The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The transition to remote work has been immensely challenging for businesses and their employees. However, our findings revealed that most executives didn’t fully grasp just how much this shift would affect their workforce,” Doug Camplejohn, founder and CEO of Airspeed

Quote II

“If the Democrats vote against this resolution, then they are continuing in their coordinated effort to shield a potentially compromised President from necessary congressional oversight,” Rep. James Comer (R-KY)

Quote III

“At the time, I was young, I was naive, and, I mean, quite frankly, I feel exploited. I wasn’t in the scene like I am now. So I was definitely very easily manipulated.” Instagram model Sumner Stroh

Not only is he a bad person his music sucks as well.

Quote IV

“After my personal research, I made a decision for the well-being of my team. I regret that my university, my athletics director Ray Tanner and others got drawn into the criticism of a choice that I made.” South Carolina Women’s Basketball head coach Dawn Staley

I wonder if there is a contract between the two schools. What a woke and spineless leader.

Quote V

“The fact our love was forbidden made it even more intoxicating. When we finally had our first snatched kiss two months later in the music room, it was incredible.”Toby Dorr

Quote VI

“Today’s filing is neither focused on the facts nor the law — rather, it is solely focused on advancing the Attorney General’s political agenda. It is abundantly clear that the Attorney General’s Office has exceeded its statutory authority by prying into transactions where absolutely no wrongdoing has taken place. We are confident that our judicial system will not stand for this unchecked abuse of authority, and we look forward to defending our client against each and every one of the Attorney General’s meritless claims,” Alina Habba, an attorney for President Trump.

Seems like a fun group filled with love and diversity.

Student groups at Berkeley adopt a 'no Zionist speakers rule'

Last month, at least eight different student organizations at UC Berkeley’s School of Law incorporated a bylaw into their respective constitutions attacking the state of Israel.

'[I]n the interest of protecting the safety and welfare of Palestinian students on campus [we] will not invite speakers that have expressed...support of Zionism,' the bylaw read.

These students are vile, evil little worms.

When a government statement of "We strongly condemn the violence perpetrated...." it's a long way to say, "We've lost control."

Leicester, England has descended into complete chaos as ongoing ethnoreligious clashes between Hindus and Muslims continue to flare, coming as the direct result of England’s open border policies and far-left policing practices that have allowed the situation to completely spiral out of control.

Ethnoreligious clashes have been playing out in England now for weeks, spawning in the City of Leicester, where, thanks to open-borders policies, Brits make up just 45% of the population. In Leicester, mobs of fighting-age Muslim migrants, largely of Pakistani origin, have carried out organized assaults on the city’s Hindu faith Indian community, the men of which have risen up to respond to Islamic threats.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, including the UN. 'Better than Bulgaria but not as nice as Cuba: how did the US become such an awful place to live?'

What do you call a country where nearly one in 10 adults have medical debts and a broken bone can boot you into bankruptcy? A country where a city of more than 160,000 residents recently had no safe drinking water for weeks? A country where life expectancy has dropped for the second year in a row and poor people sell their blood plasma in order to make ends meet? A country where the maternal mortality rate of black women in the capital is nearly twice as high as for women in Syria?

You call it one of the richest countries in the world

Well of course he has. Ohio Debate Commission Director Has Donated To Democrats, Including Tim Ryan, Records Show

The leader of a “nonpartisan” group that schedules political debates in Ohio, including for the U.S. Senate race, has donated to Democratic candidates like Rep. Tim Ryan, according to federal records.

Jill Miller Zimon is executive director of the Ohio Debate Commission, a 501(c)(3) charity composed of “civic and media organizations” that hosts debates in the Buckeye State. But Zimon, a former Democratic U.S. House candidate in 2016 and 2014, contributed over $13,000 to Democratic causes and candidates between 2006 and 2018, records show

If you subscribe to Charter Spectrum expect to see your rates rise.

Judge rules Charter must pay $1.1 billion after murder of cable customer
Judge lowers $7B award but agrees Charter is liable.
Charter Communications must pay over $1.1 billion to the estate and family of an 83-year-old woman murdered in her home by a Spectrum cable technician, a Dallas County Court judge ruled yesterday.

