Memo from an Analyst, Evaluating Amazon's Investment Risk in Rings of Power: We Fell Asleep During Three of the Four Episodes We Watched. Update, ICYMI: The Must-See "MAGA Racist Anti-Elf Migrant Worker Rally" Scene
Note this is not an analyst at Amazon, but an analyst of Amazon, working for a firm that analyzes companies and issues investment reports.
Still, it's amuzzzing.
Amazon analyst Tom Forte was already concerned about the performance of the company's Lord of the Rings TV show "The Rings of Power." But after he watched several episodes, he became even more worried about the $1 billion project.
"We fell asleep during our first viewings of episodes one, three, and four and have not watched episode five yet due to a combination of not enjoying the first four episodes and a busy schedule," Forte, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, wrote in a recent note to investors.
...
Forte said that he was originally hopeful ahead of the show's launch, but has gotten more bearish as the weeks progress.
You mean he's hibernating?
As of September 28, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the show's average critic's score was an impressive 84% but its audience score was a lackluster 38%, the analyst wrote. Going into the launch, he expected the audience score to start low, as hardcore Tolkien fans were likely to be the first to watch it and likely to be most critical, then improve over time as more casual fans got involved. But that hasn't happened.
"Nearly one month after its September 1 launch and five episodes in on an eight-episode season, the audience response (as measured by Rotten Tomatoes) is far worse than we initially expected (as suggested by the critics' warm reception) and is not improving (as we had, initially, anticipated)," Forte explained to investors.
In case you missed it: the woke Rings of Power, aka We Had Rangz, featured a MAGA Rally, in which a racist Trumpian rabble rouser stirred the racist passions of Men against the Elf Immigrant Laborers (do elves really migrate from place to place to do day-labor?), shouting that "elves come on ships" "to take your trades" (they took our jerbs!) and that their queen is an "elf-lover."
Nice touch.
Make Angmar Great Again!!!
A few updates on Bros, the $23 million base budget (prints, advertising, financing will double that) gay rom com that bombed this past weekend:
John Sexton quotes this hair-raising interview from the film-makers from the New Yorker.
As a bit of context, I've heard a debate before whether depictions of "the gay experience" should represent the real gay experience, which can be extremely raunchy and gross, or if it should be bowdlerized to make it safe and acceptable for straights.
I've mostly heard that debate from garrett.
This movie apparently decided to go mostly for The Full Gay.
And yet the filmmakers are surprised that "straight people" from "certain areas of the country" didn't show up to throw money at it.
Early in the new movie "Bros," our cranky hero, Bobby (Billy Eichner), a podcaster suffering from chronic relationship phobia, sits at his microphone and rants. "So, these big movie producers came to me and said, 'We want you to write a rom-com about a gay couple,' " he says. A producer, in a flashback, asks Bobby for something a straight guy would go see, a movie that "shows the world that gay relationships and straight relationships are the same. Love is love is love!" "Love is love is love?" Bobby retorts, wincing at the regurgitation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony speech. "No, it's not. That's bullshit! . . . Our friendships are different. Our sex lives are different. Our relationships are different." Minutes later, as if to prove the point, we see Bobby shaving his rear end for a guy on a hookup app who demands an "ass pic."...
That early scene with the fictitious producer points to the question that animates much of what follows: To what extent can you map a gay love story onto the classic rom-com formula, or vice versa? The film, co-written by Eichner and its director, Nicholas Stoller, references--and wrestles with--rom-com tropes. Bobby watches "You've Got Mail" on the couch, but instead of AOL, he's got Grindr. On his first date with Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), his studly love interest, they go see a movie--and then wind up having a foursome at a "gender-reveal orgy."...
