Personal note:

When our friend died in 2018, we inherited his little Chihuahua, Son. He had some difficulty adapting and tended to be a one-person dog like many Chihuahuas, but he was loved. He became blind and had to have an eye and several of his teeth removed. He actually seemed to do better with people as he became more disabled. He still pranced around and interacted with the other dogs. But with one eye gone and an ugly eye, along with a tongue that perpetually stuck out of the side of his mouth, he looked sort of shocking.

The day before he died, he spent more time walking around outdoors than usual. In the evening, his back legs collapsed and he lost control of his bladder. He eventually struggle back to his feet, but died in his sleep.

We see in our mind's eye his Daddy welcoming him into his arms.

Saying goodbye to special dogs

Hi, KT--

Thanks for taking over the pet thread. You are doing a great job--plus a stellar job at the other threads you manage. We appreciate all of the COBs so much.

I am a fan of the weekend threads and comment occasionally as Art Rondelet of Malmsey. (Despite the nic, I am a female by birth and identity.) Our rescue dog, Luna, was on a previous pet thread shortly after we adopted her last year. She has now settled in and is a better dog that we imagined she could be.

Here she is welcoming in the Christmas season. My Christmas wish for the Horde is that everyone can find someone--whether human or animal--who greets them with the happiness and affection that Luna greets us with every morning. She is truly a blessing.

Luna looks like a blessing. And thank you for bringing Christmas blessings and cheer to us here at the Pet Thread!

Hello K.T.,

Still lurking on the blog...especially the wonderful Pet Thread! Again I write with sad news, as we just had to put our beloved 14 year old Beagle named Molly down. Two losses in one year is extremely heartbreaking.

Molly came to us at 2 years of age from a pet rescue. We were initially going to foster her, but she knew she had her forever home as soon as she walked through the door. She was smart, sassy and VERY stubborn...just like my wife...which is why they got along so well, I believe. She knew nothing but love, and gave the same. She had me quite well trained...she LOVED when I spoon fed her ice cream, and she knew that whenever mom was chewing, so was she. She, like our boy Salem who we lost in March, loved the beach...not so much the water, just the sand. She loved adventures, whether it was a ride to a faraway place, the nearest amusement park, or just a walk in the woods.

So, like MisHum did for me when Salem passed, my wife would surely be touched if you could put Molly's picture up on an upcoming Pet Thread.

As always, love the blog, and keep up the great work!

Thanks! Much love to all!

Phil and Reene

Molly looks like a wonderful companion. So sorry that you have lost two great friends this year.

Good morning ! This is my bud, Rebel the Dog. He's an American Staffordshire Terrier, and he'll be 8 years old this January. He's a Very Good Boy and I'm Very Proud of him. He loves to visit my Grandsons , going on truck rides, patrolling the neighborhood, barking, running and playing with his friends at Little River Pet Resort or at Laura's House.

However, we don't like squirrels (SQ's), Creatures of the Wild or unvetted canines that may stroll through the neighborhood!

I'm an everyday lurker and sometimes commenter who goes by Rick554! Thanks for the Pet Thread and showcasing some of GODs greatest Pals! And I thank the Good Lord for letting me take care of one of his Dogs. All the best!

6 Here's my cat tale from this past Monday:

Our momma cat disappeared sometime between Saturday and Sunday. She was not at the door first thing in the morning looking for breakfast which is not normal. My wife and I walked the property, calling for her and found nothing.

Then, on Monday my wife went out again while I looked around the garage/shop and under the front porch. My wife was comming up from "the bottoms" and she was smiling. "Where is she?" I asked. My wife pointed to a large tree beyond our property, behind a fence near a soybean field. 20 feet up. She'd been there for two days and nights.

I had to jump one barbed wire fence, cross a dry creekbed, climb up the other side and make a path through heavy brush, while carrying a ladder to reach the tree. What a freaking ordeal. And we've no idea what was after her, or what possessed her to go up that tree.

That's one of nine lives right there. She also hasn't strayed too far from the house since then.

8 My ginormous feral cat buddy Creamsickle (orange and white) hadn't been around for a few weeks until last Saturday when he climbed up on the back fence and called for me. We made eye contact, he ran to our meeting place, and I went out back to hand feed him kitteh treats. He doesn't talk much or let me pet him but I'm apparently the only human he gets close to. I love hanging out with him.

