There are a lot of stories and videos right now about pet and livestock rescues related to the hurricane. Anybody have any inside information?

For those of us not in danger but in uncomfortable weather, perhaps we should do more for the comfort of our pets.

Meet The PetMorons

This is Sangria again. That scratching post is 3 feet tall. It looks like she thought about trying for the top of the TV. Fortunately she decided against it.

Her is a picture of my girl Summit (she appeared on the pet thread a couple years ago) working on her rehab from ACL surgery. She is now just about 6 weeks out from surgery and doing well, still has to be on a lead outside and I keep her contained to the tv room in the house. But as you can see she loves doing the water treadmill at therapy!

Hi-
On Christmas Eve my brother texted me a photo of a little kitty he had found. By New Years Eve she was at our house to begin her life with us. We named her Eve but we call her Evie. She quickly earned the nickname "Evie the Terrorist" because she was not spayed and we couldn't get her into the vet to have that done for 6 long weeks. Once that happened she calmed down quite a bit and she is now the sweetest quietest little cat. She loves sitting by our basement sliding door walkout watching the bugs outside. Thanks for the pet thread!

Photo 1: Daisy, the Belgian Malinois, runs like a rocket, and claws into our hearts. Also the lawn. But mostly our hearts. Adopted last May,
evidently dumped, about one year old then, and a fireball. Either
she's getting smarter every day, or, thanks to her, we are.
Photo 2: Cat is Merlin, Dog is Jarl ("yarl") the Malamute. They live with SonM.
Merlin arrived at our rural doorstep years ago, the skinniest, most
pitiful cat I'd ever seen. Survived, fattened up, and after some
shuffling around ended up with SonM. You can see the two critters
respect each other. Now. Jarl had to end up with a claw actually stuck
in his nose in an early encounter, but they worked it out.

10 My neighbor the feral cat whisperer informed me the little black cat, at the vet for the last week, is so sick vet recommended euthanasia. About 1pm today. Neighbor assured me he would be right there with him. Think he spent about $1,000 trying save the ketzulah.

Think I better spoil psciticene phelbotomist some more tonight.

13 Awesome pets today. I wish I had gotten a puppy too when I got my two kittens. Having cats and dogs growing up are some fond memories. Now I don't think my kittehs would accept a dog into the family. But then again I told myself I wouldn't get a dog until I moved to the country. Will be a city dweller for a few more years.

21 Great pictures. I particularly liked the sleeping kittens, Evie is beautiful and matches the blanket and that's a very striking picture of Merlin and Yarl. I think it's funny that the screen in the TV says, "Strangest things" as the cat is considering jumping on it. Summit looks like a sweet girl. Glad she is doing well and I didn't know that there was a water therapy treadmill for dogs. Daisy has lovely coloring.

Little Ruthie has gone to her new home. Her Majesty took her and Delilah up to the Buc-ee's in Ennis to meet Ruth's new owners and hand her over.

They're both veterinarians and Borzoi breeders and exhibitors. She'll have a wonderful home where she'll be happy and an important member of the family. But, damn, it's hard to see her go.

25 My stepfather's adoptive mother's cross-the-street neighbor was apparently to local feral cat feeder, but unfortunately she's getting too old, and I guess senile, to take care of them so her kids were going to get rid of all of them.

I though about going down and seeing if any would make decent pets - apparently there were a couple young litters - but my apartment is still construction-zone hazardous.

So I gave them contact information for someone I know that I thought might be interested in getting some more barn cats.

I hope they actually found good places for them...

27 I shared on an earlier thread about Pynchon the cat's excitement about son being home. (Tomorrow is FenSpouse's birthday.) Pynchon did "zoomies" from room to room and up and down the stairs, and then they played catch with the fake mouse. Then when son went to bed the cat came and slept in his usual place at the end of son's bed. It's good to see them together. Son is Pynchon's favorite human (sometimes) here, although he's nice to all of us.

Someone on the floor of son's dorm has a cat, I'm surprised the school allows that, but I feel bad for the cat in one room.

30 14. Yes, I was refilling the bowl with dry food plus giving wet food morning and evening. We have another cat, skinny muscular male, who snarfs most of the wet food. (They’re a “bonded pair.”

They’ve always eaten together but now I must feed separately, to ensure she gets more wet food and less kibble.

I told HM that I had no problem keeping all three. But Ruth's new owner has her own breeding line wiped out by heart disease: her dogs were dropping dead suddenly for no visible reason. Ruth will be shown, but we hope, more importantly, that she can serve as the foundation for a new, healthy line.

Sometimes we just watch her, in awe of how pretty she is. You see the dark patch on her right front shoulder? There's a matching patch on her other side. We call them her wings.

Ony the old cat is up on a favorite high spot right now, and Daisy was bouncing and whining as she does. Yes, Daisy, that's the cat; relax. Daisy: whine whine. Ony: hiss spit. Daisy just hasn't yet figured out that playing with a cat is a different game. Ony is a good teacher, though. Two days ago we were treated to Ony briefly chasing Daisy. I think they'll work it out.

I want to get video* of Daisy running at top speed around the farm (a time-barrier-breaking 88MPH, looks like to me). Meanwhile, here's a greyhound who makes Daisy seem slow. c/o Top 20 Tweets (I think)

My brother and sister kittehs also eat differently. He's 20lbs and she's 10lbs. I think she gives her food away to her brother. I have two bowls I fill in the morning with dry food. I used to put more in during the day if they got low. I quit doing that and now I have food left in the bowls in the morning. I also split a small can of wet food between them in the morning and sometimes in the evening. Hard to find wet food both like but I've had good luck with Canidae.

