Ace of Spades Pet Thread, September 24

givn dog and cat a pill.jpg

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's enjoy the world of animals and leave the world of politics outside today.

* * *

mindful webworker sent along something special from this week:

Hi, K.T. Thanks for minding the pet thread! Nice work. The pet thread is always full of happy and sad. Here's a nice pic I thought you might
want to include - on the sad side. Also happy..

That's a good description.

I think that was c/o Top 20 Tweets.

I guess Twitter isn't always horrible.

Meet The PetMorons

betsssy.jpg

Betsy was around four or five years old when we welcomed her into our family in 2014. The people at the pound said she was a shepherd/husky mix. Normally, our pound keeps animals for two weeks, and then euthanizes them if no one claims them. But they kept Betsy past that date because she was so gentle and friendly, and they wanted to place her with a family. We were that lucky family.

Betsy rarely barked, and never whined or complained about anything. Her greatest joys were a daily walk and handouts at the dinner table. She was the best of companions and a comfort in our times of stress and worry. We were forced to say goodbye to Betsy recently, as hip problems and a sudden intestinal problem proved to be too much. If there are dogs in heaven, then Betsy surely will be there. And as Will Rogers said, "If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went."

Thank you. I have attached a photo of Betsy. Please sign my submission as R. Wilson.

How you must miss Betsy. What a great dog.

gusnbartt.jpg

Fellow morons-

Brothers Gus and Bart are Newfoundland and Australian Shepard (we call them mini Newfs--"little faces to die for"). Gus (on the right) came to us with Parvo Virus, a disease easily prevented by vaccination, highly communicable and frequently fatal. When the brothers arrived at our home, Gus didn't seem his normal gregarious self. By the next morning he was seriously Ill. He survived after a week in veterinary intensive care. We thought Bart would end up as sick as brother Gus but never showed symptoms. Gus had to be kept separate from Bart for 30 days but they then had a joyful reunion, and have been living large and raising hell together now for (almost) 8 years.

Regards,

Mr. Starr

Levon and Tallulah meet their new kitten, Maxipus Maximus. Max for short. Good thing they're not allowed on the table. Cheers Tom

They will be friends when the dogs realize that the kitten is THEIR kitten. What great pets!

blondieebear.jpg

This is Blondie Bear. She is an 80 pound, 13 year old mix of Staffordshire Terrier (aka PitBull), Yellow Labrador, Basset Hound, and maybe German Shepherd (the ears). She was my 5th rescue dog and my second foster failure. Hers was a sad story and she was nearly euthanized because she was deemed "too broken".

But we fixed her and she has been my companion, assistant, and body guard for 10 years. She's too old now to help with training the foster dogs, but she insists on going out with me just to monitor. She also handles our Facebook page, and helps out in the office.

I thought you might like to meet this sweet, gentle, loving soul.

Regards,

Dadofmanydogs

What a great story about how a "broken" dog became a working dog! And what a great face!

bonusdoggo.jpg

I have two dogs. This is not one of them. I found this puppy roaming the neighborhood. I've posted electronic notices, flyers in the neighborhood, and had her scanned to see if she was chipped. No dice so far. She's sweet and will one day be a good dog, but she's in the midst of puppy madness right now. I don't know her name. I've just been calling her Bonus Dog. I've only had her for four days, so maybe we'll find her owner. If not, I guess I got a third doggo.

bear with asymmetrical balls

We've had things like that happen. Nice-looking dog.

Attached are 2 recent pics of Dagny Sophia, my new Siberian kitten. She is too new to Chez Wolfus to have earned a nickname yet, other than "Tiny" (at almost 6 months of age she weighs only about 3 pounds!). She is a brown torbie: She has tabby stripes but also at least one tortoiseshell marking, a tan patch on one hind paw. In some lighting she looks brown; in others, dark gray. She is bright and alert, a strong eater now that's she's settled in, has learned her name, and loves to pretend she's killing toy mice and crumpled bits of copy paper. Named for Dagny Taggart of Atlas Shrugged (and our own commenter dagny) and for her mother Sophia, she is my 3rd Siberian. All have been from the same local breeder.

This weekend, after his snip, we plan to introduce her to Stirling the Black Kitten of War and Pestilence. At 6 months he's almost as big as an adult cat. It ought to be . . . interesting. (I have every reason to think they'll get along; both have been raised with other cats as well as by humans. Of course you never know.)

5 Howdy, Horde...How goes it?

I'm taking some advice from Jackson Galaxy and I'm doing a "site swap" with Allie and Kaylee. Allie is currently in the main house while Kaylee is in the sunroom.