19 Momma cat was very happy to be out of that tree. It wasn't all that cold on Sunday night, but Saturday night which I assume was her first night in the tree it got below freezing, but only for a couple hours right at sunrise.

We live in a rural area, farms, cows, horses. I'm amazed whatever went after her didn't show up on our security system. It was about 1/5 of a mile from our house.

I've taken in two feral cats. One didn't last long. He left within two days and went back to where he came up to me in the first place, at work.

The other was a kitten/near-adolescent my dad brought home after he found him drowning in a culvert during a storm. That was a cat who liked us and stayed with us for several years. But, he was still feral, and he was a maine coon, so huge. Crazy animal. Really nice to the humans, but aggressive and destructive toward objects and other animals. He would jump up on the counter and shatter a glass just for the fun of it.

I've seen it said many times on a smart military blog that I frequent, if cats were really stuck, you'd see their skeletons up in the trees.

Many years ago, we had a big ol' pale yellow cat, Muffin, who one day we found dozens of feet up an old pecan behind the house. Would have been hard to get to with a cherry-picker. Eventually, he got hungry enough, he clambered down.

Our son picked up a feral cat when we lived in Connecticut. He would disappear for days after he brought him home so I named him AWOL. His time away from home would go longer and longer and one time was over three months and then one day he came trotting back through the back deck door to the cat food. This went on for about 3 years and one time he spent six months away from home only to show up again. That was the last time. He left a couple of days after that and we never saw him again. Pretty sure the coyotes got him.

Lady YD wants a dog. I countered with "what about an ocelot?" She didn't go for it, and Joe Mannix told me I was insane, so I guess we're going with "dog."

Since ocelots are a little too real for the Stepford Wives around here, I'm thinking "basset hound." The thing is, they're super-expensive. Like, almost as much as an ocelot.

Does anyone know somewhere I could get find some shady character with a trenchcoat full of cut-rate basset hounds, or something?

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 03, 2022 04:03 PM (oINRc)

39 I was thinking about letting my kittehs be indoor /outdoor cats as that is what my family and I always had growing up. But then I thought about how bad I would feel if something happened to them . Instead I trained them to go for walks with me without a leash. It's like having dogs now who demand their walks.

42 Here... I'd wager it was coyotes. They've been very active for the last couple weeks or so. Guy across the road had one of his horses attacked about a month ago by 2 coyotes. We also caught a pair of German Shepherd's on the security cameras that apparently are "loose" or were dumped somewhere in the area.

The coyotes are particularly aggressive right now.

I checked out all the ones around here, but I have to imagine they have more dogs than they show on these websites. It's always like three or four pictures and descriptions.

I should probably go check them out in person.

But the thing is, bloodhounds and bassets are a specialized breed, and people don't just take them to shelters and leave them. I think I may end up having to steal one, or, G-d forbid... pay retail

46 23 because I have Savannah Cats and you take the good with the bad. They are very cool cats. When J came into my life as an avowed cat hater, he swore he wouldn’t sleep with a cat, nor would they be on furniture or counters (giggle). Flash forward, he bought me Sabi for my birthday 3 years ago when I lost my Nyah girl and both Kovu and I were inconsolable, he makes a comfy part of the bed each night for “the boys” and feeds Sabi ice cream from his spoon. He now gets that Savannah’s understanding of the word “ no” is situational. We clean the counters a lot.

47 When caught on counter, Sugar almost only than her sister Cinnamon, would get picked up immediately and locked down in basement. It kept her off most of time. Cinnamon was more for table getting same treatment. Was funny if she wanted something on table would be like a person knowing 1 paw was basement time.

I had a cat that as a kitten was a bit too rough for his 15 year old sister so I tried the spray bottle. He decided he liked it and would drink from it, and I had to keep one handy for the next 16 years for him.

I have a feeding station on the "breakfast bar" part of the counters that the cats use but they don't go on the rest of the counters. I have enough trees and such that have better altitude.

56 After losing my big kitty Earl in August. His sister Misty who is 13 is so lonely but I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a buddy. So I decided on a teenager after looking at older kitties with personality issues. Misty has her quirks, I had put in an application months ago at a real good shelter and didn’t hear anything. Then a couple of days ago the perfect teenager appeared on their Facebook page. I emailed and said I had an app in for months and no one emailed me and am looking to meet this particular cat. They said my app was approved but made no mention of the cat but said if I saw one I liked to email them. I emailed again and nothing. Today the cat’s picture has adoption pending on her. I’m pissed. I emailed again and they responded and said someone had an application in before me. I’ve had mine in for 2 months and no one even acknowledged it. Doesn’t make sense. Not a happy camper today. Love all the critter pictures today.