A jury in the same court previously ordered Charter to pay $7 billion in punitive damages and $337.5 million in compensatory damages. Judge Juan Renteria lowered the award in a ruling issued yesterday.

The damages are split among the estate and four adult children of murder victim Betty Thomas. Renteria did not change the compensatory damages but lowered the punitive damages awarded to the family to $750 million. Pre-judgment interest on the damages pushes Charter's total liability to over $1.1 billion.

It isn't surprising that the judge lowered the payout, in which the jury decided punitive damages should be over 20 times higher than what Charter is liable for in compensatory damages. A nine-to-one ratio is often used as a maximum because of a 2003 US Supreme Court ruling that said: "In practice, few awards exceeding a single-digit ratio between punitive and compensatory damages, to a significant degree, will satisfy due process."

How much Charter actually will pay and what it's insurance carrier pays are two different things.

Stop Cooking Chicken in Nyquil, FDA Begs in Response to Social Media Trend
Hard to believe this has to be said out loud, but...

The US Food and Drug Administration is taking a bizarre trend seriously. It may seem like cooking up raw chicken in cough syrup is the stuff of nightmares, but videos purporting to do just that have appeared on platforms including TikTok and Instagram. Last week, the FDA issued a warning over the misuse of medicines as inspired by social media videos. TikTok condemned the Nyquil videos.

I'll be honest. Growing up I attended schools that concentrated on reading, writing and arithmetic. Throw in some civics, western civilization, religion and foreign languages. Interesting piece: 'Six Subjects That Should Be Required In School But Aren’t - Basic education should be both more practical and more intellectual.'

The older I get, the more frustrated I am by my own ignorance. When I was younger, my ignorance wasn’t much of a problem, because I was ignorant of how ignorant I was. Now I’m smart enough to realize how stupid I am, and I am constantly trying to fill the very serious gaps in my understanding of the world.

I don’t, for instance, know what any of the different trees are called. I don’t know how the city sewer system works. I don’t know how to build a birdhouse, or knit a cardigan, or take apart a clock and put it back together. Don’t ask me to diagnose car trouble, bake a croissant, or draw a realistic sketch of an architectural landmark. I wish I could do all of these things, and someday I’ll learn. But for now, while I can read and write pretty well, and I remember some algebra and history, I am useless across a staggering number of domains.

I only partly blame myself for this. I also blame the school system, which devalues practical knowledge. From first through 12th grade, I do not remember being offered a single class that would teach me to cook things, grow things, design things, or even how to learn how to do these things. There were no lessons in crucial subjects from how to open a drawer that is stuck to how to keep your life from becoming a wreck. School equipped me with a great deal of knowledge that I never needed and almost immediately forgot (e.g., trigonometry), and left me totally unprepared to deal with many of the most basic challenges of adulthood. I am grateful that I was taught how to read and introduced to certain great works of literature (although English class managed to make reading Shakespeare miserable, and the stuff I really enjoyed back then—like Kurt Vonnegut—I had to find on my own).

When it comes to skills around the house or garage, fathers and mothers play a large roll or no roll whatsoever. It isn't up to the school system to be educators and parents. Although they are sadly becoming the "parents" to many children.

The Gestapo State is getting out of hand. Will Mike Lindell get justice? We will see.

Five days after issuing a threat to do so on convicted former White House strategist Steve Bannon’s podcast, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell made good on a promise to sue the U.S. Government and Attorney General Merrick Garland over the seizure of his company-issued cell phone.

REVERSING THE FLOW —
How electric cars could rescue the US power grid
By 2035, batteries in California BEVs could power every home in the state for 3 days.

Last month, California finalized a rule that will ban the sale of new gas-powered cars, starting in 2035. Obviously, that’ll accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and encourage other states to do the same. (Oregon has already followed California’s lead.) But less obviously, spurning carbon-spewing vehicles could help buttress the United States’ ancient, creaky electrical grids.

