Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

mannixape2.jpg

Institutional Gresham

Most people who have been through an economics course will have heard of Gresham's Law - the idea the "bad money chases out good." When you have "good" money (like a silver coin) and "bad" money (like a zinc coin) with the same face value, the bad money will dominate and the good money will be withdrawn from circulation. It gets crowded out by the bad money even when both remain legal tender and valid for trade.

I was chatting this weekend with fellow moron YD and he had a notion about a corollary to Gresham's Law as it applies to institutions: that bad people chase out the good. The causes are quite different of course, but the phenomenon does not seem to be an unreasonable observation. As institutions grow and bad people come in, the problems tend to grow and you could end up with no good people at all.

The reasons for this are likely two-fold as near as I can tell. One is in-group preference and the other is out-group despair (or contempt). The first will happen over time, most heavily at the beginning of the transition. The bad person in charge of a business team, for example, will bring in more bad people with whom he gets along or agrees. They will spill over into other divisions and repeat the process. Eventually, the bad people will dominate a plurality or majority of areas and then will cascade through the whole organization until it's full of bad people.

While this is going on, the environment becomes unbearable for good people. Good people get nowhere and find their work subverted by (or merely enriching) bad people. The good people check out. They quit working there, or do the minimum, or won't go to work there in the first place. Assuming you have the skills and aren't a monster, do you want to work for an outfit that is populated with monsters? Increasingly, the answer to that question will be "no." The bad people get in, expand, and crowd out the good people. The good people exit and new good people don't enter as much - all while the concentration of bad people continues to increase. The good ones that stick around or come in new are either subverted and turned or accomplish nothing in terms of organizational culture. They put in their nine hours and go home.

This appears to happen throughout organizations of any size. From government to academia to corporate America to the various charities, they have all degraded over the years, and the degradation has been accelerating. This is perhaps how the hollowing out and total subversion of institution after institution has occurred: the bad are not removed from the organization (fired, "managed out," etc.) and they keep hiring their own until they achieve critical mass and then suddenly they're in charge. The good keep leaving until they are nowhere to be found and "new blood" of a different variety will find no toehold.

No large organization can be completely devoid of good people, but they can appear to be if the good go to ground. It appears to be that the good have, by and large, gone to ground. Perhaps once those organizations fail and collapse, they can be replaced and the now-missing good people will get a chance to try again.

7 I am seeing an interesting trend where people are FINALLY beginning to notice that the left is the establishment. I men we have known it for a long time but there are signs that this fact is starting to penetrate brains at large.

All those "resistance" types who are wearing wierd hair colors in "protest" of the world are simply aligning themselves with the mainstream culture. You cannot rebel by echoing the voice of megacorporations, the law, the government, the popular culture, the entertainment, etc on and on. The more you "fight the man" these days, the more you ARE the man.

10 Follows from the thought that institutions are made up of those dedicated to the institution's purpose, and those that are dedicated to the institution itself.

The former are driven out by the latter, over time.

36 I would say it's not so much "bad" people vs "good" people, but bad ideas vs. good ideas.

Bad ideas are by their very nature inflexible--they can never be amended or edited--and the people holding those ideas tend to be equally inflexible.

Once the bad ideas become policy, there is no turning back.

37 "Perhaps once those organizations fail and collapse, they can be replaced and the now-missing good people will get a chance to try again."

History, and experience shows that there is only *one* way that this slide can be turned around, and we are seeing it play out in real time with Twitter. *One* *Man* with power and a vision has to be able to take control, and he has to impose his vision on the organization and ruthlessly eliminate all those in the organization who oppose him. This may sound unrealistic, but in crazy times when an organization is on the verge of collapse due to its past insanity (such as twitter losing $4 million per day) this becomes much easier than at other times; and if it doesn't happen, the organization simply collapses over time. (See Sears, or KMart - Disney is now headed down that path)

No group of shareholders, no Board, no "majority of stakeholders" could ever have renewed Twitter the way Musk has done in only 2 weeks. The short term pain was too great to accept. I have reluctantly concluded that what is true for businesses is also true for Government.

It seems that corporations have a natural lifespan, and slowly die off as the incompetent slowly rot the institutions from the inside out. Sears? K-Mart? Woolworths? We are witnessing J.C. Penney's demise, I think.

There are larger examples, of course, say, Gulf + Western.

Tl;dr is that tax depreciation on buildings often exceeds income they generate, though the real value of the property is increasing over time. Sets you up for a large capital gains tax in the long run so it's not like you never pay taxes on it, but it's very efficient from a compounding returns perspective.

Anderson Cooper was featured in communications classes as a dual ethical problem: 1) he was a "fact checker" for Channel One, which pumped ads (with some MTV-style news) at teens in exchange for supplying communication equipment to lower-income schools and 2) used forged credentials to gain access to rebels fighting the Burmese government, which was packaged for broadcast on Channel One. But who cares that he's a duplicitous ass who illegally crosses borders! CNN hired him, thinking he'd draw younger viewers who recognized him as a "reporter" from force-fed "news."

Now the new management wants to be a news channel, and the various opinion-givers are outraged. "Balance" is bad.