Aside from some hissing between Allie, Jasmine, and Penny, it's been very quiet. Allie even spent the night in the main house with no incident (though she did not quite use the litterbox properly).

Tomorrow, I'll swap them back and will continue doing room swaps on weekends...

9 So we're adopting pupper #3. A quick summary:

He was returned to the group I volunteer with after he showed some aggression to one of the owners. We knew he was going to be with us a while, so we got him off Prozac, gave him some stability and let him heal. A few months later, he went to another home.

Two months after that, he gets returned for showing aggression to a neighbor. Turns out that the vet decided "Oh, he doesn't need to be on thyroid medication so we'll take him off it cold turkey."

He went to the house of a volunteer who is even better than me and my wife with problem children. He ended up thriving. But she has eight dogs in her home including him and she asked if we were still interested in him.

So we are doing a "foster with intent to adopt" which waives the adoption fee and he's back in our home where he was happy.

Posted by: NR Pax at September 24, 2022 03:30 PM (t/L3m)

10 The "bonus dog" looks a lot like two of the four "bonus dogs" that visit us for treats from our neighbor's house. At least it seems that he has given some away so there aren't 11 any more.

The most we have had come for a visit is 5. And they're big dogs. Had a barking match with ours yesterday and one of our fence posts came loose. Uncomfortable.

30 Next weekend is FenSpouse's birthday. We asked FenSon if he wanted to come home from college to celebrate the birthday and he said o.k. but I think it has more to do with seeing black cat Pynchon who has been meowing more recently. He doesn't seem to be in any medical distress so I think he's just asking where FenSon is. FenSon did not ask us how we are. He did ask after his buddy the cat.

Dagny Sophia, Leelo, and Blondie Bear.

For cats, wrap the cat in a towel so as to immobilize the claws. You'll need to cradle said wrapped cat in your lap, gently drop the pill into the mouth of cat, hold it shut for a bit.

43 (con't) -- I hope we don't have a problem. Stirling got his snip 8 days ago. However, he still thinks he is a full male, and is puttin' the moves on Dagny when we've allowed them to interact. He's Joey Tribbiani -- "How you doin'?" -- and she is going, "What the hell are you on about?"

The vet only now tells me that it takes about 2 weeks after neutering for a male cat to be unable to sire kittens (!). Is it as unlikely as we hope that he has knocked her up? She is tiny at 6 months, and has not yet displayed any indication of going into heat. So we don't *think* that she could be preggers. Yes? I hope?

Years ago, sweet little tuxedo cat Oreo needed a pill. We could get it into her mouth, and we'd close her jaws and stroke her throat. When we thought she'd gotten it down, we'd let her go . . . and she'd let the pill drop out of her mouth, p-tooey. Sometimes it took 3 tries to get her to swallow it.

46 Lucy the Fink gets her thyroid pill, 1/2 tab twice a day, every day. She hears the alarm go off, to remind me, sees me grab her pill off the counter and I pick her up, put her on the couch, pry open her mouth and drop it on the back of her tongue. Then she gets treats. Occasionally I find a half a tab on the floor. Most of the time she gets it down.

And she's a Fink.

47 We got our first cats around 1987-8, in Africa, and I think up to now we have had to say goodby to 30 odd beautiful kitties, including ones that never came back home. That works the first time. Second time is a fight when they see the towel. No easy pilling around here. I open wet cat food for my bunch twice a day, even though they hardly eat it. (If I don't open it, they raise hell.) So I'd be wasting the pill to put it in there.

Amazing. I've given liquid meds to cats -- a quick scruff, lift them so the front paws are off the ground, insert eyedropper in side of mouth and shoot, then stroke the throat to make sure she swallows. I did it with Dagny earlier this month, and with Tatiana the Wonder Siberian years ago. But pills -- oh, no.

59 As for Stirling the Evil Black Kitten, he has grown into the Evil Black Kitten of Juvenile Delinquency, and has actually settled down a bit. He has more mass (8.5 lbs. at 6 months!) to move now, though at the same time he is much stronger. He is very fond of Linda and me. He still does the nuzzling and kneading routine. But he sits near or on me more often and is less crazed.

He was worth the 8-hr. round trip to Vicksburg.

I wonder if part of the challenge is that cats have a much more refined sense of smell than humans or dogs. Dogs have a much stronger sense of smell, but cats are more discriminating.

Thus, they can easily detect the foul stench of medication in their food and may avoid eating it--that's what my cats do. I prefer liquid meds if possible.

During her last illness, we gave Oreo fluids by IV as well. She was very good and purred on Linda's lap while I administered the fluid. But she was older and pretty sick overall; she had no energy to fight us.