Cars are no longer just modes of transportation; they are increasingly integrated into the larger energy infrastructure. If your EV is sitting in your garage fully charged (cars are typically parked 95 percent of the time) and you lose power, that big battery offers an opportunity to keep the lights on. And when there’s a sudden spike in demand for the grid—because everyone wants to turn on their AC during a heat wave or their heat during a deep freeze—utilities could pay homeowners for their excess battery power.

Ah unicorns and rainbows for everyone. Peace, love and understanding throughout the land.

I ran across this after I found the previous comedy sketch about EVs.

Talk about an oxymoron, “Everyone knows he is an honest, hardworking legislator,”

A prominent Chicago Democrat lawmaker has been hit with federal bribery charges, prosecutors have revealed.

Illinois state Sen. Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) has been charged with bribery as part of a yearslong investigation into the red-light camera company SafeSpeed LLC.

He was also charged with lying to the FBI.

Jones, a South Side Democrat who serves as a deputy majority leader, is the son of former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr.

"They" only like minorities when it suits "their" purposes. Nothing new there. But it's nice to see Nikki Haley swinging back.

The View’s Latina diversity hire launched a racist attack on former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday during a discussion about possible 2024 Presidential contenders.

During the segment, the newly-domesticated “controlled opposition” conservative for the show, Alyssa Farah Griffin, mentioned Nikki Haley as a possible candidate for the GOP citing her record as an “incredibly effective governor in South Carolina.”

Hostin — the slightly darker, slightly dumber, slightly younger version of Joy Behar — then chimed in and asked, “What is her real name again?”

I'm not a big fan of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). That said, he apparently has a backbone and I respect him for that. It appears he has chosen a hill to fight for and die on along with the Republican party this November.

“This is not a states’ rights issue. This is a human right issue,” Graham said. “So, no matter what California or Maryland will do … I am going to advocate a national minimum standard.”

But the South Carolina Republican’s effort comes at a perilous time for the Senate GOP, which is attempting to retake control of the chamber after two years in the minority and is dealing with a barrage of ads on the issue from Democrats, who see it as a political winner.

According to an analysis by The Associated Press, Democrats have spent roughly $124 million on ads centered on abortion — more than twice what the party has invested in any other issue.

Problems at a Waffle House before bars closed? Yup. Genius Award Co-Winner.

A police chase through Dawson and Hall counties earlier this week started with an assault at a Waffle House and ended with a crash at a church.

Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson says that Zackery Miller, 22, hit a man in the head with a machete in the parking lot of a Waffle House on Center Lane in Dawsonville at 10 p.m. on Monday night. The man who was assaulted was not injured.

Motorcyclist Jailed For Trying To Impress First Date With High-Speed Police Chase

The motorcyclist who led cops on a high-speed chase because he was “trying to show off” for a female passenger with whom he was on a first date has pleaded guilty to a felony charge and will serve two months in jail, Florida court records show.

Taylor Beverly, a 23-year-old Tampa resident, copped Thursday to a fleeing or eluding charge in connection with the chase last year. In addition to the time behind bars, a judge suspended Beverly’s driver’s license for a year and ordered him to pay about $700 in fines and court costs.

After Beverly (seen at right) blew a red light in front of a squad car, police began chasing his 2017 Suzuki, which weaved in and out of traffic while running additional lights and traveling at “well over 100 mph,” according to an arrest affidavit.

He knew the pain of Communism, and the allure of America. It drove his lyrics.

80 REVERSING THE FLOW —
How electric cars could rescue the US power grid
By 2035, batteries in California BEVs could power every home in the state for 3 days.

The enviros have been talking about that for years.

After all, installing batteries to back up renewable resources is enormously expensive, so what could be better than the prospect of FREE BATTERIES to back up the power system?

The idea is that you charge the EVs during the day with solar power, and then discharge them when you need the battery backup.

Part of the problem with this wonderful idea is that when a renewable electrical system needs battery backup most is when the sun is setting, and a lot of EVs may not be available for backup then.

