Well we packed up and headed down the mountain at breakneck speed. We made the descent to our car in an hour. In some of the high grade switchbacks I was taking 12 foot strides. That was scary. Just running down a mountain with a full pack.

I'm guessing BS in CompSci at best. Probably a lot of "certificates" in network-this-and-that from MicroSoft and such, too.

Actual BS/MS/PhD in EE or CompE? Few.

Though there are schools giving out BAs in engineering, now. I have no idea what that noise is about. An MBA path for the somewhat-technical?

Getting a yearly flu shot is pretty much standard for anyone who works in healthcare.

If you don't work in around sick people or take public transportation, you're prolly fine. Flu shots do help lessen infection and death from seasonal influenza. And those of us who don't have the option of being in the laptop class, well, we still have jobs to do on site.

Different lake but same basic situation -

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

Yep, snow was driven west to east across FROZEN Lake Erie, until it hit the Buffalo shoreline and then boom.

The park accross from my In-Laws house was used as a snow dump by the National Guard. The number of missing cars that showed up when all the snow melted in late spring ran into the teens.

Actually WNY is gorgeous in the spring and fall, very temperate. Summers suffer from high humidity coming up from the gulf...of all places. And winter is...well, winter. You deal with it.

262 One time I was running an analysis at work and the Fortran kept failing. Checking everything first because user error was always likely I gave up and called up the help desk. Turns out the error was snow. What! it's like 70 degrees here? How does this even make sense?

Well this Rube Goldberg machine of a Fortran code had to write to and read data from a tape because the IBM mainframe it was written for only had a few Mb of user space. The tape was located in a facility 1000 miles away in Colorado and they were snowed in. A robotic arm had to pick a tape and push it in but they couldn't get in to turn mr. robot on.

I looked at the 20 year old spaghetti Fortran and decided I'd have to change hundreds and hundreds of lines in dozens of routines. Nope. So I told my boss that the analysis will have to wait until somebody can shovel the snow out of the way.

so no, backwards, a flueve is a river and riviere is a stream. It's a riviere that flows into a flueve.

I guess the Riviere is just a place where a lot of rivers and streams flow into the mediteranean?

There is an alternative version, where the Indians of the area saw/had herds along a creek that feeds into Lake Erie...hence Buffalo Creek.

Somehow that was connected to naming the area Buffalo.

But I don't buy into that story. Buffalo Creek is a nasty little tributary...especially in relation to the Niagara just a few miles away.