Even as Eichner has positioned the movie as a breakthrough pop-culture event--one that might show "all the homophobes on the Supreme Court that we want gay love stories," as he yelled at the MTV Video Music Awards, in August--the movie itself seems to be questioning the value of entering the mainstream. As Bobby laments to a weirdly supportive heterosexual couple, "Gay sex was more fun when straight people were uncomfortable with it."
Oh, no problems there, we still are, we still are.
I mean, I get that they're trying for the "raunchy wild sex comedy, but for gays" angle, but that's obviously not going to play with the straights, so... why are you, as they say, up my ass about not wanting to see it?
I have to correct: in the sidebar and in a post, I said that this guy did a show called Akshually... with Billy the Asshole where he "read Wikipedia articles with leftwing political talking points at people."
I had that wrong.
I was actually merging in my head two different obnoxious, effeminate leftwing jagoffs.
For the "Akshually" part of it, I was thinking of this guy, who does a leftwing talking points show called "Adam Ruins Everything:"
Yes, they took that feller there and made him the " " " star " " " -- the " " " romantic lead " " " in fact -- of a romcom.
And then it failed. Huh! Who could have guessed.
By the way, the first guy above, Adam Conover, isn't gay, apparently. Mind. Blown.
But you can see how I conflated these two Huge Internet-Based Talents in my head. You can see that, right? I'm looking at them right now and I'm still not entirely sure they're different assholes.
And you can also see how this movie bombed -- who the hell looked at this obnoxious femmy Charisma Vacuum prick and thought, oh yeah, there's Leading Man material for you right there?
I think I'm going to produce a swashbuckling Latinx romance picture starring David French and Bill Kristol called Los Piratos Del Corazon.
Especially for a... dare I say this...? gay romcom. You know, gays are kind of... unforgiving in the looks department.
Garrett's always complaining about that.
Matt Walsh made a point that I failed to close the deal on: The biggest audience for romcoms is straight women. And every audience for a movie connects to the main character through a little bit of projection and identification. If any of you men -- and women, too -- tell me you don't think "What if...?" when you're watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, then I name thee liar. I Name Thee Liar, Sirrah!
So, Matt Walsh wonders -- what is there for the primary audience of romcoms, straight women, to identify with or project themselves onto in this movie? This annoying, nasty, condescending gay twerp? Are female viewers supposed to think, "Yeah, I bet it would be great to get my d*** s***** by that cute guy" ?
It's a hard lift. Not that you can't empathize with someone different than you -- you can -- but the primary draw of the movie, the "What if that were me?" factor, isn't present.
This is the same ask SJW "entertainments" keep demanding of their would-be audiences -- that you not treat them as actual entertainment, but that you treat them as Homework Assignments and charitable donations of your time and money.
And it doesn't help that the movie has gone hard into the paint into the raunchier, nastier, more recherché side of gay sexuality. Probably best to offer newbies the bunny slopes and not the black diamonds, first time on the slopes.
And, from the sidebar, Chris Gore's take-no-prisoners review:
He's annoyed by several parts. One part he's annoyed by is the trailer, in which, at the end, Billy Eichner says "Straight people are over, they had a good run." Eh, I don't care about that. Typical crap.
The thing he's really annoyed by is that a running "debate" in the movie is whether it's too young to start sermonizing about homosexuality to children at age seven, and of course, at the end of the movie, the "debate" is resolved when some couple Billy has been arguing with takes their seven year old to the "LGBT History Museum" that Billy is (of course) some kind of doyen or director at.
The message. You're soaking in it!

