Europe is threatening to frown at Twitter if Elon Musk closes all the company's European offices and tells the tiny-minded fascists of the EU to take a hike. (Tech Crunch)
For "appropriateness of the expertise and resources allocated" read: "Shuttering local offices and canning EU staff will be frowned upon - hard."
That idiocy is Tech Crunch's own wording, but it's understandable because EU officials actually said this:
For those platforms that the Commission will designate as very large online platforms, the risk management obligations also include a strong component on the appropriateness of the resources allocated to managing societal risks in the Union. Among other matters, the Commission will scrutinise the appropriateness of the expertise and resources allocated, as well as the way they organise their compliance function.
The appropriate thing to do is for Musk to close down all operations in Europe and direct users at a US-based portal to pay their $8.

It's not like Europe is going to create its own social network.

Twitter has announced it is granting amnesty to all accounts previously banned for reasons other than actually breaking the law or persistent spam.

I strongly suspect that the records of the former Bureau of Censorship and Intimidation contain so much bullshit that they can't even begin to selectively undo the damage of the past four years.

The mass reinstatements start next week; no indication yet how long it will take to complete.

The usual suspects say that this is the three hundred and seventeenth sign of the Apocalypse which seems to be running seriously behind schedule at this point.

Which in my opinion is good news for Microsoft.
Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time: IBM is suing Micro Focus for allegedly reverse-engineering CICS to create its own Enterprise Server product... Close to 20 years ago. (The Register)

CICS was first released in 1969. Micro Focus was founded in 1976, and while I couldn't find exactly when the first version of their Enterprise Server was released, it has been quite a while. Not sure if this sort of suit has any de facto expiry on it the way trademarks do.

16 Trying to catch up on a lot of stuff my former co-worker left undone. Things I'm finding that I didn't know she had slacked on, as those things were not ever part of my job. Computer crap. Updating price books and such. Time consuming, and annoying because the program is glitch-y.

Takes a lot of time away from my regular tasks and we don't have a lot of employees so playing catch up every day

Think I'm okay with the S model over the U model, as it's not like I'm doing a ton of multisystem gaming.

I work with people who constantly put in 12+ hour days, 5 days a week, for like 7 month spans, i have no clue how the hell they do it. (For some it's like 14-15 hour days for that time)

I did like 14 hour days for about 2 months once, with a week break in the middle, and that was my very limit. Though I also had anywhere from 2 to 3 hours of travel based on the way the trains ran added to that.

74 Something that won't be moving during a rail strike people don't think of. I was stretching my legs at one of those little picnic table areas off I40 a trip or two back. Looking south, I was watching a west bound train, longest one I ever saw, four locomotives pulling, one bringing up the rear. All shipping containers, no doubt empties, heading back to port. Truckers hate to dead head, so empty containers go back by rail. Ships won't sail unless loaded, so there they sit until containers arrive. The same dock cranes load empties and the inbound full ones, and they get tied up. Bottleneck.

Went to one of the bigger area ones. The dealer was evidently a newbie, with The Guy in the Suit (the pit boss) hovering over her, making her nervous. And she was wearing a damn mask. Hard to understand her, and you want to see facial expression even on the grizzled vets. Played for an hour, went over to the travel center slot parlor, left there up $50, had a meal and went home.

My wife had some ailment in November of 2019 that gave her severe respiratory distress AND a huge jump in BP. I mixed up a low dose of viagra in a water bottle. She sipped it, took her BP, lathered, rinsed, repeated until it dropped. She had to do it for about a week.

The entire point of that story is that literal interpretation of directives can have unintended consequences. But that also, robots/computers are very literal things.

The problem with drones/robots is that they allow for a certain disconnection from the situation they are involved in. That can be good if it means the operator can not get caught up in the moment and do something tragic, but it also allows for widescale slaughter if that is what the operator wants.

I argued with someone once: if all of this is a happy coincidence. That the right chemicals were in the right place at the right time. That they came together in just the right way to form life.