I was grievously wounded, almost killed by a Dachshund. I loved that Dachshund. He belonged to my ex-girlfriend, and I was doing some work renovating her basement while she was out of town. I'd stripped all of the carpet off the stairs and cut the lights, when he tripped me... I went down hard, broke my tailbone, and my left thumb, in two places. It looked like a "Z."

Garbage like that was why I went to the city and purebreds for the emergency adoptions. I did pick up a relationship with a sensible rescue shelter later for two cats, both gone now.

Too many liars and Karens, and you aren't in the best of frames of mind. I know, I was in precisely your situation years back when one of my paired girls I had had for a dozen years since grad school died suddenly.

In that case I found a cat at the city pound and next time hearing all the supposed distress about cats abandoned in the recession and still getting the business I did it again. Next time I went to a professional.

67 Was about to put on my loafers to walk outside with the pooch, when I discovered that Daisy (a/k/a "Jaws") had pulled out the insole and chewed it to pieces. I snarled and tried to wap her with the soggy remains. She cowered and looked all guilty. I thought we were past this. She picks up pretty well on what's good and bad, but has relapses.

I'll tell her something is "bad," but I try to avoid ever saying "bad dog." It's not the critter, it's the behavior that's bad. I want her to self-identify as "good."

68 [PART1of3] For those of us who feed feral cats:
My daughter is feeding 6 kittens that were born in a Chili parking lot. They "live/hide" in the storm drains. The Mum has been gone for a while, abandoned them or possibly dead. They are quite large now, beautiful, more like "teenagers". Three of them have now accepted my daughter and come out to greet her as soon as they hear the car and one of them has allowed her to stroke it. There is a 7th female that is not part of the litter but we have seen her at least twice coming to feed.

If we hadn't started to feed them then I imagine they would have followed the typical pattern of scattering in all directions in their search for food. Some might have gotten adopted, others at least become outside cats, sadly one or two could have died (cars, dogs, nasty people).

70 [PART2of3] For those of us who feed feral cats:
Instead they are staying in one place since food comes once a day. My worry is that, as they mature, they will mate (not good as siblings) and soon instead of 6 cats there may be 12-16 cats, a number that will be noticed. If the staff are all not ailurophobic then no problems but if a customer were to complain, for example, then I can envisage Animal Control getting a call, resulting in most of the kitties being rounded up and 'disposed of'. We don't have the financial resources to feed an additional 10-20 cats.

Cats at least tend to like shoes because they are cat sized and smell like you. Outside of teething most aren't chewer-uppers. It's easiest to modify behaviors if you provide a valid substitute - I assume gnawing is a standard dog need like cats scratching, can you keep something she's allowed to gnaw on near where the shoes are.

Any one of you had a similar experience, thoughts, suggestions? We have done this a few times but it was always one feral cat per occasion and most became inside cats at my house or, rarely, someone else's home. We have 'over 15' inside cats so cannot adopt any more. The last 5 were kittens, 2 born inside (pregnant lady cat), 2 were found in my improvised outside shelter on the back porch (old, cracked pet carrier well wrapped in plastic) where a neighbor's hen had been laying an egg daily, and one we call Marty, was a Walmart parking lot dump. All 5 and the Mum have been fixed - EXPENSIVE!!

There are sometimes TNR (trap neuter release) groups that will swarm in and fix everyone in a colony and have access to cut rate neutering. I've heard of cities or shelters loaning trap no harm capture cages and people doing it themselves. Kitten Lady on You Tube and some other rescue groups film themselves doing this. My brother did this to a cat he was feeding on a rooftop a few years ago.

80 Someone please help me understand this.
I can understand someone having a dog, maybe two to keep the other company.

But five? Seriously. FIVE FUCKING DOGS.

The reason why I ask is because someone who has done as much as possible to avoid having any pets, I live between two homes where both owners have five dogs each. That makes ten yapping, hyperactive psychotic dogs that will disturb the peace for at half hour at least if I simply just go outside.

Do you dog owners hate your neighbors? Do you ignore the constant din of racket these pests make? Do you know that their sound is akin to loud rap music and car alarms as far as ambiance?

I moved out of the city to avoid irritating noise and I get this.