It began with the forging of the great films. Threads were given by Tolkien, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Rights were granted to Jackson, great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else desire quality. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a master flop. And into this show he poured his money, his greed and will to dominate all film. One show to ruin them all.

Just reading the short description of the movie made me cringe and my stomach turn over. It's just so filthy and evil! No respect for the person- just a body . So sad.
Netflix had a gay take on sex in the city with Doogie Howser. I watched a bit- it started good and sort of sweet but once they get in to the "hook up " world (that is a Yuge part of male gay life, IMO) it became unwatchable.
Billy Eichorn and the other whiners criticizing straightt people for rejecting Bros should remember that Family Matters prominently featured a gay couple and it was an extremely popular show.

It was noted here recently, but you need to start understanding that children are being introduced to gay male sex before they are learning about normal human sexuality between a man and a woman. Rainbow flags, pride commercials, etc.

Regarding "Bros", it's pretty obvious to me that even the butt-fuckers are tired of hearing about "The Love That Won't Shut The Fuck Up For 3 Seconds" (FKA "The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name").
If even the butt-fuckers are tired of hearing their friends go on about butt-fucking at the top of their lungs whilst sitting in a crowded Starbucks where only half the occupants are actual butt-fuckers, then maybe it might be time to, I don't know, pull back a little on the 24/7/365 butt-fucking talk?

Gay themed rom-coms also don’t work because they necessarily lack an important element of all straight rom-coms: the “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” element. If you take away that, and also take away what this post correctly identifies as a projection element, then you have nothing left but soft gay porn. Hard pass for 99% of the country. It’s like a fantasy-themed dragon movie … except without fantasy or dragons.

It has not really lived up to its potential, but now that the in your face extreme woke aspects have been outed and sidelined, the story is at least watchable.
The show runners ran this the exact opposite of what they should have. The woke parts should have been slowly rolled out over time and after the first episode got people invested in the program.
But, when you have every single prominent couple mixed race, the question has to be, how can any races be left when every couple is mixed and thus creating race neutral children?

I had this revelatory thought the other day; there's an old saw "his ass was dragging".
A gay with a prolapsed colon might actually use this phrase unironically.
I remember a rant from Oregon Muse, before he was a Cob, about the extra ailments gays experience as part of their lifestyle. I asked him about it one day; he didn't recall writing it. It was Doc 0 style bullet points; sadly my search-fu of the comments was weak.
So. A movie that gets into the nitty-gritty of the downsides? Gee, I wonder why it ain't popular to discuss them.

I have mild enthusiasm for Billy Eichner as a dude who makes mild entertainment with some edge. But wow you peel back the lid and it's full cray cray hate hate.
His Billy on the Street is manic energy where he ambushes normals in NYC. Now, a normal in NYC could be a size 16 zoomer gal, an old fuck, an old dirty hippy, or a crusty gay guy. And his guests are reliable fruit flies, like Paul Rudd or Chris Evans.
Billy would probably be the first to admit that the ghey love life ( and from the friends I've observed) is a sour pissy thing where the...ah...how you say...male gaze is the only thing rewarded. Enjoy being hungry and lonely...until you're hungry and in a room of other sullen gheys doing drugs to hook up.

"As a bit of context, I've heard a debate before whether depictions of "the gay experience" should represent the real gay experience, which can be extremely raunchy and gross, or if it should be bowdlerized to make it safe and acceptable for straights."
Larry Kramer, a giant in the LGB world for his plays, and his activism, got married to his long-time, on and off-again lover towards the end of his life. For a long time before that, however, he had a complicated relationship with the concept of gay marriage. He felt that the nature of those interactions was almost antithetical to the concept of marriage, and he didn't see the reasoning behind trying to shoehorn gay activity into a straight institution. He caught a *lot* of flak for that position.

"Adam Ruins Everything" clip where seemingly gay but not gay Adam explains that the right is uncomfortable with blacks having guns. His worldview, being in a leftist bubble, can't fathom the idea that the right is fine with law-abiding citizens of any skin hue having guns. Instead, in his bubble everything is seen through the lens of race. Which might explain why left wing prosecutors drop gun charges against black criminals and put them back on the street. You see, they are "owning" the right, since the right is supposedly uncomfortable about the skin color of the criminal rather than the fact the person is a criminal.

The first show I ever saw him on was "Brothers and Sisters". He was the gay boyfriend. His portrayal on that show was so engrained in my head that I could never buy into him being a straight lead in the Hallmark movies, so I never watch any that he's in. Plus, I just don't find him attractive, so he fails the "What if?" question for me.

