You sure about that?

Posted by: Herpes at September 22, 2022 09:42 AM (Zz0t1)

57 If you look closely, coming off the top of Moses' head looks to be two light white smudges. In the Bible, Moses is said to have a radiant face because of his encounters with God's glory. The light rays coming from his face were misinterpreted when the Bible was translated, and they became horns. This is why Michelangelo's "Moses" has two knobs coming from his head. I'm not sure when that error was corrected. Dolci was Italian Baroque. He looks like he's trying to create beams of light here but they're so light. It's a neat detail.

That's near the end of Moses life, he asks to see the glory of God. God does allow him to, but says he cannot see his face, only his back. So He puts Moses in the cleft in a mountain and God covers the cleft with His hand as he walks by.

It's pretty interstate though because they spoke for days face to face when Moses is getting the tablets. Moses face is glowing so much from the encounter that he has to veil it because it freaks the Israelites out.

So seems like he was seeing some of Gods radiance then just not the full measure of it?

Per the earlier parts of the passage it looks like God appeared in cloud form then. Theologically I believe the beatific vision (prior to death) would disrupt the choosing process of for or against God.

As SMH says, that look "is seriously, me?"

Important point - Moses said he couldn't be a leader because he had a stutter.

Posted by: blaster at September 22, 2022 09:53 AM (9VeU0)

83 Absent the title he wouldn't really be identifiable as Moses.

A lot of the artists have a huge bias towards thinking that ancients looked just like our contemporaries.

Adam and Eve are always depicted as white, when in fact they carried all of the genes that comprise every skin, eye, hair color, body shape, etc. I submit that they in reality were much darker in color.

Painting of Jeremiah, Moses, Samuel and others depict old balding men. Again, I think balding is a genetic defect that was picked up and propagated much later. Witness 2 Kings 2 where Elijah cursed the young men for ridiculing his baldness (it wasn't their primary issue) which, if common among elder men, wouldn't have been something to ridicule.

I'm going to go with a darker skinned Moses with a full head of hair - this one is just some guy from the coffee shop who is looking up to disguise his double chin.

My central problem with it is that Cameron absolutely stacked the morality so far in favor of the innocent and pure natives and against the evil colonizing humans that the story itself is just cartoonish nonsense.

It's the reverse of what people think of 1950s Westerns to be where the Indians are supposed to be blankly evil and the cowboys moral paragons (people really don't watch all that many Westerns from the 1950s, to be honest). It's an effort to "correct historical wrongs". It's also cloying and feels incredibly false through and through.

I have other issues, but that's the core of it. The spectacle is awesome, though.

"We declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing.

With some, the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor. . .

. . . while with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other's men labor."

Believe it or not, Lincoln was a contemporary of Marx, who had published his economic and political essays in the New York Daily Tribune beginning in 1852.

Northern states were limiting and outlawing slavery since the Revolution. Any argument trying to position this as some type of parochial or targeted move fails to take into account the state of slavery in the North and the very specific reasons why Lincoln structured the proclamation this way. In fact, he would even release the proclamation until he felt relatively assured the North would win. That was a very wise and measured move.

309 This entire article at politico is a hot mess, but this... Senators were not meant to represent the people, you idiot "constitutional scholar":

This is hardly a new problem, but it is one that threatens to reach a breaking point. The political scientist Norman Ornstein has popularized an arresting statistic, one that is validated by demographic experts. By 2040, 70 percent of Americans will live in just 15 states. That means 30 percent of the population — coming from places that are less diverse and more conservative — will choose 70 senators. Already each senator from Wyoming, the least populous state, exercises his power on behalf of less than 600,000 people, while each senator from California, the most populous, represents nearly 40 million. This distortion of democracy, already hard to defend, could become the defining feature of national life.

323 And who is responsible for this? Your progressive father Woody.

Another answer, however, is: Who cares what they thought then? The Constitution was written at a time when states were indeed foundational — a central part of people’s identity and way of life. This has not been true for nearly a century, as both national government and national identity have become stronger. States are still essential administrative units. But the rural conservative voter in California — which had more Trump voters than any state, even as he lost it by nearly 30 points — has more in common politically with a rural conservative from South Dakota than either have with urban progressives in New York or San Francisco.

347 What I think everyone (except congress) would support is expanding the house. Every house seat now represents 750k people on average. That is way the fuck too much. We have 435 reps for 330m people. By contrast Canada has 300 seats for 30 million people.

I say at least double the number of seats in the house.

371 Reports that Putin is drafting an additional 300,000 soldiers may be incorrect. Daily Mail says the paragraph specifying the number was blacked out in the official order announcing the mobilization. The story quotes Kremlin officials saying the real number is one million.

Reports that only those who had previously served would be subject to the conscription may also be in error. The Daily Mail story says there's nothing in any of the official documents indicating that.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 22, 2022 10:52 AM (J2vNu)"

It was a very targeted move with a specific purpose. But I would also further argue it was a de facto abolition of slavery given the current state of affairs in the north. Lincoln knew that.

Let's not forget the north was completely opposed to slavery and that's one reason we fighting in the first place.

Nonetheless, Lincoln also knew that to forever end slavery he would need the 13th Amendment, which he lobbied Congress for and approved on February 1, 1865. BTW 56 House members voted against that amendment. Wonder who they were? Oh that's right. Largely Democrats and a few fellow travelers.

Had a buddy who was an Antique Dealer in Rahway, NJ. He used to let me tag along on his early estate sales visits and showed me how to find the good stuff. His trick was to build a pile of cheap costume jewelry and then he would search the old ladies underwear drawer and drop the findings in the cheap pile and make an offer. It worked every single time. As a matter of fact, my wife's pearl necklace and ear rings were purchased this way.