Aw, that was only because I was afraid she was going to be chronically sickly. Since her treatment for roundworm and the liquid antibiotic for whatever cold she had, she has been revving to redline. Exhausting -- for me.

I used to tell Stirling he was flawed because he has 1 white whisker on a pure black coat, and that he had to go back. It never fazed him; he didn't know what I was saying.

71 Depending on the pill, crush it up, and mix it with water in an eye dropper, then squirt into the cat's mouth. Years ago, Dorkie Dork needed to be put on amlodipine for high blood pressure. (When a cat starts walking in circles and can't walk straight ahead, that's a bad sign.) Because DD only needed a third of a pill (and they're small to begin with), I'd crush it and squirt it into her mouth. She hated it and would try to push me away (I cradled her upside down) but it would go in and apparently cats have a strong swallow reflex. After a few weeks of this, her vet told me her BP was perfect. :-> Who's a good dad? There are also bacon-flavored pill pockets some cats may like. (I'm not going to comment any further on liking bacon flavor....)

72 "How else to clean a cat's teeth?"
An older vet we used (since retired) would simply open the mouth of the cat, if there were ridges of plaque, he would scrape them off with his thumbnail. Then a quick brush with a pet tooth brush.
I do that with my cats after watching him do it.
A lot cheaper than putting the cat under.

We're lucky with pill administration. All of our guys learn from when they're puppies to have their mouths worked with. Having a long muzzle helps as well. Grab the upper jaw, open the mouth, shove pills into gullet, rub throat, give treat.

Also cats have a very discriminating tongue. Back in Africa my cats practically lived on pilchards. This was jut pure mashed sardines, no salt, pet food. They didn't really like any of the other wet foods. I decided I would stretch the wet food with a bit of rice (I was a naive cat owner then). So I put the pilchards and cooked rice in the food mixer and gave it a quick blend and dished it out. When I went to look there was all these small white things in the bowl, looked like ant eggs. The cats ate BUT left every half piece of rice in that mix. They were able to eat the fish AROUND the rice.

89 Meanwhile, my brother and his girlfriend just adopted a kitten. They were looking at a greyish blue cat originally but the young lady at the shelter found out that they had cats. She repeated her warning about how that cat hated other members of its species and that is why it kept getting returned.

So my brother walks over to Petsmart and this little black kitten grabbed onto him. They took him home and he is basking in his good fortune.

LOL. Had a similar experience with some wet food. They loved the gravy it came in, but not the actual morsels of meat. They just left those, but licked them completely dry. So I switched to a pate style and they eat that up.

91 Wolfus, I don't know about male cats, but our first Bouvier, post-snip, considered himself an intact male for the rest of his life. When I walked him I was forever saying, "Maximum, damn it, get that lipstick back in the tube."

All my numerous cats will lap up the gravy of those canned foods 'Something Dinner with Gravy' and leave the dinner, without fail so we also just buy the pate type foods. I fail to understand that. They all love the tuna water from Aldi's tuna in water for humans.

97 (con't) -- I hope we don't have a problem.

Yes? I hope?
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 24, 2022 04:17 PM (c6xtn)

If the kitten wasn't in heat then its unlikely. Its the whole idea to signal to male cats to come from all over when pregnancy is possible and the female won't beat them up.

Age, though, I've seen really young moms so I wouldn't bet money. Once growing up our girl had kittens before her first year birthday.

With mine, some just can't / don't get the ones right on the plate because they don't get low enough. They eat plenty of the solid meat bits as proved for sure when they have a hairball puke right after dinner.

When my 20 year cat was in her last few months she also was on fluids and she never minded it. Yes she was weak, but I also don't think there's that much pain in the skin holding the fur compared to other spots. The cool water going in made her twitch that was all.

Posted by: Oldcat at September 24, 2022 08:11 PM (eoQWY)

102 Lucy does have some impressive plaque on her teeth. I'm not about to attempt brushing. Nope. The vet has mentioned putting her under to clean them, but that seems excessive. And expensive.

How else to clean a cat's teeth?
Posted by: nurse ratched at September 24, 2022 04:37 PM (U2p+3)

I've heard / bought treats that are supposed to fight plaque. Cats didnt like them much and it didn't seem to help a lot. If its bad, you might have to get one plaque clean and then try by hand from there, but you can see how well it works for a while.

Posted by: Oldcat at September 24, 2022 08:14 PM (eoQWY)

103 We got our first cats around 1987-8, in Africa, and I think up to now we have had to say goodby to 30 odd beautiful kitties, including ones that never came back home. It's really hard especially as I've gotten older and more emotional. The worst is having one pass away at the vet as I want them home on a lap, loved to the last second.