I worked with a young gay gay a few years back. Probably the longest and closest work friendship I've had with a gay dude. It gave me an interesting glance into the gay mindset. He was a Bostonian who grew up in rural, blue-collar western MA, so you can understand his feeling of freedom on moving to the city.
He was very smart and there was always a thoughtfulness and vulnerability to him cloaked under a veneer of inappropriateness and "I don't give fuck" attitude. One of his favorite things to do was to yell out, "Show us your pink parts!" in serious moments, just to make people uncomfortable. He once interjected his "first time" into a conversation, going so far as to say the older man told him to "take a deep breath and relax." I was equally horrified by him and sympathetic to this young man who was clearly damaged goods.
All this is a preface to the post here about BROS. It's not a matter of laying two gay dudes over You've Got Mail and expecting it to work. I think a lot of gay-ness is broken people patching a reality together in ways that the average hetero will never see as "normal." That Eichner thinks now is the time for acceptance of the gay psyche is disturbing.

"MILO has been writing about this of late and how the gay movement basically convinces assault victims that they liked it and need more of it."
here’s a quote from gay activist / journalist Tammy Bruce from The Death of Right and Wrong:
"Almost without exception, the gay men I know (and that’s too many to count) have a story of some kind of sexual trauma or abuse in their childhood – molestation by a parent or an authority figure, or seduction as an adolescent at the hands of an adult. The gay community must face the truth and see the sexual molestation of an adolescent for the abuse it is, instead of the “coming-of-age” experience many regard it as being. Until then, the Gay Elite will continue to promote a culture of alcohol and drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, and suicide by AIDS."
And nearly all the lesbians I know were abused by their fathers or husbands. It is tragic that their “solution” just makes things worse.

It's forbidden to say this now, but the male sexual drive is (necessarily) stronger and so only considerable trauma will bend or break it. Basically, men have to be "made" gay while women will for various reasons choose to be lesbians and it is not uncommon for them to give it up.
De Blasio's wife was a militant lesbian, and the late Anne Heche was Ellen Degeneres "coming out" squeeze until she went straight again. Lots of example of this.
The fact is most gay men also have sex with women, but with the elevation of the gayness, it was necessary to produce a new binary of gay/not gay.

Yes, but was it backed up by a billion-dollar budget?
There's a ton of low-rent fantasy movies out there, and you can take them as what they are - low-budget time wasters. But for something as self-important as Rings of Power, hyped to ends of the earth, higher standards apply.

IDK about that MAGA scene. Interesting legal question. This abomination of a TV show WILL make it so a younger audience will not WANT to read Tolkien... thus damaging the brand... and book sales.
Is there cause for legal action? Its one thing for the author to 'tweek'... it's something different when the only resemblance to the story, are the names.

No, they drop their fucking eggs in the nest of other birds and their hellspawn chicks push the, ahem, native born chicks out of the nest. Some of these parents are oblivious and spend too much time feeding these parasites well into adulthood. So, calling never trumpers "cucks" is more apt. Well yeah, the money and the absurdly over-the-top hype does make it suffer a bit more. For what they put into it they should have gotten a lot more. And their insufferable "like this or you're a bigot" reaction doesn't help any either. It used to be if you put out a turd like Deathstalker 3 you took your lumps and moved on, you didn't attack everyone for noticing how bad it is.

337 The thing he's really annoyed by is that a running "debate" in the movie is whether it's too young to start sermonizing about homosexuality to children at age seven, and of course, at the end of the movie, the "debate" is resolved when some couple Billy has been arguing with takes their seven year old to the "LGBT History Museum" that Billy is (of course) some kind of doyen or director at.

351It began with the forging of the great films.

369I think the biggest problem with Dragon Slayer is that Ralph Richardson died before he finished filming all his scenes and they had to work around that.
Yeah its a tragedy. He was great in every single scene. That kid... not so much.
So-o-o-o, "Groomers!: The Rom-Com" Failed

Especially,If the proceeding movie showed you Teh Ghey Life in all it's raunchy and gross glory.
Well, fuck, who wouldn't want to expose their 7 year old son to that lifestyle?

Another problem with Rings of Power in their ransacking of what little Tolkien did write about this period, they keep forgetting what their 'new world' is like.
Take the "elves take our Jahbs" bit. In Tolkien, about 1000 years before this Numenor had saved the elves after a long period of isolation, but they had created enclaves of their own in Middle Earth and with continued contact had some friction of dealing with immortal races. This evolved into the Elf lover / Elf hating factions.
In this one, the original contact and colonies don't exist, and thus Galadriel is the very first elf anyone has seen for some 2500 years or so. How the hell does a bunch of lower class oafs have a fear of elves taking jobs? How is there an elf hating faction? It would be like having a political party against the monster in your closet at night.