91 It seems that corporations have a natural lifespan, and slowly die off as the incompetent slowly rot the institutions from the inside out.

I don't know if its a law but there is a pretty standard repeated pattern:

The founder is exciting, innovative, and driven, creating something amazing. While they live, the business thrives and leaves its competition behind.

Second generation the founder retires or is deceased, their children or successor takes over. They are interested in and honor the founder's principles, but aren't as driven or innovative, they become settled and comfortable with their success and fear change. The business coasts on reputation and its quality.

Third generation, the next group takes over. They have no sympathy with the founder's vision or ideas. They are not driven by love of the business or its principles, they push for changes and move away from what made the business work and tend to be very willing to try out stuff that younger people propose for the company and the business begins to decline.

95 A combo of bad ideas like Vatican II and the systematic recruitment of communists and gays into positions of power wrecked the Church from the '60s on.

To the point where we are with an actual antipope in Francis. (Not note, because he is a walking disaster but because Benedict's resignation was flawed and he is still Pope.)

The difference here between say, a company, is that while the hierarchy can make it very difficult for an individual to practice their faith, they can't make it impossible.
I'm not sure if that translates into countries, though.

And the good ideas are making a comeback.

Happened at my old employer. There was a merger between the owner of my unit (Michigan) with an East Coast company that brought in a lot of Top Men from the same business schools. When the smoke cleared, people were in jail or plea-bargained and our owner pretty much handed off his company because of all the decisions the Top Men created or exacerbated.

I have to say, though, that as awful as that was, it's worse when it's a public institution riddled with cronyism. Have seen it first-hand with school districts. Superintendent hires friends and family (funny anti-nepotism rules are worked around).

Well say you have multiple Roman denarii, each with the same face value but different metal purity. How do you reasonably determine the purity of the currency? You can't. Consequently, the sensible thing to do is to treat all of the currency as being in its most debased form. If anyone is able to discern and take advantage of the discrepancy in purity, the process of doing so is removing that purer currency from circulation as though it were the low purity currency, and converting it into its more valuable component parts.

Hence bad money chasing out good.

This is particularly true of the end of the clip, in which he says the Russians are in the process of defenestrating themselves, in part because of demographics, and in part because the Ukes are helping the process. He then says "hard to go wrong with that", and that's where I disagree. Will Russia break up? Yes, I think so. Will it be peaceful? Hard to say, but there are certainly possible ways it could go very wrong.

156 This definitely was my experience as a conservative working in corporate media for about 40 years. For the first part of it, even the liberals I worked with were trained to "put that hat on the hook" when they came to work and stick by old school principles -- If you read this about yourself in the morning, no matter how bad it looked, would you think it was at least fair? Would your side of the story be unalloyed by anything but the "he or she said" part?

I noticed a shift during the Clarence Thomas hearings and the Clinton campaign, not just in the national media, but in the play it got at the newspaper where I worked. But things really lurched in the Bush v Gore days, and at that point I realized that if I wanted to maintain a career, I needed to not even *wear* my "hat" to work. Laid low for years until I couldn't rationalize it anymore. Walked away for the sake of my self-respect.

There are frictions involving melting down coins and meticulous weighing. In practice, the Romans got away with massive debasement for centuries, their currency effectively operated like fiat, until the Crisis of the Third Century, when the inflation occurred all at once.

Absent effective arbitrage mechanisms(which force currencies more rapidly towards their commodity value if commodity backed) asset-backed currencies behave rather similarly to fiat over time. They act as arbitrary markers of a certain value rather than their commodity value.

Yes, comparing weights is relatively easy. But in ancient times, coinage could be rather crude and not always the uniform sizes we are used to. If two coins are the same weight, you have to figure out a way to measure density to know the materials it is made of. Hence the reason lead was used so much, as it's weight closely mimics gold - but it's soft.

It takes a moral and religious people. Those aren't just trigger words. To be moral, one must love the Law of God and find joy in following God's Law. (ref: Psalms)

Those who are moral also have a transcendent code, unlike the unregenerate who have a field expedient value system that favors whoever is asserting their values as the "standard".

Valuing and understanding the civilizational preserving aspects of God's Law leads one to discernment and the rejection of those (eg. politicians) who eschew if not hate the Law of God and thus pursue their own fallen and carnal interests - to the harm of many.

Capture kills the organization if the goals of the capturing identity are orthogonal to the organization's purpose.

In practical terms, this means that distinctly American values are no longer the primary source of identity for most Americans.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at November 23, 2022 12:01 PM (tBR6g)

For most of history, people weren't able to determine the purity of currency in a "reasonable" fashion. As in the labor involved was generally not worth it in terms of time and expertise. Even if you could determine the purity of a coin, you'd still need to melt it down to take advantage of the difference.

The extraction process is a type of arbitrage and really only begins to show up effectively in the last few hundred years. Classical economics tended to assume things had always been done that way and so the conclusions don't actually apply to regimes where arbitrage isn't possible. Rothschild made a bunch of money off of discrepancies in currencies and gold values.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at November 23, 2022 12:07 PM (eYoxG)

199 Can any constitutional republic like ours NOT descend into tyranny?

Tyranny is the natural state of man. Sometimes its less terrible than others, and very rarely sometimes its a good thing (a wise and just king) but eventually every people degrades into being subject to a powerful leader. Always.

