh except for Val Kilmer, who makes every movie he's in better. Even that godawful Batman movie would have been worse without him.
I was hoping they took that kind of interesting world and went interesting places in it. They even had a front-loaded chosen special one grrl power lead (Willow, the girl) and a set up conflict for her to defeat.
But, who trusts Disney to do anything right these days? Nobody.

All the creatives are woke and poor writers, so they take something like Home Alone and turn it into nonsense. Yeah, the faeries could have been comfortably deleted and very little of the story needed changing. Would have been better overall. Sadly, they are in the TV show too, apparently.
Its a pretty grown up story, with some kid friendly elements, outside of the faeries. They were just obnoxious obviously jammed into the story to appeal to children.

Well... yeah that is true, but in my experience writing, things go a certain way because they feel like they should go that way, based on what you've written so far. I don't buy into the idea that the characters write themselves or somehow outside influences are moving your story, but it sometimes kind of feels that way.
I'll write a chapter then look at it and go "where the hell did that come from?"

I think it would have worked better as a miniseries, its too long and kind of aimless and without a story (as a bio usually is).
I agree that Kasdan's history as a writer and filmmaker is very patchy; he's done some real gems and a lot of pretty lame crap.

It is slow paced, but it's trying to tell a life story. I don't re-watch it often, but I have rewatched it....um...mostly looking for nitpicks after reading one or another biography of Wyatt. The movie came pretty close to the man, honestly.

Iger is not a creative type but someone who grew Disney via acquisitions but larding it up with debt. He trusted the creative types to come up with salable merchandise and the amusement parks were a stable income gainer that allowed the creative types to take risks.
The problem is that his creative types were batshit crazy, Covid put holes in the amusement park and cruise ship industry, and interest rate increases hit debt laden companies like Disney hard. And now his creative types that he hired and nurtured are killing off the amusement parks by woke shit, interest rates are still likely to climb, and people are now viewing Disney as Groomer Central.
The only way for Disney forward is to break up the company now into salable pieces or in bankruptcy later.

I see it as a fairly blank canvas with some elements in place to start to build around, which sometimes is better than a super developed world. Part of why Rings of Power failed (other than bad writing, plotting, acting, etc) is that the world is so restrictive and laid out that its difficult to create within the limits.

That's a big reason why it's kind of "meh." It feels like a very generic fantasy world, with little to make it interesting. We only see a very small part of it with a "good" faction that is practically useless until the very end and an "evil" faction that doesn't seem to have goals other than to chew the scenery with their evil.

The genius behind the first SW movies was the first wife of Lucas and experienced writer Leigh Brackett was responsible for the second movie. The third movie was a step down (no insult intended Chief Ewok) and then Lucas believed himself to be a genius and promptly acted to destroy the franchise but make money off the licensing. Lucas, btw, sold just before an increase in the capital gains tax was to come into effect.
All in all, his best work was when others fixed what his deficiencies and Disney has Kathleen Kennedy to destroy and bury the remains of the franchise.

I would disagree that the world is so restrictive. The writers lacked creativity to work within the prescribed limits. You could easily do a series set around the Elves forging the Rings of Power but you'd have to understand the politics and the factions involved to make it interesting. You could also do a series leading up to the Battle of the Last Alliance when the Rings were already created and active, serving as McGuffins that either help the heroes (Elven Rings), interfere with their plans (Dwarven Rings), or corrupt the leaders (Men).

It depends. If you take into account marketing, opportunity costs, and other costs, they probably broke even after the film trilogy. Disney+ is taking a bath because the geniuses don't realize that a new series does not necessarily mean new subscribers.
Andor would probably have worked had everything else been at least decent. Broadening the SW universe would be good. However, since Disney failed at the core stuff, no one cares about expanding the horizon.

That said, religious types will mostly stop reading once the gay comes out, IME. If sex or romance is n't part of the plot, why mention the sexuality of a character?
But if the story's good and characters are vivid, it will find readers.

A well-developed property at least has a core of fans that one can theoretically build on as an audience. Willow? Not really. I like the movie quite a lot. But it's not a property that has a fan base per se, especially what 40-some-odd years later. (Sadly, the 80s was a long time ago.) If Willow's virtue is that it's so generic that one can do anything with it, why bother with Willow at all? Why not just write your new story?