There's several verses that indicate angels can take on human form in such a normal way that we wouldn't know it unless it was pointed out to us, one of the reasons why we were to be charitable to strangers, since you never know if they might be an angel to disguise.

Afaik there aren't encounters that support the notion that they have material bodies (though demons can possess human bodies with the cooperation of the person).

This is how the demons produce offspring. They can assume corporeal form (otherwise the Sodomites couldn't have tried to have their way with the two that visited) but they cannot produce offspring with humans.
For that they have to "indwell" in a human and these rituals were common in the ancient near east. Many of the "god emperors" were the result of such rituals.

Normally in these woke-vivals they have an entire work to copy and twist. Here they have fragments, that someone like Jackson would have trouble making into a movie or show. Look at how mixed his expanding of the Hobbit was received.
But if you ignore the Tolkien link entirely, and pass over the scenes and lines stolen at random from the movies, you are left with an incoherent but plodding mess of a show.

There was also a desire for immortality in the Numenoreans, which the elves had and they wanted. The Numenoreans, having elf ancestry, lived a very long time, but began to resent "the gift of men", which is death, not understanding it as a gift at all, and not having the Savior to overcome death as He had not shown up yet. So they thought if they sailed to the elf-lands in the west, which they were forbidden to go, and conquered it, they would somehow be immortal, living in the elf heaven.

Depends on your denomination. 1 Enoch is part of the Ethiopian canon, and it is referenced within the Bible. It was known to the apostles and the Church Fathers.

the thing about elf/human or angel/human fucking in fiction is, yeah, sure YOU want to do it to the manifestation of physical perfection but that doesn't mean they don't think you're just a rotting meat sack.
So, the idea that an elf would fall in love with a human is itself the big deal.

Sometimes with my pants on and this includes the always precious gay flicks, meaty, arty and profound, about that special love whose name can't be said. Billy Bob, in the Bros. trailer, in his tweets, and in his stupid "I'M A GAY MAN AND AN ARTIST, YOU MUST RESPECT ME, LOVE ME BECUASE I AM SPECIAL" hostile street "interviews" have as much charisma as finding out your gay date hasn't taken a dump in two weeks. Based on all this and the fact that I find watching a couple of guys making out in bed and then be expected to cry, while eating popcorn, as much fun as smelling the exhaust from a diesel bus, well, there isn't a chance in hell I would go see that. What I demand from the always precious gay flicks, meaty, arty and profound, about that special love whose name can't be said I see is to not pretend they are romances just like Rhett and Scarlett in Gone with the Wind. Just bring on the poppers, lube, booze, and self-loathing and I will give it 6 stars every damn time. And with that I am going to watch a few women's UFC matches just so I can calm down.

The fact the put in an exaggerated caricature Anti-Trump scene just proves that the whole "we're failing because of racists" was built in to the PR plan all along.
Their only problem is that they didn't expect people to start saying it sucked after ther first few episodes, so they had to rush out that reason the show was failing, followed by "well Tolken was a racist" defense, when they were probably trying to save it for after this episode.

Nietzsche thought like a lib. The God who made the universe doesn't need to seduce, which in human form is taking a woman to bed. He can just will a fertilized egg in her womb.
The impregnation twisted as "seduction" is the point of those four lines. And it's really not a point at all.
Yes, the Lord has asked hard tasks of the people he has chosen, but such can be explained to someone with an receptive mind. Nietzsche didn't have that.

The Western canon was finalized before the Eastern one, which was not settled until 1000 AD. The Eastern canon does include additional books, and if you want to dig into the history of how they were assembled, it's quite interesting.
Further complicating matters there are the books the Protestants removed.
The point remains: there are lots of non-canonical works that are nevertheless authentic and authoritative, albeit less authoritative than the canon.