I have 2 new Shep's dogs to share and will try to do that this week. I just keep forgetting! We got Hank and Hollie the past 3 weeks. Also a picture of a miraculous transformation of one of our rescues.

Roscoe continues to eat all the furniture and rugs. Blue (the coon hound) is still my favorite big boy! Bacon had a growth removed from the side of his head but is doing ok.

47 Afternoon, all! Dagny the little Siberian was on my lap until just now, appropriate (though she had no idea and wouldn't really care) for the Pet Thread. She is doing well, plays hard, and eats enthusiastically. We probably won't be able to have supervised time for her and Stirling together this evening. Tomorrow I'll be ready with the spray bottle in case he gets too, uh, amorous.

(Funny it is that even though he was snipped 2 weeks ago, he still reacts to the girl in very male fashion. Maybe that's fading and he'll just need to learn how to play with a much smaller kitten. I hope.)

Molly, Black Dog Three still does that and she will be 2 years old in a couple of weeks. We have to crate her when we leave the house. She is quite content to stay in her house and has zero issues with going in when we leave.

Dog ACL surgery is also called TPLO, correct? I'd like to know about your process for deciding to do the surgery for Summit. (The rehab does look like fun though.)

The reason I ask is that our dog, Luna, may need it. However, she just had her annual check up at the vet and since she's moving well without pain or limping he agreed that we could postpone the surgery for a while. We are reluctant to do it because she had some more minor procedures this past spring that required a cone of shame and She Did Not Like It...at all. Not a good patient. If we do it, we will do it during the winter when she's more sedentary and stays inside more.

Thanks for any guidance or advice that you can give.

The bobbing at the very end is to try and gauge the distance of the jump by parallax shift, near things shift more than distant ones. A likely reason for the false jump is the ground shifting under it unexpectedly - ive seen my cats wipe out when rugs don't keep still when they jump.

Our little black kitty, Scout, is almost 18 and can still jump up onto tables and counters. Pretty amazing.

Last Week she was sick, would not eat. Sunday we were gonna take her to the vet, but suddenly she woke up and started eating again and being her usual pain in the butt.

58 When one of our cats gets a kill they usually eat it, but leave the "undesirable" parts on our front porch stoop.

They're givers.

The male always wants to come inside after he's done and get showered with attention. They do a pretty good job of keeping the mole and mice population somewhat under control so the attention is warranted.

61 Fenelon, he didn't do that when him and his sister, Lily first got there. He was a great dog but now he's so destructive the place looks like a war zone. It's sad really. They found out he has cancer so the poor old boy doesn't have a whole lot of time. I think pain and anxiety are a big factor.

Our dear departed lab had to have both back legs operated on, and though it slowed her down a bit, she was still her happy, loving self for another six years. (She passed at 15 a few years ago.) It was worth it to reduce her pain and increase her mobility.

As for a cone of shame - try using pool noodles threaded onto a collar one size larger than your pup's usual collar. It limits their reach without limiting their field. of vision. And destroying your living room by running into stuff.

71 Thanks for the info, Moki. As far as we can tell, Luna isn't suffering any discomfort but if she starts to show signs of it, that would certainly tip us over onto the "yes, surgery" side. She's pretty transparent when she doesn't feel well, so I think we'd know.

I read about the pool noodle approach but didn't try it because she'd had surgery to remove growths on her eyelid and I was afraid she could still get at it with her back legs. Do the pool noodles prevent that? I would love to know of a solution that avoided the cone.

Ya what they do now is TPLO. It wasn't even a question for me. Summit loves to run and fetch and swim and when she hurt herself she could not put her leg down in anyway. Not even to limp. The surgeon explained that labs in particular have a steep drop off of their tibia so once the acl is gone the femur to slides off the back of the tibia constantly. She also doesn't need a cone of shame or anything she never picked at the stitches. She is older now 11.5 so had she been walking fine I may not have made the decision to put her under, but as I mentioned that was not the case. Also my parents had a dog, Rocky, that had undergone 2 of these surgeries one on each leg one when he was a baby and one much older so we knew how much better she was going to be by having it. Hopefully Luna is feeling better and it doesn't sound like it's putting a crimp in her style! One other thing to consider is that dogs knew caps are very sharp and tend to cut through the acl over time. If she is favoring the injured leg she could be doing damage to the healthy leg. GOOD LUCK! Let us know how she's doin.

75 BruceWayne, That feedback is VERY helpful. Luna was injured either right before or after we adopted her and was limping for a while afterwards but for months now she's been moving beautifully--no problems with her gait and she enjoys her zoomies periodically with no after affects. I am pretty sure that she's not causing further damage. (That's what her vet cautioned us to look out for.)

She will swim only a few feet but that actually seems to have helped her recover from the original injury. Your story makes me think that the "wait and see" strategy is the correct one for the present.

We got the inflatable "cone" for Abner, and he managed to chew it up. At 60 bucks a pop for a giant breed, we were desperate, because he was tearing open his stitches. I saw it on youtube and gave it a shot. He still chewed it, but it was MUCH cheaper to replace!

79 Pool Noodle, great idea. We have Russian Olive trees and other sharp things and the life vest collar I got for Ole developed a leak. I stuffed it with rags. Problem was the dog could still get to back leg to chew. But cones of shame never lasted more than a day for him. He'd whack into walls and such so hard they quickly cracked.
