Nobel Prize Season
A generation of scientists at the Solvay Conference, 1927. 17 of the 29 attendees were or became Nobel Prize winners.All but one of this year's Nobel Prizes have been awarded. Can't say that I know what Click Chemistry is. Any guesses about who will get the prize in Economics? Do you wonder what the winner predicted for Sri Lanka?
The Swedish Academy on Thursday gave the Nobel Prize in literature to French writer Annie Ernaux for "the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory. Ernaux, 82, has written more than 20 books, most of them very short, chronicling events in her life and the lives of those around her. Her work paints uncompromising portraits of sexual encounters, abortion, illness and the deaths of her parents.Plus, there's the politics!
Pre-Halloween Nobel Prize in Literature
Let's read some of what the people who gave her the prize included as the reasons for their choice: The Nobel Prize in Literature 2022, Annie ErnauxThe French writer Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 and grew up in the small town of Yvetot in Normandy, where her parents had a combined grocery store and café. Her setting was poor but ambitious, with parents who had pulled themselves up from proletarian survival to a bourgeois life, where the memories of beaten earth floors never disappeared but where politics was seldom broached. In her writing, Ernaux consistently and from different angles, examines a life marked by strong disparities regarding gender, language and class. You know, that kind of reminds me of the torment kids were put through in that honors English class in Morgan, Utah, where they had to examine The Great Gatsby through several leftist "lenses." I wouldn't be surprised if, by repeatedly examining parts of her life story in detail several times, this doesn't make her seem awfully "French" to a lot of French readers.
Her memory work dealing with her rural background appeared early as a project attempting to widen the boundaries of literature beyond fiction in the narrow sense. Despite her classic, distinctive style, she declares that she is an "ethnologist of herself" rather than a writer of fiction."Ethnologists of the self" seem to be, ummm, popping up everywhere. Well, Okay, so this particular peer-reviewed paper was auto-ethnography, not auto-ethnology. Part of the paper is read on the video. NSFW. As noted in the video, you have to go to seminars to learn how to speak about your auto-ethnographic experiences in an academically acceptable fashion. Heh. Well, back to our Nobel Prize winner, who advocates "plain writing":
The concept écriture plate is related to le nouveau roman in France from the 1950s and the striving towards what Roland Barthes called a "zero degree of writing". There is however also an important political dimension in Ernaux's language. Her writing is always shadowed by a feeling of treason against the social class from which she departs. She has said that writing is a political act, opening our eyes for social inequality. And for this purpose she uses language as "a knife", as she calls it, to tear apart the veils of imagination. Jean-Jacques Rousseau ( 1712 - 1778 ) complained bitterly in the opening of his "The Social Contract" that "Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains." The chains comprised partly the church and partly also the morals, manners, and mores derived from church culture. He believed liberty would be "perfectly reflected" through his idea of the "social contract" and the "general will." But, he added, "In order that the social compact may not be an empty formula . . . whoever refuses to obey the general will, will be compelled to do so . . ." Rousseau never explained why the chains he had in mind were less onerous than anyone else's. We call this sort of thinking "Orwellian" because it is brazenly absurd. The Jacobins during the French Revolution embraced Rousseau's ideas and that particularly bloody form of the social contract progressed steadily, courtesy of Monsieur Guillotine. So much for reason. . .

Literature Prize Citation: "Eric Martinez, Francis Mollica, and Edward Gibson, for analyzing what makes legal documents unnecessarily difficult to understand." Legal contracts of all sorts are known for their impenetrable jargon and tortured sentence structure, which might be one reason most of us rarely read the many online terms of service agreements we encounter as we navigate our online lives. Granted, there are legal theorists who insist that legal texts are difficult for the average person to understand because the law is a system of expert knowledge and by its nature deals with many technical concepts. That is, the jargon is necessary for technical precision. There are others who take issue with this idea, arguing that the law is actually built upon quite ordinary concepts like cause, consent, and best interest. So the impenetrability of legal texts is due to psycholinguistic factors. (Similar arguments might be made with regard to scientific papers.)

I remember Gatsby having quite an impact on me, reading it as a teen to see adults behaving the way they did. I thought it was a tragedy, to see lives ruined for... sex. Or whatever.

I don't think teachers ruin books for students by having them read classic books they might hate...I think they ruin those books for students by telling them they have to like them and not accepting that a lot of people can vehemently hate the book, no matter the merits.
Any Lit class worth its salt should also full discussion of the merits of the book, but then also full discussion of what one personally thinks of the book and those thoughts don't have the "right/wrong"ness of the merits...

Funny, in that I see Ivanhoe as one of the more realistic and thoughtful works about the time, one that even faces up to the way that Jews were regarded at the time. I also think it is the best of the Robin Hood stories, in that Robin Hood is just a supporting character and not a great deal of effort is put into idolizing him.