This is solely my opinion. Right now, I would probably toss it aside. It has nothing to do with your writing skills or story quality. There's just too much of it right now. Hinting that someone is that way would probably work. Having it out in the open, no. Plus, if the story is not contemporary, then especially no. It is about sheltering the YA group. They get that crap from everywhere else. Having a refuge from it in books is important, I believe.

Just read something today about how investors (read big hedge funds) want a return on their investments in companies doing streaming. Netflix is making the same gamble by trying to create enough content before they lose licensing rights to a lot of their best earners.

I do know of a pastor who was gay and married and they adopted two African American boys. I didn't see a lot of them but they seemed to be well adjusted and smart and the kids went from middle school to college and got jobs so the parents were probably doing something right.

Right, I didn't mean to imply it was impossible to write within the narrow confines of Tolkien's worldbuilding, sometimes that's the most fun as a creator. But it is quite a bit easier if you only have a general sketch and can create as you go without worrying much about canon and established worldbuilding.

But what he told Ford earlier on was true: what had been written was largely fantasy along the lines of Buntline stories where you told the story you wanted using existing characters and vaguely similar events. The thing is, My Darling Clementine wasn't really like the real thing, either, and Wyatt would have told him so (but cashed the check gladly).
Tombstone has its flaws but it is pretty damned close to actual events, even the part where Wyatt runs at an ambush and breaks it up in a suicidal rush. Even his enemies (well, the ones that survived) admitted that had happened. Earp was never shot, not even once in his entire life. Crazy life.

Both of these things are true. Ford had wanted to do this movie for a long time and had Wyatt work with him on the idea. But by the time he was actually able to make the film it was many years later.
Part of the reason that Doc Holliday is so wrong in the movie is that out of a desire to make My Darling Clementine, he put a Doc Holliday type in Stagecoach (I mean, literally, it was a southern dentist with a drinking problem and a bad cough who was an incurable romantic). Having done so, Ford felt it would have been repetitive to use the same character again, even so many years later so, we get Victor Mature as Doc Holliday.

One more lesson for fictional writing - show, don't tell. There's NO way you're gonna "show" LGBT stuff in a book that conservatives will want to read, so there's no point for it to be there for that audience. If you think your book can appeal to a liberal or moderate audience, then you can go for "show" and keep it in there...
But really, most YA is just sick of all the LGBTQXYZ123 anyway...make the characters robots or cats and they'll probably prefer it b/c at least they can move past the "identity and sex" garbage...

If you are trying to sell it to anyone in publishing these days, can't be conservative. You'll get points for going woke. But is that how you want to be known. If you are good, and you gotta write a bunch of novels before you get good (not sell them necessarily but write them) you'll find a place. Its a matter of sticking with it. Its a terrible grind. You have to find your voice, and figure out how to make what is in your head, flow down your arm and onto the page. decide whether to be an engineer vs a gardener etc etc

Precisely. Streaming as an alternative to the theater for new movies doesn't work if streaming is trying to deliver Marvel type stuff.
Where streaming works really well is in the purchase side of things, especially when it comes to newer, adult fare. Older people don't want to go to theaters, but they're perfectly willing to plop down $20 to watch it in their home. This is part of what's happening to the Oscar-bait moie.

I've read those stories years ago and even then it struck me as bad melodrama of a tragic hero destined to do evil things. Dystopian Dark Shadows type stuff.
Jack Vance at least had some humor plus persuaded Gary Gygax to adopt his magic system in his Dying Earth series which is a similar dystopia.

The first movie was magnificent, and the set design, props, etc were wonderful through the entire series, but each movie after the first was a major disappointment, all the way through the Hobbit.
Two Towers was one of the worst adaptations of anything I have ever seen, even if incredibly beautiful. They got almost every character so wrong it was nearly comical. They violated the storyline. They raped Tolkien's message and themes.