One would have to believe that NY bankers wouldn't do their own valuations on properties before loaning money out but would instead accept at face value the valuation of the organization asking for the loan, which should be laughed out of court.

But there are a lot of Trump haters out there and they will accept anything that has the chance to stick it to Trump.

133 Listened to Vlad last night, really didn't think there was that much to it. Only substantive element was the partial mobilization.

Interesting parts were, for me - specific claim that a deal with the Ukes was done in Istanbul before being undermined; the even more embellished accusations about long-standing nefarious western actions against Russia (supporting terrorist bands in the Caucasus? WTF was that about?); and of course the theatrical bit about "using all means at our disposal" to protect Russia's security and independence.

In free translation the phrase actually is identical to the warning contained in the George H.W. Bush letter to Saddam, that Tariq Aziz "refused to accept" (after reading) at Geneva in January '91. Long a recognized euphemistic reference to nukes - "all means at our disposal". Of course Iraq proceeded to cross all three red lines set out in the letter in the next few months. It's almost like Saddam was an incredibly dangerous and reckless nutcase seemingly impervious to even the most dire warnings. Or something.

I'm a pretty big Leonard Cohen fan, and it's funny that I can't really tolerate anyone else's Hallelujah because it's a bitter, spiteful song by a damaged man and most people want to sing it as a Christmas carol. No joke. I heard it played on a Christmas channel a couple of years ago. The one cover I can't get enough of is Nick Cave's "Tower of Song."

https://youtu.be/duv1MxvXYck

But Nick Cave, like Cohen, is very much a "you either like him a lot or you sort of hate him."

139 I remember when Berkeley would support radical thinking but also some world class education.

An article I read once referred to "Berkeley One" and "Berkeley Two", where Berkeley One referred to the part of the school that cranked out Nobel Prize winners and STEM Ph.D.s, and "Berkeley Two" was the "studies" majors and diversity bureaucrats. For decades, the agreement was that "Berkeley One" would be left alone, so long as it didn't object to the growth of "Berkeley Two".

That is no longer true - try simply hiring the best candidates on the market if you are the physics department without racial quotas now. And all of your hires have to sign loyalty oaths pledging their loyalty to DEI.

Does this pussy want to complain that high school didn't teach him how to clean a toilet or charm a girlfriend?

271 "I'm not a big fan of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). That said, he apparently has a backbone and I respect him for that. It appears he has chosen a hill to fight for and die on along with the Republican party this November."

Graham is nothing more than McConnell's hatchet man with this one. McConnell wants to tank the supposed red wave, and if he can't do it by starving campaigns of cash, he'll use Graham to energize the Dem base to do it.

Besides, if SCOTUS expended considerable effort gutting RvW to let each individual state go its own way, it can't be constitutional to let Graham force states to do what Congress says. Graham and McConnell know full well that a national law is going nowhere. They're simply doing this to give their base the shaft.

It also, of course, creates the infrastructure necessary to shut down travel at any time and by any individual, group, or location. Once the system is in place it’s there to be used for any excuse, Imagine if it had been in place in 2020!

309 A 10 year old is too young to understand Cohen's Hallelujah. By and large. Unless they were abused for years. It is a Lamentation -- not an anti-God song. It takes a hard life and a lot of introspection to get this. Only a shallow reading and a life free of pain and grief leads to that view. IMHO. It is as close to being Inspired as anything outside Scripture. Or inside the book of Job.

Saint Trayvon of FL was on a robotrip mission when he decided to try and kill the wrong neighborhood watch guy. And caught a bullet in his chest for his efforts to beat Zimmerman's brains out on a concrete sidewalk.

Robotripping is still legal in most states, though a couple require an ID to sell the DM version. It takes a lot to achieve a 'high' effect. It's a very weak sister of morphine; FDA approved for OTC.

336 It's also good but unsettling to know that the government and power grid operator will certainly not let the EV owner disconnect from the power-sucking system whenever he or she pleases. If EV power-sucking is the law, EV owners and operators will be fined if they do not plug into the grid when at home and work. The government will decide how much, if any, battery charge to leave you with, based on your driving habits.