Well there's a difference between divinely inspired and authentic. The Didache is authentic but isn't Scripture. Shephard of Hermas iirc is also of pretty clear pedigree. Just because a person in authority writes something, doesn't mean it's accurate (hence the distinction between dogmatic and non-dogmatic beliefs).
Paul was not aware he was writing Scripture at times when he was doing so, hence certain distinctions he makes.

16 Plus, like, I'm just saying, I hate going to movies at all. I've not even seen Maverick, and that has more appeal by far than even The Birdcage, which at least had Robin Williams.

Kinda weird to bring up a movie from almost 30 years ago, but Maverick had plenty of star power. Mel Gibson, Jodi Foster, James Garner...

While Biden allies have said he will seek re-election, he has shied away from declaring it unequivocally, at least in part to avoid triggering campaign finance reporting laws. His remarks to Sharpton at the tail end of a meeting with the leaders of several of the country's most prominent civil rights organizations represent a stronger assertion that he will be on the ballot again. -NBC News

They are, but they aren't as horrible as stated. Does the world really need 8 guys all screaming about how each and every She Hulk episode is the worst possible thing several times a week? With wrap-ups on the weekend, and retrospectives of the previous episode? I mean its bad, okay. But its not the end of the world worst possible ting mankind has ever created bad.

Pretty close. In the old days, even the worst Ed Wood movie was the director and author trying to make the audience happy, to make money honestly. Sure, many failed and failed badly.
Now, these shows are force fed to us by a monopoly that cares nothing for our tastes or interests and has infinite money to force it down out throats. And they blame us for its failure.

I concur, I enjoy that one.
I enjoyed a few over the last decade:
I like Wimbledon and Elizabethtown. Failure to Launch.
Palm Springs, Love Wedding Repeat.

No, which is why homosexual's had the good sense to stay in the closet, procreate and "keep it on the down low."
___
They don't procreate.

I would more argue an old school romance. He starts out a jackass unworthy of the hand of maiden fair. She rejects him at every turn when he tries to woo her. It is only when he gives up and actually becomes a better Man (helping others, doing good works) that he finds that that was the secret all along.

The point remains: there are lots of non-canonical works that are nevertheless authentic and authoritative, albeit less authoritative than the canon.

One of my favorite scholars, Michael Heiser, recommends reading the Book of Enoch, which he says that various apostles would have read, and Peter even refers to when he talks about angels in prison under the ground.
He does not demand that it is canon. And he follows some other church father in that principle.

Haven't seen/ heard Chris Gore from back in his Attack of the Show days, glad to see he takes a level headed and noir biased approach to this movie.
Also I wouldn't be shocked if Billy Eichner is the next to be accused of trying to ass rape a 12 year old, since if you're spending all that time and money to fight for 7 year olds to learn about gay sex, it's because you want them in your bed.

In a bygone era, homosexuals, because of the universal revulsion at homosexual acts and prohibition of homosexuality and sodomy, were generally forced to lead a life of heterosexuality, which meant they would marry and have children and in turn pass on their genes, now with those prohibitions gone, they no longer have to pass and consequently will no longer, generally speaking, pass on their genes, ipso facto they have now relegated themselves to be genetic dead ends.

Yes, but was it backed up by a billion-dollar budget?
Well yeah, the money and the absurdly over-the-top hype does make it suffer a bit more. For what they put into it they should have gotten a lot more. And their insufferable "like this or you're a bigot" reaction doesn't help any either. It used to be if you put out a turd like Deathstalker 3 you took your lumps and moved on, you didn't attack everyone for noticing how bad it is.

I remember in a summary of a huge blockbuster western that lost record bucks in the 70s or 80s that someone asked how could that much money be burned on something so mundane and it was explained as about half being cocaine for the cast and crew.
If that was the split here everyone would be dead. Even the distance shots everyone says look great don't look that great, but Amazon should do an audit on where the money went because it sure didn't go to the armor, props, good writers and sets. Even Galadirel spends half her time in some dowdy nightie on a boat, an off the rack blue dress, and some cosplay armor.
