13 My daughter is interested in a school in Maine, and I like it because it is a small town and looks safe, despite the whole Stephen King is from there thing. Not the town, Maine.

But she wants to go visit over Christmas break to see if she can survive the winter.

52 Nice! It reminds me of the shore where I grew up. He really captured the light on the water, the wet rocks, the wave crests, and how the color of the water varies . I could hear the surf, small the salt air and feel the spray.

I could never live in New England anymore due to the politics but there are areas I do miss even after almost half a century.

81 I think it's kind of boring. Yes, the waves and the movement is nice. But there's really nothing to focus on and let the mind wander. A fishing boat in the distance, or a shorebird would give a focal point.

Or a sea otter. I guess the raft is on The other side of the rock.

Don't worry too much about that. It's annoyng of course, but you still have your childhood and your memories and that can't be taken away-unless of course, you get to the point where can't remember things anymore-which I hope doesn't happen to you. And the other thing is, grandparents of young kids do remember and are speaking out to the entertainment venues and people will tune it out. Yes on all 3. Shatner began his career as a stage actor and received a standing ovation as Richard II when he was in his 20s. He wondered at one point whether he should stick with stage work and be an "Olivier-type actor," or go with more commercial work. We can all be glad that he chose the latter.

He started doing that way back when he was in The World of Suzie Wong on Broadway. He didn't care for the play, but gave it his best. Soon he noticed that the audience seemed kind of lulled by the characters' long speeches. So he started pausing where it seemed that his character might be thinking, and it caught their attention.

He did not do it much until his later time on Trek. Even then he made it seem as though Kirk was choosing his words, or sometimes searching for the right word.

Was watching a college football game last Saturday (only because my cousin plays on the team), and a linebacker made a tackle simply by grabbing a guy's jersey with one hand and bringing him down.

I was prompted to tell my wife about the era of tearaway jerseys in the NFL and NCAA back in the day, and figured I'd find some video on YT. Found one such montage of clips, and one really confused me: it was an NFL game where I recognized the announcer's voice, but it didn't seemed weirdly out-of-place because it was the great Vin Scully -- but NOT baseball.

After briefly being disoriented, I then recalled that he also announced football games (and likely other sports) at one time ...

No, he was considerably more restrained in his early movie and TV roles. I've seen a lot of them, including his fine work as Archie Goodwin in the 1959 failed pilot for Nero Wolfe. It was not until later in his Trek days that he began to slip off the leash a bit more, and directors let him do it.

His performance in Wrath of Khan is very restrained and powerful.

Yes; the Brooklyn-Bronx dialect (probably close to the way she spoke growing up) and nasal twang was something she adopted for her roles. There is a clip on YooToob of Fran in The Nanny unknowingly eating some wasabi, and her nasality goes away for about 10 seconds. It's hilarious -- very Lucille Ball-like.

365 When it comes to speaking voices, I generally refer lower ones: William Conrad, Topol, James Earl Jones, and a few others. Leonard Nimoy had a fairly deep voice, especially as he aged. That really became obvious in his one man show about Van Gogh. On the other hand, Gary Sinise does a great job of narration, even with a somewhat nasal tenor voice.

Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the LOTR movies, has a surprisingly deep voice with plenty of resonance. His narration of the LOTR book on CD is a pleasure to listen to.

John Carradine should be mentioned. But he always seemed to be "doing John Carradine." If you want to talk about somebody who often sounded stagey, never mind Bill Shatner, Carradine was it. I never bought him as Dracula.

Oh, and don't forget Charles Laughton. Hardly a matinee idol -- but when he is on screen, you watch him.

Guy does yt videos analyzing singers on the net. Carpenter could duplicate live what she did in the studio so much that people thought the tv show had prerecorded sound. Another one had Julie Andrews analyzed and she actually could demonstrate even more of her talent live than she did in the studio. Both are amazing singers.