And every charge-discharge cycle reduces total battery life and increases risk of fire and not having sufficient range on the battery if your immediate need doesn't meet the government's profile of your pattern of life. And your risk of going to jail increases by merely owning one and failing to have the government devalue your battery at their pleasure.

Sounds like a great motivation to me to jump out and plop down $60k-150k on the government's battery.

Honest academics ripped Liz's "study" to shreds, but it served her political purpose.

349 but it's not a bitter spiteful song at all - it's a song by a man who's heartbroken, and lost, and has suffered, and he can't see his way through it. And yet he still remembers that a Christian is told to praise God in all things, even the terrible ones. It's one of the hardest concepts in Christianity to face up to or live up to - and yet it's there. That's what the song is about, a man striving to hang onto his faith even though he's been stabbed through the heart.

Really? Because I listen to the lyrics, and all I hear is 'I don't know if God even exists, but sex is pretty great even when it's wrong.'

The last verse maybe isn't bitter and spiteful. And if it is, then really, what's it to you? But yeah, that's sort of my point. His world was toppled by his earthly desires. It all went wrong and he came to terms with it.

It's far from a song of joy or some absurd Christmas carol, though.

353 Well, my big chore for the day was running a dedicated air line from the compressor in my small shop over to the big shop. I had a nice long piece of truck air brake hose with fittings, and that, combined with two shorter hydraulic hoses, gave me enough reach. Had to drill holes in two walls, and never hit any wires!

The hoses are all vastly tougher than they need to be for 125 PSI shop air. Eventually, i would like to redo with black iron pipe, but this will last for a few years, even in the Sun.

Electric power grids have no storage (immediate, more on that later). Supply must always equal demand. What is being generated must be consumed, and what it demanded to be consumed must be generated.

Wind and solar can't maintain that. Note the Bad Cat's first graph. That's the solar power output of a solar panel on a crystal clear day. But note what happens when you have a partially cloudy day. Not a smooth curve anymore, but random jumping up and down at significant fractions of total capacity. Very bad for that stability and demand = supply thing.

Same thing with windmills. Not enough wind, and they don't turn. Nothing. Windspeed increases and you start generating up to full capacity. Windspeed goes above that, and you've to start feathering to keep from overspeed. UP to a point, then you have to shut down, because it's just too much.

Too little wind, no power. Too much wind, no power.

So you want wind and solar. Too volatile. To smooth that out, guess what. You need 100% standby capacity, in rapid spin up and spin down.

Basically you need fossil fuel (nat. gas) plants cable of supplying the full demand sitting there ready to spin up and take the load at a moment's notice. So you need to double your generation capacity.

So, forget the wind and solar and go with reliable, non-volatile generation....

Posted by: CppThis at September 21, 2022 11:39 PM (UewuT)

IIRC, Canada has a nuke waste disposal site in northern Manitoba. They dug a mine some 3000 feet deep into ancient rock of the Canadian Shield, close to a billion years old. That rock is stable. It's dry, tight, and far below the active water table. The shaft branches off into numerous lateral tunnels, and as each one is filled with waste, it is concreted off. When all the possible laterals are built and filled, i expect they will backfill the shaft, and dig another one a few miles away.

As El Gato pointed out, the US produces about 2000 tons of nuclear waste per year. That would fit into just 2 40' standard shipping containers. If you packed it, but you don't want to, cause it would go critical.

That's how energy dense nuclear fuel is.

Find one of those mid Pacific super remote super volcanoes. Drop at least one spent nuclear rod down it's gaping maw, and take countless readings from ships, planes, satellites. Might not even measure more than statistical "noise", given the earth's natural radiation?

Diluting a few spent rods into a few billion tons of boiling magma, well.. pretty much like pissing into the ocean grade levels of "dilution."

Oh, and it would piss off all the right greenies.

That's way better than talking about going critical.

Do you ever hear the green energy people talking about what they are going to do with millions of used solar panels and batteries? No, because they are way better at PR than pro nuclear people are.