Why? We're sinful human beings. That means sinful leaders take too much power, that means sinful humans corrupt the system we have, and that sinful people cannot be trusted with liberty and selecting leaders. Eventually, because we are not the virtuous people that a republic requires to function it is inevitable that we lose our liberties and surrender our rights to a powerful force that protects us and just makes life easier.

I did it when I was a kid with a paper route. US coinage (dimes, quarters, and halves) was 90% silver through 1964, then it turned to copper, nickel and zinc. When I got my paper route in 1969, there was a still a whole lot of silver coinage in circulation, and I would go through my change bag every week and pull out all of the silver and save it. (still got a couple bags of it around) All of the old silver coins had pretty much disappeared by 1975,

In ancient times, there were always a few who knew how to determine compositoni, and they could make quite a nice profit by culling high value coinage out of circulation.

208 > Everything is lowering in quality as they cut corners and reduce costs.

This is true, but part of the issue is how screwed up the supply chain is. Manufacturers are having to scramble to buy supply. That means they're having to go to suppliers they haven't trusted enough before or used before. QA is having to work overtime because they're having to do much more spot checking because so many products are out of tolerance.

If you go from 1/10,000 widgets being out of tolerance to 1/200, that means you have to check a LOT more often to be able to catch the duds.

Most companies simply aren't built to check as often as they are being forced to.

In addition to this, a lot of places are being forced to lower their standards because nobody has product that meets their standards, if they can find it at all.

Assuming the paper money isn't redeemable into some other form, it does not. There is no arbitrage mechanism to force the currency to its "true value" in terms of goods, because the value at any given time is arbitrary.

For most of history, people weren't able to determine the purity of currency in a "reasonable" fashion. As in the labor involved was generally not worth it in terms of time and expertise. Even if you could determine the purity of a coin, you'd still need to melt it down to take advantage of the difference.

Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead!

For quite awhile, people would also cheat by shaving bits off of the edges of specie, to later be melted down and traded. Easy and fast. The serrated edges of coins make it a lot easier to see when coins have been shaved.

The Mint has still put out specialty silver sets for collectors, but those are never circulated.

Today, drop a modern penny (mostly zinc) on a counter top and listen to the difference in the sound if you drop a wheat penny (mostly copper) Today's coinage is sad monopoly money.

This is not just theory by the way, people hold back pre 1982 pennies and pre '65 silver too.

Putin's problem is that he can unleash hell on *civilian* centers, but the Luftwaffe in 1940 proved that *doesn't* impact a countries ability to resist invasion, it just makes them fight harder. The power has got to be used against military targets, and yet for a variety of reasons (disbursed infantry tactics being one of them, no air superiority being another) Russia has not been able to do this. So if he escalates against civilians, he Increases western involvement without damaging the Uke's ability to fight.

The loss of Kherson was a major disaster for the Russians - all of Crimea is now threatened because of it. And dreams of going on to Odessa are now dead.

Posted by: lin-duh at November 23, 2022 11:18 AM

I dunno. Maybe I am different, but I have always lived by the old adage: "It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."

There have been many times at work where I have been extremely aggravated and frustrated that my ideas for improving processes or efficiency in the department have been ignored. For most of them, I don't push them to get credit, I push them because they are the right things to do.

I did get upset when there was a stakeholders team setup to address an issue that I had been pushing, which for years had been falling on deaf ears, and they did not bother to include me in this team. But the leader of the team ended up kicking ass on the project and implemented an excellent efficient process that we use today. That's all I wanted. The efficient process in place.

Would it have been nice to get credit for the ideas? Sure. But my job is finally much more efficient because this process is now official department process. That's what matters to me.

283 History, and experience shows that there is only *one* way that this slide can be turned around, and we are seeing it play out in real time with Twitter. *One* *Man* with power and a vision has to be able to take control, and he has to impose his vision on the organization and ruthlessly eliminate all those in the organization who oppose him. [ . . . ]

No group of shareholders, no Board, no "majority of stakeholders" could ever have renewed Twitter the way Musk has done in only 2 weeks.

If the movie "Jobs" (with Ashton Kutcher) is accurate, this is exactly how Steve Jobs turned around Apple. The company was failing and they begged him to come back. He agreed but then immediately fired almost everyone on the board who he knew had been either against him before or he could not trust to see through his vision. The rest is history.

286 All the talk about 1st and 2nd and 3rd generations running a company I remember from college learning about economics 101. I had a good professor who talked about this from experience. I doubt they talk about this today in the classroom. More like how women are as good as men in all jobs in the company.

287 Hayek made the same point, of bad people driving good out of an organization, talking about why government in general, and socialism in particular, eventually becomes authoritarian. As the leaders insist the group do worse and worse things, more people say "I can't do that" and leave. What remains are the people who WILL do that. And then the leaders ratchet it up some more. Lather, rinse, repeat. I do not recall Hayek offering a solution, other than having Eisenhower and Patton bomb them into submission.