It happens through places like Amazon and VUDU. They're working well enough to function as solid replacements for DVD sales. It's not enough to make up $100 million in a short fall, but selling a $5 million movie through there? It has the potential to cover a fair amount of costs, especially in an era when Oscar-bound fare like Tar isn't going to get $10 million in theaters.

Don't make me start on an hour-long rant of all that was not just wrong but nearly rape-level violation of Two Towers. It was like they deliberately went out of their way to get everything as wrong as they possibly could. Return of the King was less rapey, but still problematic, and the hour-long ending that couldn't possibly fit in the Scouring of the Shire was just the cherry on top of the sad failure.

I am not into fantasy at all. But, the LoTR movies are great. Yeah, I'm sure they took liberties with the books. Actually, I know since my daughter, who loves fantasy, points that out. However, books and movies are different media. Some of the diehard LoTR fans just can't accept that. I've seen people argue the movies stink because they didn't have Tom Bobamdil.

Finally, someone who agrees with me on LOTR movies. I probably watched the extended edition of Fellowship 20 times, Two Towers a couple times and the Return of the King once. So many changes that were unnecessary and indicated he, and his wife screenwriter, didn't really get Tolkein.
Still, I can see why people liked the films, they were well done, with the occasional plot hole that could have been avoided if he stuck closer to source material, but no worse than the usual contemporary action film. And if you didn't know anything about what was in the book.

Actually that doesn't bother me at all because Tom felt like a jarring part of the story that didn't belong. Yes, it helped explain where the hobbit's Ringwraith-wounding weapons came from (hint: not Aragorn's golf bag of weapons) but it was something which easily can be left out without harming the story at all.
Terminator 3: what the fuck was this shit
I liked 3 quite a bit; it wrapped up the story very well and made sense based on what had gone before. Plus it had some very nice sequences.

Last weekend at breakfast, wifey saw someone who reminded her of the lead male actor in the excellent TV series The Killing, Joel Kinnaman.
We wondered what happened to him, so I searched and saw that he's starring in a fairly popular (8.0 ImDB rating) Apple+ streaming series called For All Mankind -- which sounded like a great concept: deleting Russian space scientist survives (instead of dying in IRL during a surgery in 1965) -- and the Russians land men on the moon before we do.
Then the description starts discussing various identity politics, and I say "I'll bet it's full woke" and proceed to read all the one-star comments. Yep, don't waste our time (no money involved as we pirate everything now except conservative fare that needs financial rewards).

I've been considering saving up my Microsoft Rewards gift cards for a region free UHD player (UHDs are by definition region free, but I just don't want another Blu-ray player on top of my UHD player, it's a space thing) and they cost about $400.
Of course, if I did that, I would buy just so many more movies. I could get Zardoz for less than $150!

If you like British TV, I have found both Acorn and Britbox as a refreshing change of pace and you can get both through Roku or Prime. A lot of it is older which eliminates the woke factor quite a bit.

Lois Bujold wrote a good book "Ethan of Athos" where a planet of male woman hating fanatics founded a planet without women in a remote part. Some 250 years later the ovaries they use to produce kids are wearing out and they order a new set but get back junk and a young doctor has to go out and face those demonic women and save his planet.
At one point he's thrown in with a female merc agent and she asks him why the population on his planet grows so slowly and he says its because the government can't afford the huge social cost of paying the salary of child care providers. He's shocked when he finds that the rest of the galaxy considers this huge hidden tax to the citizens who raise kids fair.

I think I sort of liked the first one, but not enough to bother to see any of the others. Kind of like Divergent or The Mazerunners.
Maybe I don't enjoy YA stuff as much as I thought I do.
Sometimes it is amusing. I watched all CW's The 100 just to see how many times the kids could destroy the entire world and kill everyone on it but themselves.

British TV rarely requires UHD (George Gently series is one exception) so combining a cheap small dvd player plus an upscaling HD tv works quite well. I have noticed some issues with upscaling fast action from some really old series like the b&w BBC Robin Hood from the 50's both overall I am pretty pleased. On computers and electronics, I usually stay about 3 yrs or so behind current tech as the sweet spot of cost and benefit.

But it may be that just staying away and being well read on more standard Western culture history/literature ... would be a better course? Or maybe some can do it all and remain Christian and virtuous?