I didn't get that message in high school either. It was re-reading it as an adult, and watching the 1973 movie where it became obvious. ...and right around a third of them had sufficiently severe reactions to skip work for a day (my Dad, who's retired had a similar reaction, and after not listening to me before getting those shots, that was enough to convince him to avoid the boosters).
On top of that, that information misses people who died as a result of the shots, because the information on symptoms was obtained by phoning them a month (and two months) later.

Well, that's ONE moral of the story. Truth is though, Gatsby was a tragic figure, who made that one moral mistake (no question about that). What I would ask though is, how could he not? Given who he was and where he came from (which we don't really know), he was in a milieu with certain rules he didn't understand, and was literally seduced by a woman who did.
It would have taken extraordinary moral strength and courage for him NOT to be seduced. So what he got was the short end of all of it, and everyone else got off Scott-free. He was a flawed and tragic figure, not a monster, so he didn't deserve what he got.

Texas and Arizona are border states, but never proclaimed to be "sanctuary" states or cities. Both those states should be sending the millions upon millions of illegals to every single proclaimed "sanctuary" city or state in the nation. Just as DeSantis and others have been doing. Martha's Vineyard or NYC can't handle hundreds, yet they are all for Texas and Arizona and Florida trying to handle millions.
This is THE issue that turned me in 2016 from an anti-GOP conservative to a pro-Trump conservative voter. I will now walk over broken glass to vote for Trump, DeSantis and any other Republican who takes up this issue and throws it in the left's face as they have.

As far as many are concerned -- including me, and a lot of NFL fans -- the campaign has gone from successful to now hurting their cause. Now people are sick of the campaign (1) being commercialized and (2) rejecting certain data that goes against the abortion industry/cult. (i.e. possible link between abortion and breast cancer, and Susan B Komen Foundation being huge contributor to Planned Parenthood, thus donations to Susan B. Komen supposedly to fight breast cancer are instead going to abortion funding.)

I recall only one time that I ate brussels sprouts that I liked. It was at a restaurant and they sauteed them in some kind of light sauce. I was impressed, because I had a long history of hating them. alas, I can't remember which restaurant.

My mom has had bad teeth all her life, so much so that her molars had all rotted out by the time she was 60. She's been eating using only her front teeth for over 20 years now and they are crumbling away. The list of foods she cannot eat any more gets longer every year, because she cannot chew it.
As a result her nutrition and food intake has reduced, with very predictable results. Her insurance company and medicaid both refuse to cover fixing this even though it is blatantly a medical issue.
This year she finally got an inheritance when her sister died, my aunt Sue-Ellen
But now she can afford the work to fix her teeth, and we've gotten that started.
But seriously? Not being able to EAT is not a medical issue?

Brussel sprouts are great if made right. I used to hate them too.
Either oil them, salt an pepper and roast them: tossing them occasionally until they are partly crisp on the outside. Great as is, or add some balsamic vinegrette.
Another option is braised with chicken thighs, shallots and some other stuff. A Martha Stewart recipe.
Neither way is bitter or nasty, like brussel sprouts can be.

steam for 5-7 minutes
saute in EVOO with 3 slit cloves of garlic, 2 tbls of pancetta, 1 shallot, S&P, red papper flakes, 2 chopped apples, 1/2 cup of chopped pecans

There are historical reasons, principally that the disciplines of medicine and dentistry evolved in different ways: Dentists were simply specialists in tooth extraction, with no other knowledge needed.
It's much like the way that, in Britain, surgeons are not regarded as physicians. (There, a surgeon is addressed as "Mr." or "Ms." rather than as "Dr.".) Again, it's due to the fact that the disciplines evolved down different paths.

But it would not be a separate insurance, and a general practitioner could generally be assumed to do helpful referrals. Multi-specialty hospitals would have it as part of their menu, and doctors’ groups would include it among their specialties. I’m not sure, but I think even barbers interact more and more effectively in modern medicine than dentists do.

If assembled correctly molecules can act like ring-a-dings or legos, but legos that can be made to assemble in only one way. Slot a only fits slot b in only one configuration. Even better, it is like self assembling legos that make what you want only by shaking the box.
when you have chemical bonds instead of mechanical bonds the bond is smaller and more durable, and much easier to assemble in large quantities.
This could be as big an advance as when the English chemists figured out there was something to be done with coal tar besides make aniline die or dump the mess into the Thames

Don't molecules have specific polarity, that will attract some kinds and not others? So like you can put sugar in water, and the sugar attracts water and dissolves, but if you put it in oil, it won't dissolve because the oil molecules won't attract the sugar?

I actually think Dylan deserved it a lot more than the Communist puppeteers , comedians, propagandists and assorted mediocrities that have won it in the past few decades. If you take his body of work as a whole, his influence on Western popular art incalculable.
That said, Mario Vargas Llosa is that last "real" writer to win it, and as he is rather conservative politically, it's somewhat shocking.

That was my first level take on the situation. Shades of the Andromeda strain cooked up right here at home.
OTOH, the authors betray a bias of their own, at one point calling the Moderna shot a concoction. In cases where you're trying to prove something of unknown nature and large import, you do need to be careful in choosing your words.
Either way, a fascination read so far.