Most of our population was brought up on the idea that nuclear is going to burn a hole to China right before it ends life on earth. Doesn't matter how pissed off that makes you it's just a fact. That's why we are closing nuke plants and spending trillions on solar and wind all around the world.

If pure logic and fact ruled we would have nuclear powering the world. Is that happening?

454 Vitrification works quite well with nuclear waste. Melt some borosilicate glass, pour waste in, mix about and let it solidify. Next crush the glass so that it is in smaller pieces that won't be as susceptible to thermal stresses (ie, less likely to have cracks develop), and then leach out the nuclear waste that is within a few microns of the surface. The rest will be held in the glass.

Put that into containers and place it underground, well below the waterline and with plenty of impermeable layers of clay and shale above it. Problem solved.

Not only this but the waste that used solar panels will generate will threaten our water supply if it is dumped in the US. All those heavy metals leach out rapidly, on the order of weeks, IIRC the timetable.

Naturally, the vast majority of environmentalists ignore this aspect with very few protesting/complaining about how it is transported over to sub-Saharan Africa where it is today dumped instead. An actual case of environmental racism.

Yes, and thank you for that question. We have an extremely safe place for nuclear waste, Yucca Mountain in Nevada. We've been studying and developing this site for nuclear waste storage since the 1980s and can prove it is safe for nuclear storage. And furthermore we've developed a procedure that makes the waste extremely safe, even safer than we thought in the 1980s, and we'd be happy to explain this all in layman's term.

Esperanto is based on Slavic and Romance roots, simplified like a severely regularized English, simplified verb tense, without the case endings and an English like reliance on prepositions and pronouns.

Slow, but nice. Cabs are all in, stove is in, microwave is in. Doing the floor as we speak. Its about 70% done, just need to do the 2 hallways and all the floor trim. Probably could do all the bling starting next week, like the cabinet crown moldings, etc. Waiting for the granite top still. If everything goes right I'll be done in a few weeks. It was an epic job. Nothing I'm not used to, but damn, kitchens are way more elaborate than they were years ago. They didn't have cabinet crown moldings along the top, or light valance moldings along the bottom, or box columns on each side of the window with an arch in between and an upper section of crown around that, etc etc. I can't believe my brother still does this shit. This confirms my suspicions about why the did what they did. US govt, covertly, funds the creation of a virus, for "vaccine and research purposes". Because of that pesky GoF ban, they farm it out to the Chicoms in Wuhan.

Chicoms fuck up and leak it out. It causes a damned pandemic that throw the world in panic mode. Oh Shit moment for these Deep Staters.

They threw out everything they knew about respiratory viruses and pandemics, 100 years or better of knowledge (masks don't work, lockdowns and quarantines are counter-productive, because if there's any time you need well-functioning supply chains and economic output, it's during a pandemic medical crisis).

And then they launched on the most reckless, damned fool "Warp Speed" creation of a so-called "vaccine" that is probably the most deadly every put out. Not to mention it didn't work.

Whoops, I done learnt I done erred. Right Ascension, RA, is always expressed in hours. Time Zone style. RA at the fall equinox is thus 12 hrs, exactly. Declination is always measured in degrees.

To measure that position on the celestial sphere in degrees, one speaks of celestial longitude, not right ascension. Same thing, but one is in hours, minutes, and seconds, the other is in degrees (fractional or minutes and seconds optional).

This goes back a long way. Astronomical tradition and all that.

Kamala Harris, now holed up in her Official Residence at the US Naval Observatory, knows all about these astronomical vagaries, I'm sure, and could school us all.

Read up on the official residence there as the USNO. They built it originally for the superintendent of the observatory. But then later, the Chief of Naval Operations appropriated it for his own pad, and that lasted until the '70s or sometime around there, when the Vice President appropriated it for his official pad.

The USNO defines astronomical time for these here United States. There are all sorts of collaborations internationally for the international standards of astronomical time, but by the law, the time is defined solely by the USNO in these here United States.

Now, atomic time is defined by the NIST and some atomic clock farm in Boulder, CO.

Again, it's complicated. But the USNO defines what time is per the Sun and stars.