84 Cimpino - well I have 3 ferals and mine are TNR’d. They live on my deck and have heated housing with covered heated feeding station. 3 boys. If there is a cat rescue group in your daughters area she should look them up. They can be trapped and fixed and then released back into the wild. Most likely they will either succumb to the elements or be eaten by coyotes but in the meantime they will make lots and lots of babies. Animal control won’t round up feral cats unless one is injured. They are free range and their fate is left up to good hearted people who want to get them at a minimum fixed. A rescue group would be able to give you info. If not try Ally Cat Allies. They are a national organization and can maybe find someone for you.

85 There are several feral cats be-bopping around casa JT.

I dumpster dive in my landlord's dumpster and take out anything that the bird's will eat.

Anything with meat I throw over the fence for the cats; that is if the birds don't get to it first.

I have 2 - 5 gallon buckets filled with water to replenish my birdbath. The cats would drink from them, but it was a chore for them (up on their hind legs.) So, I have a 2 gallon bucket for the cats.

You might try bribery / toys to get them to see you as a friend than as a threat. It might still be noisy if you go out, but a happy noise is better than angry noises.

The dog growing up that was the most 'trouble' to us kids was an Irish setter named Patrick, though he never barked. But if a baseball fell in his yard he would run around with it for a long time while we chased it and sometimes take it into his garage through a dog door and we had to find a small boy to squeeze in there and get it. (This was in one baseball per neighborhood days). He just had so much energy to burn.

I hate door bolters, especially as I have been 29 for a while. I made a deal with my last super curious / hunter that I would give him chances to explore if he didn't bolt and he would mimic turning the doorknob with his paws when he wanted out but understood if I told him no that time. He eventually did get killed by coyotes, but he had to go out and patrol the perimeter every so often. He did overwatch every time me and the others were outside.

102 Pet news from the community I live in: On Nov 9th, an officer responded to a report of a fight at the XX Dog Park. Cornelius D, age 73, stated he entered the dog park with his dog and was met by a female who informed him that his dog was too big to be in that particular section of the dog park. Cornelius stated he told her to mind her own business when the female proceeded to flip him off. Cornelius then called the female an expletive name, and the female called her boyfriend to inform him of the situation. According to Cornelious, Richard B, age 80, showed up and grabbed him, and cut his arm in the midst of making contact. Cornelious says the male was attempting to strike him in the groin. Cornelious admitted he struck the male, knocking him to the ground, and then the male and female left. When officers went to get the other side of the story, Richard B stated his girlfriend, Nancy W, age 70, had told Cornelius his dog was over the weight limit for that section of the dog park. After the two had their dispute, she called her boyfriend. Richard claimed when he arrived and tried to make contact with Cornelius, he was “sucker punched”.

I live in a single-entrance community way outside of town on a branch road with only six homes. Everyone has acreage and plenty of place to dispose of interlopers - if crims could even find the place.

The ironic thing is, the folks who have the worst dogs and seem to enjoy listening to the cacophony claimed that they moved out into this area away from the D/FW area "to get away from the noise".

The previous owner had a meth-head son who played loud rock music, raced cars and fired off guns all day and night (because of the meth). The noisy dog neighbors were super grateful that the noise ended when the idiot moved away when his mom sold the property.

I even replaced a noisy outdoor heatpump to quiet things down (it was as loud as a WW2 bomber taking off)

You loved each of them best when they were with you -- as individuals.

127 I see that I misspelt my sig: Cimpino instead of the correct Ciampino. Serves me right for using cached credentials.

131 About feral cats....

Our momma cat was obviously a "pet" and when she got knocked up she was cast out. When she first showed up at our place she was like any other housecat... would allow us to pet her, hung out with us, etc. At the time we didn't know she had 3 kittens; 2 males and one female.

The kittens all started off feral. One still is, but he'll rub against your leg if you've got food. The female is just skittish and will come inside and crash on the guest bed. The other male is an "inside/outside" cat. He'll do whatever the fuck he wants... and is a good mouser, so he gets a pass.

They're more or less "socialized." In fact, this fall 3 of them would chill out with us on the deck while we had cocktails and I had a cigar. Each has "a spot."

All are fixed. Had shots, etc. They're pretty chilled for cats. No weirdness inside and they don't fight with each other.

I even replaced a noisy outdoor heatpump to quiet things down (it was as loud as a WW2 bomber taking off)

That is very generous of you.
I'll keep that in mind if I have no luck with TNR help around here.
