The primordial beginning of "Great Reset" authoritarianism was the international elite deciding, decades ago, that citizens of advanced nations have no right to control their own borders or enforce requirements for permanent residence. No one is allowed to question this "consensus" or vote against it. No matter how loudly the people of any given country demand border security, no matter how hard they vote for it, their will is consistently subverted. If that's not authoritarianism, then nothing is. The open borders "consensus" of the elite is not open for discussion. The desires of the proletariat are irrelevant. The Little People are subjected to limitless crime and expected to shoulder endless costs for mass migration without complaint, lest they be called xenophobes.Okay that's not John Harwood, it's John Hayward, Doc_0. I'm not making a joke, I just wanted you to read this as I did and have the same feeling of psychological unmooring: When I first read this, I misread John Haywood as John Harwood, and was like, "Whoa, what's going on? In this way, the husk of "democracy" is propped up as an illusion, but if only one side can organize or expect the State to respond to its votes, it's a sham.
A good deal of political correctness or "woke" totalitarianism is about preventing dissenters from organizing. The hard Left understands the power of creating permanent political organizations with huge financial resources, symbiotic with the mega-State they champion. You might have some (increasingly limited) ability to express contrary opinions on social media or among friends, but if you cannot organize to effect change by voting for representation and lobbying the administrative State, you have no power. And in the case of open borders extremism, the elite Consensus supported by well-funded and powerful lobbying groups is a direct assault on the electorate, a nakedly obvious effort to engineer the electorate, making it even harder for anyone to organize against the ruling Party. The first step was to erase good-faith disagreement with the Consensus by painting dissenters as unthinking racist brutes, and make it all but impossible for dissenters to organize. If dissenters won elections anyway, their votes were nullified by administrative fiat. How can anyone fail to see this as authoritarianism? Because it uses idealized caricatures of migrants as political props? Is it really that easy to disable all of the safeguards that protect representative democracy and national identity, which are inextricably linked? Maybe that's the first thing we were tricked into forgetting: no national identity and no borders means no nation, and no nation means no restraints on elite power, no sense of duty to their citizens interfering with the ambitions of politicians. The increase in elite political arrogance since the beginning of the open borders Consensus is palpable. Their lust for power and money grew exponentially, as did their disregard for large swathes of the electorate, who could be looted for funding but ignored as "deplorables." Is there a single politician on the Left today, in any Western country, who would agree with the proposition that they have more responsibilities to legal citizens of their own countries than to migrants or international organizations? They would all sneer at that notion. Years of this snowballing arrogance invariably affects the opposition, which is desperate for representation and organization. It's Martha's Vineyard times 100,000 every day in border states, but unlike blue-enclave elites, they're not allowed to complain or take action. There are more elite Consensuses coming our way - more issues where democracy must supposedly be suspended or subverted, where dissent is silenced and effective political organization is not allowed, where elections become puppet shows. Open borders was a successful test run. Never surrender the legitimacy of dissent. Never allow the political class to rewrite the rules of debate, political organization, fund-raising, and bureaucracy to make effective opposition to their agenda illegal. Freedom is transitory without the bedrock of nationhood. /end

This story happening in Austin, let's keep it closer to home. Austin has light rail. It took something like 7 referendums - interspersed by "expert studies" on fixing traffic congestion by groups promising to say that the only solution was light rail - before the voters gave in.
Has it fixed anything? Well...I guess some of the people who live in Cedar Park and work downtown would say that it did. And once per year, for Formula 1, I hear it's pretty good.
Not bad for an awful lot of money.

That's not exactly so. It's more a focused set of interest groups, pooling resources towards a desired outcome. Opposition is large, but totes disorganized.
My favorite example is the sugar tariffs. Eighty years old, the sugar 'lobby' is well funded and it keeps the price of sucrose at double the world market rate in the US. Thus the rise of HFCS as a cheaper replacement version. Hell, I bet Con-agra throws some dough into the sugar tariff lobbying group.

My maternal grandfather lived in a literal dirt floor shack in Canada. My paternal grandfather worked day labor jobs for most of his life. My father was an enlisted military man and my mom left her job as an Air Force officer to be a full time mom until I was a teen.
Any "advantage" I had in life was because my relatives valued hard work, reading, religion, education, family, etc. My maternal grandfather worked his way up to being a PhD and full bird Colonel. My mom and dad both earned their masters degrees. My brother has an MBA and a pilot's license and I earned my masters in computer science.

You don't have to bus literally 100% of them. If it's done in significant numbers, that will have a major deterrent effect, as illegals start catching on that we're serious; fewer will arrive, and more will start departing of their own accord.
It isn't going to solve the problem on its own, but it's a heck of a lot better than not busing any.

There are countless white people with the same story of difficult times in one way or another. Also, the Black girls in my high school class (There weren't very many of them) came from intact families and went on to go to work or go to college and succeed because their families were decent, religious people with good values.

Trump was first to the scene of the disaster, in terms of actually trying to do anything, but he could barely get much done on border barriers, and then had to counter yet *another* absurd judicial usurpation and the latest mass illegal migration gambit, fake asylum. While "his" party did nothing, and the entire mass of Dems/"press"/pop culture hysterically lied and demonized his efforts.
There weren't many deportations, and those that did happen naturally were focused on violent criminals (BTW, even *that* is stopping per ICE policy under the idiot children).

My hobby horse issue is get the IRS involved and you could eliminate illegal immigration very quickly.
Every illegal that comes here to work breaks one of two laws. They either aren't paying taxes or are engaged in ID theft. You put businesses on the hook and this gets fixed ASAP.

Taking everything in the country as it exists into account, I say there isn't the slightest chance of significant expulsions.
I'm not clear on why a blanket removal on illegal aliens. I would say that many who showed up here are far more likely to work and provide for their own than the many natives who are cradle to prison to grave welfare deadbeats.
There just aren't that many gigs that can be handled by low IQ, low educated people. That may change as the population ages, then its a matter of finding people who are willing to empty bed pans and clean crap off the floor.

Start by not allowing employer deductions on wages paid to SSN with bad matches for DOB and name, then follow up with not allowing employer deductions on wages paid to SSNs that have multiple names attached in the IRS and SSI databases.
That will get responses almost immediately. Won't solve in cash payments and independent contractors to begin with, but there are strategies in place to deal with those today.

Theres a thread on Reddit ( I know, I know) that a few of his students have reported he was cited for saying negative things about gender neutral bathrooms and he's been called "toxically masculine" whatever the eff that means. So he's hoping to get fired to sue on the grounds of discrimination. Using their own stupid laws against them.
Could be total garbage. Everything is so effed up it's hard to know.

Just reading. Paul Krugman continues his record as the most reliable contra-indicator there is. If he says something is going to go up, it does down. If he says something can't happen, it will.
The Pound has dropped to a record low against the dollar, at one time as low as $1.03. Krugman was tweeting the day before that he knows a little bit about currency crisis, and none of the conditions for that existed in the UK.
The very next day, the pound shits the bed.

I think it is actually a win/win situation in his mind, if the reports from some of his alleged students are correct.
How much fun would it be to work in an ultra-woke Lefty workplace and constantly troll the wokest? Especially, if your few based students got the joke, and the woke students are seething?
If he does manage to break the will of the woke administration and they fire him, then he should get at least a six figure payout.
