The title isn't exactly inspired, but the work itself is sensational. I love this. It's going on the list to buy a print. I am sure I have a place I can put it.

24 This is typical of a whole school of European landscape art and, being not very creative myself, I find I like pretty much every single one.

But where would I hang it? Probably wouldn't, only because it doesn't provide much of a spark. These sorts of paintings hung in big old European house precisely because they take up wall space and no one is offended. Or so I imagine.

"Restful" is a good word for it. So are "placid" or "quiescent" or "calm." This might be an answer to where I would hang a print of it. The bedroom might make sense. I will give it some thought.

Yup. You also see that the traveler is looking straight at the viewer. It's really neat. The figure is so small it makes it look like another landscape with people, that the viewer is just an outside observer--just looking at another nice painting. Up close tho I see the figure notices me and I'm suddenly in the painting too.

68 THIS is an example of why I enjoy low country art from the time period. Brilliant portrayal of skies and light, rich earthy colors and a romantic level of detail that makes the scene come alive. They are a delight to study and just enjoy for the bucolic peace.

The still life paintings of that place and time are among my favorites for similar reasons: rich colors, romantic realism and incredible detail. They need no other reason to exist than to please the viewer.

think I paid like 5-6K DM

like to never sold them but finally did

119 By the end of the month, Biden's FBI will issue a very serious report of very serious and dangerous threats by white supremacists who plan to disrupt the election.

Within 12 hours, Biden will appear, give a speech that makes the Dark Thursday speech look tame, yelling, fist-clenching that he is "protecting our democracy" from this "crisis" and ordering the military to secure voting sites. That is, keep Republican poll watchers out.

The timing may shift only to account for conservatives and the courts to not have time to block his illegal orders.

Sarah: $93,600 per annum, in a standard 2,080-hour work year. Assuming 12 hours per day, with the surplus 20 hours per week at time and a half, it annualizes to $163,800.

Getting ready for the visit by the councilman and media to look over my deplorable (ha!) apartment conditions. They say they'll be here about 11:30. I hope it won't take too long -- but I do want to discuss some stuff with the legal aid person.

True, the water has stopped seeping out from the walls onto the kitchen floor, or mostly. I'm leaving the sodden towels in place and will move them out and back a little before the crew gets here, to make the floor look damp. Hey, if the Dems can set up a photo op, so can I.

Joe Mannix's advice and others' in the Morning News thread were excellent. The problem is, it's a big country. There are lots of places I might want to live. Visiting more than a couple to examine before buying could be a strain. My plan was to stay here (pretty cheap) until I retired, and then move away from this Congo river basin for good. Now I may have to shell out more for rent in the short term. (No, there is nothing I want or can afford to buy here.)

Posted by: Oddbob at September 21, 2022 09:49 AM (nfrXX)

Dutch landscapes, especially those of Ruisdael's Holland School, were inspired by real scenes but the artists painted them indoors in their studios. There they were able to manipulate the setting for the most desired final product. Thier colors were subdued and almost monotonal. They might also have a religious message to them, too.

The Hudson River School painted outdoors, in natural light and color. They were trying to capture nature as it was--unpredictable, awesome, powerful, and sublime--not idealized. The colors and lighting are more realistic.

Both styles, however, are designed to invoke a deep, powerful emotional response from the viewer. A move away from the lofty, stoic and strict classicism of their immediate proceeding styles (the Renaissance & NeoClassicism, respectively.)

The commercial showed an old Hispanic woman being taken care of by a black Roman doctor. And they looked very concerned. Why? Because a 42 year old white guy in a suit (the PBM) sitting in an office was about to fuck them up somehow.

Message is clear. White men are the enemy.

They are the gatekeepers for health insurance regarding what drugs are covered under the plan and their costs. Based on a skim of an article at Forbes, I don't think it was that bad. It looks like the 3rd Corps might have been made up of a mix of newly formed local volunteer battalions (a new initiative that appears to be trying to crash form an effective reserve; Russia entered the war without one), and training and garrison cadres. If accurate, the latter is particularly catastrophic for them, as it means that the Russians might have lost a lot of their training capability.

Well, he backstabbed his entire constituency, along with 1/2 of the rest of the country. I only hope the derision he so earned is remembered accordingly in '24 when he comes up for reelection.

Mumbledy years ago, a friend and I hatched a plan to take a stack of I heart some credit union stickers and make up a bunch of I heart crime stickers to paste on cop cars.

Late one night, at the local cop hang out (some sub shop), I sneaked in and planted one on the parked cop car. I imagine that guy got quite the ribbing from his buddies.

385 I think even Putin realizes that a draft today would end up for him the same way that conscription in 1916 ended up for the Tsar.

Russians already have conscription but there are (or least were) legal barriers to require conscripts to serve outside of Russia unless they volunteered to do so.

Dunno how this most recent order affects that but it seems to be aimed to at prior service rather than raw recruits.

404 @356 Honestly, I'm surprised Putin hasn't called up a draft yet. Conditions for Russian soldiers in peacetime are completely deplorable. I'm surprised *anyone* signs up at all, let alone for a war.

----

From what I've been hearing, the Russian constitution prevents him from calling up a draft unless Russia itself is invaded. Also, he's been working hard to keep the word out that it is *not* a war. It's a "Special Military Operation". There's already some discontent over the fighting. Suspicion is that it would get worse if the government officially admitted that the events in Ukraine are more than a big peacekeeping operation.
